I can't find an exact answer tothis when searching, so i'll ask here. My mdk unlocked ran great until I dropped it and cracked the screen. My replacement is coming, i fear itll be an me7.but if I use safestrap after rooting, itshould be just like the old phone, right? From what i'm reading, ss doesn't slow the phone any. Any other disadvantages? Thanks.

Well you will only be able to use roms that use the stock kernel. So not every rom is available to you, but there are still enough.

Disadvantages are that you won't be able to use any non-stock kernel roms (like any AOSP roms) and you'll be very limited on storage space unless you're daring enough to flash over the stock rom slot (some people do this and there's no issues).

I do this and don't like the limits. I wish I could use CWM or TWRP but can't on ME7. So irritating. I do love the Safestrap recovery but I just wish ME7 wouldn't limit safestrap so much. It's such a great recovery software.

For the record I got it working. Had to max out partition sizes in rom slot but it installed. No perceptible slowdown I can see.

So had to turn my 32 gig S3 in on insurance. Assurion said they couldn't replace it, no 32 gig models in S3 available, so they bumped me up to a brand new S4 in 32 gigs.
Kudos to them, because they offered it, I didn't ask for it, but gladly accepted.

Don't take the update
Check your build number and see if you are on MDK or ME7. If you are on MDK DO NOT TAKE UPDATE TO ME7. MDK you are able to unlock bootloader and free your phone to flash roms etc.. ME7 only has root at this time and can not downgrade to MDK. If you are already on ME7 then there is a thread where Hashcode is working on safestrap but it is still a WIP.

I am charging the battery for first use, have not turned it on yet. Have no intentions of until I get a handle on everything. In the time since I posted i've been reading up on it, and have come to the conclusion already you have just warned me about.
As curious as I am to see what version of software it is running, I am also not informed enough (yet) to press that power button. I figure until I know what I want to do about handling the various choices that will either be presented to me, or are available to me (but may not know about unless I read first) that device is not doing anything more then charging its battery.
The one constant about an insurance replacement is you get to decide when it first powers on, not some store rep.
...and it looks like all my luck on this front was used up by having the 32 gig s4 offered to replace my 32 gig s3.

I am just thankful I basically got offered an upgrade without having to wait for or pay for one, still had 6 months before I came due for one on verizon.
The hardware is really what's important, it's not really feasable to upgrade the internal memory or add in ir blaster - software problems are literally just a matter of time. We'll get it eventually, the more people pitching in to help just moves the timeline more in our favor.

Did you read what I posted? MDK can be unlocked not ME7. Or sorry MDK you can use a unsecured Loki kernel. Still get custom recovery and flash Roms etc...
From what i've read so far - and bear with me as i've only just started looking into anything about the S4 within the last few hours - it would seem that Loki is a process whereby the bootloader isn't unlocked, as much as bypassed.
That is correct. The bootloader is not truly unlocked like a nexus. However the Loki does allow a custom recovery to flash Roms,kernels,radios, etc.. Unlike ME7.
I don't think any 32gb phones have mdk since it was released later. I could be wrong tho

i've had my s4 from them for around a month, replaced due to them also not having an s3 32gb, and it came with mdk installed. stupid me should've read you couldn't just odin mdk :crying:
So....
Do you know if your insurance is still for the S3? Lets say your phone breaks and you take it in again. Are they going to give you an S3 if they have it in stock or just another S4?
dunno what would happen automatically. i am operating without insurance on the s4. long and complicated story which i wish not to relate here. good point for anyone in a similar situation who kept their policy.

Im currently on ME7 / Safestrap on Bean's Build 7.
I know lots of folks are all over the board on ME7, MI1, and MJ7.
I know MJ7 isnt compatible with safestrap yet, so I dont think thats correct. Is the update to MI1 worth going through? IIRC its compatible with safestrap, what ROM is best for MI1? I've read that Eclipse is nice.
Also, I havent dabbled in kernels with this phone yet. Is there a way to to kernels in SS?

My advice is to stay on me7 a little while longer. Right now all the roms for touch wiz are built on it. I believe you can flash the different radios in safestrap but read that thread to be sure. The links for the radios are in general.

Well the baseband is different from the bootloader. Baseband is just the radio. As to one being more likely to be unlocked? I suspect if the crack one the same exploit will work on the others. But maybe not.

I've been away a while. If I'm understanding correctly I can one click route my MK2 and install Samsung based ROMs without a custom recovery using mobile Odin. Can anyone please confirm it or correct me? If I'm right can you give me ideas what to look for in a ROM that will work with this method. Thanks and sorry if this has been asked. I did search but there wasn't much to look at in terms of direct solutions.

Personally, I've never heard of what you're describing. The only way I know of with MK2 is to root using this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758.
After that, your only option for roms is Safestrap. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2441441. You will only be able to install TouchWiz 4.3 based roms. Make sure they're compatible with Safestrap before you install.

This is the Verizon forum, not at&t. However I believe mobile odin is only useful for restoring the phone to a factory state without a computer, not flashing roms, yet you must be rooted. I could be wrong though.

Well as far as I know Odin is just for flashing the firmwares and a custom recovery is for flashing ROMs. Maybe there is an exception, but I don't think so

Ok looking like I misunderstood then. Thanks for the clarification. I don't think I trust the idea of the safestrap. I know it's safer, but I have been flashing ROMs for years and the recovery method makes me warm and tingly. I don't think they'll ever crack into the ability to flash the way we're all used to. For every genius we have that's capable of figuring it out, Samsung has 10 that can stop it. I pray they get it, but my hopes are fading.

safestrap has been around for years for other phones and recently hashcode ported to the S4 last fall. I have used it since that time with zero issues and have been running several ROMs at a time to evaluate, with again no issues with safestrap. Not sure why you wouldn't "trust it".....as it gives all us non-MDK owners ability to run something else than just stock.

Exactly, I've been hammering away on Safestrap since my RAZR and it's really safe just like the name implies. Granted I could flash AOSP on the razr, but my guess is at some point kexec will come around for the S4 as well. Too many really smart people working on that project for it to fail in my opinion.
Anyways.... For now Safestrap is awesome, and happy to have it.

slowly getting there. Takes some time and while many SS roms are available they all come up short to my main day to day HD12 Rom....battery life is simply amazing

So I've searched the ROM's thread, the safestrap thread, and the general forums. Like I said, I've seen multiple people ask about it, but no one has replied. While I appreciate expecting people to have done a forum search, I have done this. I know safestrap is a little bit different than a S4 MDK bootloader.
What I have seen is replies from people who have done the upgrade from scratch and clearing their ROM slots first. I'm sure this works fine. I'm asking about something a bit different.

The rom itself is very smooth no issues for me at all... I installed to a previously used slot via sstrap3.71 after clearing data cache etc. Are you wanting to know if you can lack of better terms dirty flash personally I just back up, wipe then istall.
My question is, I guess, if you can do the OTA upgrade in one step? Is that just a download of the ROM then u need to flash it yourself? Or does it simply upgrade to RLS13 and keep your data and work smoothly with that method. Most people it seems do a clean ROM install for the upgrade as opposed to OTA.

I myself usually just download the file then do a clean install. Just seems to go better for me that way. Up to you though

to me, this is the only way ever to install any ROM. Download to computer, verify MD5 of the DL and copy over to extsd card. Reduces the risk of a bad install........just saying, there are reasons some of us NEVER have an installation issue on any ROM

The stock kernel doesn't allow it. You can only use the stock kernel with Safestrap. So, no over/under clocking.

I believe those settings only work for a phone with an unlocked bootloader. Those are settings best left alone unless you know what you're doing.
You can mess with some settings on the stock kernel but you shouldn't, Samsung uses a special hotplugging governor dependent on a lot more factors then your usual custom kernel, so unless you really know kernels inside and out then you'll only hinder your kernel. The app will also show you that you changed settings in the stock kernel that really can't be changed.

It's been my experience that any developer worth his salt is using a kernel as customized for his ROM as he can make it. He might not get it exactly right the first time or two out the door, but he will get it right.

There's a few AOSP developers who build ROMs and kernels but developers usually only work on one disclipine.

I guess I could have been a bit clearer. The developers I've followed over the years will work with the kernel guys to get one tweaked for their ROM. snuzzo over with Rezounds seemed to be a master chef of kernels.

Well, in one sense, that's true. You can flash a custom kernel on a MK2/MJ7 phone. When the flash completes, you've bricked your phone and set the warranty void flag. But it did flash, right?

When I get a new phone.. I hop on XDA and read read read then I download the factory images I WOULD need in case I need Odin to rescue me. Just seems like people don't ever get prepared in case something goes wrong. I suppose though people learn from mistakes... I sure have

I got my phone on Verizon's Edge program. I can get a new phone every six months. I needed to be sure that I could get this thing back to stock before I rooted. I've been reading these threads since I got the phone in September... in fact, I read these threads plus those for the phones I was considering.

Good deal! I know there's a lot to look through on here and a lot to learn. Luckily there are stickies made that answer pretty much all those kind of questions. You'll be good.. You can always use Odin and get it back to complete stock.

Once I knew that... and they were able to root the Jelly Bean updates... I jumped in and did the deed myself.
Maybe if they were to sticky a "what you need to know, read this first" thread at the very top of each of the forums, it might cut down on the redundant questions.
