Hi guys,
Got a bit of a problem. My home button stopped working, completely stopped. Definitely a hardware fault. So I wanted to reflash a stock ROM, use "triangle away" and clear the stats so I can send it to the vendor for a warranty claim.
So I used Odin, flashed the stock rom as per usual.
It installed ok, then when the phone rebooted it got stuck in a boot loop at the Samsung logo.
Now usually I'd cure that by going into CWM (or even stock recovery) and clear the cache etc. and it will boot normally.
But, because the home button doesn't work, I can't use the power+home+volume button keys to get into recovery mode.
I have a USB jig to get me to download mode. I've tried flashing various "Recovery's" (CWM, Touch, Stock etc) and I've tried flashing various stock ROMS. Nothing will get passed the boot loop.
My questions:
Is there a way to force recovery mode without having to use the home button?
Is there a USB jig that will force recovery mode like the one that forces download mode?
Or, is there a way to get to recovery mode from download mode?
Any help would be appreciated...I've exhausted everything I know and don't really want to pay $300+ to have it repaired when I know it's just the home button.
Cheers.

I'm guessing not, because he has flashed various recoveries presumably via Odin anyway.
How is he getting into download mode without Home?

adb won't work in download mode, so he has to hope adb will work during a bootloop. You think this likely?
You are not understanding mate.
Let him flash phiz from odin ... i almost certain it will boot to recovery afterwards
He wipe data
Phone will boot
Hell enable usb debugging
Then use framaroot to get root access
Reset counter
Use adb to get into download mode
Flash stock again
Its hard but can be done

Just to answer that, I'm using a USB jig to initiate download mode.
I wish there was something similar to get into recovery mode.
I also saw some time ago a dev had created a file for Odin to clear data and cache on Galaxy S(Epic 4G) or similar...that would be handy if someone was clever enough to make one for S3. Unfortunately can't use that old one because the partitioning etc. is different.
And yes I have tried ADB...but sadly it doesn't work in bootloop.
Not looking good tbh. Might have to bite the bullet and pay full price to have the glass removed to get the home flex cable replaced.
*sigh*
[SOLVED]
Ok, so I've sorted it.
What I ended up doing was wiring a micro switch I had in my workshop into the metal tabs that contact the home switch on the flex cable.
(See attached pic) So it was in effect taking the place of the built home button.
I held down that switch and the other 2 as per usual and voilà! It loaded recovery mode.
So, I cleared the cache and data. Rebooted. And wouldn't ya know, it now boots in the stock ROM.
Have since run ADB, (rooted, recovery etc.) Ran "Triangle away" and cleared the binary counter. Installed stock recovery. Unrooted.
Cleaned it all up and it looks as stock as a rock.
Off to the vendor tomorrow for warranty claim!
Thanks for trying to help guys. Much appreciated.
Hopefully this thread may be of use to someone in the future.
Feel free to email me if you want specifics to sort yours out.
Cheers.:good:

I would like to point out though, you must have opened the back cover for this.
Cost of replacing the home button is so small that it is worthless to ship it off for warranty.
Also, your warranty is now void because you wired other things onto the motherboard.
The best thing is though, you know it is still functional :good:
Good job and much praise for your huevos.

Yes, I did have to open the back to access the terminals. However I was careful and as I mentioned, I cleaned it up so there were no marks or prints etc.
And you're right, the cost of a button (in this case, the flex circuit cable + button) is very low, only a few $ off eBay. However, to replace the button and cable, the glass has to be removed. To do this, they have to heat the glass and separate it from the chassis/LCD/digitizer, replace the parts, replace the adhesive and refit the glass. (not the best design from Samsung to access a simple switch, otherwise I would have just done it myself) Not a job that I want to attempt myself with limited tools.
I've been quoted anywhere from $100-$300 to do this...most of the cost is labour.
Also, with Samsung repairing under warranty, if they happen to break the glass or LCD etc. it's not my problem.
Anyway, it's all a moot point. The warranty claim was accepted and I will have the phone back in 5-10 working days fully repaired for free.
Definitely pays to have huevos at times. ;
Cheers.:good:

Apologies if this has been asked before, or if it is a noob question, but I couldn't find my exact problem on XDA or on Google.
I need to return my S3 for warranty purposes but it developed problems after rooting. I had rooted it using the Samsung Galaxy S3 Rootkit 4.0 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1703488. I installed the insecure kernel but I did not yet install CWM or a custom ROM. I updated to BLG8 via Kies this morning.
Following the video guide on the sticky on the stock ROM page (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646610), I used Triangle Away to reset the binary count. This is where it went wrong.
I no longer have access download mode - it simply boots normally. I am pressing home, vol down then power. Without download mode, I cannot use ODIN to install stock firmware to return the device to stock and remove the modified tag. Could someone point me in the right direction?

try one of this:
1) pull battery, ready your finger at volume down, home, and power. then insert battery.
2) usb jig.
if successful, use cf-root to gain root, then try triangle again.

You are a lifesaver. Method 1 has worked and I am in download mode. Fingers crossed that the rest of the process runs smoothly.
Edit: Great news, everything is back to stock. Status normal, flash counter 0. When I got into download mode, it showed that Triangle Away had worked so there was no need to repeat it. I have ordered a USB jig for a few £ - money well spent if it is ever needed.

nice....i life saver for others, but i can't save for my galaxy ACE. damn stupid noob ace. lol.
A couple days ago, my Galaxy s2 i-777 (unrooted stock) would not start up past the splash screen. Today, I finally tried to do a factory reset in recovery mode, and there was a message about not being able to access some csc folder. My phone remained in bootloop, and when I tried to get back to recovery mode - I would see the dreadful "Deleting Cryption Meta data" message.
I proceeded to try the instructions in this post : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=27368753&postcount=7
I managed to flash my phone with CWM5.0.3 using Odin (The PDA option - is that right?) It changed my splash screen to one with 9100 on the front, and a yellow triangle. My flash counter was also incremented to 1.
I then attempted to flash with the Siyah kernel again using Odin (with the PDA option). The good news is that I can now get to Siyah's Recovery mode, but the phone is still bootlooping. And I'm pretty sure my flash counter has incremented again.
Here's my difficulty:
1. I want to find a way to get my images/videos off my phone. (We just had our first kid and all his photos from birth are in there :|)
2. I plan to get a jig, reset my counter and restore to stock unrooted. Is this still possible?
How do I do these two things?
Thanks so much everyone - I've really appreciated all the posts I've been reading for assistance already!
=======
So I figured out how to get my photos/videos off - amazingly, even after a factory reset - they are all still in my phone! I decided to re-flash CWM as suggested in the post linked above. Went to the recovery menu and did a clear data/factory reset. I was about to try the format sd card option (which admittedly I had skipped earlier because I was concerned about losing photos/vids) but then decided to try mounting the sd card instead. Then I reconnected the phone to my computer and was able to use it as a USB storage device, and view all my files! Now I'm copying over my app data, pics and videos.
I just ordered a jig off amazon, and hopefully I'll be able to reset my counter and return to stock. I'm still not sure why my phone is bootlooping though. Any ideas?

Happy to see this my dude, glad you got them back!!!! Congrats on the new baby good times! I can't really be of help but this thread has some more info you can read maybe it can help you.... The link you posted is posted in post 2 via creepyncrawly but there is more info in that post. You are correct but, he would be flashing KH7 GB so the jig would clear it.... Triangle Away works on ICS and has risks "!!! THIS IS A DANGEROUS OPERATION AND COULD POTENTIALLY BRICK YOUR DEVICE. PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK. A USB JIG IS PREFERRED IF YOU HAVE A WORKING ONE !!!" (and by brick I mean brick - only a board replacement or a JTAG unit will be able to save you, don't mess with boot(loader) stuff unless you *really* mean it!) via Chainfire you're better never tripping the counter......

AFAIK, this tool only works with ICS.

Is it a boot loop-where your screen will go black attempting to continue booting, then re initiate the previous animation? Or just a failure to boot-where it's just hanging on an animation with no black pauses to indicate any kind of process completion?

It a boot loop if the phone tries to boot over and over again, only reaching a certain point, usually the initial (kernel) splash screen, then restarting again. However, many fail to boot scenarios are commonly lumped into the somewhat generic term boot loop.

So I just bought an at&t i717 note off eBay that was run over by a car or something. I pulled the logicboard out and swapped it into my note to test it and its working 100% so far. Now I also can't get into recovery. No matter what I tried. I flashed a stock rom via odin, still nothing. I tried to root the phone and flash CWM and still the same thing....
When I try to enter recovery it goes immediately to the download screen. Any help would be great I need to get this puppy cracked. I'm pretty new to android so it's tough to know what to do.

Here it is again...just in case someone else's having the same issue
Why don't you give this a shot....
If you are willing to unroot and root again, here's what I've been doing to return to stock.
1 - Put phone in "Download Mode" - phone connected to PC
2 - Start Samsung Kies (make sure you have the latest.....)
3 - From Kies, click on tools then "Firmware Upgrade and Initialization"
4 - You will be prompted to enter ESN and model number (it is ok to pull the battery out to get ESN and Model - phone won't die with battery pulled at that point)
5 - And follow the prompts
The process does take some time. I have successfully done this many times with success.
Try it out to see if that might help you.
Glad it worked.

Here mate try this. http://db.tt/MxD7F6xg. It's a temporary touch CWM recovery. Just flash through stock recovery
Anyway, is it a good idea to flash roms and stuff when your down button don't work? Say if you soft brick your phone and need to get into download mode to flash back to stock firmware, (oops can't as need the volume down key).
Unless you have a USB jig handy just to be on the safe side.

Well, if you have to root your device I'm afraid you have to repair your volume down button (I personally wouldn't know any other way to boot into Download Mode otherwise, but maybe someone else..)
In Recovery Mode you can just use your volume+up button to scroll, right, so there shouldn't be a problem.

What ROM? That will work if you still have access to a reset method inside the UI. If you have a ROM on there you must be running MDK, can't you just wipe the data off the phone with CWM or TWRP? The Root binary should be un-installed when you boot back up. Just delete the SuperSu app and you should be home free.

After the data wipe you could reinstall the original ROM couldn't you? Long as you have the file on your microsd card. That would probably just reflash your ROM though, it may not erase the binaries. Damn. Well I'm sure there is a way to do it like this. It's just been a while since I've messed around with the TWRP recovery mode.

Hey so I'm in a similar boat - I have a Verizon S4 with the ME7 firmware that the usb port will no longer connect and won't charge unless the phone is off (and only when it's plugged in to a computer, not a wall). It was rooted so I followed the instructions above to unroot it.
But here's where I think I'm in trouble - I had loaded the TWRP bootloader before I found out it wouldn't work with the ME7 firmware, and never bothered flashing the phone back (stupid, I know). Is there no way to flash back to stock rom via the SD card? Right now when I go into recovery mode, it just goes to the "Downloading" screen. Does anybody know a way I can get TWRP off?
Sorry hope I'm not thread-jacking but this is the most relevant thread I've found to ask this in.

The only way I know to solve your problem is to reflash ME7 using ODIN. If you have the ME7 firmware already you can't use the TWRP or CWM recovery partitions at all. With out those operating your stuck using ODIN and your USB port. Have you tried another cable?

Yeah I've tried a couple different cables, a couple different pc's, a couple different chargers. It will only charge when it's off, connected to a pc. When turning it on "usb cable connected" flashes up top, even though it's not. When it is connected and turned on and below 15%, it tells you to connect to a power source. I searched this and low and behold, several other s4 owners are having the same issue. It started happening two nights ago after I didn't get the phone on a charger before it died, then I charged it overnight - next morning it wouldn't start up. I don't think it has anything to do with having the twrp bootloader though, because it had been on there a couple weeks and restarted more than once with no issues.
If anyone knows how to fix the usb thing, I've got...lets say a $50 reward up for grabs. Not much but it's all I can afford to not void my warranty.

The problem with the custom recovery partition you have on there is that it prevents you from doing a factory reset in the settings menu. At least as far as I'm aware. If mobile ODIN worked on our phones I would say download that and re-flash with the tar file on your msd card. SafeStrap might be a way to give this a try. I can't link to another forum in here but I would look into that.
Maybe replace the usb port yourself

Well I'm not exactly sure what did it, but I used a small flathead screwdriver to bend the connector inside the usb port up a little, as I read that can be an issue with these phones, and used an old cable from a blackberry, and one of the two let me get it connected to the pc and flashed back to the stock rom via ODIN. Still won't charge with any combination of wall chargers/cables, so I'm going to take it in to Verizon. But it's a huge sigh of relief knowing that they won't be able to claim I damaged it by putting a custom bootloader on. Thanks for the input. Hope OP gets his problems sorted also.

If you were on me7 you shouldn't have been able to get twrp as your recovery. So if you are on me7 then your recovery is still stock even if you tried to flash twrp.

That may have been true, I might have been trying the wrong buttons to get to recovery. Still learning some stuff. But the twrp loader definitely changed the splash and download screen enough that I needed to get it off so that no red flags will be thrown when I take it in to Verizon to have them look at it.
Thanks for everybody's help! I managed to connect to ODIN by pushing the usb in different ways until I got a connection and sent it back to Verizon completely stock
