[Q] vol down key not working need help to root - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719
I was trying to use above method to root my sgs2 international version with stock android 4.0.4. The problem is when i tried to flash CWM via stock recovery i couldnt navigate through options since my vol down key is not working. So is anyone kind enough to show me the easiest way to root may sgs2 and flash a costum rom on my phone. Thanks in advance.
Links to the tutorials would help me a lot. Thank you.
Edit: the easiest method i discovered was to use adb. plug in your device. run adb. type adb reboot download. and there you have it

Here mate try this. http://db.tt/MxD7F6xg. It's a temporary touch CWM recovery. Just flash through stock recovery
Anyway, is it a good idea to flash roms and stuff when your down button don't work? Say if you soft brick your phone and need to get into download mode to flash back to stock firmware, (oops can't as need the volume down key).
Unless you have a USB jig handy just to be on the safe side.
Just my 2 sense
Sent from my Galaxy SII

As i said before i can boot into stock recovery but cannot navigate through it. If only i could change my recovery to CWM.

Whoops. Sorry, forgot about that.
Edit: Try flashing this through Odin http://d-h.st/Bcf. It's siyah kernel thats pre-rooted and CWM installed.

Obviously you need to boot to download mode and again my vol - key is not working

Well, if you have to root your device I'm afraid you have to repair your volume down button (I personally wouldn't know any other way to boot into Download Mode otherwise, but maybe someone else..)
In Recovery Mode you can just use your volume+up button to scroll, right, so there shouldn't be a problem.
Sent from the Matrix

Jig will probably get you into DL mode.

Ahh Sh*t keep forgetting. OK a USB jig automatically put it into download mode right? Use that and then flash through Odin.
That's the final way I guess
@Donnie, I don't think you can go up in stock recovery to get to the bottom.
Edit: MistahBungle just beat me to it

LOl, whether the repair or the rooting of ur phone, either way its going to loose its Virginity! for u
so go ahead and use an USB jig or get the phone's Vol rocker button rectified by a nearest Samsung Service center for u ( may be free of Cost if ur phone is still under warranty Though)

At least its me thats breaking its virginity when im rooting it not some other guys who mishandles my baby with his screwdriver. LOL.
Just watched the usb jig video on youtube. It seems hard. Still have to make it.

u can buy one from Ebay at a throw away price though

I think in stock recovery it doesnt go to the bottom then backup to the top.Youd need both buttons to move the selector.

[Q] Cannot access download mode after using triangle away

Apologies if this has been asked before, or if it is a noob question, but I couldn't find my exact problem on XDA or on Google.
I need to return my S3 for warranty purposes but it developed problems after rooting. I had rooted it using the Samsung Galaxy S3 Rootkit 4.0 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1703488. I installed the insecure kernel but I did not yet install CWM or a custom ROM. I updated to BLG8 via Kies this morning.
Following the video guide on the sticky on the stock ROM page (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646610), I used Triangle Away to reset the binary count. This is where it went wrong.
I no longer have access download mode - it simply boots normally. I am pressing home, vol down then power. Without download mode, I cannot use ODIN to install stock firmware to return the device to stock and remove the modified tag. Could someone point me in the right direction?
Dou you haw recovery??flash rom from recovery.

Thanks, but I didn't install recovery. Is it possible to install recovery without using download mode? Sorry, I'm new to the SG3 and I don't want to experiment without asking first while I'm in a stick situation

try one of this:
1) pull battery, ready your finger at volume down, home, and power. then insert battery.
2) usb jig.
if successful, use cf-root to gain root, then try triangle again.

You are a lifesaver. Method 1 has worked and I am in download mode. Fingers crossed that the rest of the process runs smoothly.
Edit: Great news, everything is back to stock. Status normal, flash counter 0. When I got into download mode, it showed that Triangle Away had worked so there was no need to repeat it. I have ordered a USB jig for a few £ - money well spent if it is ever needed.

[q] get into locked phone?

So I just bought an at&t i717 note off eBay that was run over by a car or something. I pulled the logicboard out and swapped it into my note to test it and its working 100% so far. Problem is the seller had it locked with a pattern and now won't contact me. So I thought I could get the phone into recovery and do a factory reset or something, not even sure that would work.
Now I also can't get into recovery. No matter what I tried. I flashed a stock rom via odin, still nothing. I tried to root the phone and flash CWM and still the same thing....
When I try to enter recovery it goes immediately to the download screen. Any help would be great I need to get this puppy cracked. I'm pretty new to android so it's tough to know what to do.
Thanks :good:
Hold both volume buttons down when trying to get into recovery.
still stuck
Just flashed another stock ATT rom, this one was ICS. Then I flashed cwm recovery and still just goes to the download screen! Getting pissed.
If I wasn't locked out of the phone I could get ROM manager and boot into recovery..
Any help would be great!
Definitely holding both UP and DOWN volume buttons. I've tried multiple times and still same result.
OK I am thinking the volume UP on this logic board is not working...

Yep...."adb reboot recovery" should work fine.
If not, boot into download mode and reflash the stock ROM and recovery via ODIN.

What about not being able to get into the phone to enable USB Debugging?
ANyone have any ideas? ADB is my only hope but there is currently no way to enable usb debugging without getting into settings. Can a ROM be customized so that the USB debugging option is ON by default?
If I can get into this baby then I didn't waste $100 :good:

I'm not sure that I can but ill look into it one more time. I'm currently trying to download NOVENADXLJ2 rom, it has a boot to recovery on the power menu. Hoping I can flash it somehow with odin!
Unzip the file. It will have an odin .tar file. Rhat goes into the PDA slot in odin. No checkmarks except reboot.
He got it brother...

Here it is again...just in case someone else's having the same issue
Why don't you give this a shot....
If you are willing to unroot and root again, here's what I've been doing to return to stock.
1 - Put phone in "Download Mode" - phone connected to PC
2 - Start Samsung Kies (make sure you have the latest.....)
3 - From Kies, click on tools then "Firmware Upgrade and Initialization"
4 - You will be prompted to enter ESN and model number (it is ok to pull the battery out to get ESN and Model - phone won't die with battery pulled at that point)
5 - And follow the prompts
The process does take some time. I have successfully done this many times with success.
Try it out to see if that might help you.
Glad it worked.

Home button broken, Not rooted, how to get into recovery?

Hi all,
I have a non-rooted Galaxy S2, and I want to get into recovery mode, but my home button is broken.
I have tried some "recovery booters" but they all require rooting.
You guys have any idea how I can get into recovery without an Home button?
Thanks in advance!!
unfortunaterly you cannot get into recovery or download mode on a non rooted phone without the home key.
2 methods.
method 1.
Using playstore download mobile Odin, root your phone and install cwm recovery you can get the files from xda developers app which is also at the playstore.
Method 2.
You can replace the home key yourself just follow the tutorial for replacing the screen, it will show you the location and part you need.
Parts are avaiable online.

Lol, ur device must be rooted in the first place to use 'Mobile Odin' app , hence its ruled out for u
AFAIK u can put ur phone into Dwnld mode using an USB Jig and then flash a Custom Kernel like Siyah v4.1.5 (tar file for ODIN) ( if u have stock ICS) to get root and latest CWM recovery app installed, then u can use the app to reboot ur phone into recovery mode
What does such a Jig cost, and where do I buy one?

Download mobile odin and try flash another kernel.
When you are attempting the key combination, are you doing with the phone on, or off?
The phone has to be off for them to work. If you do it with the phone on, it will only register the power button hold, and reboot normally.
Also, in what universe would it be considered any kind of brick if the phone works normally? (Never mind that I consider there to be no such thing as a "soft" brick)

He said to use Mobile ODIN, mobile ODIN is phone version of ODIN for desktop.
Install it and use it to flash Siyah kernel (.tar), It will automatically reboot device into its own flashing kernel. Once it flashes Siyah you can then try again to reboot into recovery or download.
[EDIT] Ok just re-read and you was on stock kernel so I'm assuming you're not rooted. In thsi case you need to try and do a direct soft-reboot into recovery. Download a rebootiong program off the Pplay store like "Hot Reboot". In this app you will have a option to reboot in recovery or download modes.
REMEMBER NOT TO DO ANY SORT OF WIPE IN STOCK RECOVERY OR YOU WILL BRICK DEVICE AND NEED NEW MOTHERBOARD.

[SOLVED][Q] Home button faulty - Can't boot into recovery

Hi guys,
Got a bit of a problem. My home button stopped working, completely stopped. Definitely a hardware fault. So I wanted to reflash a stock ROM, use "triangle away" and clear the stats so I can send it to the vendor for a warranty claim.
So I used Odin, flashed the stock rom as per usual.
It installed ok, then when the phone rebooted it got stuck in a boot loop at the Samsung logo.
Now usually I'd cure that by going into CWM (or even stock recovery) and clear the cache etc. and it will boot normally.
But, because the home button doesn't work, I can't use the power+home+volume button keys to get into recovery mode.
I have a USB jig to get me to download mode. I've tried flashing various "Recovery's" (CWM, Touch, Stock etc) and I've tried flashing various stock ROMS. Nothing will get passed the boot loop.
My questions:
Is there a way to force recovery mode without having to use the home button?
Is there a USB jig that will force recovery mode like the one that forces download mode?
Or, is there a way to get to recovery mode from download mode?
Any help would be appreciated...I've exhausted everything I know and don't really want to pay $300+ to have it repaired when I know it's just the home button.
Cheers.

adb won't work in download mode, so he has to hope adb will work during a bootloop. You think this likely?

Just to answer that, I'm using a USB jig to initiate download mode.
I wish there was something similar to get into recovery mode.
I also saw some time ago a dev had created a file for Odin to clear data and cache on Galaxy S(Epic 4G) or similar...that would be handy if someone was clever enough to make one for S3. Unfortunately can't use that old one because the partitioning etc. is different.
And yes I have tried ADB...but sadly it doesn't work in bootloop.
Not looking good tbh. Might have to bite the bullet and pay full price to have the glass removed to get the home flex cable replaced.
*sigh*
[SOLVED]
Ok, so I've sorted it.
What I ended up doing was wiring a micro switch I had in my workshop into the metal tabs that contact the home switch on the flex cable.
(See attached pic) So it was in effect taking the place of the built home button.
I held down that switch and the other 2 as per usual and voilà! It loaded recovery mode.
So, I cleared the cache and data. Rebooted. And wouldn't ya know, it now boots in the stock ROM.
Have since run ADB, (rooted, recovery etc.) Ran "Triangle away" and cleared the binary counter. Installed stock recovery. Unrooted.
Cleaned it all up and it looks as stock as a rock.
Off to the vendor tomorrow for warranty claim!
Thanks for trying to help guys. Much appreciated.
Hopefully this thread may be of use to someone in the future.
Feel free to email me if you want specifics to sort yours out.

I would like to point out though, you must have opened the back cover for this.
Cost of replacing the home button is so small that it is worthless to ship it off for warranty.
Also, your warranty is now void because you wired other things onto the motherboard.
The best thing is though, you know it is still functional :good:
Good job and much praise for your huevos.

Yes, I did have to open the back to access the terminals. However I was careful and as I mentioned, I cleaned it up so there were no marks or prints etc.
And you're right, the cost of a button (in this case, the flex circuit cable + button) is very low, only a few $ off eBay. However, to replace the button and cable, the glass has to be removed. To do this, they have to heat the glass and separate it from the chassis/LCD/digitizer, replace the parts, replace the adhesive and refit the glass. (not the best design from Samsung to access a simple switch, otherwise I would have just done it myself) Not a job that I want to attempt myself with limited tools.
I've been quoted anywhere from $100-$300 to do this...most of the cost is labour.
Also, with Samsung repairing under warranty, if they happen to break the glass or LCD etc. it's not my problem.
Anyway, it's all a moot point. The warranty claim was accepted and I will have the phone back in 5-10 working days fully repaired for free.
Definitely pays to have huevos at times. ;
Cheers.:good:
