Hi folks.
I softbricked my note2. I recovered it from the dreaded yellow triangle of death.
But, not before I stopped in at my local Verizon store. The are sending me a re-conditioned Note2.
I was told that if V determines I had 'Unauthorized Software' on the returned device, V would charge me the full out of contract purchase price.
I haven't looked yet but I am sure my flash counter is 1 or 2 and that it will show a custom kernel. Oh, and the device is indeed working.
My note2 is fine. It's rooted with Casual. Only one small booboo top left corner. TWRP is installed. Full system backup in tact. Opened bootloader. Frozen SDM-1 w Titanium Backup. Flawless screen.
I want to see what baseband the one they send me is so I can determine if it's rootable.
But then, mine is working fine so my gut tells me leave the new one alone, send it back and stay with mine.
What would you do?

You could start the bootloader unlock process over again and unplug while it's running. That will crash the bootloader bricking the phone. But since the phone is damaged, you may get charged anyway. Seems like it's a judgement call and what you have on your insurance.

Keep it...reconditioned phones are usually junk. Also please revert to these forums before ordering a replacement. 90% of the time the device is not bricked. The yellow triangle means you didnt follow directions before flashing...Step your game up and start reading the stickies. Read twice Flash once!

I'm with @droidstyle here. i infact did brick my previous n2, not soft bricked but bricked, paperweight, bricked. so i went the vzw way and got a "like new" one. needless to say im not new to flashing, but first phone i bricked. so in this tl;dr paragraph, I'm reiterating what droid said above, read twice, flash once. pretty much if you send the one you softbricked back, you'll get charged the full amount, if you send the one they sent you back, no harm, no foul. keep the old one!
This brings up a lingering question I have had for a while.
If Ciniob did decide to keep the new phone, for whatever reason, couldn't he reset his flash counter with Triangle Away and then Odin the stock VRAMC3 ? Wouldn't that cover his tracks and make the old phone just like new? Wouldn't this procedure prevent VZW from knowing it was ever flashed in the first place?
I would appreciate it if someone would clear this up.

Thank you for the advice about read 2x. For the record, I searched hi and low for a solution. And, just as u said, the solution was here. Thank G those who know far more than I post solutions. Because of this, I was able to un-softbrick my Note.
I was struggling to get i605vramc3 to be noticed by Odin. I posted this in another conversation in this forum. Unable to find the answer, I chose to visit Verizon.
None of the V store people had a clue about what to do other then order a repacement.
I pulled an all nighter brainstorming what to do an finally figured out how to get Odin to see the file.
How do u explain to the wife you just turned a beautifully working Note into road kill? Hence the all nighter.
I will keep the Note that i've had all along. I know I run the risk of bricking it when I mod it. (I may have bricked my BBQ10 trying to load andriod apk's). As I thought about it, it became clear that it was my fault that I soft bricked it. I believe now it would be wrong to hold V responsible. So per the advice of forum members, I will keep my note and return the refirb to V.

Ok, what happened is that I loaded Goo Manager. Then I loaded TWRP. The TeamWin splash screen appeared briefly then the phone went to the triagle.
When I loaded vramc3 that I got from sammobile (downloaded onto the windows7 pc) I was able to recover, and create a back up on Twrp.
Was my bootloader locked earlier? I know the flash counter said 1 and the binary showed 'custom' the first go round.
As long as I don't plug my note in usb, can I put it in Odin mode to see what my flash counter say's now and if my binary displays 'custom'?

I did that. Flash the alternate restore because you have updates and such. Then let it update, then removed root and then fdr to remove the modified flag.

When you say, "alternate restore" do you mean to flash back to 4.1.1 and then take the OTA to 4.1.2?
I wasn't aware that a factory data reset would clear the flash counter. Does that really work? Nice.
Just curious, did you root/unlock using Casual/No You Verizon?

Factory Data Reset. You get rid of the flash counter with triangle away, flash the alternate restore which leaves you rooted. That shows up in the menu as 'modified'. After you unroot you have to do an FDR to clear that.

So I am thinking about exchanging my phone (would have to do it through samsung, because the place i bought it the time limit expired) because the pictures are horrible, I really think there is something wrong with the phone.
My question is, I am rooted, and have flashed a few roms. Can I just odin back to stock? Or is there some kind of flash counter that needs to be reset?

Yes you can just flash back to stock but as far as resetting the counter ...I don't think there's a way yet.

Depending on the method you used to root, your counter will most likely be non-Zero. Since triangle reset does not yet support the T999, your out of luck. If you bought the phone in a non Tmobile store, they normally don't check the boot loader. So your best bet is to restore stock, then do a factory reset and leave the phone on for the return, so they don't think you have messed with it. I returned mine for an exchange to a Walmart and they didn't check the boot loader. YMMV.

Don't worry about the counter thing... I have returned 2 android phones that were heavily modded and nothing ever happened. I did a warranty exchange with my T- mobile SGS2 about 6 months ago. I just made sure to flash it back to stock and get rid of any evidence that would make someone think I modded. Do you really think that Samsung checks every phone they get back for warranty replacement? Do you have any idea how many phones they get returned? I don't know, but I'm sure it's a butt-load! Personally, I wouldn't worry about it. FYI. This has been my experience. I cannot guarantee the same for others.

My S4 suddenly stopped charging the other day, and my immediate response was to unroot and take it to Verizon to see what is up. I never installed a custom rom, but had TWRP recovery installed. I used the No Wipe Stock unrooted image in Odin to put my phone back and Verizon had me to a factory reset. Apparently that is necessary before doing a warranty claim. Now, the guy at the store said that if it was previously rooted, or currently rooted they would reject it and I would be on the hook for several hundred dollars. Is there anyway they can tell that I did root it before?
Will they know you rooted? Not necessarily. However, I'd be surprised if the S4 didn't have a flash counter. Assuming it does, they'd know (at minimum) that *something* was flashed to your phone and how many times something was flashed.

Nope, doesnt say custom. And the device status says official. I am pretty skeptical they will see anything, and the only things I flashed through ODIN were the MD2 and MDK kernels. I just want to make sure I have all my bases covered.
I think you'll be okay. Most likely what they'll do is turn it on to see whether or not it says custom, plug it in to see if it charges or not, ten hand you a brand new device,

Well I already got the replacement device in the mail today. Now I have to send my defective one off. Its there where they will check on the phone.
I returned my phone to best buy after rooting and flashing multiple roms to it and got a new one within first fourteen days and they never knew that I had unrooted it. I know that's different circumstances but just letting you know my experience

I mailed back devices rooted and rommed and never had an issue. I don't even think they check.

So I finally HAVE to replace my Note 2 via warranty. Power button sticks and will not boot.
At the end of the call to place the warranty order she says "any physical damage, water damage, or software alterations will result in a charge of $290". So I'm rooted and ROM'd and would normally just return to stock. BUT since the phone will not boot, I cannot do this. I realize if it won't boot for me it likely won't boot for Verizon.
My worry is that somehow they will in get it to boot. Do they still check for root? If so is this something I should be worried about? I cannot for the life of me get this thing to turn on it seems like I will not be able to return this to stock with out powering the phone on. Any insight is greatly appreciated.
I have done the warranty replacement game for a long time. Typical the people checking the phone are stupid and dump for checking for root. I havent spoken to or talked to one smart person that would check. Plus the people they hired to make sure the devices comes in probably isn't tech savvy. Just a worker trying to get paid.

I agree with the above. I guarantee you the people who do the initial evaluation have a 'target' for the number of phones processed. But just the same return your phone to as stock looking as possible. Restore the launcher, use a stock wallpaper and/or boot-ani. Uninstall all apps you got from the store. And run your battery all the way down. It will continue to discharge even though it's off. This means it will need to charge for a few minutes before it will boot again.
And I've never noticed many posts (i can't recall even one) about phones being kicked back for being rooted/flashed.
But with that said isn't there some kind of flash 'counter' on the Note 2?

When I had my DROID X I went into a Verizon store to upgrade to an s3 and the guy who just got done telling me how he "mods" his gnex looked at my X and it was running cm7 themed out the wazoo and he said how plain the stock os is on the Motorola. Haha. So I don't think that 98% of the people who are either in store or at the warranty place have a clue what rooted is let alone able to tell if it is or not.

I think I read somewhere that you can make a powered usb jig the will boot it into download mode. I might be wrong, but you can search around for it.

Yea I can't even get the phone to boot. Which I believe is due to the malfunctioning power button. But I'm still concerned verizon will find some way to get it booted. I'm going to see if I can boot via ADB this evening. Its been quite a while since messing around with ADB so I need to allow myself some time. Hopefully I can boot it and just Odin the factory image via ADB.
I should also try and clear the flash counter right? Does anyone have any tips or know-how on how to do that? I saw somewhere that there is an app. But should that be run before or after running the Odin stock image?

Hey gerg, the app is triangle away, and I would always try to return to stock if possible. I would use it before returning to stock as it needs root privileges. What a great learning experience (better to look at it that way then get angry trying to accomplish your goal). Keep us posted as we are all"rooting" for you....:thumbup:

However it seems like I'm stuck. I can't for the life of me get this phone to boot, therefore I can restore the stock image via ADB, because ADB will not recognize the device since it is off. I've tried every trick out there, including the youtube video about pulling the charger and pulling/re-seating the battery as fast as possible. No dice.
I did however receive my warranty device today, and since I have ADB all set up and ready to go, I'll be rooting her and getting back to Trans-Neb ASAP, and of course I'll see you back in that thread.
Again, thanks for the help guys it is appreciated. I'm fairly sure I've tried harder and spent more time to get this phone to boot than Verizon will ( I hope at least). So if they can't get it to turn on, I don't see how they can tell its rooted

Seriously. I'm genuinely curious. I've seen people flash stock odin restore tars and give up their Loki'd bootloaders just to get rid of the custom boot screen. Its not like its going to give you an STD or anything, so what's the reason?

Custom screen = warranty void.
I was told all I had to worry about was my Knox status as far as warranty.
I went from ME7 to Mj7 and kept root.
My Knox is still at 0x0 and In about phone it still shows custom, and I'll still get the custom splash screen as well.
Wish I'd have picked up my S4 when they're were shipping with MDK
what's your take on my S4's warranty now? Just curious.

My answer would probably lie in a grey area as far as warranty status goes. But as for the "custom" screen? That doesn't mean your warranty is voided at all. Even if you're not rooted or running a custom rom with mods theres still the possbility that you'd get the "custom" screen after an ota or if any hardware was malfunctioning or if your battery died during while a system app was updating. Plus you can always get rid of the custom screen with relative ease if you had to give it back for warranty purposes. Just flash a full-wipe odin image along with the pit file and if you really want to go overkill then factory data reset while you're at it. Plus, having a "custom" screen is probably not the most significant thing they'd be looking to void your warranty for if you're already running a custom rom with root and recovery...just saying

Well that's also the impression I was under. Myself.. I'm not terribly worried about all that either, I just try and learn as many things as I can on here and ask what some may consider silly questions but usually I'm just trying to learn. I have seen quite a few posts regarding the custom screen though too.
For me since I've messed with my S4 in the first place I have to accept whatever it may cause me in warranty!

I sent two root romed s3's back to asurion with broke screens an paid my 100.00 and got my new phone in box no ? Asked I figured if there smart enough to replace the screen they can Odin or just plug in and flash in download. This is diff then a free factory defect replacement,/refurbished junk the u deal with in store

I have to agree. I've told people multiple times to not worry about it - if you have a phone that's working well enough to give you that indication, you can always flash a clean factory ROM and clear the flag. Don't worry about it until it's time to return it on warranty, if even that.
Worrying about this is a waste of brain cycles.
I dont understand it one bit either. Hey I want my phone to be customized with root custom recovery and a custom rom. But oh boy it better not show a custom status when it boots. That just cant happen. Makes me rofl everytime I see someone post about it.

I've had an older recovery for a while now. I accidentally flashed a non-loki recovery, was able to get back to my phone desktop and flashed TWRP. Now I get the custom screen. Not a big deal, but is it because I flashed the non-loki one? I am on MDK.

I assume that anytime you have a custom recovery loaded, you will get the "custom" boot screen - not sure why you didn't have it before......

I've had a custom recovery for over a year and never had this. I just did some reading and seems there is no real reason for when or how it changes. Everyone has randomness. Not a big deal. Was just curious. Phone works same way. I could care less about the boot screen. Was just concerned at first and thought I bricked the device.
weird - had mine from the first day I flashed a new recovery.
I like the custom screen because it lets me know that I'm doing things right and everything. Lol I care about the warranty but root is more important to me.

I (stupidly) jumped into rooting too quickly. It's a great option for really getting the true potential out of your android IMO, but I (having no knowledge of the possible issues of rooting) really messed me up here.
I have a Samsung Mega SGH - I527 and I have no clue what version of android it was originally running.
Basically, one day I was on base with my cell phone in my pocket, and this was about a week after i rooted with a program I believe was called "kingo". I went to pull it out of my pocket, and the screen was not responding to touch. I wasn't doing anything unusual and there aren't any signs of damage of any physical kind. I freaked out on the spot, and realized it must have been the root.
I rebooted the phone, and touch came back. I rejoiced, then freaked out as about 15 - 30 seconds later, the touch went bad again.
It then stayed not working until I rebooted again, and again, and again, until I managed to get to the Factory Reset settings in that little tiny window of time.(a small note while on this subject: not every reboot got me that little bit of time to use the touch, and the amount of time i had to use the touch screen was never consistent from what i could tell.)
From here on out, just troubleshooting steps already tried:
- factory reset on phone in phones UI (did not fix)
- factory reset on phone with bootloader menu (did not fix)
- using Odin 3.07 to put supposed stock firmwareback on the device (did not fix)
- took apart phone to make sure digitizer/lcd cable was seated properly on the motherboard (did not fix)
Any Ideas? just trying to do something that makes this thing NOT a $500 shiny paperweight :'(

I would say your problem is with the hardware and not software. Now what the problem is and how to fix it, I haven't a clue. I would suggest that you contact Samsung.

The only thing is, the phone is /really/ new.. i never abused it, and I'm thinking that its a software issue. I know its possible i broke/failed the hardware, but i really think its the case that the root i did messed it up. Do you know if there are any other more power ful ways to restore the chipset back to originality than using odin to load it back?
Have you unrooted?

If you have unrooted and its within a year, get a warranty replacement.

Roger, But they can ultimately tell bc even though I unrooted, the device still says "Custom" when you first boot it up. Is that a Problem? Should I just push Factory firmware back to the device with Odin before I contact them?

I had rooted and unrooted several times thinking maybe root was the cause. Unrooted, saved everything on Kies, hardcore factory reset and sent that bad boy back when I got my new. Not a word from them.
My Mega never touched Odin

Maybe you're just referring to opening the boot loader and clearing the cache and doing a FR, but just to make sure... What exactly did you do?

Ha ha...I think if I could open the bootloader, I would be a GOD. Back up everything to Kies, then go into the 3e rcovery......factory reset

Hi im new to the android rooting realm ive had many a jailbroke iphones but new to this. So I bought my mega off Craigslist guy said it had been rooted but did full factory reset apparently that doesnt take root off anyway its still rooted but all the stuff that was said to be musts to use the root access says its not compatible, such as rom manager, titanium back up and HC-ktools. So is there a way to maje it compatible or specific program for the sgh-I527? Please help. Thank yiu for your time
