[Q] US Firmware for Galaxy Mega GT-I9152 5.8 - Samsung Galaxy Mega

Hoping someone on here can help, I recently purchased the new Samsung Galaxy Mega GT-I9152 5.8. The problem is, I live in China, so it came pre-installed with the Chinese firmware which has a lot of restrictions on it. It has Android 4.2.2 Is there any way to get rid of the Chinese firmware and install the US firmware onto it?
And yes, I'm aware of all the fakes in China. But this was purchased from the Main China Mobile store.
Any help would be appreciated, I tried google search, but I couldn't seem to get the results I was looking for.

If it is not locked you can root it then use titanium backup to remove any app you dont need.

Well, I succesfully rooted it and was able to uninstall all of the bloatware.
A problem I'm still having however is that it still blocks paid apps, and play store. It has S Voice installed and it works great for basic commands. But for anything advanced, you have to speak to it in Chinese. I installed the English US version of S Voice, but since my phone has Chinese Firmware the program won't work.
My firmware/baseband version is I9152ZCUAMG3, if I were to flash a US firmware/baseband version, would it unlock/fix any problems.

Since you have rooted without any problems then it is not locked. Use odin to flash any firmware from sammombile or samsung-updates. You might lose root in the process but you can always root again.Good Luck!

I tried flashing the Taiwan firmware, but it did not change my firmware. I will type my steps out here, if I made a mistake please tell me .
1st, I rooted it using odin.
2nd, I verified the root with programs that require it.
3rd. Powered off, hit volume down, power button, and home button at the same time.
Opened odin, I put the firmware rom in the pda slot.
4th, hit start.
5th let it run after this it auto booted my phone, and said successful, but when I checked it out, it was still the same old version?
Am I missing a step?

After odin go to recovery and factory reset.

Just flash the SER version via Odin and your done. There is no US firmware for the GT I9152

China Retail XT910 Software

Just bough a china retail GSM RAZR MAXX XT910. Came with Gingebread, updated to ICS 4.0.4, however it was and still is full of useless Chinese apps some of which is can't uninstall. Biggest problem is that I can not get Google Play, no matter what I do, it gets installed but keeps crashing on launch.
I contacted Motorola UK support (I live in UK) and here is the replay I got: "We are sorry to inform you that if your phone is a Chinese unit, it can only load Chinese software and it is not possible to modify it. We would like to advise you against rooting your modifying your device since the warranty would be voided."
So since there is no official way to get UK stock ICS I decided to root and install custom ROM/stock UK ROM, but to no avail. The phone fails to root and I have tried many different softwares. I am about to try Matt's razr utility.
I'm not sure that it will work and if it does, what is the specific process here? What do I do after rooting the phone?
Has anyone else had similar problems? Found a way to successfully root their china retail?
Thanks
Don't try Matts Utility,It's for XT912 From Verizon if I'm not wrong.
It seems like you have upgraded to an ICS Leak and not the official ICS.
Official ICS includes gapps (Google Apps, and yes Google Play is among them, without gapps Google play wont run).
So you got 2 options from here on:
1.Install the original ICS from China (Fastboot file flashing)
2.Root your rom, install some custom recover (like BootMenu,Bootstrap or CWM),and flash gapps from there.
Edit:
Here are the Fastboot files:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1721771
Click the thanks button if i helped .
IS that possible? I upgraded from the settings, about phone, software update, so I thought it would be official. I'm going to try installing the fastboot files you linked, it doesn't require root, does it? If this doesn't work, i'll post.
Thanks

i'd say, stay with chinese ICS, it's great.
root it, install a custom recovery (bootmenu or CWM).
download GAPPS package here, and install it through custom recovery.
and you can use titanium backup to unistall unneeded chinese apps

I'm having problems rooting the phone, and the link above doesn't even open. Is it the 1.8 matt's razr utility?
How do install the GAPPS? Not sure what custom recovery means... I can get google play, install it right now it just crashes after launch. WIll it work if the phone is rooted?
Another question: How to check for root? I know this is a stupid question but I used eternity project rooting tool and it said the phone is rooted, but when I turn it off, go into fastboot, is says: Device is locked. Does it mean it's not rooted?
Thanks
I managed to flash the stock ICS and root, now I need to install custom recovery to install Gapps. This is where my problem is, no matter what I try (bootmenu, CWM, etc, the phone only boots into stock android recovery (<3e>). Any way around this?
If you are using bootmenu, just use its widget to reboot into custom recovery.

Can you link a download of the bootmenu apk? I can't get it from play store since it's not installed which is rather ironic because I need bootmenu to install it...
Ah, yeah...
Try ask Whirleyes in his bootmenu thread. I'm sure he'll help.
Ok, installed BootMenu apk, now trying to download BootMenu Package but it stops after about 60% with an corrupted file error...
What to do?
Ok, disregard the previous post, solved everything, got the Chinese ICS, installed GAPPS using bootmenu, works perfectly.
Thanks for the help

Unroot and Remove CWM (Australia)

Hi XDA,
I have been loving my S3 and a few weeks back unrooted it so i could have a little more freedom. I have CWM 5.5.0.4 on it.
I havn't added a new rom and I would keep it rooted but I want to recieve samsung updates because CWM won't install them.
I have looked around and havn't been able to find a way around to install these updates.
So i would like to unroot my device and remove CWM.
I can handle having to go back to stock and lose my data but I am unable to find a recovery file for my region.
I'm Australian and have been looking through the link below's tutorial on reverting back and there has been no real indication of a file for Aus/Oceania.
Any help would be great thank you.

Instead of using CWM to update your ROM, why not use Odin?
Also do a *#1234* to find out what PDA/Phone/CSC version you have.

It's the updates Samsung requests me to do so it asks me to restart my phone. It will then boot into the cwm that i am fairly sure was put there by odin and it wont certify the installation. I wouldnt know how to manually get the updates.
Thanks for the tip on finding out the version.

Samsung's Kies software will not connect to my phone

I get the following error message:
This device is not supported by Kies 2.0
Make sure that your device is supported and try again.
And this is using the latest version of Kies.
Any ideas on how to resolve this?
I remember it started to the proccess to root my phone, but then I wasn't very succesfull with it, so I abandoned it, but otherwise it should be stock firmware (its one of the first few steps on the xda guides).
TIA

Kies cannot root your phone .
Probable buggered firmware if you tried something and stopped .
Initial try is to backup data and factory reset phone .
Fails then flash your original firmware via Odin .
Alternative use XDA to update by flashing stock firmware .

Synch then with Google
Is that the only way? Because I don't want to do it that way.
Is there a way to check if my phone is rooted? Because I'm sure I didn't complete the process, but I just need to confirm that.
Also, I think I only got as far as trying the procedure for "triangle away", numerous times, but it didn't quite work for me, so I left it.
Is there a way to "untriangle away" after checking if it was done?
TIA
you can search 3rd party backup & restore application in playstore. you can try "my backup"

Hi, I went through the same problem and fixed it.
First uninstall Kies from your PC and make sure you doesn't leave behind any files.
Uninstallation of the software and the drivers installed by Kies I suggest using Revo uninstaller to do that.
Uninstall it from your PC then make a fresh installation.
Open Kies but do not connect your phone, if it wants to update Kies, go ahead and do it.
Close Kies, connect your phone and open Kies.
That should fix it.
It happened to me when I updated Kies while my phone was connected. Do try the steps above hopefully it should help. Kies is a crappy software to be honest. Samsung should really get their act up and code a better/stable program.
If that doesn't help, then probably something went wrong while rooting. The simplest and best option would be to flash the Stock rom back on your phone. That's very simple to do.
Follow this thread to get back to stock rom [http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=32980712&postcount=6]
PS: The stock rom link on this thread is linked to JB if I'm not wrong, I would suggest going on www.sammobile.com/firmware and downloading the correct stock rom for your phone.
Hope I helped

Also, since I'm using a phone with INU region, I can't upgrade it to 4.1.1
Someone else bought a phone, and I was working on it for them, and out of the box, it asked for firmware upgrade. Lucky guy!

There are apps on the play store which can check if your phone is rooted. Search for "check root".
The triangle away procedure is optional. You don't really have to do it.
It will just reset your counter so that it seems as if you didn't make any changes.
This is useful if you have to return the phone for warranty.
To backup your contacts I would also suggest to sync them with Google.
It's easier to manage your contacts via your web browser and you always have a backup.
You can also export those contacts from Google to other formats so you can import them later on other phones/programs.
Of course there are also other options... you could copy them to your SIM or use 3th party apps.
I would suggest G Cloud.
It is an app that will backup your Contacts, SMS Messages, Call logs, System settings, Pictures, ... and a lot more
You can choose what to backup. It'll back it up in the Cloud. You have 1GB free storage which is enough.
After a factory reset or installation of a new ROM you si;ply reinstall the software and restore your backup.
I only use it to backup my SMS messages. I like to keep them all.
Good luck

Even I'm on INU region. Are you from India? If so, you can't upgrade to 4.1.1 yet because Samsung hasn't updated the firmware for the region as of now. Jelly Bean is expected to arrive sometime around mid of November if not earlier. And the firmware upgrade out of the box isn't 4.1 update. Its a security patch recently released by Samsung.
I'm from India, but now I'm using this phone outside of India regulary.
I was thinking of using a SIM card from India, but I would have to cut it manually, and then also I wouldn't be sure if it was cut properly.
The firmware upgrade out of the box is for 4.0.4, which is still ICS.
Can I just change INU to another country, and then get the update? And then revert it back to INU when I need to send it in for warranty?
Also, it's surprising that Samsung hasn't released an update for INU, because I'm pretty sure it was one of the launch markets, as well as one of their biggest markets.

Yes, India is getting INU update 1st week of November or the 2nd. Samsung are market leaders here and JB updates have been confirmed.
There is a way to change from INU on your phone by changing your CSC ID. The CSC is location specific, so if you change your ID to some country where S3 has been given the JB update. You 'might' get it. Though I'm not sure of this method.
Instructions For Changing CSC:
Download Samsung Galaxy S / S2 CSC app from the Play Store
Open Samsung Galaxy S / S2 CSC app
Tap "Change CSC" button
Select the CSC for you Country
Tap "Install" button (Keep in mind changing CSC wipes your device)
I have never tried changing the CSC on my phone so I'm unsure of the credibility of the method above. Do take backup before changing it.
personally ive found kies is flawed and dont really like it

SGH-M819N (Metro PCS) Mega update via Kies

I'm seeing an available firmware upgrade via kies (MK7).
I'm a little skeptical to try it. Has anyone else upgraded to this firmware?
If so, have you been able to root your mega and install a custom recovery after the upgrade?
I don't want to install this firmware upgrade only to find out that afterwards that knox is on it and prevents me from rooting the phone or unlocking the bootloader.
By the way, I tried downloading the firmware without my phone connected but kies keeps force closing on me before the download is complete.
I'm afraid to connect my phone and try the download because I think it will automatically install the upgrade which I don't want to do until I'm sure I can re-root it and re-install TWRP.

I bit the bullet and gave it a shot. I am happy to report that the firmware upgrade was successful using Kies, I was able to root the device via the Kingo Root app, and was able to re-install TWRP. I am now on firmware M819NUVUAMK7. It is still Android version 4.2.2, and the baseband is also M819NUVUAMK7. The kernel version is dated Fri Nov 22, 2013
I installed superSU and when I ran it, it asked me if I wanted to disable knox (YES OR NO). OF COURSE I DISABLED KNOX!!
I afterward performed a nandroid backup in TWRP (the first order of business).
I am more comfortable now deleting, freezing, uninstalling system apps now because (in the event of a softbrick or bootloop) I can always revert to my nandroid backup or in extreme cases, restart all over again by re-installing the firmware via Kies, re-rooting the device via the kingo root app, and reinstalling TWRP via ODIN.
Not sure what changed from the original firmware (no change log). In any event, the device is snappy and I'm not experiencing any lags.

well easiest way is. if its your stock ROM that came with the phone when you bought it. it is odex.
if you are rooted, you can use root explorer to go into your system/app file and see if it shows odex settings for apps
I did and had no problem rooting with kingo. What I cannot find is a way around sim lock without going through metro and that sucks.

Almost had a heart attack from this upgrade. My phone was already rooted when I applied the update from Kies. Everything went through fine except when it restarted, I couldn't turn on Wifi at all and I was getting an E in the cell signal. I managed to download the TWRP tar file and Kingo app to root again. I was able to restore my previous backed up image and everything was when I last left it! WHEW!
That's strange. I had no problem. wifi worked and I haven't seen E at all (only 4g lte or 4g). My signal appears to be stronger and more stable with this update than with the original firmware (most of the time I have full bars). As mentioned I don't know what changes were made (no change log around) but this is my observation so far.

I have no lines displaying anything about KNOX.
In titanium backup I froze knox 1.0, knox notification manager 1.0, and knox store 1.0.
So it appears that knox is in the rom somewhere but it's had no impact on me. I'm rooted, have twrp installed and have flashed multiple custom roms on my device (both tw and aosp based roms).
Perfect, thanks! Glad you guys got spared from the horrid new Knox bootloaders. There's a small chance that the M819 can be downgraded to the older bootloader to remove Knox entirely, but if the update came with the newest bootloader (I got stuck with it on my i527M) there is no hope at all of downgrading.
Thanks to whoever posted this and the creator of this rom

I have a metro galaxy mega 6.3 (sgh m819n) successfully rooted with kingo. what im trying to find is how to put a custom recovery like twrp and how to do it like step by step. help would be greatly appreciated. or to point me in the right direction. thanks guys.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2608110 this is a great rom for our mega(metropcs) imho. now in order to install CWM or TWRP you simply need to download the version thats for meliusltexx which is for the i9205 version of the mega.. These Roms and procedures are compatable with the M819n(metropcs) mega
thanksss

How do i restore superuser and titanium backup ?

Hello ,
About a year ago i rooted my phone using kingroot , however i did not replace the kingroot su with super user app the reason for that was because i just wanted to delete some bloatware on my device and then would remove root again .
I proceeded with downloading Titanium Backup and deleted some of the bloatware among which i deleted the default email app from the phone . Not knowing how to properly remove root access from the phone i simply deleted kingroot believing that this would make me lose root access on the phone .
The problem now is that i need to restore the default email app which i previously deleted because an error message keeps popping up on my phone repeadetly ( Unfortunately , Email has stopped ) and it has gotten to the point where the phone is almost unusable . What i want to know is this :
1- Is it possible to install just the kingroot superuser or some other super user so i can use root to download titanium backup again ?
2- Will titanium backup be able to restore the default email app after i download it ?
Oh wow okay you have a few options. One is to use the SuperSUme app to replace kingroot super user with SuperSU. First, you can try downloading superSU from the play store and then titanium backup. I'm not sure if titanium backup will bring back your e-mail app or not. I guess it depends if you backed it up. When all else fails, you can use the flash fire app (given you have superSU) to flash the OF1_rooted_stock_ROM file. This will take you back to 100% stock with root. If that even fails your last option is to use ODIN on your PC to flash the stock ODIN firmware file for whatever firmware you are on. If you want to unroot, getting superSU is a must because it has an unroot option built in.
All of the files I mentioned are either found here in the forums and/or on the play store. Do note that if you're going to use flash fire, the only version you can use is version 0.53.
Lastly, I have written a guide here that may help you with rooting in the future. https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...h-i545-pl1-t3846576/post77710697#post77710697

Hello and thanks for the reply , I tried getting SuperSU but it doesn't show up on my play store .
Is it possible to use Odin to flash the stock 5.0.1 ROM for my phone without the superuser and will that reset the phone and return the e-mail app ?
Also assuming this way will work where can i get Odin ?
And also will this interfere with the carrier ? Since the phone is VZW but i am using it on another carrier not in USA currently , will that make the phone unusable with other carriers or its quite unlikely ?
Thanks in advance and sorry to bother you once again ,

You will need to get the superSU apk file off the web and install it from there then. You can flash the OF1_rooted_stock_ROM file with flash fire 0.53 and that will give you 100% stock with root. You can also flash the ODIN full stock .tar file found here in the forums and that will also get you back to 100% stock.
The Verizon galaxy s4 is carrier unlocked. To use data though you have to set the correct APN settings for the network you are using. I have AT&T and have used my SIM card in my Verizon galaxy s4 before.

Actually i flashed the official OF1 firmware with odin and it restored the default apps without any problems .
I don't know if this means the phone was unrooted before but several root checkers i tried said that the phone was rooted but the superuser app was missing .
Nevertheless , i thank you for helping me out it might seem little but its thanks to you that i turned to odin and now my phone is in a perfect condition
Yep as I said you can flash the ODIN tar file for OF1 and get back to 100% stock. Good thing that did it for you. As for superSU, you can get it off chain fire website I believe.
If you ODIN back to stock, it more than likely unrooted. Odd that root checker says you're rooted. No problem, glad to help whenever I can. Happy flashing!
