I'm planning to buy a used SIII through a local website that offers a space for people to display ads for their phones (something like Swappa), but the problem is that I have seen many fake products which looked exactly the same and even have TouchWiz on JB. What's more confusing is that most of these products have a printed valid IMEI number.
I though I might compare the valid printed IMEI with the one I get when dialing *#06#, but I'm not sure if that number can be faked as well.
Any advice on what to look for when examining a used SIII?
PS: I will have physical access to the phone before buying.

Well can you touch the phone ? I mean dose the seller give it in your hands to play around with it ?. If so I think you could just download Antutu and see the specs and everything there.

Antutu benchmarks does not show whether it is real or not. Benchmarks are not accurate. To OP: If u can use the phone, go to download mode thru Volume down+Home+Power button and check the model name.

I think Denzof intended to point out to check the real hw specs like the presence of a quad core 1.4 CPU, and 1 g of ram etc as most of the fake S3's, in best cases, have max of a dual core cpu and 512 mb ram or may be less.

Don't you think that the "download mode" can be emulated as well with the same model number as the original?

So...a few spec sheets list the Galaxy Note's Processor as a Snapdragon S3, but don't say a word more. There are no teardowns, no photos of the internals.
Besides tearing down my own--and my friends cell phones, where is there a centralized database for information like this? The fcc website is a joke to navigate...you need to have a masters and be a librarian to find your way. Isn't there some legal reason to readily make available information like this?
Anyways,
Details on the internals. Discuss. Model numbers, part numbers, etc.

The processor info on that link is correct.
The processor is the qualcomm MSM8660 snapdragon S3.
The only thing I see that is incorrect is the max SD Card size, listed as 32GB. It is already known that 64gb will work.

sgs3 already running latest firmware as per youtube posting. similar issue observe on more than 1 sgs3 even though it is had been reset to factory default.. it is clearly a lag of ram capacity which cannot be resolve with taskmanager of any kind, therefore, do not post any suggestion to use any task manager from google play store as it will never help.
this post are not intended to seek help or suggestion but merely to share a prominent issue who impact power user. there are many other scenario in other thread that are also a valid example that RAM size clearly matters. Quote from other thread has confirm that 2GB RAM Korea unit doesn't exhibit any of the RAM issue related to 1GB model.
Don't recommend any custom rom unless you are able to simulate the issue consistently and solve by using a custom rom and post a valid video that demonstrate the issue are resolve by custom rom.

This is the Q&A forum. You're just posting a complaint, and it's a complaint that we already have several different threads on. It's not the phone, it's the ROM.
Playing video games coded in (one of) the worst programming languages for mobile phones and being astonished that it needs a lot of ROM?
News at 11.
Whoever says that RAM size does not matter is a retard. Bill Gates himself made the mistake of claiming that none would need more than 64KB of memory. However there is a difference between it being advantageous and it being a requirement.

Actionscript is really not designed for mobile devices and needs huge amounts of power and RAM.
Can someone tell me where I can read about the specs of Galaxy S3 and the specs about what everything is?
I mean we have "Arm Cortex A9", which is the CPU right? But the instruction set is "ARMv7" as I understand it, like to know more about that.
Then there's "Tegra 3", which I now understand is not in the S3 but rather "Exynos 4412". And that is the GPU?
And then there's something called ARMv7 NEON.
Well, those are the things I want to learn about. And I think it's better to read some spread sheet or whatever instead of getting short, sporadic answers here.
But I have Googled for a long time now and most pages is just copies from the same source and not very specific.
In conclusion, if you can point me to a site or file where I can read about all this, I will let you have my wife for 2 nights!
Since I am not married you will have to settle for myself in a wig portraying your dream woman! Sound good? Naaah.. I know
But you will have my sincere gratitude!

Well, i can say that the exynos 4412 is the chip set that's the S3 uses. So basically that is the quad core goodness. Tegra 3 is a dofferent chip set, made by a different manufacture (ndiva[ sorry i spelt that wrong]). Each chipset handles tasks differently. Tegra 3 i belive is suppose to be great at 3D gaming if i recall properly, however Tegra 3, in my opinion (i have a Tegra 3 device) is crap. Exynos 4412 and the exynos 4453(?) That is going to be released by Samsung are much better. However probably the best chipset out there is most likely the snapdragon S4. I have only seen this in dual core phones, but once this chipset hits quadcore it will be unstoppable. Armv7 is the artitechure of... something. Sorry I do not know too much about ARM besides ARM9 is better than 7 and 11 is better than 9 and so on. ARM is kinda the same thing as Intel on a windows computer, but ARM has MUCCHH more battery life. So basically if u ran Windows on your android phone it would lag a lot, not because the phone doesn't have the power, but because the OS is not designed for the way the hardware is set up. But if u run Linux( which is designed for ARM on your android developed device it runs smoothly (can say this is true, I've tried it ) that noted, Linux can run on a Intel windows computer smoothly. Not sure why. I've basicily spewed as much knowledge as I have at you here, but i also want to let u know that you will eventually learn what all these chip sets are and what they do, etc with time. (I am presuming you are relatively new with Android, i apologize if i am mistaken)

There was a lot of good info there nodstuff and I probably can piece it together now with a little patience.
But one thing that is not mentioned is NEON. Where does that fit in?
OK, quad s4 is not "unstoppable" just wait for the 5 series exynos processors which will be true A-15 architecture.
They will kerb stomp the **** out of the s4.
Also Armv7 is not the same as A-9, v7 is the instruction set, there is also an A-7 and it is the architecture. (A-9, A-7, A-15, etc.)

Any and All,
I recently purchased an Android Note II at a market. I knew the phone was from "overseas". The box shows 5.5" QHD, Quad Core CPU 1gig ram etc.
Later after using the phone I noticed that it was not working as expected. Using some play store apps, the hardware reads dual core cpu 512megs of ram. The chipset is the MTK6577.
Is it possible I got a phone with incorrect firmware for the model or did I get ripped off? The MTK6577 seems to be popular and used in many phones. Could someone have mistakenly flashed a MTK6589 with the MTK6577 and have a result of a working but half as powerful phone?
Is there a way to tell with absolute certainty what my phone is? The IMEI Numbers are correct and shows MODEL S7100.
Thanks very much in advance. I know I am probably grasping but if you don't ask...
jason
you got tricked on this market. you can never be sure to get what you was buying, all those boxes are printed with wrong informations. surely you got a mt6577 no mt6589, sorry. to gain iformations of your device, make a screenshot of your -> settings -> about device tab and post it here.

There are many of these "overseas" versions of the Samsung Note II look-alikes. They come in various configurations, CPUs in the MTK65xx series, 1 GB or 512 MB RAM, and so on.
If you bought it from an on-line seller and it is not as described, you could complain and return / get refund, or compensated for the shortcomings.
But if you bought it from a brick-and-mortar shop, then you should return it and get an exchange or refund. I'm sure there are ways to seek legal recourse through the consumer protection organizations.
the IMEI's of chinese devices are not what they meant to be. for example, my device shows IMEI of motorola Razr if i check it online.
So, I want to buy a piece of find x from a local seller, he sent me the pictures below, and the least I can say is that the datasheet is a surprise! What do you think ?
I add that it is a particular seller, and he claims to have obtained the sample in France via a parent to him, it can help understand?
* another detail, which is not on the photos, with the CPU info application downloaded on the play store, in the hardware part I get an SDM630! and in the storage pane I have 4GB of memory used and 8GB of total memory, contrary to what the shortcuts "about the phone" indicates and contrary to what I receive with the application CPU Z info, whose results are On the photos
finally, on one of the photos there is a crack on the back of the phone, what will be the best price at which I can buy it?
thank you.

D/L the app AIDA 64 to get an even better idea of what the phone actually has inside.
It may lack some components that would make the phone less desirable to own.
Myself, I wouldn't spend any money on it at all. However, if you like to collect items/one-offs such as this, start out with an offer of 1/4 of retail & go from there....

I couldn't guess a price until after I was assured the phone has the same functionality as the one available to the general public.
If it's a store demo, more than likely the functionality is crippled.

I'll add this & I'm done:
At minimum, you're dealing with someone who sells counterfeit/knockoff phones.
But, if you're convinced this is a prototype , it's likely been stolen,no way in Hell Oppo would approve..... discussion of buying such a phone in the forums is certainly frowned upon by the Admin/Staff here @ XDA......

Accept the phone only if the seller will give it to you for nothing along with further compensating you in the form of hard cash; for wasting your time. Seriously, purchase only if you feel you must prove a sucker is born every minute.
What's wrong with this guy
Use logical reasoning and common sense my friend
hello guys, do not get upset, it's not my fault if I was lucky to find a piece of the flagship for almost nothing, the seller gave me the monster yesterday against a payment equivalent to $ 45, so I had the time to explore it and the results will surprise you even more than the price that it cost me I leave you with the pictures !
