My Galaxy tab 2 10.1/SGH-I497 from AT&T seems to have no support for anything other than rooting. Am I missing something? I'm under the impression that only roms specifically designated for the I497 should used but it's hard to believe that there's no interest in porting over a couple of the more popular roms. Is my assumption correct, or will a rom for a non-AT&T version work and I just didn't get the memo?

I'm not sure.. but if you can find a forum for the tab 2 10.1..then ask around.. I would guess that the roms would flash fine, but you will need to find out you're APN's so you will have data after flashing a rom for another carrier..

How come the vzw tablet will not load any rom except those made specifically for it? I'm willing to lose 3G/4G connectivity but no rom will load past the Samsung sign. The European 3G tablet can load any rom but it will lose mobile data if the rom isn't built for it, how come the vzw tab doesn't work this way?

I live in the Fremont area and would much rather have an lte tab. Want to trade my wifi tab for your vzw tab?
I'm far from an expert, just a user who loves rooted android devices but I'd venture to guess that the fact that Pershoot developed separate kernels for various models of Galaxy Tab 10.1's is an indication that at some fundamental level these things are different.
It'd be interesting to see if there's a way to take the ROMs being distributed for other models and modify them prior to flashing in order to make them compatible with our device. I just don't know how to do this personally.
Sadly, no developers have the LTE model so we're stuck with rooted stock.
I would think though that short of the theme part of many of the popular ROMs there shouldn't be any reason why you couldn't modify a stock LTE device to conform to the changes these ROMs have. It just takes a lot of work compared to flashing a prebuilt one . .
There are hardware differences between the LTE and Wifi versions of the tabs, which means that they run on different kernels. As Muzzy was saying, the developers would need to develop a kernel and a LTE-specific Rom for the VZW tab. It's unfortunate, but that's what happens when a carrier gets into a device, they have the manufacturer "customize" the build. I'm sure some devs will be getting into the LTE tab soon enough, or at least someone will port another dev's work from another tab to the vzw version.

Say I wasn't worried about 3G/4G, if I get a lte kernel, do you think the wifi only kangs will work? Currently it will load but it will not go past the Samsung screen

In order to give a definitive answer I would have to look through the differences in how Kangs and the VZW rom handle radios, but I'd venture to say probably not. Usually the roms have to be ported from one device to another in order to account for the differences in hardware. This is the case with the Samsung Nexus S and the Nexus S 4G. They have nearly identical hardware, (except for the radios,) and while they share an OS, (Gingerbread,) you can't flash a Nexus S rom to a Nexus S 4G. Sorry.
Hi there.
I'm fairly experienced with flashing my phones over the last couple of years, but I'm new to the Galaxy tab 10.1.
I've read many development threads and think I have a basic understanding of the Roms and keywords I should be looking for, but just want to confirm a few things.
I have the Canadian Rogers "4g" Galaxy tab 10.1, GT-P7500R. It has the buttons across the top of the tab if you're holding it in Landscape mode (like most U.S wifi models, and different than most US 3G versions, I believe).
So I guess I just want to make sure that:
-Roms that mentione "3G" should work fine
-Obviously Roms that mention "7500" should work fine.
-What about roms that simply reference Verizon, or "VZW"?
-My understanding is also that "P4" would also be relevant? (where does the P4 come from... anywhere in particular?).
-Wifi Roms will work fine, but obviously with no cellular data?
If anyone can confirm/clarify some of this, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
I have no experience with the P7500R but actually I would be supprised if flashing the P4 for 3G would work. Looking here:

it specificaly warns that the stockrom for this version is not compatible with the 3G variants.

Hmm... interesting. Thanks for the link. They say not to use it on other models because of carrier specific bloatware and default settings.... none of which should particularly hurt your device though, I'd think.
Some of the more popular Roms in the dev sections specifically have people mentioning if the Rogers Tab is working well... such as [ROM][GT-P7500] CM9 KANG (ICS Preview) (03/25/2012)
I'm just curious going forward with potential new roms that surface, which keywords to look for.

I indeed read a confirm that 4G is working with the CM9 ICS.
Well then:
P4=P7500=3G and appearantly = 4G
separate builds are made for wifi and Verizon LTE so these do not give you full functionality on your device. I believe VRZ is using CDMA instead of GSM protocol and wifi is not using any protocol ;-)
you can find some different kinds of builds here:

Hey all. I searched for an answer to this question, but haven't really found a solid answer. And i'd like to know before doing something that might mess up my new delicious Galaxy Note.
So I just got a T-Mobile Note yesterday (T879) and I rooted it. But when I looked in the T-Mobile dev section, it was pretty sparse. Then I saw that the AT&T and International ones had so much more content.
So, are the ROMS made for the other Notes compatible with the T-Mobile Note? By compatible, I mean, 1) they won't brick my phone, 2) my radios and HSPA+ will still work, 3) generally stable.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
You can use +any+ roms in this development section. Some of the roms will make your phone run super slow, but I don't know which ones.
You can use the Canadian roms, but they make the phone real laggy too.
You can use the N7005 rom. Its the internatiinal version of our model.
You can't flash any roms or apk's from the international note N7000 -- that will hard brick your phone.
I have been having fun with some TW roms including Jedi and Jelly "Beans" but am interested in giving a CM based rom a try or similar to give a theme or two I have seen a shot that don't seem to be supported in TW based roms. However, in the Verizon note 2 development forum I cant find any roms like that. The non carrier specific forums mention specifically Note 2's that have a different model then the Verizon varient and make no mention of the i605. So I am at a loss wondering where to look and what roms I can pick that will work on my i605 and be CM or similar with themeing support.
I know I can't just flash other carrier specific roms such as t-mobile and att to my verizon phone, so I assume I can't just use the international or non carrier specific roms as well.
Any help? Maybe point me to a forum location or a rom that would be good for me to try and safe for the i605.
Well two things. First, check the original development section. That's where all the AOSP ROMs are. Second, you can flash other carriers. Some work some don't then you just restore your backup of it didn't whirl. I've ran Eclipse in my tmo note for a while
Having said that there are plenty of ROMs like what you want made for the Verizon note

I know that PACman mod worked well for me on my verizon galaxy note 2. I think that might be a good place to start.
I've used rootbox, carbon, and liquid on mine.
How likely is it that the official stock android rom on the just announced Google Galaxy S4 will be ported to work on the Verizon touchwiz variant?
It's based on the I9505 I have read but there are bound to be subtle difference which will prevent a simple flash of the original firmware working without some changes. If you ask me it's likely to work with a few changes to the firmware, which I'm sure will come courtesy of some of the clever bods on this very website.

Agreed. I just hope that there won't be any lingering connectivity issues.
Truthfully... I see ports coming very fast, but not fully functioning, Sort of like something for us with itchy "trigger" fingers, to flash the 4.3 or 5.0 if that makes sense, since the devices all have the Same SOC chips...

Actually right now, most evidence points to it being a variant of the T-mobile Galaxy S4 (SGH-M919). The problem with that, as far as porting is concerned, is that that phone is GSM only. So I can't really imagine any way to use that on the Verizon version without losing access to Verizon's CDMA network. Unless the Verizon radio is somehow compatible with the Nexus rom.

Yep. It will require some replugging of parts but it should be relatively trivial to plug those parts into a workable ROM.
I think the beneficial part will be having the full source code available or at least all the binaries required except for the RIL.
