Now that the Ultra LTE is finally available at the Sony Stores, there is only one question - should i get this or the Z1?
I cant decide. I really like this phone but the camera is sub par with no flash. The Z1 has a decent shooter, but the design is not so thin and the screen had some negative reviews. ohh and its 1.4" smaller
what do you guys say?
X1? Haha or you mean Z1

lol yes, i meant z1
It really depends..overall Z1 is a better phone than the Z ultra. (unless the screen is as bad as some reviewers are saying..the screen on the z ultra is amazing)
If you like big screens than obviously Z ultra
If you take a lot of photos than obviously Z1
That's pretty much the difference between the two.
I had this same dilemma and chose Z ultra simply because I wanted a big (the biggest) screen and although the camera is not that great, it's okay because i don't take photos anyway.

i guess thats the issue. although i dont take a lot of photos, but when i do, my cellphone is my main (and only) camera. lol
so i expect decent pictures. Ultra really fails at that, especially in low light

In decent lighting i think the z ultra is okay for the occasional shot. It's not THAT bad but yeah in low light it really suffers.
Same here, my phone is my only camera, but since I watch much more videos, play more games and browse the web far more often than i take photos, choosing the z utlra was a no brainer..
So I guess it depends on what you need most.
If only the z ultra had a good camera, it would be a perfect phone!

If the ultra had a good camera it would be as thick as a ****ty One Max and lose much of it's appeal.
I got both the Z1 and Z Ultra. If I had to chose I'd pick the ultra. It's just the best phone to work with in the whole world. Size is an issue but you can always manage somehow.

Yeah I agree one max is too thick. Stupid actually from HTC
Actually the Z ultra still fits in my jeans pocket so for me size is not so bad!

Z1 is the better all round phone in my opinion. Z Ultra has the better and bigger screen, but sacrifices the camera and is less portable due to the size.
All smartphone cameras are terrible anyways when compared to a DSLR.
For me its all about the screen. Its large enough so that it can replace your tablet and forms your primary reading/media consumption device as well as phone.
Z1 is just another phone with an overrated camera.
Both cameras will be fine for social media/happy snaps.
YMMV.
Yep I agree, if camera is ok enough for social media sites, I'm a-ok with that! Hence, I decided to get the XZU. I'd rather have a unique looking phablet (in terms of size) that I can browse, read, text, call and take pics with.
I was in the same boat last week. I went with ZU because the extra screen estate was on top of my list. You need to sort out your priorities as well. For me, ZU replaced a 5 inch phone and a 7 inch tablet all together. So it was a no-brainer. I also considered z1 for its camera. Like someone else said, ZU camera is not bad at all and I never used flash to take low light pictures (it freaks people out and these cheap $1 flash on smartphones basically ruin lowlight pictures). To sum it up
For big screen, sleek profile, excellent display, tablet usage, decent camera - go for ZU. Get the Sony CP12 3000 mAh power cover and double up on battery life.
For compact size, excellent camera - go for z1.
Performance of both are pretty much the same.
So an update for the OP I looked at the Z1 in store and reviewer's were right. The Z1's screen is washed out when compared to the Z ultra's and the viewing angles are comparable to the original Z
Sent from my C6802 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
yeah i noticed the same.
I called all the sony stores in Toronto and NONE of them had the unlocked ZU in stock. Apparently they don't have stock :S
I may just order online from the sony store. Its weird how they have NO cases on the sony store website for the phone either.
all the cameras on cell phones to me are the same with the exception of the nokia lumia and HTC one because the yhave optical image stabilization. A sony store employee told me last week when choosing the Z1 or ZU that they don't have OIS because they sell the QX100 and QX 10.
Funny, probally everybody went trough this process. I also hesitated when I heard of the camera.
But this screen is awesome, its like having a new high end lcd tv. But the in your hand.
The device is very thin, it gives it a very sophisticated look. Because its so thin i've the feeling it makes the phone look smaller then it actually is. And as mentioned before in daylight pictures are ok. Pictures outside are just the same as any other phone. Actually a photo outside and subject closeby it makes very decent photos.
When people see me with the phone, they first make a joke or something. When i turn the screen on, they're openly asking themselves if they also should buy and then where they should put it
Let me tell u something in terms of picture quality. It os beaten by even the ipad and ipad mini. Video recording. Quality is pretty good. But this is the worst.shooter.

Not a pro when taking photos. I take photos too but not too often, sometimes at daytime and seldom in the night. actually it's terrible at night. however, as i mentioned, I'm not a pro but for normal use, under normal, ISO and other adjustments would be better than auto. Just give a shot bro.
And for z1, i think camera is the only advantage.
Zu, fails for camera, but wins for all.
Cuz i like bigger screen and thinner body more than a camera which i could buy a real camera in the future.

Hey guys,
So I have been playing around with the camera on my Z Ultra and I wanted to share a few things with you.
1. DO NOT use Superior Auto at all!!
It destroys pretty much every photo and has too much noise and no sharpness. It's just shockingly bad.
2. Always use normal shooting mode.
3. Become comfortable adjusting settings and actually getting to know the camera so you know when to use appropriate ISO etc.
4. Adjust ISO yourself and keep it at 400 or below. Use in combination with HDR for some very pleasing results.
Those are the 4 most important tips I think. Never ever ever use superior auto. The results with normal mode are very crisp and have lots of sharpness and contrast.
Overall the camera I believe is better than the Xperia Z. I own both and with the right settings, the Z Ultras images appear sharper.
I'll post a few examples.
Thanks and how are you all liking the camera so far?
Sent from my Sony Xperia Z Ultra
Here are a few examples.
1 taking with Superior Auto. The other taking with Normal mode on ISO 100.
Be sure to zoom.in on the bottle. You can see so much noise on the photo taking with Superior Auto.
Hopefully the results speak for themselves
If you want other photos I'll be happy to provide them.

Way to much red in the photos taken with Superior Auto. Hopefully Sony will fix this in the next update. Btw, do you have the old Sony UI or the new one? (Old has a dark settings menu, while the new one is white)
I have the Old UI with the Bravia Engine 2.
New UI should be released in about a months time. Hopefully sooner
When are you buying your Ultra?

I'm buying it as soon as it hits the stores in Norway, which i believe is in the first week of september(?), like the rest of Europe.
Unless a different beast emerges from the depths of hell somewhere, that is (which i highly doubt, so ZU it is.)
Is it not the last week of September it gets released in Europe?
Its funny right now, I am slowly becoming to accept the Z Ultras size as normal and the 6.4" display as normal.
Even when I pick up a 5" device now, it feels so tiny!! Haha
Sent from my Sony Xperia Z Ultra
According to news sources, the release date for europe is september 6th.
I had the same experience when i got my Note. I came from the Desire HD with a 4.3" display, so the Note's size was ridiculous at that time, and i remember laughing my ass of when i unboxed it! Now? Not big at all. It's the same thing with the iPhone. I had the first gen. from the states and a 3GS, and they were really big at the time, but i just laugh at its tiny body now
When do you think phones will stop growing? I imagine 7" with almost no bezels at all will be the limit.
Unboxing my Ultra though, I did laugh when I seen it and my first day carrying it to work etc, quite a surprise haha.
Me personally I love big phones though, can never understand people who say they don't want anything bigger than 4.5 - 4.7 inches.
Sent from my Sony Xperia Z Ultra
Good question, and i have no idea, but i think we are near the limit now. IF the OEM's are planning on something even bigger, then i guess they'll have to make them without any bezels. That would be awesome and i guess a little science fiction looking
Something like this:

I agree. I love big devices and my Xperia Z feels really tiny in comparison but one thing is for sure: I think the Ultra is the biggest size that a phablet can have and still being pocketable.
It fits my pockets but I notice that I can't carry a bigger device in them. The future development could be smaller bezels and therefore perhaps a 6,8 and perhaps even a 7 inch screen. I would even guess that the small tablets like the Nexus 7 will be replaced by phablets with the same screen size but smaller body (Ultra size).
So the future market will offer phablets up to 7 inch, then tablets starting at 8 inches and upwards followed by dockable "tablets" with screens of 12 inches and bigger. The small tablet is going to become a phablet - adding smaller bezels and a smaller body to the existing 7 inch screen and putting a dialer on is a straight forward development, especially when the Nexus 7 has connectivity to mobile networks already and the old Galaxy Tab could make calls.
I wouldn't be surprised if the 2014 edition of the Nexus 7 will be a phablet and that Sony are creating a partly new market with the Z Ultra.
Coming from iPhone 5, the UZ produces astoundingly bad overprocessed images. What's coming off the sensor is actually pretty good as you can see if you shoot in burst mode since that is the only setting that doesn't add a massive sharpness filter to the output. All other modes are crap. Massive over sharpening and then saving at what has to be 50% jpg quality. I don't get the mentality of putting in user defined ISO settings but forcing sharpening and jpg quality.

I do not have these issues. The only problems i have is when the phone is using Superior Auto.
Any other mode is perfectly sharp and noise free. I have also compared it to my iPhone 5 and the photos are very very comparable when you get the settings right.

1. Always set the camera to Normal mode.
2. Set the ISO at a maximum of 400 and not higher.
3. Use HDR on occasions where it might be needed.
On those settings you will get sharp images. Of course, you have to learn the camera a little yourself too.

Any ultra owners wished they went for the Z1 or are you happy with the ultra?
Happy with XZ ultra, I like the screen size good for gaming and watching movies on the go and having a phone at the same time.

I don't know much about the Z1 (i havent bothered researching about it).. all i noticed is that it has a higher res camera and the rest is pretty much the same in the real wolrd...
I don't care much about a camera that is greater than 8mp.. and i am more inclined to a big screen phablet..
So XZU it is.. i'm just saving up on some cash right now to buy the LTE version.. hopefully I can complete it before end of month..
Typed along the gumline
The Z1 is as you mentioned above like a ZU in a smaller package, and the camera? Im not impressed at all..buy a camerahouse and some lenses if you do photography. And ZU costs only 75 cents more than the Z1..that's a hell of a lot more screen for that price!
I'm very happy with giant screen of ZU. I don't that I'll buy another device with smaller screen.
Better camera is a good plus but does not worth to change ZU.
I also love this very thin design.

I have been a Z Ultra owner for 5 weeks and i also own an Xperia Z and a Nexus 7 2012 edition.
i would buy the Z Ultra, hands down no question. Why?
First of all, my Xperia Z and its 5 inch screen feels too small now, like tiny!! Crazy right, its 5 inches! haha.
On top of this, the Z Ultra is super fast and lag free, it makes my Nexus 7 feel like a huge step back when i use it.
Basically it combines all the best things from a tablet and a phone and puts them in to one amazing package. So yeah, buy the Ultra and do not look back, you will not regret it
1 last thing, it would appear from what i have seen that the Z1 has a worse screen than the Z Ultra. Looks to wash out more easily similar to the original Xperia Z.

Didn't realise the Z1s screen was worse than the Ultras. If thats the case it is an ultra for me. I don't care about the camera function on a phone.
Do you guys feel odd when you answer a call from the Ultra? This is my biggest concern although I will definitely buy the SBH52 when released to go with the ultra.

Eventually no, just put the phone on the side of your face and forget that it's bigger than average. It's nowhere as silly as sidetalking on nokia ngage (hmm old times).
Already have the SBH50 (preorder bonus) and it is nice to have, though putting my xzu inside a bag with only the bluetooth headset readily available is a very rare scenario for me. I keep my zu in pocket all the time.. Now I'm thinking whether its worth it to upgrade to SBH52...

Personally, im leaning towards the z1.
Mainly due to the camera flash, as is really quite important to me.
The speaker is quite impotent to me to, so I'm hoping the z1 is better than zu.
I am still waiting to see the z1 zu and GN3 for myself in the shop before making any decisions.
Zu all the way. Nothing can beat the screen and yeah a 5inch screen is just way too small

Hey guys, I have a Z Ultra and a Z1 (my dad's). He's letting me keep his Z1 in exchange for my Ultra. But I like my Ultra's screen but the Z1 has a better camera
Here are the pros of the devices as I see them:
Z Ultra -
1. Bigger screen
2. Can use a pencil
3. I've grown to like it :silly:
Z1:
1. Better ROMs (or at least, more)
2. Good camera
3. Bigger speakers
4. Smaller overall size
Now, the screen size of the Z1 is really small, I mean, it's tiny ! But it's got a better camera and 2 months of college have taught me how important a camera is . Add to that the fact that it has a better contrast ratio than the Z Ultra and I've got a sound conundrum on my hands...
Do any of you have any advice ?

Okay, WAREFAREONLY (LOL), I would pick the Ultra. The screen is huge and has way better viewing angles than the Z1 (Ultra uses an AH-IPS LCD while the Z1 uses a VA LCD) and therefore it's easier to use (browsing, gaming etc.), its design is much better than the Z1 (subjective) and it's so freaking thin. We got ROMs and the Z1 and Ultra share the same internals, so cross development is expected down the road, so it's all good in that department. The only negative aspects of it is the camera.
Z1: Chubby with a nice camera
Ultra: Anorexic with a bad camera

Personally, this is how I see it from the XZU point of view.
1. Camera isn't an issue. For perfectly good quality pictures, use a decent third party app. OK, no flash is an issue if night pictures are required. Personally I've never seen the appeal of phone cameras... I'd always use an slr.
2. Yes, the z1 has more developers, but I guarantee we'll be getting those roms as pretty much direct ports.
3. Speakers on a phone have never been intended as anything other than for notifications. Headphones will always be needed for actual media unless you're a bit weird.
4. If you got the XZU, there's something in you that loves this screen. I've looked at all the other 5.8 inch and lower screens and they are far too small. This is a true phablet and makes media stand out by a mile. You won't get that many other places. Thats all this phone is really about.
Stick with XZU. No comparison.

Well.. you are only going to get a bias opinion from us. We are ultra owners.. so we obviously want the big screen.
I moved from the Galaxy S4 to the Ultra. Purely for the screen size.
I still had my S4 a few days ago, until i sold it. I picked it up to take some better images, but didn't want to use it. It has a better camera (like the Z1) but its just too small. In fact its bordering on ugly!
The Z1 is similar, but just to fat. Like Lord says.. I can't go to a fatter device, or a smaller device... The Ultra is for me! and I would think you would hate moving to a smaller device also.
Additionally @SpyderTracks makes a good point. I've made 3 posts in the app section regarding mods that were originated on the Z1, and will work for the ultra. So expect what ever happens with the Z1 to happen to the ultra.
Well, you decide whats better for you, but there are some facts and imprecision to revaluate in your points:
Z1 has not a better Rom, they have just updates at different stage.
Z1 has not a "tiny" screen, is a top huge smartphone sized for its class.
Ultra is +- 6mm thick
Z1 has not a better screen than Ultra
Ultra is more suitable for book reading too
Z1 has a better camera but now there is the option QX10 around: Ultra + QX10 = better camera than Z1, of course..for who dont care carrying much sized stuff outside.

Same family so share! Solved.:highfive:
Hello,
I'm currently an owner of an S3 . I've been wanting to upgrade for some time now and I just can't decide what to buy.
I love the M8, but the camera is so awful that I am just not ready to pay a flagship-phone price for a phone like that. (my old s3 beats m8's camera (!!) )
I loved the G3 too , but reading in the GSMaren's review how bad its battery is (aside from 3G talk time , it really isn't that different than my ancient S3 in terms of its battery life which is just ridiculous! )
The Z2 has a boring and an outdated UI which is just a shame for a 2014 phone.
But , its battery ,camera, overall performance are superb. At least compared to its rivals. (Though it seems that the screen is rather dim and dark compared to the S5 and M8).
But my main concern , is that Video shooting and overheating issue.
I don't need to record videos in 4K. But as far as I understand the the overheating issue occurs even when shooting an 1080p video, and that's a problem.
Does 1080p shooting cause the overheating and camera app shut down for everyone?
If you really think the UI is "boring and outdated" (really?!) it is easily remedied with any launcher of your choice..
Regarding the overheating issue, I have been recording 12 minute 4K videos (it shut down by itself) and 30 minute 1080p videos (I stopped recording, I could have gone longer the phone was warm but not hot at that point) without any issues.
That being said, based on what everyone on here has been saying my experience is not the same as most.
At the end of the day mate, it's a mobile phone. You don't have much to lose picking this over one of the other flagships.
Have you seen the phone in person and used it? I read a lot of reviews complaining about the brightness but when I got it I was quite surprised I could use it in daylight with no issues. As for the UI you can alway use a launcher or themer to change the look of the phone, as for the 4K video recording it seems to be an issue across all companies I think it's probably being an issue of the hardware not being at that level yet. I am hoping that there will be a software fix for the overheating issues. I'm not sure if you are in the US but there are sellers who are Amazon verified once in a while that will let you do no hassle returns if you dont like it. I was really impressed with the phone but ended up returning it because it was a bit too big for my tastes but I am planning on buying it again when the prices go down. Good Luck!

I would have to disagree with you here. The Z2 has a beautiful elegant UI IMO, one of the best Android "skins" aside from stock Android on the flagship devices. I've owned the One M8, Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 3, and this is my favorite device by far.
I had...well,still have a z2 (its in for repair, after three days of light use the back panel cracked).
I did want to like it, but a few things missing from it that I missed from previously having Samsungs. Yes the ui is cleaner, closer to stock android but the the features of Touchwiz for me, make android better.
Like the swipe left to call/right to text.... Vibrate when there is an unread text, scheduled text messages, block numbers etc.
Ok, apps can be installed to mimic most of these but arnt as fluid as the built in features of Touchwiz.
Also had issues with the volume of notifications and screen brightness in the sun.
Great looking phone tbh, but have a play properly with a demo unit before committing.

Haha I have an iPad already (don't judge!) like having a different eco system...We'll see hopefully I can hold out of the Z3 or Sony releases something similar in the 4.7 - 5 range.
As of now the Z2 is the best phone I've used compared to the S5 and the HTC One M8 but everyone has different preferences and tastes
I wrote a FULL REVIEW of the Xperia Z2 here - http://bit.ly/1kPjBJP

Ambient temp is around 30-40C (Sometimes more). Summers are hot here.
And I still can't understand.. the overheating issue occurs in 1080p videos too?? Or just for some..?
If it's only with 4K I can live with that, but 1080p... sucks.
It's weird that no serious mobile reviews mention that.(Engadget,GSMarena,etc.)

Any Middle east user out there? How is the heat problem with z2 as ambient is around 45+ C

I'm reading answers here and it's very annoying to see some of them...
Most of us choose one brand and stick to it, why?
Just because we found something on that brand that cannot be found on others.
To compare touchwiz and Sony UI is... Hmm...let's say odd..
Why to compare?
I like Sony UI and I'm using Xperia devices, for years.
I don't like touchwiz so I don't use it.
Sony UI isn't outdated, dev brought UI on XS and older devices back in 2012/2013 but it wasn't meant to be for those devices.
Sony UI (new UI) was built for Honami, for Z1 and that's not old guys...
I thought I won't buy Z2, I own Z1 and Z2 now and I can't tell which one is Z2 from distance...so, yeah, there's not much new when you look device while it's off.
But...
When you take Z2 in your hands, when you feel it, when you see that fantastic IPS screen - you'll see the difference.
While I'm talking about screen I'll say just a few things about heating, not overheating.
If you watch 4K video or shoot one, play heavy games - it'll be hot, quite hot but there'll be no apps crashing or device freezing - that's the difference between heating and overheating.
That's perfectly normal and I'm sure next update will reduce that a bit...
Also, screen is a bit dark and you'll have trouble to watch video outside on bright sun.
You won't see problems in menus and other apps but video is hard to watch...
That's minus, at least for me...
But that's something next firmware releases could fix without any problems.
Even custom kernels could fix something like that...
If you can wait, wait for next Xperia device, it'll be better, that's for sure.
But comparing this device with Z/ZL/ZR/Z1 I can say this is not just a better device, Z2 is something new from Sony...
Believe me, I'm using Z1 at the same time and comparing them all the time - Z2 is really, really something else...
Is it better then competitions flagships?
For me it is but if you like Sony and their ideas it'll be best for you as well...

Wait for a new update and we'll confirm if that heating is fixed.
55 has that problem and I think next one has it to (I think it's 402 or 420, I'm not sure) so next firmware update could fix that problem.
Wait for that and you'll know...
BTW, I just tried to shoot 1080 / 60fps video.
I recorded 3.20mins and played it, so it's almost 7 mins of 1080p videos and no heating at all.
Device is just a bit warmer (top back) but that's nothing.
It's not hot at all....

A suggestion. If you have the Z1 compact as your mobile phone and desire on times a larger viewing area I would skip the Z2 and go for the Xperia Z Ultra. Prices are incredibly low now and its one hell of a viewing experience. I own the Ultra and Z2 and think the Ultra is certainly better quality in terms of materials used and construction methods. Nothing wrong with the Z2 but I was some what surprised when I received it last week. I used to own the Xperia Z and that was, despite many negative comments, a very good phone. I am unsure if the jump in size from the compact to the Z2 would be worth the financial outlay. Now the Ultra has a far greater viewing area and its less than half the price of the new Z2.
Again, just some food for thought. Your choice will be right for you I am sure of that. Good luck with what ever you purchase.
Ryland
Why I like the Xperia Z2 over other competitors (Galaxy S5, One M8, G3). Below are just my personal opinion and observations. I have used my Z2 for 3 weeks now. This is my first noob review so please bear with me.
Camera
I was disappointed when I first heard that Sony limited its Superior Auto mode to 8MP only, I admit Im one of the people who believes more megapixel the better, but I was wrong. Even at 8MP, Z2 captures amazing shots, HDR is not as great as Galaxy S5s HDR shots, but as a whole camera, its better. Color accuracy is near perfect as I have compared through reviews. 4K video, although it heats up the phone quickly, I dont often use them. 1080p video recording is great, with a choice of 30fps or 60fps, sound is loud. Shots are fast and focus is 90% hit. Dont mind about HTC One M8's "Ultrapixel", they shoot awful shots.
Battery
3200mah Z2 vs 3200mah G3? G3 with QHD screen undoubtly will eat up more battery that Z2's FHD screen. Galaxy S5's 2800mAh and HTC One 2600 will normally never last longer than Z2. Rocking the phone for 24 hrs is a piece of cake. Dont forget Sony's Stamina mode that saves up a significant amount of juice.
Screen display
Although many people have been complaining about Z2's screen a bit dim. In my opinion its not too dim or too bright that I have to squint to see what im looking at. In my observation, Z2's brightness bursts from 75% and above. Previous flagships use TFT LCD and that was a big deal breaker for me. I could have got the Z1 if the screen was IPS. Texts and icons are sharper and brighter. Images are more vivid and accurate. Coming from Galaxy S4, I am used to those AMOLED displays, downside is that its not as sharp as IPS LCD, plus X-Reality does the job well done to movies and pictures (sharper and more vivid). As for HTC One M8, screen is comparable to IPS, but gives a bluish tint as I have read. Imagine yellows with blueish/colder colors.
Stereo Speakers/Sound
HTC is undoubtly the champ. But we are pinning Z2's dual front facing stereo speakers at 2nd, ahead of Galaxy S5 or G3 with one speaker. Sound is a bit soft/low even at 50%. You wont even notice a significant change from 1%-50% volume. Volume bursts from 50% and above. Thats just my opinion. Theres a little bit of trick with Z2's speakers to sound great or at least better. Watching movies or listening to music in landscape greatly improves the audio experience. Its probably because sound is distributed well to your left and right ear.
Noise-cancelling headphones
Its my first ever high-end earphones ever had. I was amazed how it cancels out 98% of background noise. And its 0 outside noise when im playing music. I couldnt even hear my friend shout at me. Bass is good, im not a boomboom person but I think its better than my GS4 generic headphones, or my Sony MDR ZX100. Definitely a steal.
Design/Build Quality
Coming from GS4, im loving my premium Z2. The glass and metal finish it has over Samsung's plastic, and horrible GS5 design, GS3 was good though. M8s design is good too, but that camera and battery . G3 is a bit big for me, and the back buttons are something that needs to get used to. Although heavy (Z2), Im getting used to it. Im using Spigen Ultra Fit case for increased grip and protection. I believe its a must for cases because the sides of the Z2 is kinda slippery. And I dont wanna scratch the back glass, lol.
User Interface and features
I find Z2 a wee bit lacking of features, like Touchwiz S-Beam. Palm tap to mute, especially calls and alarm and Smart Stay. Nevermind smart scroll and Air view stuff, they are hardly useful. The Sony UI feels light, not much bloated than Samsung. And it doesnt lag!! Unlike Samsung. Generally speaking. The UI is simple and snappy, though personally I feel its getting old/outdated. Needs to freshen up the icons and apps. With the new Quick Settings tab under notification, its a big improvement from older android versions with only limited and un-editable quick settings
Conclusion:
Coming from Galaxy S4, I am not disappointed that I ditched GS4 for Xperia Z2. With the screen improved from TFT LCD to IPS LCD, with 2 front facing stereo speakers, with the much improved camera than the previous Z1, the premium noise cancelling earphones, a premium phone made with glass and aluminum, water-proof, and ofcourse the massive 3200mAh battery. You cant go wrong buying the Xperia Z2.
Upon writing this lousy review back from a fresh shower, I just dropped my Z2 (with case ofcourse, 2nd time) from shoulder height to the floor tiles, and survived. Not a single scratch or crack.
I came from the SIII and certainly don't regret it. My main concern was the size. Whilst I have got used to it, it definitely is not pocket sized. In fact, ignoring weight and thickness it is the same size as my first ever mobile, the Ericsson Hotline EH97! Ok, the screen is a bit larger
On the plus side, the biggest improvement is the battery. I always struggled to get one day out of the SIII but get a day and a half comfortably now.

How long do you want to shoot 1080p ? Also if you don't use stabilisation then it will last longer. But this may not always be an option you want.
Not a problem for those that shoot at half the temperature.
The thread on undervolting looks promising. There apparently is a difference with .420, maybe they will lower it further in future updates.

Sounds like a fair way to draw a distinction
People tend to use it in a relative way though, this other device does not get so hot so Z2 gets hotter than them therefore it overheats.
I was looking into the Xperia Z line because of the IP rating and the awesome battery life.
I hate Samsung and Apple so those phones aren't even going to be on my list of options.
I currently have a HTC One m7ul. I was going to buy a Z3 on Amazon and it goes for around ~$630+ while the Z2 is a more friendly $450+.
They both seem to have very similar specs just with some minor changes. I plan on rooting and flashing to most recent version of Sony's software.
1) Is there really much of a difference between the IP58 (Z2) and IP68 (Z3)? I know what they mean and the numbering system, just don't know if it really will make a difference for me...
2) Is paying ~$150 for the Z3 worth it over the Z2? (To me it doesn't seem so, but if anyone has more insight into this)
3) Does the Z2 have double tap to wake (yes, i know this is very minor, but i love this feature)?
Thanks!
1.IP68
6 is for dust and 8 is for water
Z3 has better dust resistance
Z2 is IP58, less dust resistancy and same water resistancy
2. Z2 will be recieving shortly almost all Z3 features, only difference is design, display and camera
More better camera, higher iso range, 12800 vs Z2 3200
Display, identicle but slightly brighter backlight
3. Z2 has double tap to wake

You're wrong on the camera side Bro! It's iso 12800 vs 6400. Also those high iso values are only available in auto mode and since that's the worst shooting mode on Sony smartphones, I'd say the 12800 thing is just a marketing gimmick. In manual mode both phones have a max iso option of 3200 and then only at 8mp. At full res, they both max out at 800 iso.
The z3 produces sharper photos at full res but as I understand it 4.4.2 has a focusing bug which Google fixed with 4.4.4. Sony obviously didn't compensate for this bug on their 4.4.2 firmware as others did. Also quite a few reviews have claimed the z2's camera to actually perform better especially in video recording. Z3 has a better mic though but the mic on the z2 is said to improve with 4.4.4.

In terms of ip rating, I doubt users will be able to tell the difference. The z2 survived 6 weeks in sea water. I think that should be fine for anyone lol
Is the z3 worth $150 more than z2? Emphatically NO! The most I'd pay extra for rounded sides and brighter display is maybe $40. That's being generous actually. I also prefer the colour calibration of z2's display. Much warmer than the colder z3.
The z2 has double tap to wake and will soon be on par softwarewise with the z3 once it gets the 4.4.4 update up to and including ps4 remote play.
My advice is wait for z4 in a few months but if you want to take the plunge now, go with z2. Z3 is over priced. It's in the same category of smartphone as z2,m8,s5 and g3 and it's price will drop in line with those soon enough.
Save yourself the $150. Spend it elsewhere. Why give it to Sony for rounded sides?

Not saying it's pointless. At this point with the z4 only months away, I'd recommend waiting to see that but if one had to make a choice now, I'd say go with z2. You'll get essentially the same package and user experience for a lot less.
Z and Z1 lack ips live colour led panels and don't have a lot of software features available on the newer models so unless you're after a bargain I wouldn't go with either of those.
I suppose my advice is, go with z2 now or wait for z4. Z3 is over priced!

I've heard that too but trust me if Sony's going to can any of its flagship releases, it'll be the September IFA releases and not the MWC release. There's no way they'll wait until September 2015 to launch a new flashship. They need to have something to go up against the likes of the S6,M9 and G4.
The z3 doesn't stand a chance against any of those. It's already lower specced than the note 4 and even nexus 6.

I would like to wait for the Z4, but isn't that going to end up being $700+ on launch?? I don't get phones on contract so that generally why i wanted to go with the Z2 in the first place, other than the fact that the Z3 isn't much of an upgrade over the Z2.
