[Q] USB Device Not Recognized (have searched the forums) - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have googled and found a lot of thread on XDA Developers and other websites discussing this problem, but none of the suggested solutions worked for me. When I plug the usb cable to my sgs ii, it charges but nothing happens. there's no "connected as media device" notification on the phone, and a few seconds later "USB Device Not Recognized" shows up on the lower right of the PC screen.
I have tried using the galaxy s ii usb cable and the galaxy s4 usb cable (which is brand new and works flawlessly with SGS4). My phone is Android 4.1.2 and unrooted.
These are the things I have tried so far after googling a lot. and none works.
1. Used a toothpick to move the micro usb "tongue" upwards.
2. Turned off the phone, get the sd card out, turn it on again and plug the cable back in.
3. Factory Reset the Phone. still nothing.
4. Use Samsung Kies on my PC and troubleshoot the USB connection.
5. download Samsung USB Mobile Drivers, install, and plug the usb cable again. still nothing.
please tell me if I miss something that I could do to fix the problem. this already happened to 2 PC (at home and work). I need the usb connection to back up some game saves using Helium because I'm switching to Galaxy S4.

Replace USB board/port, obviously on the fritz. Cheap/quick/easy to replace yourself (minus the time spent waiting for the part to arrive once you've ordered it). Search for similar threads, this has been discussed here a lot this yr - there are 4 different revisions of the board, your replacement needs to be the same revision which is currently in the phone or you'll likely have problems. Those similar threads will have all the info you need.

Mistahbungle's on the right track, except that there are 3 revisions of the board....not 4.....
Look at this thread.....

it would be too much a hassle for me. I'll just sell the phone for a reduced price...
Thanks a lot for your replies.

Hey this used to happened to me also and all i did was flash a new rom and it started working again

[Q] Micro usb connector broken?

My problem is that I cannot connect my Galaxy S II to computer. When I try to connect it only says "unknown device". I have tried with newest Kies and without Kies. With multiple computers with Vista and Windows 7 32bit. Also downloaded Samsung Galaxy S drivers manually from web but with no avail. And I have tried with Usb-debugging on and without it. I also tested USB-mass storage setting but it does nothing. Computer also says "unknown device" when I try to connect phone while in download mode.
The charging works btw.
When I connect the cable my phone just makes the normal sound but the mass storage android man newer appears to top tray. I have also made factory reset and cache delete from recovery but with no luck.
I would like to flash different rom with Odin but I cannot do that when the connection is not working. My current rom is official XXLPQ ics. The usb cable isn't the problem because I have tried with different cables which work normally with other phones.
Is the warranty repair only solution? Really wouldn't want to be without my Galaxy during the repair time.
Sounds like it's going to need a check over, if it wasn't for the fact you have tried multiple computers AND leads, as I had a similar problem but found it was down to my PC needing a fresh install.
Unless others with similar experiences have advice it doesn't sound good, as though pins 2, 3, or 4 have problems maybe, or that the board within the phone has bent up or down through rough handling/tug on the cable.
When did it start happening? I had a fright by tripping over the phone while plugged in, and ripped the plug out while launching the phone across the room. It broke the charger and thought I'd killed the port on the phone, but found if I propped the plug up and put weight on the phone it would connect, like this...

Might work if the board has got a whack like mine did.

As I mentioned earlier I have tried all that.

USB not recognized. Error 43

Just ordered a used Fascinate from Cowboom, and I've had nothing but trouble. It didn't come with the standard oem cable, so I've been trying to use old BB cables, to no avail! When I try to access mass storage, I hit enable on my phone, but the computer says USB not recognizes, or something along those lines. It charges fine with the cable, but can't access mass storage. How do I fix this?
Edit- tried with windows 7, 32/64.
I'm having the same prob with my husband fascinate (the pc recognizes mine with no prob)...I'm thinking there's something wrong with the micro port in the phone (it also got soaked in water overnight) but are you sure you have all of the right Samsung drivers installed on the PC? I know you can get them on droidstyles guide to rooting...that would be the easy solution...if you've tried that you may want to try different cables...although none of this worked for me it may for you...I'm now onto trying to replace the plug on the phone itself being i can see the corrosion in it...

Get this Samsung cord for $1.67: http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B001XXUOQI/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&condition=new
Then use that cord and tell us if it works. [Or you can try another micro USB that you have]
If it still doesn't work, and if it was originally purchased less than a year ago, Samsung will RMA it for free. Mine I got 11 months old, and would only charge, and not connect to the PC.
I had it sent back, they "fixed" it but it kept freezing every morning when I woke up [after sitting for a long time] so I sent it in again and they replaced the BGA or something and also the main board, and after that it worked fine.

USB device not recognised / This device can perform faster

A month or two ago I started experiencing problems while connecting my S2 to the PC or laptop using the data cable.
When I connect the cable to my S2 on the PC or laptop it comes up with the balloon messages in the system tray:
USB device not recognised.
Then a short while later it comes up with another balloon message:
This device can perform faster.
Sometimes while transferring data, it will disconnect and the file transfer fails.
Sometimes if the cable is moved slightly it will cause the device to disconnect from the PC.
And, of course, the file transfers are much slower than they should be and much slower than they used to be.
GT-I9100 Rooted.
I9100XXKKI3
Gingerbread 2.3.6 Stock (Frankenstein)
I haven't touched any ROM or flashed anything on this in like over 8 months so it's nothing to do on that front.
I removed micro SD card and tried reconnecting again, still the same problem.
I've tried different computers, still the same problem.
I've used different cables, still the same problems. Tried enabling and disabling USB debugging. Same problem still remains.
The USB cables and computer and laptop work fine with my S3.
All the correct drivers are installed for the S2.
I'm resigned to thinking it's a hardware issue as I've exhausted other options. Is there a simple fix or will this need sending back to Samsung?
I've had the phone over a year now but someone told me the warranty is two years?
All help appreciated guys. Thanks in advance.
Why don't you upgrade to ICS?

Probably because his USB port doesn't currently work properly.
@OP, this is often caused by a dirty or faulty USB port. You can try cleaning it, but you may need to replace it.
Try cleaning it out with a dry toothbrush first.
If that doesn't work, take the battery out, and try cleaning the port with a small q-tip with a small amount of isopropyl alcohol; let it dry for a while after that, then replace the battery.
If THAT doesn't work, you'll probably need to replace the part for the USB port.
If your warranty is still good, you could try to go that route, but you'll need to unroot your phone. Otherwise, I've heard it runs about $15 for the part, and you can replace it yourself. If you don't feel up to it, you can have a cell repair shop or Samsung service center do it for you, but it will probably be significantly more expensive than $15.
My opinion based on your description is the USB socket on the phone is wearing out/damaged. The USB socket is on a small circuit board separate from the main logic board. It's easy to replace and the part is cheap on EBay. Search for a disassembly/tear down video and judge whether you can do it yourself.

Thanks for the very quick responses guy. They were very thorough as well.
I will look into cleaning the port and if it still doesn't work I'll consider having it repaired. My soldering skills were excellent but I haven't done it for a few years, so may leave it in someone else's hands.
I haven't upgraded to ICS as I was very happy with my phone at the time. Also, a couple of friends who had upgraded to ICS on their S2 regretted it due to numerous problems, which put me off upgrading.
You can still use mobile odin and theres no soldering needed with the usb,it comes as a board with a ribbon cable.

I've had a look on the Samsung website here:
w ww.samsung.com/uk/support/warranty/warrantyInformation.do?page=POLICY.WARRANTY
It seems as though the warranty period on my phone is 24 months so I might just get it done via Samsung.
I'll contact them in the morning and see where I stand. If not, then the replacement USB board connected by a simple ribbon cable sounds like a doddle. I've seen a grade A condition part on ebay for about £8 delivered.
Thank you once again.

This is a Cable problem. The USB port of your device is wider now, that's why the cable doesn't fit well. Buy a micorUsb cable for blackberry, it's always very full and thick, then use it to connect your phone. The issue should be resolved.
I once had the same problem with my Nokia N8 and using a Samsung cable (which looks fuller and thicker) solved it.
Yeah warranty should be 2 years BUT youll have to unroot it first if your sending it to them.
They may also wipe your phone and stick on 4.0.4.
If you get the board yourself, check the number is going to be the same i.e the spare one I have here is GT-I9100 rev2.2.
Also other people have got a replacement board and the mic doesnt work(think the boards are sold as refurbished).
So its up to you which option you go for.

[Q] Galaxy SIII USB Connectivity Issues

Hey everyone, I have a Samsung Galaxy SIII (LTE Version) and no matter how hard I try I can't get it to solidly connect to my computer!
What happens whenever I plug the Galaxy SIII into my PC (Windows 8) is a follows:
I hear the device connected sound from my PC and the charging indication from my SIII. So far so good, but most of the time when I go to "My Computer" the phone isn't listed anywhere. After a couple of times plugging the USB cable in and out it shows up on the PC, but almost instantly after being listed I can hear the device disconnected sound and the window closes. If I move the cable for the SIII even a tiny bit I can hear the device connected sound almost instantly followed by the device disconnected sound and a message from Windows telling me that the USB device malfunctioned.
This makes the task of copying photos or movies to and from the device near enough impossible. The phone is only a few months old and is completely unmodified! The USB cable is also the stock out-of-the-box one. This doesn't seem to be a new issue either! It's been happening almost out of the box but I assumed it was down to drivers (which were updated but made no change) and now it's starting to annoy me very much!
Any help would be much appreciated

I'll be sure to give these a shot! Thanks!
No probs.
Beware if you dont know already, factory reset wipes your internal sd card. Maybe use dropbox to auto upload all your photos before you get to that stage.

Alright, so I went digging in the cupboard and found the cable from my old Xperia Play. Upon using that as opposed to the one Samsung shipped with the phone, the connection issues seem to have vanished. (I'll update here if they return)
I suppose this goes to show badly made the stock Samsung cables are which is quite a shock considering Samsung expect people to rely on them.
The cables are crap. The s3 has built in stability detection. If connection unstable with cable, lowers charge to 100mA.
Almost all the "slow charging" threads are down to crap sammy cable

I had the same issue, new cable did the trick!

[Q] USB not connecting

Earlier today I wanted to move some files about on my phone in preparation for a wipe and reflash. I managed to copy off a backup I made. Suddenly, the USB disconnects. Thought the cable may have simply disconnected, I proceeded to unplug and replug my phone, but no dice. The phone seems to charge, but USB connection does not initiate.
I tried rebooting both machines and reinstall USB drivers, but still no connection.
I ended up giving up for a bit and played a game for a couple of hours. Weirdly, during this time my phone happily connected, providing the USB options in the notification area.
I ended up unplugging my phone again, but when I plugged it back in a few moments later, it did not connect. It's since been connected for around 15 minutes, with absolutely nothing but charging occuring from my phone.
Any help would be a appreciated.
Thanks!
Edit: I have also tried numerous cables.
I've also encountered this problem, look for something called 'MTP fix' and see if that works!
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
USB port/board on the fritz. Replace before it dies completely (you won't be able to charge/etc). You need to work out which revision of the board you currently have in the phone & buy the same board (cheap; eBay/etc) & swap them out.
Search for similar threads, there's been a lot of discussion here about this issue/which board you need how to replace over the past few mths (including photos).
Aw crap.
I'll try the MTP Fix suggested above, but if that doesn't work I'll look into this. How difficult is replacing the board?
For those interested, board replacement information can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2335961
