I have done tons of research and rooted my verizon gn2 the other day using casual. i have been researching how to flash roms, but its so confuseing. some of the stuff i read is from a few years ago and im kinda worried its out dated and i might screw something up or brick my phone. i have questions im hoping i can get answered. im not quite sure where to begin on how to flash the rom jelly beans. I have backed up the phone useing titianum. Can someone kinda take me under their wing? sorry for sounding so helpless and stupid.

Can i achieve root without flashing pre-root kernel?

Hey guys I've searched the thread before posting this so please don't flame me lol..OK my question is this..can i achieve root without flashing pre-rooted kernel and without using Odin?

Not yet. There only two mehods currently available and they both require ODIN. Just go for it I say. I did am glad I can regain the control I need for the Note.

Bootloader? Roms?

Hey guys, its atrixno4g and i was wondering if their is away to rom the atrix running 2.3.6 with .141. Oh and if someone could tell me about this unlocked-bootloader thing is all about ( is it when the phone is unlocked?) and how to get the clockworkmod recovery i think its called.. I recently got this phone and without doing any research i used a program called RSD Lite and flashed some sbf to downgrade or something and instead bricked my phone- but i fixed it now. So basically can someone just give me a brief summary about all this, i dont want to brick my phone again.
Thanks.

It would take more of my own time to explain it all and provide all of the links then it would for you to find out yourself.
Search-lazy much?
Sorry but by asking questions like that you are effectively invalidating and making worthless all the hard work and effort put into writing all those tutorials and explanations in other threads. Not nice.

I rooted and unlocked my bootloader a few hours ago using the automatic bootloader unlocker tool
But like everyone said you should search because all of this is included in the tutorial here just choose the option 3 for the AT&T version and continue

Yeah, they are outdated. Like the bootloader thread, its outdated, but its still the way to do it. Theres no newer way. After that, root it. After you root it just install cwm from the market don't follow any threads on it.

Like everyone has said you gotta search. A sign you haven't even looked in those threads is the fact you said they're outdated even though they have responses that are very recent, indicating people with your version and firmware might be commenting. It's a lot of reading and it should be because if you mess it up you could brick your phone. Read everything you can and then read it again. I can guarantee you can unlock, get clockworkmod working, and flash a ROM onto your phone (my guarantee is limited to the US AT&T atrix)
Thanx for everything guys- now i root first or unlock bootloader?

I see you're still not too good at searching the forum...
How about you just follow this guide?

Note 2 newb just unlocked

Hi guys, I am very new to the Note 2. I just unlocked and rooted the latest ota using Casual. Thanks to Adam Outler and everyone else involved. So my question is which ROMs are compatible with this ota? Basic question I'm sure. I came from the Razr and the kernel had to match so I assume its the same here? Anyone willing to shed some light on this for me would be greatly appreciated.

Any rom you want as long as it is in the VZW Note 2 threads can be flashed ours arent locked down by what update we are on because our bootloader is unlocked where it isnt on Moto phones. AOSP roms require AOSP kernels as TW roms require TW kernels. The roms come with kernels though so that isnt something tk worry about unless you I want to.
The only thing to remember is if you go to a 4.2 rom and want t I go back to 4.1 you have to flash a downgrade zip so your SD card doesnt become corrupted. You can find the downgrade zip in the Official CM 10.1 thread in the OP.
Check out Droidstyles guide in Android Development, its a sticky, it explains quite a bit and would ne helpful to you I think.

Thanks for the info. Exactly the answers and info I was looking for. I just flashed CleanROM and went through the flashing process. When it got to the end and said finish to reboot it just turned off and wouldnt turn back on. Couldn't get to recovery or download mode. I had to pull the battery and then turn it on. It went straight to the new ROM though without a hitch. Is that a normal part of the flashing procedure on the N2? The battery pull I mean, or did I miss something?

Thats not a normal thing to happen, but it does happen occasionally. As long as it boots up after the battery pull I wouldnt be too worried by it. I have had it happen to me before and after the battery pull I experienced no issues whatsoever.

CleanROM's good. It was the first ROM I flashed when I got my Note II too.
Eventually though, you may want to switch to something more feature-rich like Jelly Beans, which is what I'm rocking now. The features it adds are pretty awesome and you get full touchwiz functionality (S-Pen and the like) with the look of AOSP.
DL'ing Jelly Beans now. Gotta make a new TiBu before flashing though. Will give it a go shortly. My wife fusses at me sometimes cause on my old phone (Razr) and on this one I am always flashing different ROMs. She especially hates it when she calls and my phone goes directly to voicemail cause I am in recovery flashing a ROM or kernel.

Hi all, I'm feeling like a n00b on the Note too, and really appreciate the help all of you seem to be willing to share with each other. I'm not new to modding phones, recently I've been through an S3, DNA, RAZR HD and M, and even another Note 2. I made the mistake of swapping the Note 2 for an iPhone 5, and regretted it about thirty seconds later. Now that's my wife's phone, and due to the grace of another (local) xda member, I'm back rockin' the Note 2. This time around in looking forward to getting into some serious flashing and tweaking to get the most from the hardware. I've decided this is Verizon's best phone at the moment, with everything I need.
Don't worry, you're not alone in having a wife who gets annoyed at flashing and tweaking. Happens to me all the time, but I use the excuse it's one of the few hobbies that I have which doesn't involve the rest of the family and I need a bit of alone time. It kind of works as an excuse until the point where I need to use it again.
I'm looking forward to being part of this community and wanted to say hello.

I like jedi X rom...I got 3 days off my battery with just the right settings...my recommendation is to not mess with the per app dpi for the settings app because now I'm stuck without a settings app and about to switch roms...just about any rom will work as long as it's for your carrier... Best of luck!

Beans is the best! photosphere camera (page 1 of forum) works great with build 16! Check it out! Also, I agree about Jedi: definitely magic battery settings. Enjoy your new hobby! My wife is the same way.

Got my S4. What now?

Hey guys, just got my S4 and I'm really happy with it, but I'm just so lost with all of the locked boot loader things and Loki ect. I don't know where to start at all. I'm sorry if this is the wrong thread to ask, if it is, could you guys point me in the right direction? Once again, sorry.
Thanks in advance!

Best place to start is finding out what build you're on as options are limited to some degree depending upon that. I'm assuming you're going to be on one of the newer ones. Lemme know and we'll go from there bud.

Unfortunately, I am on the newest build that came out. I had no idea that the bootloaders were locked until after I updated. I actually came from the S3 so I pretty much know the tools that I need and things like that but I have never ever heard of Loki before, all I know is its some type of makeshift work around for the bootloader.

You will not be able to install a custom recovery on your device, as any build past MDK (the original build) has pretty much been locked down. Only MDK people have the ability to use Loki.
Your only alternative is Safestrap, basically you can only flash ROMs that use the stock kernel...which means no AOSP. There's a thread for it here somewhere.

Damn that's dissapointing to say the least. I really loved AOSP on my S3 and I really hear that its pretty great on on the S4. Oh well, I will just enjoy 4.3 until 4.4 comes later this month, or year due to Verizon's AMAZING speed when it comes to updates. -_-

if you do some reading, you find that safestrap recovery is available for your phone....limited ROMs but at least its an avenue.
read and research !!!

[Q] Sprint S3 4.3 - Some questions relating to rooting and knox.

Hey everyone. Im relatively new to this forum and rooting. I have some background knowledge in programming and other related aspects, unfortunately nothing related to Android. As well as some Linux OS experience. Now as far as i know ROM's could be compared to OS builds. Android 4.1.2, 4.3, 4.4, etc. Rooting makes you a super user/sudo like Linux. I think i have that pretty much correct. Now for the things i know little about.
-KNOX so far it seems its mostly used for enterprises and to see if we have installed a custom ROM. I've seen a lot of different information about Knox. What exactly else does it do/change? As of 4.3 i see we could no longer roll back or we will brick our device. What should i be wary of? I could care less about tripping the knox counter.
-Stock OTA is another thing i was curious about. This simply means an update was installed post factory by user, correct? My girlfriend has an S3 and i cant remember if 4.3 was stock or 4.1.2. I just wanted to clear up if my OTA updated S3 was covered under this.
-i saw one root method which kept the stock recovery but installed the superuser. What is the benefit for having a stock recovery? Would i be able to use a custom one with Knox in place? I was thinking of using a 4.4 cyanogenmod rom.
Sorry if this seems a bit noobish, but my schedule is tight and i spent maybe 6 hours trying to find exact information. Kind of hidden lol.
I apprreciate any answers!
