Re the launcher redraw: has anyone tried using something like System Panel to mark the app as not killable, or TiBackup to convert the launcher app to a System app (which I believe gives it better CPU priority/prevents it from being killed)

yup. t he launcher IS a system app. i've tried many things, including v6 supercharger bulletproof launcher..it still redraws and lags out like crazy. i'm using pimp my rom right now with the launcher lock in memory, and it's STILL doing it. i'm out of ideas. i'm not a dev so idk how to mod these things.
and the video camera issue being horrible focus, horrible audio, the 'breathing' focus.
Have you tried any build.prop edits for redraw?
Try adding this at the bottom of the build.prop:
ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=1
I know most of you guys have probably tried this already, but I thought it worth a shot.

Based on my experience today's Verizon update breaks the ability to perform this root method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2448887
To be clear, if you perform that root method before accepting the OTA - you can retain root. But this method would simply not work for me until I flashed back to the pre-ota stock image.
I read it also had a new baseband, did anyone see any improvement in radio performance?

Okay I found a way to be enable the camera shutter option on the camera app. You have to be rooted and I used root explorer.
1.) Open root explorer
2.) go to System folder
3.) Enable R/W ability
4.) Hold down on build.prop and open in text editor mode
5.) Look for 'ro.media.capture.shuttertone' without quotes
6.) It will say 0 change it to 1
7.) Click the menu button and choose save and exit.
8.) Reboot - not sure if you need to, but I did.
9.) Open the camera app and click menu, settings.
10.) You will now have the option to enable or disable the shutter sound.
Pics provided. Please thank me if this is helpful.
Side note, there are a lot of options in the build prop, but the interesting part is there is a whole section for LTE settings, and it keeps refering to verizon wireless at least thats what I think VZW stands for.
It worked. for some reason when I first had my phone it made the shutter sound. Than somehow it went away. Now I applid your fix and I can enable it or disable it. Thanks.
Simply brilliant.
I've also noticed a ro.camcorder.videoModes=false parameter. Wonder what that does if set to true.
It requires a reboot, but it works really well. There are quite a few options in build.prop. Wonder if there are any other tweaks.

That I'm not sure about. I do not think enabling a setting will keep an update from happening. If it does its real quick and easy to change back.

Awesome, even more options! I'll have to enable that as well. Also, root explorer automatically makes a backup of the original file so if need be, you can easily restore the file to stock.
I tried the new video options but didnt see any difference. So my guess is they are not working.

Makes sense that they were disabled then.
But the shutter sound option was a great find. Never understood why camera phones needed that. There is no shutter so why does there need to be a fake sound? I know some old schoolers might like it and I don't mind it as an option, but why remove the option to enable/disable it. Stupid motoblur.

Re: the shutter sound is actually a requirement in many states (lot of creepers out there to keep up w/ evolving technology, i guess lol).
Re: add'l build prop tweaks I've found so far -
1) LCD Density setting *ro.sf.lcd_density"* (default is 240, you can go as low as 200 w/o causing conflict w/ system apps)
2) dalvik.vm.heapsize_48m (default is 48, can set as high as 64 w/o causing conflict w/ system apps, and as low as 32m). I'd personally leave this setting alone until development on this progresses, not sure how much of an impact this would have w/ stock kernel and other configurations. I put it @ 64m and ran w/ it for a few hours and noticed no significant improvements.

Ugh, stupid politicians making stupid unenforceable policies. Don't they have better things to deal with.
A determined pervert could simply do this hack or tape over the speaker with a thick cloth (like velour).
On the other hand, being able to turn off the shutter sounds have many very legit purposes. I personally use my camera to take pictures of notes during conferences and to take pictures of books in the library. Also, when I did community theatre, I would take pictures of my audio patchbay so I could check my hookups whenever we needed to change mics for whatever reason backstage during the show.
Thank you. Much better fix than "disable STREAM_SYSTEM_ENFORCED" solution.
Anyway to disable the beep sound and vibrate whenever I power down my phone?
1) The haptic feedback on pressing the Home button feels ever so slightly delayed compared to how it was original in GB and the other GB ROMs. Could be in my head. Anyone else experiencing this and if so, know how to fix it?
2) Apex launcher that is included in the ROM seems cool but to put widgets on the home screen it says I need to install it as a system app or have root or something. I have root of course - how do I get it as a system app?
3) When I try to install the Chrome beta browser it's giving me "Error - Error processing purchase" dialog. Any ideas on how to fix this? When google searching this problem it seems like it might be on Google's end and I should just wait it out.
4) People in the dev forum are talking about some multi-dpi fix. I didn't run that since I have no clue what that is or what they're talking about.
5) Also people are saying that the VM heap is wrong or something on this build. I have no idea what that is or how it will effect me.

Multi-DPI fix are for people who are running their phones with a DPI (Dots Per Inch) that is different from the stock 320 DPI. A lot of people use an LCD Density of 240 which causes some poorly (read Samsung TouchWiz apps) written apps to scale badly on screen, like the dialer. If you aren't changing your DPI then you don't have to worry about the fix. They won't hurt anything, but they're not needed for you.

I'm the wrong person to give details on how the VM Heap works, but the stock ICS leak uses 256 and people have claimed performance improvements by reducing the VM Heap to 128 or 64. I've got it at 128 and it seems to have improved performance, but I cannot say for sure.
You can change LCD Density and VM Heap with apps like ROM Toolbox. You can also move Apex to system/app with ROM Toolbox. It's a rather useful app.

This is not really a question, but more of a suggestion for those who can't stand to use the current Camera on Liquid and Jesters Roms. Personally, I take a lot of pictures with my phone and the quality from that APK was quite bad when it was dark compared to what it was.
So after a lot of research, here's what I did:
Downloaded Root Explorer from the Google Play.
Browsed to system/app
Mount R/W and deleted Camera.apk
Downloaded this camera apk from MIUI: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15307536&postcount=167
Installed it and voila - working camera with focus.
Note: Camcorder still doesn't work
I'm not sure if it's required to uninstall the Camera.apk (chances are no), however it's what I done.
think this may work with AOKP?

You mean it shows the controls, but a blank screen right? You have to take one picture like that, and after that it displays the screen and it works fine. You'll have to do that each time you start up the app unfortunately, but still it's better than crap quality and no focus.

Hey. It seems like the "new" 4.0.4 (4.1.B.1.13) is available through Vodafone. I've just updated my phone and here are my thoughts.
1. The notification led problem hasn't been fixed.
2. There's no new kernel.
3. It's a bit smoother than .587. (Actually it's not. Just placebo.)
4. The touchpad responds better. (Placebo)
5. The dialer is much faster.
EDIT:
6. I'm disappointed in Sony. I've waited so long for this update and it's a pile of t****, slow and buggy. If you're still on GB, stick with it, don't "update"!
EDIT:
7. Sony, are you playing us? Video recording still laggy, audio output is still mono.
EDIT: According to CTCaer the only real change is related to WiFi libraries. There's also a new baseband which might also solve some signal issues. That's all folks! Don't expect better overall performance.
Download: http://d-h.st/WcP
Note. Vodafone branded. Contains carrier bloatware.
Some screens and Benchmarks.
still same pathetic mixed ui
What other changes? more screenshots please)) there is a problem with the network mode?
i'm still curious about what did they update actually. kernel is still the same exact kernel as .587, bit by bit.
if notification led and buggy video record with stabilizer on haven't been fixed, what is the change then?
btw i can see the baseband is .85 now.

Did they fix network mode resetting?
Did they changed, added, removed any widgets?
Is there still double "Fun & Downloads" widget?
Does "media shortcuts" widget still takes 4x2 grid instead 4x1 which is proper?
Is WiFi coverage still as weak as before?
Is app drawer still laggy as before?
Is overall experience still cluttered and choppy as before?
Is gaming still "mission impossible" as before?
I guess it will take some time to answer all this, but we're not rushing anywhere. Take your time.

5,6,7) It's still full of lag. Homescreen switching is slow and choppy, the app drawer is the same. Video recording laggy and mono sounded. Gaming is laggy, for example, Temple Run lags, same as on .587
As for the rest, I can't tell for sure. Once I saw how bad it runs, I switched back to GB.

Like I said before on several occations, Gingerbread is light year ahead of this half-finished ICS wannabe.
In everything - period.
Beside fanciness and somewhat wider choice of apps, which will appeal to "up to date" type of users.
But everything (important) else is on side of GB really. Usability, performance, rock solidness, stability, gaming, etc etc...
As for me, I'm sick of waiting for something to happen, and then being slapped in face harder than before, over and over again.
I was using (torturing myself) ICS in last few weeks just for trying to make myself to like it, and hoping that new update will make it usable finally, but now...

This.
What is the smearing issue?
Our lovely SGS4 Super AMOLED screens are the first kind to completely turn off pixels when true black is showing...
Previous generation AMOLED screens used on the SGS1,2 & 3 devices kept power to black pixels which could be seen in a very dark room as a faint glow on areas of screen showing black.
So we now have true black screens with switched off pixels which is a GOOD thing... Am I right?
Well in theory yes but you have probably noticed a fairly annoying flaw when this is put into practice. The pixels take time to turn back on so whenever a grey or dark object moves across the screen against a black background the image will "Smear" due to this pixel switch-on delay.
How does this app fix this?
It's very simple and not a true fix. The app creates a nearly transparent white overlay covering the screen. This will make blacks a very dark grey which you will find hard to notice but it is enough to prevent pixels from switching off since true black is eliminated.
Use the Smear Fix app to launch the overlay and the Kill Smear Fix app to remove it. Simple!
Quick Guide
#1 install the "Kill smear fix app first
#2 install the "Smear Fix V1.4 app
#3 When you launch the app there is NO ui interfaace. The app with create a nearly invisible overlay which will cover the entire screen.
#4 The app WILL auto start on boot UNLESS you have killed it previously using the Kill app.
#4 The Kill App will remove the overlay AND prevent the main app restating on reboot. The control file for this is "smearfix" stored at the root of your SD memory.
IMPORTANT: This app has just one known issue/bug/quirk which is the same you will find for ALL overlay/screen filter type apps so I can't fix it.
When the app is running you WILL NOT be able to install any apps manually. The install button just won't respond. You will have to use the kill app to undo the fix to remedy this.
ROOT NOT REQUIRED!!
Install the Kill App BEFORE you install the main overlay app
V1.2>>> Kill app now properly kills the main app and service.
V1.3>>> Fixed landscape overlay
V1.4>>> Made overlay 1080x1920 properly this time. USES LESS RESOURCES TO RUN!!

Holy mother of God it actually works perfectly.
This is cool and all, but one major draw back is that, when this app is running, you are not able to touch the INSTALL button when say restoring an app via titanium.
I have this same problem with the app called Screen Adjuster (which basically does the same thing, just by slightly changing the RGB values to make the smearing go away). The plus side to that app is it has a toggle to turn it off quickly.
Seems to be working, thanks for the fix!
