Is there anything the note 2 can't do? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

I am going to be switching to Verizon, and I have always liked the note series, just never had one. I like the note 3 on paper but I also like custom roms and aosp. Hence why I decided on the 2, I want that option, I just don't think there will be as much for the 3, but I digress..
I am one of those type of people that always wants the latest and greatest, but I am more than happy with my s3 I have had since june 2012.
really is there anything out there that the note 2 can't handle?I play a few games, but never tried anything more intensive than gta3. Any performance problems ever?
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2

I don't play a ton of games on it, but I have played GTA3 and Need for Speed...never had any performance issues. I have had the phone since December and still haven't see another phone that his given me phone envy yet.
From my Note 2 running Beans 21

I never ran into issues with the n2. If you are able to hold out. I would go with the n3. Way better specs. Better everything and the same relative size.
What exactly about aosp do you like? I personally feel that Samsung has come a long way with touchwiz and it is the best manufacturer skin.
Just my 2 cents. I currently have the s4 and I'm jumping on the n3 as soon as I can
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app

Aosp? Everything.
Touchwiz isn't horrible, I just prefer to run the slimmest Rom I can. I will probably root the note2, unlock the bootloader, and run a stock rooted rom for a while, but I will get bored with it fast. On my s3 I thought"this is the first phone I don't want to root", well that lasted less than 3 months
The other thing I have to consider is the financial side, I am breaking one of my Sprint contracts for 160 to switch. And if I wait I until the 10th, then I have a whole 'nother month of sprint service to pay for as my billing cycle goes through the 8th.

I bounce back and forth between TW and AOSP. I really like s note, and I use BT voice dialing everyday during the week, so I only use AOSP on weekends.
I don't really play games on my phone but I use it more than I use my laptop. Running sar to check cpu stats has never shown that all 4 cores were maxed out.
I like some of the software features on the Note 3, but the hardware specs are only paper upgrades.

Exactly! Most of the N3 upgrades will never be noticed in real world use. I think I am going to hold off another year and get the N4. The new LTE should be out and imo that is the biggest upgrade worth spending the coin on. Verizon LTE has dropped way off in performance over the last year.

Preach droidstyle. This phone needs no upgrade yet. I was a guy getting a new device every 4 to six months and I'm saying this. Have an upgrade as we speak. No need of it. The HTC One is gorgeous but locked as a mofo. The moto x is gorgeous. But locked as well. Chilling with this device that has been keeping me MORE then happy

Glad to see this thread. I'm a long time (almost 9 years) T-Mobile customer joining up with Verizon this week. I recently moved, and there just isn't any other coverage in this area. I did my due diligence and decided to go with the Note 2. (I have to buy my phone off contract and bring it over to save my parents' unlimited plan.) Was happy to see this level of customizing possible for Note 2 considering the carrier... Now I just need the phone to get here!

Can I get an honest opinion....

I know this is the note forum and opinions will be biased. But I'm hoping we can be adults here...tomorrow is my last day that I can return my note to BB under their 30 day policy. I love this phone and all but it can definitely use a little more umph! Run MW3 on a non OC'd kernel then on DaG's kernel at 1.8 and you will know what I'm talking about. So the qustion is...how many of you would give this phone back and get the S3 on saturday given the option?

1. I would keep the note, I love the large screen.
2. if i was to go back to the smaller screen: galaxy nexus > sg3 (i hate touchwiz and samsung/carrier software/upgrade cycle).
I hear that one x is pretty damn sick. Some people don't like the restriction of insternal sd only. But honestly all my music and photos and videos are on the cloud anyway...and the lack of removal battery? No biggie. I'm always near a charger...always. this thing is interesting as is the s3. Note is tight but me being someone who switches phones a lot, it might be time.

I've had mine OC'd on GB and running non- OC'd on ICS on Flapjaxxx's ROM right now. Honestly, I really don't notice a difference at all.
Other than just wanting to have the latest phone, I really can't think of any reason why I'd exchange my Note.

This. I do not think I would be hugely impressed if I traded this in for the SGSIII. The S4 processor is the only real improvement, and unless it is night and day better than the Note, I'd just miss having the Note screen size and stylus.
On a different note (<--ha), I recommended buying phones from Costco. Free accessories and a 90 day exchange period with no restocking fees. Plus their prices are usually cheaper anyway.

I have also recently had to make the same decision as I too buy my phones through BB but I think it comes down to personal necessity.
I am going to college in the fall so I needed something I could easily take notes on and jot down little ideas and such like that and I have also gotten too used to the phone size. Every time I even look at another phone it just seems microscopic. (as you get used to the big screen, sure you can get used to the small screen too)
If you are going to be using mainly for personal - GS3
If you are interested in mainly business or professional use, I would say the Note. (Plus, it looks more professional even when youre just texting ^.^)

Do you know if they have their own insurance policy. for 6.99 a month i get unlimited new/refurbished phones for any reason outside of lost or stolen (rooted, bricked, destroyed, water, hulk attacks). One time, I gave it back to them as I bricked it and they upgraded my phone for free. As a constant flasher (haha), I do not know if I would be able to give that up just yet.
Like others, I really like having the latest phone but it wasnt a big deal for a few years because for some reason I was able to get yearly upgrades, so even if I had a new phone for a few months and a better one came out I knew I could upgrade a few months from than when an even better phone would be out. When I picked up my infuse last year is when my yearly upgrade disapeared, I decided to open a second line which will give me back yearly upgrades, the trade off is a slightly higher bill...I think its 25 bucks more per month. I got the note in march and I can upgrade my other line in august.

They do not. The only insurance offered is through the carrier/assurian. If you need the black tie protection, BB can't be beat.

Vive la Note!
I would keep the Note there is not that much of a big improvment on the SG3 to make up for the loss of the big display and spen. All the software improvements like the Svoice and Smart stay will be ported over by our Devs the only thing that you can't get is the better S4 processor or exynos. SO do you go with smaller screen, and no spen or better processor? I'll stick with the Note.
I've had my note for about two weeks and loved it the first week (rooted it right away). After going back and forth between this, my old nexus s, and my work phone(evo design) I've decided its too big and uncomfortable to hold. I love being able to type cleanly and the screen real estate, but its just too much for me.
I'm going to return it next week for a galaxy s3 pre order. I flashed to stock and unrooted resetting the flash counter and everything. Its not too hard if you decide to do it and I've never used adb before. If I didn't flash a different from the beginning, this thing would have been returned within a couple days. I've been using stock for a few days now and its a world of difference.
EDIT: I also didn't find any use for the S-pen. I tried to like it my first week, but using my fingers is easier for everything and I didn't find the snote app practical for much of anything. I know some people find great uses for this thing, but some reviews are right, you'll never know until you try

I'd keep the Note. For one simple thing, it is a Far the best phone out there with a big if. and that is IF you know what you want to use it for.
Simple example: sMemo not pratical? that is what i thought at first. until i created 2 to 3 empty notes as widgets on my homescreen just waiting to be written on and expanded in size for quick look.
Galaxy S3 to me is no upgrade, as a matter of fact if anything its just the software really. I think that Galaxy Note got a bad rap because of Ginger Bread, performance on that sucked. ICS in the other hand is awesome. I do Owned MW3 and performance on that sucked on the Note, and that is because of software optimization. Blame Android fragmentation for that

MW3 on saurom OC'd to 1.78 plays extremely fluidly...you take away the oc on ics and it is horrible to play.
Considering ill have this phone for the next two years....I'm just a little worried that the device has to be stretched to its limits NOW as soon as I bought it to perform "acceptably"...FYI I don't think ANY current unofficial ICS rom out now is "acceptable".

Getting the s3 isn't a bad option. Better than getting an One X. If I were to get a phone now, it would be the N7000 or the s3. BUT, I still love my G Note on UCLE2 ICS.
-Once you go NOTE, you'd say 4 inches a Joke
-iOS = inspiring Outdated Software
Stick with the note....Its a outstanding phone, with a beautiful large screen.. And development is finally taking off on this phone is only going to get better through time too. You will regret having such a smaller screen. Plus I know the processer is a little faster on the other phone but you won't ever tell the difference that much, plus we already have a overclocked gingerbread kernel.. and ics is right around the corner and soon we will have that kernel overclocked as well.....stick it out you won't regret it!
I just love the note. Its has literally replaced my ipad and laptop as well. Shoot it has has replaced my tv as well.....

Plus you don't technically have to be a Costco member to order from their online store
I have had a phone with the S4 processor (HTC One S), and the performance is marginally better. For me the Note does everything I want and then some. With Nova Prime there is 0 lag or anything else. The screen is the best I have seen, even beating the One X in my honest opinion. I will try a GS3 and see if maybe I will score one locally when they hit craigslist, but just from looks alone....it looks like a huge vibrant, which I was not a huge fan of. The software is already being ported from the GS3 to our device, our FFC is better, and our design seems more high end.
Getting S3 is nice idea.. but If you want to do more than what you can do with a smartphone.. then definitely go for NOTE. It is the most awesome phone on the earth.
Buying S3 from ATT, Verizon and T-Mo is not much of an upgrade.. this S3 is Dual core (not quad as of International version)
I am into the same boat, thinking of getting the S3. The reason I am thinking about it is battery life really. I am disappointed that my 2500 mah battery with push Exchange email is down to 50% at the end of a 9 hour work day. My Captivate used to get to 60-65% instead.
If the S3 has better battery life then I will jump ship. Until them I am still trying to find ways to increase it. I have used hacked rooms as well as ICS its all the same.
I won't lie though, it is going to be tough to leave because the Note will always have these 2 things for it.
BIGGEST SCREEN
S-pen built in.

The biggest con for owning the Note? is that i cannot for the life of me use another phone. It has become everything from Phone, TV, game machine, Work, and Moleskine pocket notebook (yes the paper kind).

[Q] Is it worth it to upgrade to the gs3?

Come july 1st i have an upgrade on sprint. Now i have been following the news surrounding the galaxy s III closely and when it was released, almost imediately i was sure i wanted it. However now that the us version has been released and reviewed I am not so sure. The specs on the galaxy s III on both versions are miles ahead of my original epic's. But, i am not so sure about the gpu of the us version. Its using a gpu from last year's (galaxy s II) phone. This is an issue for me because I like to play the gpu intensive games (at least the ones that my phone can run) nova, me, gta ect. I don't want to be put at a disadvantage when the adreno 300 series comes out later this year aswell as other new gpus. Also i am extremely woried about the gs3 fragileness. I was extremely fortunate that the epic was built like a tank. I dropped it a lot, while talking, texting, out of my pocket ect. It has survived through a combination of luck, build quality, and the active x seido case. However the gs3 from what i have seen breaks easier than an iphone 4(s). I am also not a big fan of svoice. I think the google speak thing works better. So as you can see my cons seem to be stacking up more and more. I don't care that it is dual core vs the quad core international, because quad core isn't optimized but like i said b4 the gpu on the s4 is old. Also I saw the upcoming specs of the lg eclipse and it seems better than the gs3. If it were by any other manufacturer, it wouldn't even be a question. I would just get that. But because i hate lg here is my question(s)
p.s. i hold onto phones for the whole duration of the contract so my next phone HAS to last me the two years
1. Should i get the gs3 or wait?
2.If i wait should i get the lg eclipse or no because lg software and build quality is crap?
3. Any chance the new nexus phones could have the specs i want?
A new nexus is around 8-10 months away and LG phones suck like crazy
And if you can play ganes on your of epic I'm pretty sure they will play nicer on the gs3
Its less worth it for me going from an et4g to the gs3 but I'm a phone junkie ill get it
And I'm pretty concerned about the easyness in breaking the phone so ill get some sort of protection plan

GS3 All the way
I love the GS3. I just got it the other day and it is an awesome phone. Very fast and blows my old Nexus S 4G away. I don't game much so I don't know how it performs playing a game. I ran a quadrant benchmark test and it ranked #2 right under the ONE X, but I believe that was for the international version.
It does seem a bit fragile though. I'm ordering an Otter Box as soon as the Defender model comes out.
All I can say is I love the phone and I would recommend it to anyone.
I just paid $550 for it because I didn't have an upgrade. I came from the s2 and I wouldn't say it's a huge upgrade but it's definitely a awesome phone and I'm glad I bought it
A few things are preventing me from getting the S3 now. The major one is Sprint's network as in Sprint's delay with LTE deployment and (currently) molasses slow 3g. More minor: I have an OG Epic and know that I will miss my physical KB. The last reason is I am hoping to see the 28nm low-power LTE chip phones, which will happen in 6 months or so but this is not a deal-breaker.
Wife's VZW S3 is on order.

If you're referring to the video made by those case makers I'd take it with a grain of salt. The GSIII is pretty tough, although it might be more fragile than the GSII.
Sprint's 3g is crapola here in Seattle so I can't do without the wimax on my E4GT. Lately 3g has gotten worse and wimax is better. I have an upgrade in September so I'm going to hold out until then. I might have more options like a new Nexus LTE rumored for November or maybe a Galaxy Note 2 on Sprint.
See whats worying me is i asked this on a forum for the phone itself. I would have thought i would have gotten a bunch of biased yeses. If i asked on the evo4glte forum i would expect to get a bunch of biased nos. But i seem to be getting maybes and yeses. So this is making me more afraid to take that step to a new phone.

Week Until Release

Well 7 days as of Thanksgiving until this phone hits VZW customers pockets. I am really starting to get excited. Seems like its been such a long wait. This is going to be my phone for years to come. Seriously, I can't wait. All these people saying they are getting 12hrs of heavy usage makes me ecstatic. I have been wondering if there is a use case for the media dock for me personally. I already have a pretty nice desktop. I think for my Dad would be perfect. His laptop needs to be replaced and he needs something with a big screen. Maybe just grab a generic touchscreen monitor and the media dock for him.

"This is going to be my phone for years to come" made me lol...I give it 6mo before the s4 or something else drops and you will be moving on. Although its getting to a point where upgrading is not a huge improvement anymore. I really dont think its going to have a huge WOW factor over the S3, but I must admit I still want one lol...mainly because I initally wanted the note but it never made it to VZW so I settled for the S3.
I'm excited too, but can't upgrade for another month. Doubt I'll be satisfied for "years" though. Android has come a long way since I bought my thunderbolt and I'm sure I'll feel that again in two years.
You never know maybe Q4 next year we'll have octocore phones lol
Maybe we should get some sort of count down timer. I've been waiting since the original Note for Verizon to get in the game.
Props to the person that puts the countdown on Verizon's homepage.

Verizon delayed it for so long it almost feels obsolete already with new phones like Nexus 4 out and new ones probably coming out around Christmas time. On top of that, they crapped on the home button.

If you are going pick a phone that makes the Note 2 feel almost obsolete, I wouldn't go with the Nexus 4 (Android iPhone 5 without LTE?).
I can't wait to retire my Thunderbolt. Done with all the problems with this phone. Oh, and the crazy delayed updates.
I think until something else of a similar size comes out (Note 3?) This phone will keep me plenty happy.
It certainly has the hardware to run the Android OS for a long time to come.
Note 3 should be expected in about a year.

Not worried until the Note 3 comes out or until HTC and Motorola make a phablet with a S-Pen like device. The S4 could be released tomorrow and I would still pick the Note 2 unless Samsung start putting S-Pens in all devices.

This. After playing with the Note II for an extended period of time at Best Buy today, I truly believe it's a really different experience from regular smartphones, especially after using the S-Pen. That hover feature on the S-Pen is not only incredibly cool, but also super useful (for previews, information pop-ups, etc). And I can see myself taking notes with S-Note and using its Knowledge Search feature often.
Oh, and I was with my brother and his gf as I was showing this phone off to them, and I think I converted her from being an iPhone fanboy to an Android fanboy by the end of my Note II demonstration. :highfive:
I was at the mall today for my third look at the Note II. The Sprint and ATT stores both have them out. I have one on preorder from Verizon, but can't get over the size. Tried it in my pocket (again!) and fooled around with the S-pen apps and really do like this phone a lot. I've decided I want a very thin cover that will give me a better grip when I have it in one hand, and a stylus that is larger that I can keep in my shirt pocket. I was going back and forth with the NoteII, DNA, or wait until summer, but the s-pen is a great feature that is unique to the Note's.

Get Note 2 or wait for Galaxy S4

Hey all, this question is driving me nuts. My birthday is in March and I can get the Note 2.
I love the Note 2 for its massive screen and stylus.
On the other hand I could wait a few more months and get the Galaxy S4 which will surely be one of the hottest phones of the year with great specs and I'll get it right away instead of buying a several month old phone.
Opinions?

In all reality do you think it's specs will be much better then the note? It will simply be the current flavor of the month but in reality won't be that much improved.
If you like the note get it. If you're going to wait for the s4, then may as well wait for the note 3, but by that time the nexus 5 will be coming you so should wait for it and so on. My point is there will always be a new hot phone coming.
So if the phone you like is here already then get it or you will just keep waiting on the next big thing and never actually get any. I can say I've owned most the high end phones on Verizon and nothing can touch this note!

Opinions?

The screen will be bigger on the Note 2 and the GS4 won't have an sPen. I'd say get the Note 2, unless you can do without those two awesome features. I personally can't and won't. My next phone will be the Note 3.
I may be in the minority, but it's rumored that on March 15th we'll know what the S4 will be. Seeing as how it's just a little over a month away, I would personally wait to see if it offers anything that the Note 2 doesn't before you spend $600 and/or get locked into a 2 year contract.
Re: [Q] Get Note 2 or wait for Galaxy S4
Note 2 for the win. I dissed it until I used it. Now I can't do without it

Note 2! The resale of the N2 should be pretty good down the road if something gets released that you cant live without.

There simply won't be enough advances in technology for the S4 to be worth the wait, not to mention you will have to pay the premium subsidized pricing if you go that route. Of course if you want a smaller screen, then the S4 would be the obvious choice. However, the specs along for the S4 don't guarantee a good user experience where the galaxy note 2 has already been established as providing a good user experience due to the stylus and customized UI that it comes on the device.
With phones, you won't ever be the king of the mountain for long before something better hits the market, so you might as well choose a device that best meets your needs. I was looking for a device that would give me decent battery life, but I didn't expect the note 2, to provide more than 3 days of battery life under light usage and 2 days under normal usage.
Re: [Q] Get Note 2 or wait for Galaxy S4
You can ask this question all day, replacing note 2 with "x" and S4 with "y".
Make sense? Whatever feels right - get it!

Thanks guys! Well I always wanted the biggest screen phone I could buy so it seems the Note 2 is a clear winner for me! Hows the battery life been on it with Verizons lte?

If you wait for the next big thing you are always going to be waiting.
Changes so fast.
With the specs and rapidly growing development on the note ll I am quite happy with my purchase and feel my device is something that will make me happy for a couple of years. I usually steal all the upgrades and pass down my old phone to the wife and kids each year but that may change now. Na.....what am I saying? Daddy always gets the big piece of chicken. Hahaha!

If you want a phone the size of the G3 but with the reception (or other feature of interest) of the note 2; I would wait and see what the G4 has to offer; however if you are happy with the note 2 form factor/feature set then I would just get the note 2. From my perspecitve the note 2 has two flaws (which might be fixed in a future phone):
a) The screen is vulnerable if dropped (the newer phones are suppose to be better in this arena though I'm not sure if they will still be as scratch resistant)
b) I would prefer a phone a bit narrower than the note 2 (length is less of an issue).
-
As an FYI I do have a note 2 (which replaces the droid razr). I really only have two complaints (width which I mentioned) and i prefer the mail client (stock andriod) on the razr (and tablets) to the one on the note 2. I really wans't unhappy with the razr but i purchased it before the maxx was announced and it had rather poor battery life and after a year the battery life was just not acceptable any longer and the note was the only phone I found reasonable at this date (I would have considered the dna if it had a larger battery; and some of the applications I use such as xscope) don't really work well with the on screen buttons of the hd-razr).
-
I still consider the stylus largely a gimick though over time that view might change; i have small hands but the weight is fine - and the phone is significantly more responsive than the razr. One amusing thing I learned when er removing the auto wifi notify is the note 2 has very fast internal sd; something the tf700 (asus) should pay attention to (for those in teh dark ft700 has a bad problem with lag due to a miserably slow internal sd).

I certainly wouldn't call the width a "flaw"
I hate phones that have long narrow screens, I want my screen as wide as possible.

So CM 10.2 would be an option and the bootloader is unlockable with the latest factory version?

Just letting you know they stopped selling phones at Volkswagen. You'll have to go somewhere else.

Just so torn between the newer devices and I have little hope that the holy trifecta of build/updates/camera on a phone these days isn't coming any time soon without throwing a phablet screen on it.
And now.... the Note 2 seems like the perfect device to go to from the SGS3.... I think 5"5 is just about the highest I can go -- though sorta not happy that is only has 267ppi (I am near-sighted even with glasses). The note 3 sounds to be too big, the new Nexus probably won't hit verizon, the HTC One's camera is the worst, and the SGS4 is not my phone....
Oh and Verizon has these coupons that brings a brand new Note 2 down to $204 so yeah
How do you guys like the phone? Are you upgrading or feeling an itch to?

No I don't care to upgrade. Looked at the HTC One, all the new Motorola phones and still love this better then anything. Rocking goodness rom till I die. This phone is amazing. Goto best buy and have them price match amazon. I got this phone at 200 six months ago

Well, I have a few thoughts on it.
First off, you can't go wrong with this phone. I know we're all kind of still stuck in that mindset that we need the newest device available, but it just doesn't matter as much as it did two years ago. We reached that plateau where the computational hardware is more than powerful enough to run a perfectly smooth experience throughout the OS. Even with the new CPU architecture (A15 vs the A9 in this phone) in phones like the SGS4, the One, the GN3, etc. there's not much of a point in the extra power. When we went from A7 to A9 then single to dual core, it was a big deal. We needed the absolute best hardware to obtain the best experience we could. We've simply past that point.
With that said, 720p vs 1080p, to me at least, also means less than 720p vs WVGA. Even at 5.5" inches, it's really freakin' hard to see the difference. Also, if you have vision issues, you realize that things will be smaller in 1080p vs 720p? Things are sharper because they can fit more stuff in the same screen, and produce the same images at a smaller rate. DON'T "upgrade" to 1080p if that's an issue for you.
The biggest selling point for us, of course, is that the GN2 is the only one with an unlocked bootloader right now. There's hope that the SGS4 will have safestrap (maybe even kexec support too) soon, and while safestrap's great, it's not an unlocked bootloader. It's a big deal, it's getting harder to unlock them with every new generation of phones. Before you go with this though, really take the time to hold it in your hand there. If you're used to using your phone with one hand, it will be a lot harder. People actually laugh at how big my hands are, but I can only barely reach every part of this screen with my thumb.
The One has a beautiful design, screen, etc. but I personally can't give up a removable battery and external sd support. I have barely plugged this phone in because I swap batteries and use an external charger. Furthermore, I never worry about storage because of the sd. I can't give those up.
The Note 3 will probably be the same size as this device with a smaller bezel. It will probably be even thinner too, if the SGS3 to 4 is any precedent. It will be my first choice as an upgrade, but I'm in no rush. I'll wait until I can get a custom ROM/kernel on it so there's established & active development for it. I would hate to be stuck in the situation SGS4 users are in now. Even MDK users, the ones who were able to get their phone before the firmware update, barely have development options because there's such a small user base.
The new Nexus I can't really comment on, there's no substantial information available for it, which at least means it won't be available any time soon. The Nexus 4 and GNex were horribly-kept secrets, so the new one won't be any different.

I think I might just go with Amazon.... it's only 99 on there now. Going in today just to test the Moto X at VZW... though I know I'm pretty sure I'm going to be disappointed.
