lag after root, check cpu speed - G2 General

phone was quick and snappy when new
rooted phone then became laggy
did a few mods mentioned on forum. still laggy
downloaded setcpu to check cpu speed for kicks
noticed max and min cpu speed was 300. changed max to highest.
alls well
i guess rooting changed it to minimum or i could have no idea what i am talking about.

Just checked, my cpu settings were normal, but ymmv

[Q] Overclocking - Pros and cons

Hi All,
I am writing this post to know what are the pros and cons for overclocking the phone. I know it helps to increase the clock rate, however if the phone can support it, why didnt the manufacturers made it that way.
And if we do it, are there any chances that the phone might blow up and stop working or something.
I tried to search on this topic but cudnt find anything.
please reply
Iam using LG Optimus One
Thanks !!
Hello.
The main plus is the increase in productivity phone.
The downside is that, theoretically possible to burn the phone, but I repeat it theoretically.
I myself have clocked the phone and nothing terrible has happened to him.
I don't think anything's going to burn as kermel always goes in panic if it can't handle it.

The processor won't burn, as 4silvertooth says the kernel will panic and you'll end up in an endless bootloop; 729 - 748 mhz is safe, 800mhz in most cases cause the kernel to panic.
Well oc has nothing to do with proceesor (don't laugh). Well at hardware level the clock (MHz) and processor are two different thing the crystal provides the MHz to processor and in return it computes at that speeds. So by oc we are telling crystal to oscillate at higher frequency. So if our processor can't handle higher frequency it tells kernel get lost I am not doing this for you as I am not able to execute instruction at such speeds. And all the governers are nothing but a rule for processors to execute tasks. Like if you select performance governer it tells CPU to execute at Max speed you have set. So what ever you set the min frequency it always uses Max speed no need to change min if u r using performance governer same for powersaving governer no matter what you have set for max it always work on min. So all the governers has different sets of rules.
Pros: CPU speeds up the execution
Cons: Crystal may get hot.
Bye.

No you wont go in bootloop.
Let me explain.
You will go in boot loop if you have set speed that processor can't handle and selected set on boot option. As the processor can't handle it and you are telling it to be always in that mode. Dont select set on boot. After reboot manually select oc. The second reason would be currepted filesystem as after kernel panic your phone has rebooted with unsaved changes chances are that filesystem table is currepted. Theres a command to check that I forgot name its like chkdsk for Linux. But no rom impliments that on unhandled reboots.

[Q] Is Overclocking Galaxy s2 to 1.5 ghz Safe ?

Hi im thinking of doing a overclock to 1.5 ghz is it safe for the processor and the battery life witch already sucks. has anyone on here whos done it using setcpu and the rom had any problems after doing so ? and how much faster is 1.5 ghz compared to 1.2 ghz on the galaxy s2 ? and is it safe in general for the hardware of the phone will the phone get hotter or have over heating problems ? also what should my settings be for minimum maximum and the voltages ?
Of course oc is going to make ur battery life a lot worse.

I haven' used Setcpu in a while but I believe it's got a feature to stress test the settings to see if it can handle it. Generally the worst that happens is it'll crash. So long as it doesn't get hot. Heat=death for electronics :')
I'm using tegrak (from market) to overclock to 1.4. I found 1.5 was too unstable. Noticeable difference between 1.2 & 1.4 is almost none. Also voltage increase of 50mv was needed to gain stability. There is not much point of overclocking the device IMO unless like me u just get some satisfaction out of knowing its running faster!

This is true. I see no difference between 1.2 & 1.5ghz. But that doesn't keep me from running it at 1.5 when I'm playing a game anyway :'D

Well it's not safe, that I can say. Nothing is safe when you don't know what other things are changing with the clock rate. But still you could do that. You just have to make sure that the temperature is within limit, it will be definitely high, but make sure it's not that high.
And upping the clock rate to 1.5 GHz won't drain any extra battery than 1.2 GHz.
Regards.

I tried the overclocking and each phone is different, increase then test, there are many benchmarking apps out there, I was stable at 1.4, my kernel does not include 1.5 GHz, and irregardless of what people may say, running the phone at higher clock speeds consistently DOES drain the battery more than 1.2GHz, unless you have found a way to manipulate the laws of physics. I don't see how one can fathom the thought that you can get a faster CPU at absolutely no cost.
Many people think when the CPU running faster means you complete tasks faster, hence 1.5 would complete a task faster than 1.2 and hence save battery, but I believe we use this phone as more than a calculator, so when you are performing a task that causes the CPU to run at 1.5 for a period of time e.g playing a game, browsing or whatever you do with your phone, then the CPU has to draw more power to keep the frequency at 1.5 as compared to the CPU running at 1.2
All in all, I dialed back because I was doing fine without it and I did not need it, other people may need it, and I wasn't gaining anything. to answer your question directly, it all depends on what you do with your phone, I'm not a huge gamer or anything and the 1.2GHz has proven to be more than enough for me to have a very pleasant experience using this device
Using it occasionally is safe, unless you stress your mobile at 1.5+ ghz for more than an hour or so.
The cpu governor will only make use of higher frequencies when there is a need, so mostly you will see your mobile idling at 200 mhz.

Not necessarily a lot worse. It depends on how you are using your phone, and what is causing it to run fast. If overclocking allows the phone to spend longer in deep sleep state, your battery will win. If its games, and by OC you achieve a higher frame rate, then the phone is doing more work, and this will be reflected in the battery life going down.
Most of the time, screen on is going to dominate. If you are a low screen-on user, I guess there is more chance for a higher max_cpu to be beneficial (it won't be used unless there is a task that requires it). More accurately, it helps some of the time, so the net result is not always obvious to predict.
How about undervolting?
Any danger in doing so- other than crashing when voltage is too low?
Before over clocking it might be worth downloading cpuspy from the market and seeing what time you spend in each speed.
Chances are most of the time you won't even hit 1.2 so might not have anything to gain by over clocking.
Then again I dont know how you use your device but I do know I was surprised when I found out.

I've played with the SuperSonic version of this phone (which has a 1.5Ghz core) and the results from photos/video are much better, I'm pretty sure the cameras are exactly the same but the SuperSonic benefits from the higher CPU.
I think it would be cool if somebody could write an app that states
IF user opens Camera application voltage + clock speed is increased to allow stable 1.5GHz speed
WHEN user closes camera application overclock turns off.
Thoughts?
You have a smartphone! Not a pc!
I didnt see any advantage if you oc to 1.5
Btw In normal use your phone keep in 200mhz not 1.2.
I think i only hit 1.2 two or 3 times for 3 seconds in a full battery cycle.

oc dosnt make sense ,there no noticeable diff,an yes very few times i hit 1.2 mostly its on 800 or few times on 1000....using a device with 1.5ghz proccesor an oc a device to 1.5 ghz which has 1ghz processor is very diff in nature....
Fair enough.
Well I wouldn't mind an app that mazes out at 1.2GHz with camera app open, as it can lag when shooting HD.
oc upto 1.4 ghz is fair enough, anything more than that is a waste. though you cant find any visible difference between 1,1.2 and 1.4 it does helps in maintaining smoothness on some situations.
yes very true i had oc my sgs1 at 1.2ghz and sgs2 at 1.4ghz but frankly i dint see the diff so after few days use i turnd to orignal settings....but many use oc an phone works fine, but depends on personel use......an yes as bala_gammer says its fine on 1.4ghz......cheeeerz

hey mate
u really think 100mhz would make that much change? its safe btw... seen people running s2 at clock speed higher than 1.3ghz
Plz help @..Longtime hd gaming(gta sa,nfs mw , asphalt, modern combat...) using 1.4 ghz is safe?
I also noted that gameloft games are makes more over heat for phone..
Which is the best and safe voltage level for 1.4 ghz 1250mv or 1275mv or 1300mv
Iam using siyah v6.0b5 kernel with wizzedkat 3.1..

Ok, I got one question... Is it ok to use max default cpu speed (if I'm not overclocked). 1024... Or should I put a lower amount...
Sorry for my bad English.

As for me, 800 MhZ is enough for comfortable work.
Overclocking is needed only in "Heavy" games.

1024Mhz is stock speed and yes its safe to use.
If you using your phone only for calling/sms...then 800Mhz is enough.
For calls you can eaven use 600 and if you have your rom rooted you can set the voltage a bit lower.
But from my experience you can easy use the 1 ghz freq and the battery lasts long if you don´t use much your phone.
Neo works fine at 1.4 ghz from performance and battery.
If you use sio i/o and lagfree.
Depending on your CPU you could undervolt it at 1ghz and achieve the same results as it is on 800mhz. But yeah 1ghz is efficient enough just stay away from Live Wallpapers.
i run on stock tweaked perfect battery live on 1024 Mhz
full perfermonce with no problems with antutu cpu master pro

Even devices with 600-700mhz is browsing web, watching YouTube, have live wallpapers, playing music, record videos......and etc
So why not use our phones too 700mhz
Please guys don't forget...minimum CPU with rooted phones have 122mhz
If they work even so low frequency...why not 600mhz....or up.
Edit. I'm using 122-1300mhz, screenoff 122-567mhz smartass/all frequency voltages lowered -50mV.

Minimum CPU Speed

I'm using CM9 RC1 on a Note right now and the default settings are 200 Mhz min and 1.4 Ghz max.
Is there any benefit to using a higher min like 500 Mhz or is it just a waste of power? I'd assume it would be slightly faster upon wake up.
You can always try, as long as you know what you're doing. Are you familiar with overclocking, and how to test higher clock speeds without having them set on boot until you have tested for stability. 200MHz seems a bit low for echo 0, but you can try to start bumping up echo table 0 values slowly and at small incremental increases. For instance, from 200MHz, go to 220MHz and test, then if stable bump up to 240MHz and so on. Jumping from 200MHz to 500MHz may not be the best idea without a "seasoning" of the CPU at echo table 0...

I've overclocked on PCs before but I'm not overclocking. I just want to know if there's any benefit to setting a higher min speed.
It probably will not yield any performance increase to clock your lowest frequently scaling higher, since likely your device's governor (I'm assuming) is set to mot_hotplug.
Unless you're using a governor setting of "performance" or the like, your CPU's governor will step down through the kernel's frequently tables as determined by the load. Again, unless you're running a governor setting that does anything but what is similarly done with mot_hotplug the CPU's core(s) will be turned off when not demanded.

I´ve been using ondemand-noop min 245, max 1024
Ok. That was 2012. Now is 2020. Updates to minimum and maximum for Android 8/9???

Just to have said it: CPU speed affects performance of Android device, doesn't depend on Android version. The more a processor is stressed the more the battery is drained. IMHO CPU speeds matter less than they did in the past, thanks to the advent of multi-core processors as they installed in ( most ) modern phones. Multi-core processors always have a "mixed speed": Not all cores are stressed the same way. Also, note how these multi-cores processors are designed: Octa-cores for example aren't using all 8 cores at once. Octa-cores use 4 high speed cores and 4 low speed power efficient cores. An Octa-core uses the 4 power efficient cores most of the time, but switches to the higher speed cores as needed for power intensive tasks.
I don't think there is a way to configure each cpu-core's max /min speed separately. BTW: Even today most Android apps/games make use of 2 cores only.

cpu question

i was messing aroud with voltage control and cpu spy and i noticed that the cpu speed was only topping out at like 1ghz these phones come with dual core 1.5 ghz correct? mine has never seen that high of a speed is there a reason or am i missing something? on my s2 it had a 1.2 dual core cpu i believe and it said how long each speed had seen action and i even bumped it up to like 1.4. im nervous to mess around with the speed if its already 1.5 i was just gonna set it to like 1.6 or something.but it seems mine is running each core at just 1ghz can anyone lend me some light on this.
You have Power Saving ON , that limits max cpu speed.
ahh thank you so much another question on spu spy it says unused cpu stats im guessing is 1.1 and 1.2 is there a reason they are unused? also just a guess but looks like i cant go any higher than 1.5 with voltage control? is there another app that lets me bump it up to like 1.6? or 1.7?
Don't worry about it , cpuspy doesn't have full history of your cpu activity, cpu clocks up and down depending on load.
CpuSpy is not very reliable from my experience.
You need to flash a different kernel that will allow you to over clock the cpu. Voltage control will allow you to do this but you need a kernel that will let you over clock first.
