Upgrades before plan being switched? - T-Mobile HTC One (M7)

So I read from a few places that t-mobile is kicking everyone off their contracted, grand-fathered plans and offering them "comparable" post paid plans, and will also let us cancel if we want.
My question is, if we have an upgrade available should we use it real quick at Wal-Mart or Costco before we get switched over? Cuz the way t-mobile is now there aren't any upgrade pricing, but why not take advantage, right? Thanks, guys.

[SUGGESTION] SHOULD I GET THE International or AT&T's GSII?

i was at BestBuy last week, and was about to get the AT&T Galaxy S II, unfortunately i haven't established my own credit, so i have to deposit $500, on top of the $199 [phone price] before they sell me the phone. that's around $750 with the activation fee and taxes.
that made me think, should i just get the International Version from Amazon, since they're only selling it for $550? then just start an account with AT&T? or with T-Mobile, becuase i heard T-Mobile won't ask for a deposit? will it be worth it? also, regarding data speeds, will the international version be slower than AT&T's Galaxy S II? or will it be just the same?
i really like the International Version, because of the fact that it's the slimmest versus the other 3 US variants, and from the 3, i like the AT&T's version better than T-Mobile's and Sprint's, just because i don't like how the edges are rounded.
also, i need your reason why the version of your choice is better.
any comments, suggestions or tips will be appreciated.
thank you
International version if you don't need warranty.
I think either way you might need to do a deposit if you're signing up with AT&T though.
hmm, so the $500 deposit is for the contract? and not for the phone?? i thought the idea was, deposit $500, so you don't run away with a $700 worth of phone.. -_-
the deposit is not for the phone, its for the line.
It's for the contract/line. You pay $199.99 for the phone + $500 deposit for the contract/line.
Yeah unfortunately its very easy to rack up crazy charges on your bill so if you have no credit to show you're credit worthy, you get hit. It sucks but it could be $1k...

ahhh. i get it now. ok, so how 'bout which is better? AT&T or the International Version? will data speeds differ from each other?
IF you have an options, which I would assume, since you are asking, then definitely get the international. There are tiny physical differences, and some firmware. Some cases will fir both models, but not all. Some software will support both, but not all. In this case, if you want the greatest flexibility in software and accessories, go with international, as it's had a BIG head start.

thank you for your suggestion. now for the carrier? should i go for AT&T or T-Mobile? (since i heard they don't require the $500 deposit unlike AT&T) and also, is the data speed faster on the AT&T's GSII versus the International??

If your'e going with T-Mobile, you will have to buy T-Mobile's version of Samsung Galaxy S II, otherwise you will have no "3G/4G" data. You will only get EDGE data speed if you're using International or AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II.
The $500 is for contracts. If you walk into an att store with your own phone they won't ask for any money down. The only reason for contracts is to make sure they make back the discounts they give on phones. A contract is not needed if you have your own phone. Even if you're a terrible customer they only have to worry about a month. And how they schedule payments is your bill 'pays' for the next month. Even though your bill is based off your usage for that last month, you in reality are paying for the next month. That's why when you're late on a payment they don't immediately kill your line, cause they're not out money yet.
As far as what carrier? I'd go with att just for the chance tmobile deal goes through quicker than expected.
Having a phone through a carrier that is getting bought out = lots of frustration.
Having personally dealt with that situation twice, I can confidently say it's not worth it.
But since you wouldn't be on contract you could just as easily jump from tmobile to att (would be frustrating if you couldn't take your number with you, but our google overlords make that situation much better if you get a google number from them, no need to tell anyone your number even changed)
Obviously these are points with 'price being beside the point.'

@runtohell121 Wow for making my long post pointless. Too bad I didn't see your post till after I had already sent mine.
You're definitely right.
Tmobile uses both 1700 and 2100. One for upstream and one for downstream.
Unfortunately the galaxy s ii uses 850/900/1800/1900 bands for gsm.
Looks like att is the best choice, otherwise it will only be edge speeds.

ok, so just for clarification, if i walk in to an AT&T STORE with the INTERNATIONAL Galaxy S II on hand, i won't have to pay $500 for the deposit? With that in mind, then it would be cheaper for me right? Because i'm a college student with no credit. because with what you said, i think i will definitely get the international version.
Forget T-Mobile, since i work in Irvine, Ca., most of my co workers that are with AT&T, have better coverage than Verizon and T-Mobile. My only question now is if i get the International Galaxy S II, and start a plan with AT&T, will it run the same data speeds as with AT&T's Galaxy S II?

I'm not too sure about the contract question, but I still think you would have to pay a deposit IF you sign a contract with AT&T. I personally don't know that you're allow to get service with AT&T without a contract or I never done it before so.. yea.. I don't know.. but my guess is that if you go into an AT&T store with your international SGSII, they will say it won't work or something LOL.
As for the SGSII data speed question, it will be the same as AT&T version as long as you have the correct data settings.
thanks! but i need this clarified though. ive been watching videos of the international galaxy s ii.. i'm in love with it.
after googling and looking at at&t forum.. seems like you can do month to month with AT&T on an unlocked phone as long as it works. Just that I'm not too sure on what data package you would need.
Ok, so what does the "correct data settings" that you were saying mean? Hmm, data package? I might want a 2GB data plan. Is that what you were asking?
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA App
You will most likely have to enter the data settings to enable the 3G for the SGSII International to work on AT&T. By data pack, I mean you might be able to get the "dumbphone" unlimited since it's an unlocked phone..

Verizon Killing Grandfathered Unlimited Plans

http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/16/verizon-cfo-says-grandfathered-unlimited-plans-on-the-way-out/
Pretty sure I'm going to go in and upgrade to a Rezound tomorrow and then exchange it for the Inc 4G when it comes out.
That'll be your last upgrade with unlimited data. So torn about stay with vzn from here on out
Sent from my VivoW using Tapatalk 2
I actually think I'm going to pick up the GNex tomorrow to try it out. My wife has a Rezound so when the DInc 4G comes out I can compare all 3 and decide which I want.
I'm already on tiered data, so it doesn't matter to me.

It does me. It's the only thing that has kept me on Verizon (well, that and my wife. that's another story though ).
Hey guys,
Glad this came up here. So I am grannyd in on my dinc2 (signed 2yr in July) along with a really good old verizon talk/text plan and with a business discount. So all in all things are peachy for me atm.
So here are the problems: the wife has long been up and needs to ditch her iphone from work. Wtf do I do?!
1. Do I wait this out to see what the family plans look like?
2. Or do I upgrade her now onto a 4g phone and get in before the family plans come out? Hell they might actually be ok if priced decently?!
3. Could I get a used 4g phone add that to my unlimited plan?!
4. Should I add her a data line and get her an off contact phone so we aren't locked in for 2yrs?! Is that possible?!
Jezus this is f'd up. These greedy mofos will go down at some point. And here is praying that Google does it from right under their own feet (their own network)

So, assuming the Inc 4G is released before this change goes into effect...
First Question:
Will upgrading to the Inc 4G guarantee that I'll have the unlimited data for the full 24months, or will put the kibosh on it once the shared plans go "live." It seems like contractually, it would be hard for them to do the latter, but given how Verizon hates it's customers, I wouldn't be surprised if they tried it.
Second question:
I'm on a family plan and we still have a few people with dumbphones. Suppose they upgrade to smartphones and sign up for a shared plans. Will my unlimited plan just coexist and not be part of that share, or will Verizon say "You can't sign up for any new shared plan without obliterating any unlimited data lines on your account." Again, Verizon hates it's customers, so I would not at all be surprised if they try that second option.

Your 1st question I'm interested in the answer as well,:
Your 2nd question, I'm in the same boat and was told I could keep unlimited as long as the plan doesn't change ie same # of texts etc, but dumb phones upgrading would havto, as of now the 4g tiered plan, not sure if after they ditch unlimited if they'll stroke you into the shared plan though . Anyone know exactly when the unlimited plans will ditched?

When the new options are introduced, Unlimited Data will no longer be available to our customers purchasing handsets and signing a new contract. Customers who choose to purchase phones at full retail price and are currently on an unlimited smartphone data plan will be able to keep that plan. The same pricing and policies will apply to all 3G and 4GLTE smartphones.

So, I'm gonna wait at least a little while longer. I now know I don't need to rush out and upgrade today. Sounds like these plans won't start kicking in until "later this year" and they say they'll give plenty of advance notice so I should be able to wait for the DInc 4G to come out but it will be my last true unlimited plan upgrade.

As far as your first question goes, yes upgrading to the Inc 4g before the new plans come out will allow you to keep your unlimited data. And you'all be under contract for another 2yrs with unlimited. Once your contract runs out you'll still be able to keep your unlimited data as long as you pay full retail price for all your phones from that point on. The min you buy a phone at reduced pricing from vzn you'll be forced on to a new teired data plan.
2nd. Question not so sure about but I highly doubt they'll let two different types of data plans coexist on the same plan.

Won't be your last unlimited plan upgrade. Vzn released a follow up statement saying people with unlimited plans will be able to keep them but that they will have to buy their phones at full retail price. Once you upgrade through discounted pricing on a phone, that will be when they'll take your unlimited data away and put you on one of the new plans

yeah, not really looking forward to buying phones at full price
verizon really needs to clarify those already on family plans with shared minutes (like me and my wife)...what happens if she wants to upgrade? does that mean i get forced onto shared data with her?
cuz honestly, i wouldnt mind that much (mostly cuz on her own she wont use over say 2gb once i have my own lte phone) if she could still use her upgrades going forward if i could keep my unlimited data
Ok fom my expuerence if you guys have been with the company for a while just put up a ***** tell them you are leaving. Im with tmobile and i get great offers all the time that are meant to be for new customers only. whoa, I'm tmobile too but I have full unlimited data plan, all the bells and whistles and STILL have to pay FULL price for my devices! Complaining does nothing for me! My HTC SENSATION 4g costed me almost 700.00!! One good thing about tmo is you do have the option to take the device home and pay approximately 20.00 a month for the device. This makes it a bit easier than having to pay all at once.! But their data is NOT cheap! I have two lines unlimited data, one equipment charge (20.00)
My bill for last month was 254.00! That seems outrageous to me! I asked about it and they said I can cancel some services I have to lower it, such as hotspot tethering ect. But I need those services. I've been with them for ,4 years, seems like I should at the very least, get a reduced equipment charge! But I still have to pay full price! Complaints get me no where.!

complaining may or may not get you anywhere with carriers
a lot depends on who you complain too, how often, what the complaint is, and your history of service and complaining with them
many people have gotten ETF's waived, but it usually takes a series of calls over several weeks and months proving there is something wrong with their lines and services
complaining about your contract and what it contains, depends on what you are up in arms about...i really dont see being able to argue your way into an upgrade AND keeping unlimited data once the family data share plans start...regardless of your circumstances/history (but who knows)
a few years back (2008/9) my wife and i were extremely unhappy with our BB8830s and were each around 8-10 months away from an upgrade (me 4 months into my annual my vzw upgrade, she was half way through a 2 year)...i must have called 25-30 times and spoken to half that many different CR's and supervisors, demanding that they move our upgrade dates up to get the BB Storm (lol, ikr) or that when our contracts were up we would leave for ATT to get the iphone because its what we both really wanted
basically everyone i talked to gave me the "ok, have fun with ATT" talk and refused to do anything except move *1* of our upgrades up by a few months....despite my carrying on that we had been customers since the late 90's (well i had been) it all fell flat
other times, however ive been successful in getting replacement devices with no ?s asked...wife actually dropped her first tbolt and it stopped working (but showed no real damage) and we got it replaced for free w/o insurance...and i got my fascinate replaced with the inc2 when the speaker failed (and the fascinate was actually a used device bought off ebay a few weeks after its launch)
so its all situational i suppose
/end rambling

It sucks indeed along with the $699 full retail price I paid. Whatever though Ive wanted since we never got the first one. Atleast its coming!

So... I'm looking to buy this off contract since I'm not loosing my unlimited data. Currently I only have a 3g phone and never had a 4g plan (3g unlimited is mine), would activating a phone that was purchased without a plan make me loose my unlimited, or have a limited 4g plan???
And yeah this delay is ridiculous, it's a good legitimate complaint that could get the upgrade fee waved for some.

Good question. I'm not sure, about the 3g to 4g, but my guess is you should be fine. You'll need to get a new SIM for 4g. Best bet is to contact Verizon support and ask if it affects your data plan at all. Hold on to it while you can! Rumors have it that the unlimited plan will end this spring.. You may want to do the math and see if it'd be worth it or not.
The only way to avoid the tiered data plans is by purchasing the phone outright. So as long as you're not buying the phone from Verizon at their 2-year contract/upgrade price, you're keeping you're unlimited data.

If it ends this spring I'll buy it on contract I can live (barely) with 2Gb data a month. If I remember correctly the ETF fee is waived if they change your contract terms, not sure if that's if they notify you or not, i.e. a surprise FU from big red is reason to waive the ETF.
I'll get on the phone soon, thanks.
Got mine preordered today. Supposed to ship by 11/27 also. Cost me 740 and change but worth to keep unlimited data. Funny thing is the rep on the phone didnt even know what the note 2 was. Lol. Funny we know this and they dont.

I was bored so i called and asked your above question about coming from 3 to 4g. I spoke with the contract department so they say and they said if u pay full retail u will keep unlimited no matter what as long as its smartphone to smartphone. Going from 3g to 4g phone doesnt matter. Just make sure when u ordered or buy it u make sure u still have unlimited data. When i bought my S3 full retail they changed my unlimited data to one of their BS plans and i had go through over aweek of calling to get it fixed back. I also asked if paying retail to keep unlimited data was going to be ending by next spring and he said there is no imformation or plans to do that. Doesnt mean much since i/we usually know more than their employees do. All i can say is screw u big red for getting rid of unlimited data in the first place.

Thanks for the info If they are going to kill unlimited the phone would still be cheaper with the ETF fee paid (by ~$125 assuming they add it to the advanced devices page). If taking a subsidized phone means I have to go onto that BS share everything (get less) for the same price plan that means I'm going to pay full retail.

Perhaps the delay is to sell more RAZR HD and Maxxs more than the HTC DLX?

I noticed the first feature under multi-tasking is the "multi-window" feature. Since most US carriers dont have that feature from my understanding, maybe its to allow time to include the newest possible firmware? (long shot I know, but im bored and sick of waiting just like you guys and looking for any rays of light)
I am going to complain about the release date to directly to Verizon. I really doubt that they are releasing the phone late to improve anything. It is more likely that they are holding off the release to sell another device (as mentioned above).
Verizon seems to take customer complaints serious. This whole release has been a disaster.
Let me know what you send Ill spam em too

[Q] My phone upgrades are available, what are my options?

I'm on Verizon obviously and I was lucky enough (at the time) to have been grandfathered into that 1400 minute plan with unlimited data. We have two phones, HTC Rezound(mine) and a Motorola DX2(wife), both do for upgrades in August. I'm probably going to wait until some new phones come out, nothing I see entices me right now.
Down to the point, how can we upgrade without losing our unlimited data? What are our options, any way to get around this? My wife is dying for a new phone, here DX2 is 2 years old and falling apart plus I'd love to get away from HTC. I appreciate any help with this.
Really the only way is to buy a phone off-contract.
Yeah as far as buying new, either catch a sale right around launch and buy it retail or wait until the phones been out a few months or so until they're cheaper than the retail price at online auctions or classified listing.
Or you can add a new line and get a new phone. Then swap Sims and activate an old dumb phone on the new line which allows you to not have to pay the $30 smartphone package. Ends up costing about 12-15 after the 9.99 monthly charge with taxes and usage fees added on.

I guess you have to buy one off contract. Swappa is great for buying gently used phones. Or you could buy a Nexus 4 or Nexus 5 when it comes out.

Can I at least pay monthly if I need to pay full price? I really don't want to leave VZW but $1200 for knew phones is crazy.

I am pretty sure they will let you spread out payments.

Too bad I can threaten them by leaving and going to tmo or sprint lol. I also saw a post a while back that someone went to Costco or a similar store like them and the rep at the kiosk gave him the 2yr upgrade price and kept his unl data. I wish I could find it.

If I remember that thread he got it by transferring the upgrade from one line to his or something. I think that's what happened.
Right now I'm on the old Nationwide Family Talk & Text plan. We have 2 phones; 1400 min, unlimited data and text. My girlfriend and I don't even come close to 1400. I took a screenshot of my data usage and my gf's from the vzw app. I believe it shows that I used over 5gb for this billing period so far? Am I able to see last months total data usage online? My 3yr old uses my phone a lot so I'm worried about tier data plans. Oh and we pay about $175 a month for this plan for two phones which is insane
I think these are all of my options? Which do you feel is the best for me in the long run?
A. Pay full retail for two new phones and use the monthly payment plan so I can keep my unlimited data?
B. Switch to a data tier plan and drop unlimited so I can get the 2yr phone discount prices?
C. Wait until Dec when my contract is done and then switch to another carrier?
D. Try and find a use phone on Craigslist?
Right now I have a Rezound (used from Asurion) and my GF has a cracked DX2. Where looking at maybe the S4 or a 5s when it comes out. We always wanted to try iPhones.

Jump Question

Hello,
So, I bought the HTC One and paid the full price so I could unlock it and use it abroad. Now, if I join the Jump program, can I upgrade to a new phone without paying much?
Thanks,
Crazysah
Usually yes, I'd they are running a zero down promo it would just be taxes

So, if I just hand in my HTC One, I can get a new phone for free?
I don't know the specifics of the jump program so take this with a grain of salt but if you own your phone outright you should not need to turn it in to sign up or utilize jump. AFAIK jump is a monthly charge in addition to the monthly loan payment when financing a phone. If you turn in your phone they're going to give you a trade in value which might be far lower than if you sold it and signed up for jump and posted with the money you got for selling it.

Well, so my best bet is to sell my phone myself and then buy a new one from T-Mobile? No other option I have?
