No, you should not. If you want to earn money from android application development, think about making a killer app. Try making something that you never seen before.
But always remember : You should always start small; make your app simple , intuitive.

If you want to learn some money, think about making a game.
Simple, small, not so complicated. Maybe a kid's game sounds good? Something 2D or 3D , doesn't matter.
I know it could take long , but it's worth it.
Editos #1: Remember : Always start small, don't get too bulky and complicated. You can always add features to the games by updates.

I understand we students are always short of money and earning our own extra money is always cool . But you must also understand how people look for paid apps. If you make a simple app (in terms of functionality or graphics what ever it is), people doesnt feel like paying for it. As neroSS said, start small, new, intuitive, innovative and attractive and finally! Promoting it! Nobody knows you have done a app without promotion and xda does it for us for free!
TIP: Never re-produce something which has already been done. It doesnt attract more users. But you can always try them for learning purpose.

I would also be careful with using registered trademarks in your app (which GTA for sure is).

That's a really good point.
Also, look for another way to monetize your app, for example using ads, or making two versions of it (free - pro). Generally in Android, a user only pays for a very good app.
Hope it helps.

I don't see a point in having this application if you could easily just search online for them without the app. Thanks for the contribution regardless.

[APP][04.01.10][WVGA-VGA-WQVGA-QVGA] CountOnMe 1.0

Here's CountOnMe, it a turn-o-matic simulation with different counters. The idea is that, when someone is hassling you (maybe your boss...), you put out your device, and without a word invite him to wait his turn
Ok, i know it's a total inutility. But sound a bit funny.
This is a fully functional version, not a demo nor a limited time app. The difference with the "pro" version is that preferences are only available in "pro" version.
If you like this app and want to upgrade to "pro", send me a small donation, specifying you want "CountOnMe pro" and telling me which is your device screen resolution (wvga, vga, wqvga or qvga).
"Pro" version saves state on exit (on restart you’ll have on display the same number you had on quit), you can switch between 4 different counters, you can disable sound and you can disable the "now serving" images.

yes, and this way I would also make money, i guess. But what is missing in WinMo scene (and what, instead, is plenty of in iPhone one) is useless apps, made just for fun. The idea is that WinMo is not only a serious device, but it can be used for fun as iPhone. That's why i leave serious apps to serious developers

[Q] Remove anoying ads in android

Hi,
ik was wondering if there is any way to delete all the anoying ads you get by google in the androidsystem, because they are pretty anoying! They use up too much of my screen and I don't want em there!
Is there a solution for this?
I just want an ad-free android phone. If I want to see ads I go looking for them myself! I allready get this sh*t in my email, mail, internetsurfing, TV, magazines, ingame, etc, etc.
If it comes into your personal stuff it's just spam, am I right?
I just don't want no ads/spam no more in my phone!!!!!!!!!!!!
(sounds like a song!)

"I just want an ad-free android phone."
You just answered your own question download "adfree " . it removes the adds rather i should say it blocks the adds bu just keeping a blank screen . something is better then nothing. I use it myself, and i don't mind the little blank screen which you will never-ever notice.
Your device need to be rooted for using Adfree.
Just remember, you're hurting the developers who wrote that program for you to use. But, if you're ok with that, do what the guy above said.
i've never understood how online andvertisment works.
Never clicked on a single ad and yet they're making money?
sense none
It's called "impressions". They pay very little, but, if you've got a big enough audience, they are good enough.
Also, people do click on ads, you'd be surprised. I've clicked on a few, especially in apps that I really like and want to support the devs.
Well, I'm not asking for those ads! If i use an app, it's because I want to use that app, not because there are some interesting ads in it!
And oc I dont want blank space instead! I wan to use my screen for what I am doing at that moment!

You think it's messed up we live in a society where people should receive money for work they did?
You paid for your PC, does that mean all the software should be free? You've paid for a refrigerator, does that mean your food should be free? You've paid for a car, does that mean gas should be free?
When you grow up, you'll hopefully realize that people work hard for a reason.
Well, I guess it's for money, right?!
But still it doesn't mean that they have to spam it into my life!
You missed my point: I'm happy and willing to pay for what I need and people offer, but it's still my choise to go looking for it myself, instead of being spammed on my mobile, TV, email, regular mail, etc...
I perfectly know what I want and don't want. It has nothing to do with groing up.
It's just a shame that we live in a society in what this is all seen as 'normal'.
Ontopic: after experiencing adfree for two days now, I can say I'm happy with it.

For people like you it doesnt have effect, however there are lots of people, actually most of the humans, who are catchable for advertisements.
If it didnt create any turnover companies stopped advertising ages ago. Now they are willing to pay huge amounts of money to get advertising time during a important tv event...so this is a cheap way for small companies to get their names into the already overloaded free market where we luckily live in.
For you it is one of the downsides of this free world, for them it is an oppurtunity to increase business.

[Q] [QUESTION] What am I doing wrong?

Hi,
I've got 3 apps/live wallpapers currently on the market (links listed below in my signature), all with free and donation versions. Between them they have had just under 32,000 downloads in the last four months. They've been rated between 4 and 5 stars with positive feedback.
Can anyone think of a reason why I've only had a couple of dozen sales of the donation versions? (Many thanks if you have bought one )
It can't be lack of visibility or quality as the free versions seem to be quite popular and are getting healthy reviews. The donation versions have extra functionality as a bonus incentive. It's not price - they are as cheap as I can make them!
Am I missing something? I am at a loss. Please can somebody point me in the right direction?
I'm not naieve enough to think I'll make a ton of cash out of it, just enough to even partially justify the effort I've put in would be nice.
Regards,
Paul

I am speaking from a position of total ignorance here but, if I were in your shoes, I would totally just remove the free versions...
Or stick ads in the free versions
Sent from my X10a using xda premium
Yep it is very very simple. Free, even with ads people will choose over the paid versions. Even at 99 cents it's enough for people not to purchase.
Plus if your apps make it to pirating sites, there is no point in buying the app. Even my sister can figure out the piracy stuff for android and she cant even install Windows 7.
I will give you my objective experience as a random android user.
I don't think you have done anything wrong. I installed both Dino Pop and Zombie Pop and found myself chuckling and having fun.
I think that it's just something that doesn't fit in the paid app category as much.
I usually pay for apps that I find useful or have promise of future, as of yet unrevealed, entertainment.
I don't know what the limitations of live wallpaper are, but even a simple game needs a) unpredictable change of scenery b) the need for strategy (to entice the mind to test its abilities) c) some kind of final challenge (maybe like a boss zombie or something, to give that sense of accomplishment)
These are just my super honest thoughts, 100% intended to help out.
On a related note, I used to love this arcade game called strikers 1945 plus. I always thought it would be awesome to have a live wallpaper game like that (but obviously not as in depth..it's wallpaper lol)...again, not sure how difficult something like that would be. Just my two cents.
Sent from my Nexus 6 through tears in rain.
My thinking...
Case 1: If I find an app for free that also has a Donate version, without any extra features, I will never pay for it. Period.
Case 2: Usually when there is a free app, that also has a paid version without ads, I will buy it if I use the free version enough to wish it didn't have ads.
Case 3: There is a free app (usually a game) that I use continuously every/every other day and I will see that there is a paid version. The paid version has tons of cool features, options, game levels, etc. If I get a little bored of the free version, and really need something extra, I usually won't hesitate to buy it. (Ex. Noogra Nuts, Navy Wars)
Then there's those apps like FriendCaster and Twitter apps with ads. The paid version of FriendCaster is $5. I won't ever buy it to remove the ads. I won't pay for it simply because they don't get in the way, and I can access Facebook/Twitter in many different ways.
Even the name "Whatever App - DONATE" is just a red flag to users. Basically they might see that, and just not even look at it. They won't even see that there are extra options available. You might be able to get away with changing the name (to 'Pro version' or just without 'Donate') and really push the extra functionality.
Just my thoughts about free/donate/paid versions of apps. Hope it helps
Oh, and I like your LWs, keep up the good work!
I agree and have had a somewhat similar experience. I have bought a live wallpaper before because it had added functionality and got rid of upgrade messages on the homescreen (photolive wallpaper). The free version was good enough for me to try it and see what its like, but still restrictive enough for me to have to buy it. I have also donated to an app called Llama, but this is a special case where I will donate more than the small amount in the android market because I love the app and the dev isn't asking what I am willing to pay.
I would say to restrict the free versions of features and really give people both an incentive and reason to upgrade the product if they like it. If not people will generally make do with what they don't have to buy. I went for 2 years with my first Droid experience without buying a single app, I just used add supported or completely free versions, but now I'm much more inclined to support developers when I find something I like and usually but not in all cases, that I can try first.

Many thanks to all of the inciteful responses. All very inteteresting points.
In a nutshell it appears that I'm basically giving too much for too little. I've withheld going down the adverts route as I'm not a great fan personally - but if that's how the 'many' prefer to go then who am I to disagree!
Does anyone else find it funny that you have to actually annoy Android users into paying for apps?!

The key to money is think "free = demo," "paid = full featured."
If you do that, and people like it, then you will get more money. I play a game, I like it, it's a demo, that person made a sale. They give it away for free, I'm likely to just use it for free and never even visit their "donation page."
It's like the old saying: Why pay for a cow, when you can get the milk at home for free?
Being not married, that doesn't really apply to me, and I don't pay for cows either way
---------- Post added at 09:42 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:38 AM ----------
Oh yeah... It should probably also be mentioned that when people pay for something, it usually gives them a license (or so they think) to rate it and comment more harshly, so don't be all shocked if ratings go down when you implement a pay-per-app methodology.

I think you're both right. If you could offer a demo with built in restrictions and then an unlock key. If you can avoid ads and thus the network access permission, which personally I prefer not to see on a live Wallpaper, that would be even better. Then the user has a decent live wallpaper with no strange permissions (for a wallpaper) but something always there to give an incentive to buy it if one likes the developer's work and or the demo product and want to unlock features. This adds value to the product because I would bet less people really care about donating than they would paying to unlock a full version!

Looking for "Natural Display Calculator" on Android 2.3.7 CM

Hey app devs out there,
I just looked for a simple but powerfull calculator via the android market. Found nothing but the "old school" ones.
Yeah, there are tons of calculators out there, one has more abilities than the other. But thats not what I am looking for!
I am WORKING with my windows7 laptop, word2010 and microsoft's math4. Give it a try and you will see why I love this combination that damn much!
I am studying machanical engineering, so I need some features more than others, but the biggest thing is it must be as written on paper, that is what word2010+math4 gives me!
I write the fractions just as I would write them on paper, right after x^4/y^2 and space it is shown to me not in that freaky oldschool style, like excel still does.
So, why not have such an calculator on android? That would give many high mathematic working people a chance to get rid of windows, get an tablet (for me still an GalaxyAce) with android and a powerfull but easy to handle calculator.
As I have no clue about programming, it would take me months just to get the first lines, but this job realy needs enthusiasts to get it the way I mind it.
So, if any of you here knows where to place this request, please help me out. There must be sitting some super brains waiting for another challange, this would be a huge one!

I also came across the same need. It is pretty strange that on google play there is no such scientific calculator app available. I mean, the "natural display" feature would really be usefull, particulary on big screen devices. Anyone knows if such an app has been developer since DaBigFreak opened this thread?

You guys were actually part of the reason why we decided to develop this app - I ran into the same problem and was amazed at how there were zero natural display scientific calculators on the store, while the Apple Store had tons. We're continually updating the app at the moment and just added programmable constants! If you could leave a review that would mean a lot to me :fingers-crossed:

Cool! I am actually having problemas with my smartphone so i had only the time for quicky trying the app. Now i have resetted it but still it's not ok. I am currently looking for a new smartphone. As soon as i get the new phone, root it i will install your app and review it! :good:
Wow, its a realy nice working calculator, but I definitly need integrals and matrizes. So if you could add this, it will be realy usefull at university

Thanks! We'll add that to the list of features to be implemented. At the moment we're working on adding history and favourites which is turning out to pretty painful. If you could leave a rating or review in the store, we'd be so grateful!

Before that, I'd love to see integrals, sum and matrizes. Then you can essentially do anything you want or that could be done.
Next big thing would be to make variables calculating available. Not storing a certain number as A, B, or C, but let the calculator solve an non-number equation to a specific variable.
Right behind that, setting up variables with a value, so you can define A:=5.0, B:=2*A and the equation only has A and B, the calculator gives the results.

All the things you've asked for are being worked on at the moment, but understandably it will be months before they're actually implemented. At the moment we really need traction to increase the visibility of our app, otherwise there's really no incentive for us to continue developing if it's going to be buried underneath thousands of crappy calculator apps on the Play Store That's why reviews and ratings are so important to us. We do take into account the many features that our users request, they'll all sitting in a document, slowly being ticked off one by one

Newbie help please with adverts for our apps.

Hi Folks,
We have paid a professional company to build our app for Android and IOS. There is no other app like it on either platform. Mass marketing is not a problem for us and we are confident that we will get many users.
The apps are free with adverts or paid to remove. The company we have paid a lot of money said they have no clue about adverts, which they are now telling us after we have paid most of the money, so it is down to us to research. We are not technically minded, we just had a great idea.
Personally I did not want any ads but from research it seems it is the way forward.
The company plans to add just banner ads that pay when clicked on only.
My question is about the type of adverts for us.
From what I have read, there are adverts that pay for the amount of users and how long they spend on the app. Our users will spend quite a lot of time using the app as it is that type of app, you needs to spend time on using it for the info they need from it.
Can anyone tell me please what this type of advert is called or if it even exists?
Any other suggestions please on adverts that create revenue apart from having to click on an advert to create revenue. I know from my own usage that I never click on adverts.
Thank you folks for any help.
Peter

We were thinking to have banner ads but is there a way to get paid for time spent on the app looking at them rather than clicking?
We are also thinking about interstitial ad before they exit the app, is this possible?
We also thought about push ads that go to the notification bar.
Lastly we were thinking of an offer wall advert at the start after the loading screen just before they enter the app.
Do you think this is too many ads?
Thanks

This forum is full of socially brainwashed ****ing pricks. I have made many posts on various subjects on different accounts to test for the help on here. Never had one reply or one bit of help from any of the posts or topics. It seems from my testing that, you snotty nosed ****s only help people who are technically minded like yourselves.
I have not even had a welcome to forum post or a hello lol
I can bet that people will now post here, not regarding any help to my question but to become forum police, Time you could have taken to actually help someone with no knowledge and genuinely asking for help.
Have fun in your rat race. Try and take a deeper look at life instead of being selfish wankers, help others in need. It isn't hard for those that can help but I guess you will only say "use the search function" like some ****ing robot.
Hopefully now I will get a response, not the one I wanted but my results from forum testing will be good reading, although negative for this forum and its so called people.
I now await posts, reporters to the admins as it will make you feel special, wont it?
Drum roll..........

Hi Peter, whether you should put ads should depend on the genre of your app. Personally, I don't put adverts in my app (not even pay to remove it). In my opinion, apps with adverts are 'low quality' and profit orientated (no offence). Furthermore, putting adverts in your app will not earn you a lot of money unless your app goes viral. Hence, I suggest you look into a more sustainable business model other than ads. Cheers.
