Which hboot version are you on ? 1.24 (ICS) or 1.25 (JB) ?
If you're using a JB-made recovery on the ICS hboot (or the other way around) it won't work .
To find out your hboot version just reboot into fastboot or to the bootloader and you can check it there .
For ICS hboot use this recovery .
For JB hboot use this recovery .
Both are taken from this thread & full credit goes to neXus PRIME . I just added the direct links just to make it easier .
After you flash the right recovery , just get the latest SuperSU version (1.41) and flash it .
Also , in the future when and if SuperSU updates , don't try updating the su binary from the app - neither Normal nor TWRP/CWM mode will work . Just download the latest SuperSU zip from here .
Good luck!

my HBoot is 1.25, I have installed SuperUser and it installs fine and everything, but I used a root checker and it still says I don't have root
If you've installed it from the Play Store , then it won't work like that . You have to flash the zip I mentioned above from the Hboot-friendly recovery that you need (in your case , the JB one) .
Root needs more than just the application . It needs a file called "su" inside system/xbin . That's the real deal . SuperUser / SuperSU just controls which apps are given SU rights by that file .
If you tried flashing the zip above but still no luck , try changing the rom (or reflashing the same one from scratch) . Full wipe included .
Might also want to check if busybox is installed properly.

Easiest way to use flashable zip http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1903752
Also try to update SU binary in the Superuser app.
I want to root my device but now I don have my pc here so any process of rooting galaxy s3 without pc (adb/odin)
I want flashable zip file for rooting is there any way....?
I want root access only for some apps like chainfire .firewall.....
If you already have a custom recovery, then yes. You can. Usually, when you get out from the recovery, and you are not rooted, it will ask you to root. You select yes and it will root for you
It you are running custom recovery, I think it will be a bit harder.
Anyway, this thread had to be moved to Q&A.

The best answer to my questions was provided by BCSC, THANKS! Worked great!
Follow these steps exactly and you will have the latest Recovery running. You do not need a PC for this method.
1) Download correct Clockworkmod ot TWRP (touch or regular as you wish) for your device
2) Rename it to recovery.IMG and place it at the root of your internal sdcard
3) Download and install terminal emulator from the Play Store
4) Run the terminal and
type: su (press enter)
Then type: dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18 (press enter)
Be sure that you have typed the above code correctly. You will not see a confirmation. It is done almost instantly.
5) Reboot into recovery and enjoy

I had that same problem with the newest TWRP 2.8.6.0, so I downgraded to TWRP 2.8.5.0 and flashed Superuser 2.46.. See if that helps!

There's no installation of SuperSU in that log.
But if you already have a stock backup, let's do this:
Under Advanced, choose Terminal, press the select button to start it in the root folder, and then type this command:
Code:
mount -t ext4 /dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/system /system
Then run the SuperSU installer zip.

Please read the TWRP thread. Everything you need is there.
And that'll prevent you from losing the ability to ever take an OTA . . . .
Hi, I am now using cyanogenmod recovery and would like to change to twrp. When I use fastboot, windows can't find the right driver for my G2M. Is there anyway to convert the img file to a zip file so I can install it through recovery? And when I try to get root from terminal, it said connection timed out. Using rashr, no root permission. I am using Kingroot.
Change Kingroot to SuperSU.
Why would anyone use Kingroot, anyway?
It's full of bugs.

The problem is I can't replace kingroot with superuser. Terminal keep on saying connection timed out when entering su. But I was able to semi-root my g2m and install twrp. I guess I'll have to root my phone again when I need to use rashr.
P.S. I'm the same person as hokiukiu.

If you wiped the whole system partition, root is lost as it is a binary file usually found in /system/xbin. What device do you have? Do you have TWRP or other custom recovery installed?
Sent from my XT1609 using Tapatalk
Depends on how it was rooted. Some use su in system/xbin, and there's also systemless root that works from boot.img and /data partition.

I believe root will work by default in twrp. Boot to it and try adb if you have it. If not I can provide it for you. Send me a pm and I will try to help you out.

Going in a circle here...so if I have TWP I should have root is what you're saying? Why the F can't it detect it? Magisk does but my apps can't. Super SU says "SU binary occupied" again indicating a rooted device
When booted to TWRP navigate on your computer to wherever adb is and open a command window there with shift and right click. Then type adb shell and see if you get a # symbol. If so we can use dd commands to flash your system partition back on.
