Hello forum.
I was wondering will this mdpi phones get Kit Kat (4.4) update. I own SE Live with Walkman and I was searching a little on google about this update and I saw that "outdated" phones will get this update too. So my question is: Is there anyone who can answer this question?
Thank You.
I think they will not get the upgrade to Android Kitkat. If Sony didn't give us the Jelly Bean then how about the Kitkat?

if were lucky & find some one to develop it -to use- on our devices, like now mike with JB 4.3 does, maybe yes , but it wil be unofficial..
other point is the HW side if there big problems with some incombability or other probs even very good devs cant do nothing-
at now all is speculation. lets wait as big brother google releases the 4.4 repo than we can say SOMETHING aboth 4.4 on our devices
Hopefully someone will release a Rom
Our 2011 devices never get old

Maybe you are right, but here (goo. gl/s1Myfp) they say that: "... Xperia mid-range phones: Xperia M, C, SP, L, S, SL, U and many more" will get this update. I don't know what day think with "many more" but I hope that they will make official update for our phones. Google says: For Android KitKat: “It’s our goal with Android KitKat to make an amazing Android experience available for everybody.”. I really hope that we will get this update

i think many more just for Sony phone, not Sony Ericsson phone (like we use now :good but just hope for amazing developer made this update for our 2011 MDPI Xperia :victory:
Apparently KitKat will have a lower memory footprint than previous Android versions-but this is speculation as of now. Even so it is the kernel mainly which has lowered RAM usage hence if we (Xperia 2011) were to receive KitKat (which were not) then we would also need the new kernel-which obviously isn't going to happen. I personally don't see Sony updating older devices to KitKat even though it is more suitable for lower end devices-this includes our 2011 Xperia's but also 2012 Xperia's, I can only see the 2013 range getting updated to KitKat.

Its not only about Sony. Samsung also does the same. its a clever tactic to promote the new devices made by the two companies by reducing long term support to older devices. That is where rooting, flashing custom roms come into picture. Of course, more than long term support NEXUS has lot of other advantages as well

It has been confirmed on X10 blog that the X10 will get the official 2.3.3 upgrade. However, the X10 mini/pro and X8 users wont....Here's what the SE Blogs had to say:
Update on Xperia™ X10
I have been working with this blog for almost 1 ½ years. After lots of interaction and discussion, by far the most intense discussions lately were around XperiaTM X10 Android upgrades. We earlier stated that we did not have plans for further upgrade of the XperiaTM X10 beyond Android 2.1 Éclair, which was correct at the time.

However, I am happy to inform you that this has changed. We plan to bring an upgrade to Android Gingerbread for the XperiaTM X10 to generic trade kits end Q2 / early Q3 this year. We have heard your requests all along but until today have not been able to confirm this. The great work on our 2011 products XperiaTM PLAY, XperiaTM arc and XperiaTM neo actually has enabled us to start the work in a special project bringing Gingerbread to the XperiaTM X10.
I believe this is good news to many of you out there and I am sure you have many questions around this. I’ve tried to list answers to the ones that came to my mind below. More details will come closer to launch but let me know in the comments section if I missed any questions. I’ll do my very best to find out and follow-up!
Why are you doing this upgrade?
We have listened to our consumers. In addition, the development of the software for our new 2011 range of Xperia phones gave us a solution that made it possible to deliver Gingerbread on XperiaTM X10.
When will the upgrade be available for me?
The roll-out is planned to start end Q2/early Q3 this year. Today, XperiaTM X10 is available in the market both in generic trade version and in versions customized for operators. Due to the resources available in this special project, we will focus on delivering trade versions of the software. Regarding possible customized operators kit we will have to get back with more information on this at a later stage. But we want to be very clear already at this stage on the fact that some of you may not get this upgrade.
What are the components of this upgrade and what are the major differences from the 2.1 version of XperiaTM X10?
In short, we plan to bring similar software and functionality to XperiaTM X10 as we have in our new 2011 Xperia smartphones. Our ambition is to provide the majority of functionality of the Gingerbread platform, as well as the Sony Ericsson specific User Experience and features. The final scope of the software is still a work in progress. We will get back with more details closer to launch in end Q2 / early Q3 this year.
Will any functionality from the previous software version disappear by doing this upgrade?
Yes – the work is still ongoing so details will be communicated closer to launch but these are the current expected limitations:
The current plan is that the XperiaTM X10 will get the Android standard Camera user interface and therefore features like e.g. face recognition, smile shutter etc will be lost.
Moxier is replaced by the gingerbread native EAS functionality.
Mediascape is being replaced by the media experience widgets and music player included in our new 2011 products.
DRM keys for protected content on your phone will be lost in the upgrade process.
The Sony Ericsson Backup and Restore client is not supported in the Gingerbread version and will therefore be lost.
Support for bi-directional languages will be reduced compared to the latest version of the 2.1 version of the XperiaTM X10.
What are the major differences between 2.3 on XperiaTM X10 and 2.3 on your 2011 range, for example Xperia arc?
In short, the intention is that the Xperia X10 will receive similar software and functionality that we have in our new 2011 Xperia smartphones. The current ambition is to provide the majority of functionality of the Gingerbread platform, as well as the Sony Ericsson specific UI and features that are not restricted by hardware limitations (for example no HDMI out). The final scope of the software is still work in progress but we are working to minimize the differences. We will get back with more details closer to launch.
Whilst Xperia X10 owners are rejoicing on the news about Android Gingerbread heading to the headset, unfortunately it is not good news for the smaller Xperia models. Sony Ericsson has confirmed that as they need to “prioritise” their resources and thus there are no current plans for the X10 mini, X10 mini pro and X8 to receive the update. What we do know with SE is that they always seem to change their mind, so if you’re being optimistic maybe we will see it at some point down the road after all.
Thats ****ing it. No more Sony. SGS welcome.
Curse to you sony Dev Team....
Yeah **** sony.....no more SE for me ever.....XDA Developers crack the bootloader fast so that we can take a piss in SE's face.

SE was my favorite phone from the first i got my k510, and since then i never turned over to other brand. When i heard people are talking about android phone that makes me made up my mind to buy one, i choose SE. I love this phone and i'm starting to enjoy android OS, especially the development of it. But SE is very late on upgrading their android phones and now is the worst that there are no updates for my phone i'm very dissapointed about it and i don't think i can trust SE again.
The solution is simple: bypass loader on X10 Mini/X8 too, load custom kernel, overclock the processor. SE will be scared and update it. Same thing happened with big X10.
What the F***???
From now on, they can put their stupid phones in their stupid A****

I'm just sick of the fragmentation that occurs with android's lower end models, like the x10 mini. What's to say they won't do the same thing with updates on their new range of xperia phones (for example the XPERIA PRO or the NEO).

imho the ram is the problem, and teh single-core cpu.
ics was made for phones with dual-core cpu and 1gig of ram.
i'd be surprised if jb would run the same/better as ics on our phones.
and you have to admit, ics is remarkebly slower on our "cheap-ass" phones (mines a ray) as gb,
gb is fast as hell compared to ics.
even if i overclock my phone gb is still much faster @stock

we can get custom JB rom .. and who cares about sony's JB update i am sure it will suck as ICS sony's update did before..
i am currently using Custom ICS rom as i didnt like sony's ICS update
well. sony's ics is (4.0.4) just as fine as any other ics rom offered here (imho), if you're uninstalling all the unnecessary ****, know what i mean?
running ics 4.0.4 from sony now, uninstalled all the bloatware i dont need, and its just as performant as any other ics rom offered here.
all those tweaks offered here are (imho) just eyewash, tried so many roms, tweaks and stufff, believe me, my stripped stock-ics is just as fast(slow) as any offered ics-rom for ray here.

Dude JB runs with no lag on NEXUS ONE
One of the main problems is the companies always look for including their bloatware, no matter if it's unnecessary, bad and full of bugs; this slows the system performance dramatically. Yeah, nasty policies.
It seems like another war is coming, like when SE announced Xperia X10 wasn't going to be updated to GB. At the end, thanks for all the claims and petitions, they delivered it, but its version was terrible slow... However, that phone runs fine with AOSP.
So, the problem is NOT the hardware, but the bad software SONY delivers. I always wonder why SONY engineers have that level of incompetence.
Im still a SONY fan thanks to their beautiful models... But just for decisions like this, Im thinking about switching to HTC.
Btw, JB is supposed to be an ICS improvement, not a total system upgrade (this is confirmed by a friend of mine who owns a Galaxy Nexus and recently updated it to JB). More reasons to question SONY for not delivering.

i'm totally agree with u dude .. its much more hard to have the new high-end phone for some people :crying:
Sony does NOT underestimate their phones. Its just like someone said here.. The want uz so buy new phones JUST to have the new JB update.. Its not that JB would be slow on 2011 Xperias.. thats ****. . I bet my ass that they had 4,1 for far longer that they announced it... just *****ng marketing.. "lets put 4.0 to all 2011 phones and we can USE the "new" 4.1 to get ppl top buy the new models... thats so cheap of sony but I bet my ass its just like this...
Not only SONY but every manufacturers are playing games, they want users to buy new phones instead of using their old phones. every one knows our phones are not so old that they cant handle JB,. even JB is more liter and faster then ICS its perfect for our low end phones.
Because Stock Android dont have custom skins and custom skins is hard to make it compatible with the newest android releases.. thats why nexus s can get ics jb...
and btw dont bother switching to htc.. u know the htc desire hd the flagship ? not getting ics .. and also sony has updated the entire 2011 line.. xcept play but have released a beta ics.. and samsung only updates flagship phones.. so galaxy s advanced? never gonna see the dessert.. stays on ginger..
Sony isn't favorable to update the old phones, after all is new which it is better and so on. As well as to all other producers money is necessary to them. It is a lot of money.
I see you have ambitions to become a much bigger player in the Android smartphone market, competing with the likes of HTC and Samsung.
Well, you have started doing the right things, for example, you have a great lineup of phones, and you offer the ability to unlock the bootloader (abiet forfeiting our warranty, but that's no different to what HTC do). However the key area in which you are failing is the key area where ALL Sony products fail. SOFTWARE.
If you truly want to get some mainstream love, you need to be investing in software, not just on mobile, on all your products. However on Android, you need to be talking about Jellybean, and you need to be aiming to get it out on your flagship devices before Samsung does. It's really that simple. If you demonstrate prompt and reliable software updates to the latest OS, then consumers will come.
You also have to understand, that now Jellybean has been out for several months, and there are devices already running it (abiet Nexus devices), it's always going to be a hard sell to try and sell a ICS based device, and you are going to get slaughtered by the press for this (much more than other companies doing the same, simply because you are Sony and you aren't American).
A small chance Sony reads this?
Try Sony forums.

sorry... but till Gingerbread, the Sony (Erricson) software ist one of the best optimiced firmwares around... not that Big Bloatet batterydrain like HTC Sense **** and not so ugly and buggy like Touchwitz... And ICS is just startet and i belive in further FW Releaces, ICS will be great like Gingerbread Firmware.
i meen Samsung kicks out new releases very fast, but with uch more bugs like Sony. And when we talking about optimation - Sony kicks in the Ass of Samsung and HTC..
for real: no other firmware (im talking bout Gingerbread, not for the new ICS) is so fast, battery optimiced and beautiful like the Sony Stock Firmware...
i dont care about the newest of the newese from the newest (and if, here the XDA Devs has every newest ****t better than the Manufactures), i am carring about good working, good looking Software... thats the reason why im Changed fom HTC to Sony (Ericsson) and thats the reason why im stay with Sony (okay, there a couple of reasons more like Greenness)
let Sony a bit time to made a good Firmware out of ICS/JB - thats better than a to early, not good working Firmware

But Galaxy S2 is a previous generation phone that is going to receive JB. Will Arc S receive JB? Time will tell but for now all I hear is silence.
Don't get me wrong, I am a Xperia user but this silence is making me impatient with Sony. Looks and hardware can only get you so far without software support
I dont think that Sony makes our screens or hardware,so you shouldnt say that this is Sony fault.

Huh????
Sony design, build quality and camera is what keeps me using Sony handsets.
Obviously they don't make all the components that go in them. ( imagine the size of the factory they would need)
Apple source components from other companies as do all other handset manufacturers.
You are stepping out of the point of this thread though.
The point being made is that Sony are slow on the update scene.
And as we see from the replies, as usual we get an instant debate.
Yes...having the latest version of android is important to some. And yes it CAN be a deal breaker in the choice of handset to opt for but...
Anyone choosing a handset purely for a new OS isn't doing their homework or that impressed by hardware.
Same as someone choosing a quad core handset running gb isn't that interested in os.
I personally would like prompt updates to my OS but NOT if it is detrimental to the performance of my handset be it via bugs or tweaks that decrease functions in certain areas.
Ok so htc are quick to update but do you want an HTC?
Seriously?
They are ok but not as refined or pretty as the Sony handsets.
And their Desire Hd ( 1 of last years flagships) won't be getting ICS.
So that tells me that HTC are just as capable of OS issues as Sony.
Nexus are rebranded phones made by other companies.
They are only updated quickly because google push for it.
Doesn't mean they are better than Sony, Samsung, HTC ( which used to make the nexus handsets), or huwai. I will leave Motorola out of this list because they fail in hardware, OS and UI and updating areas. ( care to argue? Buy 1 and see for yourself)
Closing statement...
Why rush out a buggy Jelly Bean and get bad press when you can push out a polished Jelly Bean and get less bad press?

really?
Sony's ics release on the xps was full of issues and so was there most recent release for the xperia p (gingerbread) that left the phone basically unusable as a phone!
people on here talk of 'lets wait and get a fully optimized release' and that it will be worth the wait but im inclined to not agree. Just my opinion of course but all the most recent phones i have had from sony (currently own xps) have had fantastic hardware and awefull software...to the point where actually i cant put up with it any longer and end up getting rid of it for something else. Im sure i wont be the only one in this regard also.
Great design and hardware etc will only go so far before the thing pisses you off so much that you cant put up with it any longer!
this thread is stupid
So Sony aren't famous for bringing out update to devices quickly
When do you think they'll release it for the z2?
My opinion? Next year, they've already teased the Z3 or " the next big thing" coming in Q4 which will probably have android L on top
I'd love to see what you guys think

I don't think Z3 will have L. If it does, Z2 will get it just a month after the unveiling of the Z3.
PS Android L isn't even out yet, its still in dev preview. It'll take around 2-3 months for it to be finalized I believe. 3 weeks at minimum.
I agree. I can't wait to give it a go on my nexus 7

Don't be so sure Z2 will get everything Z3 will have.
I bought Z2 and still have Z1 and believe me, Z1 doesn't have many things (at least not officially) Z2 have.
That's the Sony (new) policy...
6 month cycle and push new device like crazy for the few first months, then they forget that device and put all their capacities to new device....
That's the life...we'll have to accept that...

I'm just waiting 'til a new CM or carbon rom comes out with Android L.
Sony has been not doing well with ART, so it will take a while for Sony to roll out Android L, I think.
I doubt we'll see L on the Z2 this year, not from Sony at least.
They have to put an ugly old-fashioned skin on it first...

18 month support from sony for a flagship. Similar with samsung.
How long is CM taking to get kitkat stable which came out last Nov, over 6 months plus and still not there.

Less important than if they will do it. They will.

Well, Z1 did receive Kitkat right after a month Z2 was unveiled. Here we are discussing next version of Android, not all the goodies.
Ofcourse most goodies will be there, I think Z has ALL the goodies Z1 has. Although Sony does release two flagships a year, the main focus is always the first one than the later.
Like Arc, S, Z and now Z2.
While Arc S, T, Z1 aren't so popular ones.

The TouchWhiz and Sense are quiet old too. The only competitor I can think of which brings a new UI almost every year is LG.

After checking out Android L I think it will be best for OEMs to ditch their skins and add addons using Play Store. Well as for Z2 goes our hope lies on CM and FXP team.

Touchwiz renewed for more flat design this year. Also, Sense changed its style for Sense 6.
It's only Sony that hasn't changed its design for years
Xperias are always given a update contract which lasts anywhere between 6-36months Xperia Z2 is a flagship device meaning that it should get 1 year atleast and android L Is releasing soon so Z2 has to get

Yeah man, Sony needs to update their UI style. But I would say they dump it in next update and bring stock. That will speed up the update time. I want them to follow Motorola way. See how quickly Moto G got the update to KitKat.

Sweet! Yeah, this isn't the biggest or busiest forum section, so donations will be rare. That shouldn't stop people from doing what they love though (ROM cooking and developing)

Ok, soon fix), but the task #1 port GPE 5.0
Sony confirms all Xperia Z series will get L - starting with the Ultra GPe.
The Z ultra will be the first Sony Z device to get Android L :http://www.androidpolice.com/2014/1...0-lollipop-will-come-to-all-z-series-devices/
According to Sony, the Sony Z Ultra Google Play edition is up first, which isn't a surprise. After that you can look forward to updates for the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1S, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1 Compact, Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet, , Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3v, Xperia Z3 Compact and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact. Awesome, right?
Sony's (non-GPE) upgrades will start in early 2015 with the Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z2 devices, and will continue on from there. I wouldn't be surprised if carrier integration held up a few OTAs, but at least Sony is committed to getting this done."
It would suck for us Z Ultra users to wait for the Z3, Z2, then Z1 devices to get 5.0 when we all know that the C68xx version will be sitting on the digital shelf before the Z3 release due to the C6806_GPe already having the OS would make for less work to get it straight to the unbranded C6806 before any other Z device.
It's nice to know that both the GPe AND Xperia models will get L. Someone could possibly make a ROM off of the GPe release of L before Sony releases the rom themselves for the standard Xperia Z Ultra.

Yup, that's the plan, so hopefully we'll have 5.0 on our Ultras shortly after the GPe, which will be in a couple of weeks (2-3?).

How many people here have a GPe that is capable of downloading the OTA? I've never captured one, but I know how it's done. On sunday, I'm going to California for a few of months, and won't have access to a computer to grab the OTA URL. Maybe I can manage it

Either way, the few GPe owners out there will show up here when the OTA rolls out. They always do.

I know of at least one developer that is active that has one. Maybe the release of L will draw @DooMLoRD out of retirement.
I have a gpe z ultra. How do i go about catching it?
I have a Z Ultra GPe. I'll try to remember to capture the zip before I hit update (can't promise anything with the excitement and all, though). Won't Sony post the new factory image online when they start to roll it out, though?

Just thought I'd give you guys a heads up. The 5.0 Google launcher (the one with the white app drawer) is extracted from today's dev preview, and I can report that I works just fine on the GPe ROM. It looks and works as expected. Nice. You can get the APKs (GNL and Google Search APKs) from Droid-Life.
Edit: Here it is.
