I'm planning to buy a used SIII through a local website that offers a space for people to display ads for their phones (something like Swappa), but the problem is that I have seen many fake products which looked exactly the same and even have TouchWiz on JB. What's more confusing is that most of these products have a printed valid IMEI number.
I though I might compare the valid printed IMEI with the one I get when dialing *#06#, but I'm not sure if that number can be faked as well.
Any advice on what to look for when examining a used SIII?
PS: I will have physical access to the phone before buying.

Well can you touch the phone ? I mean dose the seller give it in your hands to play around with it ?. If so I think you could just download Antutu and see the specs and everything there.

Antutu benchmarks does not show whether it is real or not. Benchmarks are not accurate. To OP: If u can use the phone, go to download mode thru Volume down+Home+Power button and check the model name.

I think Denzof intended to point out to check the real hw specs like the presence of a quad core 1.4 CPU, and 1 g of ram etc as most of the fake S3's, in best cases, have max of a dual core cpu and 512 mb ram or may be less.

Don't you think that the "download mode" can be emulated as well with the same model number as the original?

Hi Folks,
I have recently come accros this phone model on aliexpress.
Unlike Lenovo p780 on this forum, it has 4.7" screen and quad or octa core MTK CPU, either MTK6589 or MTK6592.
Is this the official Lenovo phone or some "dodgy" copy, as in Antutu, it shows manufacturer as "ALPS"? Can somebody shed some more light please?
Regards and Thanks,
Darko

Thanks for your answer.... I have looked there first, however, I could not find it.
p780s is smaller, has KitKat, according to advert.

Seems to me after a long study that this p780 is for internal market of China.
I don saw anything on international sites.
And by the way this phone got an accumulator of 2200mA or 2500mA.
There are screenshots on Aliexpress offers, that confirms the specification (chip, 2GB RAM, gpu, etc). If the phone is actually a dodgy copy it means that these screenshots are fake as well?

I just had a search on youtube and a those few reviews have disappeared. If I find them again I shall post them for sure.
Thanks for revealing this "mistery". Can you explain me how they can hide the "real CPU" from different benchmark applications?
An easy way to discover they used a fake antutu.

From what I have discovered , when installing a benchmarking application they have modified Package Access Helper com.android.defcontainer to replace the apk with modified one from /system/etc/.tempxxx with fake cpu information.
From Logcat
12:33:59.733 Warning asset 2578 AssetManager-->addDefaultAssets CIP path not exsit!
12:33:59.733 Warning asset 2578 Asset path /system/etc/.tempcpuz is neither a directory nor file (type=1).
12:33:59.733 Warning DefContainer 2578 Failed to parse package
12:33:59.733 Warning ActivityManager 549 No content provider found for permission revoke: file:///system/etc/.tempcpuz
With root I have disabled these files , and was able to install the real apk by copying it to /data/app
Without root you have to decompile and recompile apk with another package name ( eg. from com.cpuid.cpu_z to com.cpuid.cpu_z2)
I attach renamed cpuz if anyone wants it.
When the internal package name is changed , It can be installed as it doesnt identify it as one that it wants to replace.
If any developers want these files for investigation , I will upload them.
I hope this info helps others not to get ripped off from those suppliers selling these phones.
I believe that we need to find some place to put this as a warning for people looking to buy phones like this.
I was almost cought out by this con, and thankfully for people here on the forum, they saved me a few 100 dollars.

I totally agree with you , and that is one of the reasons I posted details about it.
People who have been scammed should at least leave negative reviews for there orders, and dispute with those where they purchased the phone.
Be advised that the model named "P780w" is also a scam, and if you can change the title of this thread,
Hi.
I bought one P780c from Aliexpress and it is obviously a fake copy. Antutu say MTK6592 an 8 cores, but
MTK tools say MTK6582 and 4 cores, and hardware is fake. Also it was annonced with android 4.4, but has 4.2.
I had in mind it could be a fake, but I made a try.
It cost was only around $100, so not big loss..
The phone works ok, but I have not got the GPS working, also the screen seems to have some problems when input text, not always get the correct letter.
I am looking for a new phone with 4G LTE band and on Aliexpress there are Lenovo A808 with 5.5" screen and N905 with 5" screen for sale. How can we be sure they are originals and not fakes ? From the price ? They cost around $100-120 with free shipping.
I would like to try one, but if it is fakes also, I have several phones with MTK6582 quad cores.
Hello. I need help. I am looking for FAKE ROM V603 LENOVO said ?! Officially there is such a smartphone and I'm already baffled. Do you know anyone advise?

What kind of Lenovo it is ? What is written on the box ?
custom ROM V603
it's a fake from China. Phone no central button as Samsung and Lenovo has none. On the box are the only Chinese signs and information for your stated V603 ... it should be MTK 6572

[HELP] Goophone i6 Plus - Very slow !
Hello my friends, I made a purchase on Dhgate.com a Goophone i6 Plus, the seller said the device was MTK6582 Quad Core and RAM of 1GB. Now he arrived, he found it very slow and downloaded CPU-Z to check, I came across this, MT6572 4 cores and 512MB RAM (Screenshots). I do not quite understand processor, as do, to enable the two nuclei that are "stopped"? As for RAM, the device is consuming almost it all, which is causing crashes on, is there any solution? Help me please, I spent a lot from this unit.
If you have to do root, I do, no problem, except that I can not activate the USB debug option because it use Apple's Settings application.
Screenshots in the comment below.
Sorry, but the Goophone is a very poor iPhone clone, and the spec CPU-Z is giving you correctly matches the i6 Plus model.
The 2 stopped cores merely means they're not being used currently. the 512mb of RAM -will- leave your device almost unusable as it's just not enough. Rooting will not improve the device performance at all.
When buying a lemon, one should not be surprised if the experience leaves a sour taste in the mouth, sorry. If I were you, I'd try to return it for your money back and steer clear of those junk devices in future. Always research your purchases.

Thank you for answering me, what device do you recommend I buy?
I like a lot of iPhone clones, and I see some that are Octa-core, 2GB RAM, TouchID, is it good? One of these costs about 250 USD. But the mine was 120 USD.

Most clones do not really have the hardware they claim to and to be honest your best bet would be to avoid them all together.
Not to mention you will find almost 0 development for them

Hi! I just bought a Goophone i6 plus V3. Everything works fine: sensors, touch ID, Wifi, bluetooth, calls, data and GPS. But as this devices comes from China, Google is banned there, the main issue I have with my phone is GPS Location. It is default China and I can't re-assign it to my country (my ignorance I guess). I can use Maps (this even tracks very fine my route), FB, Whatsapp, Line, Instagram, etc. it runs smoothly, but I am not able to use apps that requiere full location services as Google+, Snapchat or We Heart it, p.e. Since the phone is going crazy trying to lock to China satellites, battery consuption is level God.
