This issue is driving me insane. It appeared with Amber / GDR2.
I thought it was only with the Pro Cam app, but it extends to every single other camera app (tried ProShot, OneShot, 6tag, everything) out there, including the default WP8 camera - it's more easily noticeable on Pro Cam though.
You take a picture (try taking a picture of any silver or grey object, doesn't matter the lighting, it's the best color to notice the tint) and it's perfect. Two seconds later, the post-processing kicks in and results in a very yellow tinted, blurry picture. I thought it was the viewer on Pro Cam, so I transfered it to my PC and it's not. It's really awful, because you see, as soon as you take the shot, a very sharp, very nice coloured picture just to see it being destroyed by horrible post processing two seconds after.
I've been searching similar cases on the internet and I found a great number of people with the same problem, specially on reddit and Windows Phone centered blogs. I don't think Nokia is doing anything about it soon and GDR3 will probably be as late as ever to correct it.
Any ideas how to bypass the auto post processing? I tried every single setting on Pro Cam and default camera and the result is the same.
Examples:
As soon as you take the picture it looks like this

A second later it's turned into this mess. It's not just the quickviewer. The file turns exactly like this.

The camera apps process the pics to a lower resolution to make them less processor-hungry and easier to view on the phone. And, the yellowish color happens to be one of the processed results.
But, if you upload your pics to your computer (or SkyDrive) you'll notice that the yellowish color is gone, the pics are beautiful and in high-resolution (Try to watch them on a HD screen and you'll see what I mean).
It is a known flaw and they're probably working on an update as we write this.

To be honest, the uploaded photos still not really good.
I think Nokia need pay more effort to the camera in 920, even my Dad's 520, the white balance and sharpness is much better than my 920
i dont have any yellow tint on photos... use Nokia Camera v4.4.0.8 app (upgraded from Pro Cam) and GDR3 for developers on my L920...

On another note, the camera doesn't perform too well in the dark, with pictures having a lot of noise in them.

I will test the video later on....
As for night shots, it always takes some patience and settings to make a good one.
Yes, now that you mention it, there was once it could not focus in video mode no matter how long I held the half-press. I switched to photo mode to focus, then back to video mode again.
I've been having issues with focus in video mode. It seems to be hunting in light conditions, and oddly when the face detection is working (the box appears around the face) it still fails to focus on the subject.
The continuous auto focus on this phone is intentionally slow, this is way better then an instant focus that constantly zooms in and out to hold the focus which looks horrible.
My other phone Droid 3 does this noticeably, constantly focusing slightly zooming in and out to maintain the quality.
If you view something with a darker colour then its surroundings, the zoom will focus correctly shortly after.
-smc
I'm used to slow auto focus, but the problem I have is failing to focus at all. It identifies the heads, but the heads remain out of focus. The focus hunts, and will gain focus for a second or so, then revert back to blur-o-vision... I the most recent situation, the subject was against a white background so nothing to confuse the sensor.
Talking about the camera, i saw a video review and the phone being reviewed had touch focus how did they set it like that?

When in the camera, press your menu button and you will get an additional menu come up with the option for Capturing method. It's in there.

I had smile detection on so the focus option was grey out. Thanks for that
Im also having issues with the camera not focusing as it should. Taking a photo can sometimes take up to 8-10 seconds when I have to repress the camera button. Is that a software issue or hardware? In other words, should I return the phone to the store or wait for the ICS to (hopefully) fix it?
if your video is blurry while recording try to press camera shutter half way and it will focus automatically
if there is lot of noise while taking picture try to change focus mode from the face dectection to the single mode focus and that will improve the picture quality especially if not taking a poirtrate picture!!
--------------------------
there is no rapid focus in the xperia s the focus is half automatic so this is work the same way as the focus in camera before half way camera shutter and it will dramatically improve the quality of the video
anyone else not able to take a pic from the home screen by just holding down the camera button? its works in standby mode but not in homescren mode..
I had this problem I went onto the camera app n then went into settings and changes the focus setting to single focus n my problem is solved hope that helps some people
Hi,
onthe firs step I'm sory for my english.
Last time I change my android 2.3 to ICS alpha but it don't work. When I go back to before configuration (android 2.3 with flashtool), and when I go to galery to see my pictcures everythings was fine, but when i tap and chose photo ( i take the photo before with this phone) it was refresh (but only once) and focus. But when I zoom it was blurred and never refresh. On my zte blade when i change size photo and enlrage, photo refreh again and it is clear. What can i do without instaling diferent photo manager from google play.
Go the settings>apps and select clear data for the gallery app. Hope this works.
I do this, but the problem is still stay
unmount your memory card, remove it from phone, shutdown your phone, turn it on, put card back in, wait a minute or two, now check gallery.
it still not clear when size up

Hm, I just read your post once again, and go to my phone and check.
I opened my gallery, click on image, first image is blurry then it gets clear, after i pinch to zoom it gets a bit blurry but it doesn't get any clear.
So as far as I see, that's normal.
I also find it strange, but that was across all ROM's that I tried, so I think it's normal
Ah yes, I see what you mean now. Stock gallery will never show high res photos in full resolution even if you zoom in (except for camera pics) . For instance, if i have a long rage comic (10 panel+) i have never been able to read the text, even after zooming in 100%. It's a bug or on purpose built in thing. Quickpic is better anyway

In my post I was referring to camera pictures.
So in your case when you zoom camera pictures, the get blurry while zooming, but then gets clearer?

These are 2 pictures zoomed 100% in the stock gallery. 1 taken by the camera at 6MP 16:9, the other is just 1,4Mp. For the photo, I can zoom in to 100%, but for other pictures, I can't.

I can only speak for myself. All my shots taken with the official Samsung camera app. If I apply a filter, I only use apps on my Alpha. For those shots I used a filter in Camera360. The only other editing apps I use are Adobe Photoshop Express, VSCO Cam and Snapseed. All android apps, and really only a few filters.
Thanks for your explanation gavinfabl!

Only modification i have done is cropped and sharpened the first pic in picasa (it is called google photos or something) app. rest of pics are taken with stock camera app, because it seems to choose shutter speed and ISO more adequately than other apps. If someone knows app, that would prefer longer shutter over higher ISO please suggest.

Picture Stabilization because it appears to
leave shutter open longer primarily for low light shots but can be used other ways.
I think the trick may be to put phone down or Tripod mini etc and voice actuate the Camera to avoid motion on longer exposures.
Everyone else REALLY nice , sharp photos !
Some think it is the exact same sensor as S5 but lowered to 12 megapixels in firmware.
Is it sharper than S5 ?
Here is an example of using picture stabilization AND moving exposure up to +2 for a night shot in Miami Beach- it was much darker than it appears here and I rested phone on Latte Cup and voice activated shutter because this is a long exposure ( HDR must be off to go up to +2 exposure) .

Gavin I see you do great work with phone cams , cameras, etc etc.
With Alpha are you using a Tripod to get it so sharp and possibly using picture stabilization for longer exposures in daylight even though not needed ?
Or are the filters sharpening in edits ?
Thanks.

No tripod needed with the phone. It's got a good camera to start off with.
Some say Alpha is same Sensor as S5 but clocked down to 12 megapixels in firmware.
Do you think S5 is more detailed and sharp than Alpha ?
And will S6 be in your hands soon so I can get your opinion on that one ?
Hi!
These days I tried to take a photo of the stars with different apps and only the original app of camera is giving me the best results.
When I take the photo using the HDR+, and then go fast to the gallery, before the process is completed, I can see a photo full of stars. if I take a screenshot, the stars disappear. Maybe, next time I'll try to take a photo of the screen with other camera.
When the HDR+ process is completed I can't see any stars.
Anybody knows how to stop this process and get the photo with stars or maybe change the HDR+ processing to remove the noise but not the stars?
I know, It's strange, but I can give proofs if no one experimented the same. Perhaps, all the white points are noise but seems like stars...
Thanks in advance.
PD: I thought that in the screenshots there would be stars, but I didn't checked them until I started to write this post. Maybe at night I could repeat the process and take photos of the screen.

Use Manual Camera and shoot RAW. Anything else probably treats the stars as noise and eliminates them.

Ok guys, thanks for your help, but.. case closed.
It's just noise, here are the photos of the sky. One is the preview (HDR+ processing) with white dots and the second one is only black, because there weren't any stars at that time in the sky.

PD: Sorry for the quality of the photos.
It's there any way to lessen the saturation of the picture without having to go into pro mode. Most of the colors in the photo are okay but the reds almost glow. I've never minded Samsung saturation but this is a bit much. Just not sure what settings that I could change to adjust this. Below I've attached S23U vs Pixel 7 pro. Pixel is more realistic.

Post processing red channel contrast curve edit on a color calibrated monitor.
Yeah that's a pain.
Your display may be part of the problem. Set display to "natural" setting. The vivid setting will cause this. Regardless if it's cam or the display calibration is sort in the air.
Oh dang. I take this back. The pictures looked more vivid because I was viewing it in the sun. Coming back inside, the pictures look more how I like it.
Yeah try to avoid using in direct sunlight as it's hard on the display. In sunlight the vivid setting may help reduce washout. Don't know if it auto toggles that on for bright viewing conditions for that model or not. Sort of looks like it does...
Turning off scene optimization in camera settings will help some. You can also change the saturation after the fact with an image editor. Google photos has that built in. Also turn on raw+jpeg in pro mode and use pro mode for high value shots.

You're right. It's slightly more saturated than I would like but it's better than what I was seeing in the direct sunlight.
Saturation of most scenes is on the aggressive side, but the sky on a sunny day is ATROCIOUS. The blue is way way way too saturated and dark, and very difficult to correct in post.
The only way I have found to fix saturation via a permanent setting is in pro mode.Click the icon in the upper write of the screen, adjust saturation (-5 works well IMO), tweak other things (I brought up the shadows to +8, highlights down to -5, contrast down to -3). Then go to settings and under "Settings to remember" make sure that mode and filters are selected. You will have to always shoot in Pro mode for this to have effect, I think. Alas a saturation adjustment is not available in regular mode.
BTW I tried gcam with allegedly "natural processes xml" and it was the same fugly blue sky.
