I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 that is about 6 weeks old. A couple of days ago, an area of my screen became purple and is staying that way. See the right side of the attached image. (Ignore the moire patterns that are just an artifact of the photo.)
1) Any idea what could cause this? Is this a clear warranty replacement issue?
2) About warranty replacement: I purchased the phone from The Telephone Booth in Canada, on the Bell network, then rooted and unlocked it, but kept with the stock firmware. If I relock it to Bell and use a USB jig to get rid of the download count, will I have any trouble get it replaced on warranty?

I think if you reset to stock and wipe the states with the jig you should be good to go.
How ever I would try to get a direct replacement from phone Booth as bell takes forever to fix a phone.

As far as I know, there's no stock kernel available yet, so I don't know how to unroot the phone. But I'm hoping that if the download count is reset to zero and it is re-locked to Bell, then I won't have trouble...
I would opt for a direct replacement if you are within the time frame. I was able to swap handsets from best buy with a different kernel installed. I just made sure it was a stock KG2 version so that it wouldn't stick out too much or have the yellow triangle at boot. Good luck

I'd the same problem but after a night my screen became all purple.

Yes, it was repaired under warranty. But it took quite some time to get repaired.

Does your screen became all dark/black after 2 days?
Mine became very dark, I cannot see nothing on the screen now...

Mine was purple, and gradually got worse over several weeks, but was always readable.
Any idea of what the cause to this is please guys?
I dropped my phone the other day in the toilet (unused before you ask ), and fished it out as quick as possible. Took battery straight out, put in rice for a couple of nights. Put it all back together, and all working perfectly fine.
Then, the following day, I noticed a purple mark on the screen, which has a bigger portion of purple that looks like an ink mark, and then the blotching around the purple that is more like in the photo above.
Thinking it might be some damp, I returned back to rice to take out, and have it in there still, so hopefully might disappear, but doubtful...
Now, is this an LCD screen issue? How do I know what the water damage indicators look like before they show that it's had water damage (in case of possible attempt at getting done under warranty)? Are they clear to begin with, then purple hatched lines, or purple hatched to begin with and turn clear/all purple?! Any info on this would be greatly appreciated...

Its looks like the screen was pinched in the drop, not a lot just sufficient to cause a purple tinge, it to do with electrical conductivity across the LCD.
Just really surprised because with the gorilla glass I thought it would have been protected - unless the pressure was from the back forward.
Well, I don't think it was the water damage, as was still the same after I took it out, and then within a day, the screen just died completely. Can't see a thing through it, yet working perfectly...
Now, to take it to pieces and see what the water damage tags are like... If ok, then need to see what I need to do to get it back to stock rom etc ... Now, any easy ways to do that without seeing the screen?
Last night my phone was working fine, when I went to bed it was charging and still working. When I woke up this morning the screen was black, with no response. I tried to get into recovery and download mode with no luck. I tries these steps to get into download mode except for the usb jjg The phone is rooted and a rom has been flashed, but I did that a couple of weeks back. I have no idea how this could have happened. Also when I plug it in to charge there is no response from the phone. The screen stays black no matter what I do.
Also about a week ago, I dropped my phone outside, it was in torrential rain over night. The next day when I found it, it booted up no problem and has been working perfectly until today.
Does anyone have any ideas or solutions?

I'd faced the same issue once. In this state, even if the phone is connected for charging, all that happens is the phone becomes warm. I tried everything and the final solution was to get it replaced. My phone was covered under warranty.

Unfortunately mine is not, I guess I could get a replacement motherboard then, are they easy to replace yourself?
The only replacement motherboard you'll be getting is a 2nd hand one; Samsung don't sell new motherboards (unless you're paying one of their service centres to replace it).
Given it was exposed to water 'overnight' & given it sounds like you used it immediately after water exposure (as opposed to immediately shutting the phone down, removing the battery & leaving it in a bag of rice for a week undisturbed), there's a fair chance even a motherboard replacement won't help if other components are damaged.
Water + electronics = unhappy ending.
Might want to start looking for another phone.

Yeah I did use it straight away, not the smartest move I must admit. I guess I will, just annoying having to buy a new phone. Thanks for the info, and thanks for reminding me about the bag of rice, in case something like this happens to me again.
Yesterday afternoon about 4 o' clock I tried that my Z2 is really waterproof by putting it in the sink full of water. After that everything was working fine except the speakers and the microphones, but that's normal when they're wet and after they dried they was working fine. My girlfriend said that she called me about 5 o' clock and she said that my phone was off, but it was on, I'm sure. I read about this somewhere that after putting Z2/Z3 into water they can't receive calls. Except this everything was working good, but about 11 o' clock I realized that the touchscreen has a stripe that isn't working, but about 9 o' clock it was working. Now when I open the phone app I can't write 1, 2, 3 numbers. I opened the service test menu and chose touchscreen test and there was a stripe that wasn't working. I tried to reboot the phone and after that when I write in the service menu code nothing happened, it doesn't open the menu, but the touchscreen was still not working.
I tried to repair it via PC Companion but it became worse. Friday I will take it to the shop where I bought it. I have warranty so they should do it right? and with this problem they will replace it to a new one or repair the one I have?

Better late than never hehe... Also you could try a hairdryer with cool/warm air. I own a z1c and some water come into the phone 3 weeks ago (the back is loose in SIM card slot). The screen started to flick. So immediately I put it in rice and then used a hairdryer for 1 hour .And from this the phone is working fine.

on my hair dryer there is only warm function (what is really warm and I think that maybe it could melt the stickings) and it was 5 days before. I want my device replaced with warranty
how you opened the service menu if you cant press number 2 and 3 ?

Yes, it's very risky if you blow warm air into the phone. About warranty, go ahead, Just be sure that the indicators in every port are white, and take a close look to the back and front construction, maybe are loose or there are gaps (That's what happened to me)

there's screen rotate so I averted the phone and that way I was able to write number 2 and 3

Maybe . If those papers under every port/flap are still white, simply talk about the touchscreen trouble and gaps/loose on the back or front but don't tell them about water damage and request a refund or replacement. But if one of the papers is red tell them how the gap is related with the water damage and request the replacement. If they don't believe you ask for a waterproof/pressure test in the technical service. Anyway try to get a replacement. [emoji1]

I'm in the same boat (pool water though), still under warranty but I still fear they won't repair it.

for me they looked the phone and they said that this is a motherboard issue so they'll send it to a Sony Centre and there they'll decide that they'll replace it or repair it (I hope they'll replace it)
also check the water indicator if it's white or red (it's under the usb and sim card cover above the sim card slot). if it's white then they should replace or repair it, if it's red then they won't replace it

Before sending it, I checked it out and I think it's white so hopefully it's ok. I hope they replace the phone not fix it though, aren't these phones built for this type of stuff? it was just about 10 minutes (3 seconds interval) at the pool.

I used it in the pool for a short time, it was working fine right after until that day at night the touch screen started acting up, by midnight the touch screen was all but ruined (not responsive), I left it in some rice overnight, but in the morning it still wasn't working so I sent it for repairs (phone is only 2 month old under warranty).
The Xperia Z2 user guide states it can be used in chlorinated water and I made sure the flaps were closed so not sure I want the phone repaired seeing as it could be faulty, so can you keep me updated?

yeah of course. I called the shop and they said that they haven't got any news right now, no bad or good news. they said in the shop if it's water damage then sony centre will refuse warranty, even with the indicators are white. but if water damage is caused by build quality or something like this (not user fault) and the indicators are white then sony should repair it or replace it, I think. now I don't want replacement instead of repair, I don't care about they'll replace or repair, I just want a working Z2
Question: if the thing that is between the usb and the sim card slot is red, does it mean that there is no water inside the phone?
I'm asking out of curiosity, since i am not planning on dunking my phone into water

My girlfriend bought refurbished S6 Edge (from ebay seller) 3 months ago and everything seemed fine for some time. To make this story short, I will skip some details .
After 2 months of use back cover started to detach from the phone. We guessed that problem was in faulty battery and contacted seller immediately, but he never responded. In his ad it was stated that phone comes with 2 year warranty. Then we contacted Samsung and they arranged free shipping to their official service partner.
After almost one more month of waiting, they finally opened it and found out that battery was damaged but someone was already trying to fix that damage before with some tape. They refused to repair it and it was just returned to us as it is.
I was thinking to order a new battery and change it myself, but as it turned out phone now has other problems which were not there before.
- capacitive buttons are not lighting up no matter what (tried everything). Back button only blinks once when booting up.
- adaptive brightness is not working no matter what (it is always on full brightness)
- screen turns off as soon as she presses "call" button
This all looks like problem with proximity and light sensors, but they all seem to work in *#0*# menu, so really not sure what to do.
We already filed a dispute with PayPal, but I guess not much help will come from that. Any suggestion what can we do here?

Sorry man, but it sounds like you're kinda SOL. I would honestly just try selling it as-is before the S7 Edge comes out. That really sucks though.

A couple of weeks ago I turned of my s6 one night, next morning I tried to turn it on but it wouldn't, it was completely unresponsive, black screen no lights, the phone has never been dropped or damaged in anyway or been anywhere near water.
When it was switched off the battery was almost fully charged, so I knew it wasn't a dead battery but I tried the charger anyway. There was no charging light and the back of the phone near the rear camera got quite hot within a couple of minutes. I tried a soft reset but it didn't work.
So then I took it to a local phone shop for repair. The guy in the shop said that he'll send the phone of the workshop for a diagnostic. Anyway he called up and said the motherboard is faulty and needed to replaced. Now he phoned up again and the guy who is fixing the phone is now saying the screen also needs to be replaced, apparently the backlight is not working. Now I know amoled screens do not have any backlight, so I asked him what exactly is wrong with the screen as it's a amoled screen it doesn't have a back light, he said he doesn't know just the engineer said the backlight doesn't work. He said the repair would cost £149.
My question can a faulty motherboard damage the screen? is he what he is saying plausible or is he trying a con?

A faulty motherboard can damage the screen (in various ways). All screens have backlight (except for screens like the old Nokia 3310 had) so the layers of your screen might be damaged or have leaked since there is a fluid "sticking" the layers together. This is (obviously) not a software problem, but I would like to know if you were rooted, had any custom ROMs/kernels and did you have XPosed installed. How did you root and did you have a custom recovery?
All my statements are afaik (as far as I know) and based upon real life experiences, if anything I wrote is wrong, feel free to correct me as we are all learning .
Thanks for the reply, I hadn't rooted the phone, all I had done was replace the vodafone firmware to stock firmware as I was no longer on vodafone and wanted to remove all the bloatware, but that was many months ago and everything was working fine.
I just find it odd that a perfectly working phone can be damaged so badly for no obvious reason, it wasn't plugged into the charger, I just turned it off one night put it on my desk, tried to turn it on next morning and it was dead.
So does the repair seem legit to you? I am just a bit weary as I know how easy it would be to charge for parts that aren't necessary. Also is there anyway I could check if the screen has really been changed as the display on my phone was in perfect condition, not a single mark or scratch or any thing to identify it against a brand new screen.

Hmmm, okay.
If you have the right tools you can probably make a mark with a marker or something that won't damage the screen and then when they "replace" it you can check if it is still there. By the way, I don't mean on the screen but on that metal part on the underside of the screen. If you don't want to make such a thing because you maybe don't have the necessary tools, make a tiny scratch that you can locate but won't affect using the phone or not visible unless you really take a close look. If you don't want to do that you can take it to an official Samsung retailer or send it to them (this is probably the most recommended option).
Unfortunately the phone already at the repair shop, I got a call a few days ago telling me that the logic board was damaged and needed to be replaced, I agreed to that repair, now he called again today and said the display also needs to be changed. That's why I'm a bit suspicious, I can understand how the motherboard maybe faulty and may have died, but the display also? maybe he damaged the display when trying to change the motherboard or he's charging for unnecessary work or maybe he's telling the truth and the faulty motherboard killed the display, I don't know.
I was wondering if there's something in the firmware which keeps count of the number of times a part has been replaced or how long the display has been used for or a way I can check the date of the display manufacture without opening the phone.

Unfortunatly, no,but if the phone is working after the repair that means it is fixed! If not, they will give you a replacement since they test everything to make sure it works.
