Got myself an Xperia tablet z yesterday and love it, however I'm not a fan of the usb charging flap, so I have just decided to splash out £30 and buy a sgp-ds5 so I can simply slide my tablet in over night and charge without messing about
I'm looking for a case that can remain on, but still allow me to use the dock, I have a few simple needs from the case.
Protection is low down on my list, my tablet will never leave the house, the case is actually more of a stand, I am looking for a case that works as a great stand when I sit down and have the tablet on my lap.I never use the tablet at a table,I just use it when sitting on the couch or when laying in bed, I am looking for a stand that holds the tablet at a nice angel whilst on my lap?
The other thing is price I want one at a reasonable price, I like the official case, but it's silly money for me.
I see a lot about the poetic case, does it fit in the dock? Also the way it works as a stand, doesn't look like it would work well on a lap, looks like it works fine on a table, but as I said I never sit at a table.

The only case I know of that can remain on the XTZ when sitting it in the charging cradle is Sony's XTZ case. I own the XTZ case and I found that even though the XTZ fit in the cradle with the case on, it was not really practical. I also own three other cases (currently using a Poetic case) which require the case to be removed before placing the XTZ in the cradle. But that is not a problem for me. It only takes a few seconds to remove the XTZ from its case or to put it back into its case. I also feel charging the XTZ with its case removed allows the XTZ to better dissipate the heat caused by the charging, which is a good thing.

Thanks for the reply, when you say the genuine xtz case fit the charger but was not practical can you please explain that a little for me? Do you just mean not practical in the great dissipation sense? Or for another reason?
I would agree keeping any electrical device cooler rather than letting it get warm is always a good thing, but Sony seem to recommend using both accessories together and have designed the 2 to work together, so you would hope the tablet would still be well within its safe heat tolerances when using the case and dock?
The xtz case seems almost perfect for myself, it looks very sturdy to use to prop the tablet on my lap, it fits the charger, it is the lightest and thinnest case I believe?
Just the price really puts me off, £55 is a lot of money compared to most cases
If I went for the nice budget poetic case, and just removed it to charge, would the poetic case hold the tablet at a decent angle on my lap and be nice and steady without me having to hold the tablet firm? Or am I asking too much of any case to so that? Seems like most are just designed to sit on a table and play a movie, but I am trying to help get my tablet sat at the correct viewing angle for surfing whilst on my lap without the need for me to touch it, much like a laptop would.

For another reason. When the XTZ is placed in the cradle with the Sony case on it, the case's front cover must be fully opened and folded towards the rear of the tablet and the case's rear cover must be pulled slightly away from the lower part of the XTZ so it will slide into the cradle. The part about the case's rear cover is not a problem, but the case's front cover wants to lie flat on my desk's top, which means a lot of clear area is needed behind the cradle and on my desk's crowded top, that is a not practical. So, it is better for me to slide the XTZ out of the case when I want to place it in the cradle. Again, the XTZ quickly and easily slides into and out of the case, so that is not a problem for me.

I agree; however, having worked with electronic devices for more than 40 years and knowing heat is their enemy, an enemy that will shorten their life, I tend to give concern to heat dissipation. It is a choice from experience to keep my XTZ as cool as possible.

The Sony case is a nice looking, sturdy case. The problem I had with it was the ugly elastic band that holds the case closed. The case will not remain closed without the band because the case does not have a magnet in its front cover like the Poetic and other cases do. The band also caused a notch to be formed on the long edge of the case which subtracted from the case's nice look, and the band would occasionally snag on something when I would pull the XTZ from my messenger bag.

I like the Poetic case even though it only provides three choices of angles for placing the XTZ; (1) right side up (Sony logo at top of XTZ) at 60º (0º being flat on a desk top), (2) up side down (Sony logo at bottom of XTZ) at 30º, and (3) nearly flat on a desk top. I say "nearly flat" because when the case's front cover is folded towards the rear of the XTZ, the front cover will not allow the XTZ to lie perfectly flat. For me, the choice of angles are enough. I mostly used my XTZ at the 60º angle and the case keeps my XTZ fairly firm in place, and I have no problem browsing web sites or watching videos. When I am doing a lot of typing, I use my XTZ at the 30º angle and again the case keeps my XTZ fairly firm in place. The case's front cover has a strong magnet that holds the case securely closed. The magnet is so strong that it also holds the case's front cover against the rear cover when the case is fully folded open. One thing I do not like is the USB port access hole cut into the fold of the case. Not only does the hole subtract from the case's nice look, it also makes folding the case open a little awkward. I wish I had bought the Poetic case before its manufacturer started cutting the hole in the case. The original Poetic cases did not have the hole.

Thank you for taking your time write such an in depth reply, the fact that the Sony case requires so much room has totally out me off that one. Thanks for pointing that out to me. So a case that it's easily removed would be the next best option for me I guess, which you have confirmed the poetic it's simple to click in and out.
Thanks again for explaining the angle functions of the case, can you just confirm the case works well when using it as a stand on your lap? It is a major concern to me and the only thing stopping me buying the poetic really. Thanks

I cannot honestly comment on how well the case will work standing on your lap because I rarely place my XTZ on my lap, but when I do, I have the case fully folded open with the XTZ lying flat.

Ok no worries, thanks for all the help. Guess I'll just have to buy one and see if it's fits my needs, at least they are reasonable money even if it isn't right.
Try too look on amazon you will see a lot of different cases. I have the cradle and the sony case I have no problem using both togethrre at all.

Thanks I've spent hours on Amazon and eBay looking at cases I've gone for a roxfit Sony one with the 3m double sided tape, to try first, seems like the lightest simple solution for me, that I think will go in the dock with the case tucked behind it!
Yeah so have I. They really didn't make as much covers for it. I dont how that 3m sticky cover looks. I have the slide in cover from Sony. If not go on YouTube and try to see what people have chosen out.

Op said protection wasn't a concern. Besides, the adhesive is surprisingly good. There is no way the two come apart without extreme force. Mine stays on the dock or in the bedroom so protection wasn't a concern for me either, plus its the slimmest case I've found.
So just buy the sony case, the slide in one or the adhesives type. cause you are looking for the slimmest one. At the same time it looks good having the same namebrand together.

My dock and roxfit arrived today, after much research I felt the roxfit would be the best for me so ordered one on Sunday.
Works a treat, I have no fear of the adhesive doing any damage. Fits perfectly into the dock very tidy with the cover pinned behind with the magnet.
It is almost the prefect case for me, its only fault is that it tends to slide down if you try and get to much angle on the screen which is a shame, however if you keep it quite upright it works perfect and it's very strong.
Really impressed with how light and tidy this case is, may just look at modifying it to help hold the screen at a lower angle in future if I feel I require it.

I've got the same issue, I want to buy the dock but it would mean having to remove the tablet from the case every time, its a tight fit so its quite annoying.
Was hoping there would be a case that would work with the dock (apart from the official one)

Roxfit Case
I have the Roxfit case, and can confirm that it does work with the dock.
Like other users I do find that it can slip down, if trying to use it as a stand, but not a great problem.
My main criticism is that because the front of the case is one rigid piece, when it is folded back, it covers up the camera!
The only way I have found to use it, is to hold it like an open book.
If it were divided into two or three flexible parts,(like an iPad case) it would be possible the fold it back on itself, and so allow the camera to be used.
Has anyone else noticed this problem, or have a solution?
The official Sony 'Natural Rubber' case (SGPCV5) will allow you to dock the tablet but it's pretty messy ... you can hinge the case away from the Xperia and have it folded back and splayed behind the dock.
Not at all ideal but possible if you really want to dock it without taking it out of the case. Personally, I'd only use the case if travelling somewhere with the tablet. At home it doesn't need a case (especially considering that cases add bulk) and since that's where the dock stays, it's never an issue that I want to dock the tablet in the case.

Just received the $33 FUSE case [http://electroniccrap.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=5_9&products_id=37] from electronicCrap. It is quite a nice case. I really like the finish on both the outer and inner.
The inside is a stiffer type of velvet or something. Not exactly rough, but not as smooth as microfiber for example.
The exterior is very sharp, and business meeting ready. It is a soft suede-like material and is a nice shade of gray. One big advantage of this material is a slightly higher friction grip on surfaces than leather or faux-leather. If I try to slide the tablet in the case on a smooth surface, it is quite hard. I imagine you could set the case on a dashboard and it would rarely slide.
The tablet is VERY secure in the case, and can be made even more secure with a bit of velcro or some other material to fully secure the closing flap. However, with only friction holding the flap, the tablet won't fall out even if I hold the whole thing by the folding cover and shake it.
The case functions well as a stand, sitting comfortably at all three angles on my lap bot sitting and lying in bed. The cutouts for ports are all perfectly sized. The dock port is accessible for something like the HDMI cable. I don't have a dock, so I am not sure if that would fit. The fabric over the microsd and usb slot is put together a little funny. The bottom edge (somewhat visible in this picture from electronicCrap: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10015338/Cases/hy3.JPG, it is the edge below the microSD cover) sort of tucks in where it should not, and the part that tucks isn't really necessary. This is a really minor thing that doesn't affect the function, just the form a bit. Seems like instead of an oval cut-out of one large connection between front and back panel it should be just two narrow strips.
The comment Steve makes about the magnets on his site is very true. They are a little on the weak side to close the case, but it doesn't bother me at all.
I ordered my Fuse case from electroniccrap.com last Friday and received it three days later. After three months of using my GTab "naked", I have to say it is a much more pleasant experience using it in the Fuse folio case. As ramerco mentions, the case feels well made. My only complaint is that there is no cutout for the charge status LED on the front of the GTab near the charging port. Otherwise, I would not hesitate to recommend this case.

I have the P3, and I love it as well. Is the only difference a matter of the P3 blocking the left speaker and the flap on top?
If yes, the P3 is a few bucks cheaper and I highly recommend that too.
i think the p3 cutout for the mini usb cover is not lined up properly. i don't know though, i only have the fuse...

The P3 is a synthetic leather PU style case that has a "slicker" feel to it.
The Fuse is almost like a suede feel. They are both great cases. I flip back and forth between both of them to fit my mood
And yes, there is a little bit of an overlap of one of the speakers, but it doesn't affect the functionality that much. It still pumps out descent sound!
I ordered the FUSE case as well and it's great. It's a great bargain. I highly recommend it.

FUSE - great case for those without a dock.
I read through a dozen or more threads here looking for info on all of the cases that were compatible with the G tablet. The only noteworthy negative aspect of the FUSE case that I could gleen from the experiences of others was the fact that it did not allow the tablet to dock while inside the case - for that you'd need the CLIP I believe. I didn't see any reason to bother with a dock, so I went with the FUSE (from electroniccrap).
Six months later, I'm still happy with my purchase. The material has held up exceptionally well (my 2-year-old got a hold of the case once and didn't manage to leave any visible blemishes or marks, despite his persistence) and I still like the feel of it. The faux-sued or whatever it is offers just the right amount of texture/friction to hold the tablet 1-handed without fear of it slipping out of my grip.
So, I suppose I should say thank you to all of the posters here who shared their experiences with the various cases - much obliged, everyone.

What I love about it is the fact you do not have to stick anything on the tablet it slips in and there is a fold to hold it in place.
It feels secure and safe and comes with an elastic which allows you to close it shut, or I use it to put my hand though to hold it better.
It also has space or 2 SD cards in the back, again a great idea to carry extra cards (might have to buy another 32gig card!)
when open and lying flat it seems to straighten out the folded design, so sits flat which worried me initially, but then found a way to sit it on the flap, and so you got more of an angle and the lap was protecting the smooth felt like material inside from any dirt on the surface.

There is small hole on the case which perfectly aligns with the small hole on the tablet so I thought it would work, but just tried and it did not, unfortunately.
Although you can just unfold the small flap and then it was fine. A shame really, but it could be the devices i'm using, or maybe the hole needs to be cut a bit bigger...?
is it very thick when close lying down on the table?? n with the case does it weight a lot heavier?

It does feel heavier, but not that heavy and I think knowing it's protected counters that...
as for the size, it is bulkier by about 1cm overall but again, the protection it provides does not put me off it.
Just the other day I took it out of my bag and had three marks on the cover where it's plug was pressing down on it.. luckily the leather took it all and no damage to screen.

I just bought one of those, nice to know it works well.
Are you able to plug-in the power while the case is closed? Can't tell if there is enough space or not.
How comfortable is it to type when the tablet is at the last spot? Is it still too angled or comfortable?
I also own this case, the quality is pretty good, the only thing that I don't like is that - for me - it opens to the wrong side.
The Tablet S is designed to be held on the thick side of the wedge, so you have to open the flap to the right side. When you do so (and you can see it on the embossed Navitech logo on the flap) you basicly have to hold the case upside down. Otherwise it's great.
@fluxman: Yes, you can use the charger whit the closed case.

Seems like there's finally an option for those of us that want to use the cradle without having to fiddle with removing the case. Check out the Sony carrying case SGPCV1, it's a thin padfolio type case that can double as a fold back stand. I'm not sure how it works so that it fits into the cradle, so hopefully somebody on here that desperately wants to use their Tablet S in a case with their cradle will buy one and show/tell us all. It does require you to basically glue the case to the tablet's back using weak adhesive pads.

It doesn't. I've bought Sony Tablet last week along with a cradle and the mentioned case. The case is excellent, btw: thick, but fits tablet perfectly, can serve as a cradle itself and is nice to hold. But it doesn't go into a cradle. The only option (besides removing it every time, which is not recommended) is to semi-open it (see the third photo on sony-asia.com/product/sgpcv1) and insert a cradle inside. It's too much hassle, so I just shelved the cradle and use the case at all times.
It does kind of fit if you fold the case back on itself, but it's more convenient to remove the case when docking and reattach at a later time with the velcro fasteners that come with it.

Would the tablet be held onto the case properly with just the velcro attachments, minus the gel pads? I was thinking that was one way of how this case worked with the cradle...you removed the tablet from the velcro and put the tablet into the cradle without the case at all. Which really isn't using the tablet within the case and the cradle like I had hoped.
I could also see that what makes this padfolio case unique compared to other Tablet S compatible ones is that it leaves the thinner lip edge wide open and attaches to the thick end. The thin lip end I figured was the part that really needed to make contact with the cradle, so wouldn't folding the cover backwards so that the bottom edge is exposed let it fit? That is to say, the cover would actually fold behind the cradle and cover the back of the cradle once the tablet is docked.

Yes, that works. But the folding part of the cover does not stick to the back of the case, so it would lie on a table, looking very strange. As I've mentioned, the cradle can fit inside the half-open case (see attached image).

The Nillkin Fresh case came about 2-3 days ago and I was quite excited. But that was short lived. The case is a faux-leather flip cover case with a thin plastic shell on that clips to the phone. It looks decent enough, but I have some problems with mine (possibly QC problems):
The case though didn't completely fit!! Along the right side (near the SD/SIM) it is a bit warped - not bad or noticeable unless your looking right at it and for it.
The case is held closed by a magnet, but the magnet on the flip cover is quite small which then requires it to be precisely over the other pole or it does nothing. Not a big deal, but I wish this was thought out better.
Additionally, one of the main features of the case is (link below) how the case being used as a stand. The flip cover is a tri-fold design which should act as a stand but I haven't had much luck with it. The inside of the seemingly leather flip cover is a soft touch, almost suede, material that is quite slippery. This plus the fact that the case seems to be needing to be broken in makes for the "stand" feature unusable... it falls right over currently. (I have tried multiple configurations).
Over all, I bought the case on eBay for $9.99 with no shipping cost (ships from china - companies home country) and it took about 15 days to get here (in the US). Not bad, but I am already looking for a replacement that will make my device feel premium again rather then cheap.
Would I recommend this case? Yes, but only as a temporary case until more come out - like the official Sony cases or a case from Incipio (link below).
** Complete side note: I had a Nillkin case for my old Nexus 4 which only lasted a few short months because the leather started to peel away from the flip cover! I knew this would be a temporary case when I bought it, so keep that in mind!

I was fortunate to get to try that case out and many others (being in hk and china) - and I posted about this case. It's unfortunate you didn't read my post and what case eventually went with in the big Z ultra case thread.
This case is definitely not recommended if you want one to work well with desk stand, and want to use the trifold ipad style cover as a stand.
The snap-in style plastic mounts doesn't make it easy to pop in and out of to use the desk stand, and the plastic mounts are shiny thus looks and feels cheap.
Finally, the cover doesn't even come close to the quality and feel of the ipad cover, even the vinyl kind. The material is stiff and plasticky and most importantly doesn't fold together to function as a working stand at all. It will unfold/collapse and fall over.
In addition, there's an issue with the the magnet. With the magnet closed, there is a gap between the last third of the tri-fold cover and the phone's screen. This gap exists because the case (mold or design) is not the right fit - the wider flap makes it essentially unable to align with the opposing magnet. If you try to push the flap down to get rid of the gap, you inadvertently push/slide the magnet off and the cover comes loose. In practice, the magnet will never be engaged because you'll always push the cover down somehow (pocket, bag, stacking something on top).
The only Nillkin I recommend is the http://www.nillkin.com/english/proshow.asp?mid=2&sid=0&tid=0&cid=1&scid=13&id=3516&page=1 shield case. I ended up buying the black one for scenarios where I don't want a flip cover. The fit is good, texture is good (good grippy backside), and it doesn't look too cheap (no shiny plastic). It's decent protection for rougher than usual situations. There are sections where there's a thin piece of plastic on the edge of the phone (like over the usb flap) where it feels weak, cheap and easily breakable. Besides that only issue, I like this case as a back-up.
For a flip cover case that works well with a desk stand, actually stands up, and feels decent quality - I recommend Kaso and Krussell. I went with Kaso as a cheaper alternative for now.
So I guess it's not just me... which is kind of a bummer, but I have already found a replacement. Now if only October 22 was here (my Birthday) I could get a new case!

Funny how the 2 Nillkin cases the OP talks about are the exact 2 I bought online.
I bought the white Fresh, and Yellow leather.
Anyway, after having used both, now I know that flip covers, despite the protection it gives, tend to get in the way of general use. Answering calls involve one extra hassle step.
Taking pictures, you have to roll the flip cover up into the triangle as if you are going to use it as a stand and hold it in your left hand, because simply flipping it and folding it over will obstruct the camera.
Nothing wrong with the build quality...I am sure it is better than most cheapos out there. All the useful ports are left uncovered (one of the reasons why I chose Nillkin...there is actual thought process that has gone into the design). If you want to use the magnetic charging port, not many other manufacturers apart from Nillkin make them uncovered.
The yellow I chose is less vibrant in colour (than what it seemed on screen), and does not go so well with the white ZU I have, so that got retired until the day I get SBH-52 and leave my phone in the bag.
For the Nillkin Fresh, I got in white, and am very happy with it, and currently in use.
It has a nice tight fit, seems to be made of good tough plastic, and the texture on the back helps with general grip.
I did make one modification to it, because even though the magnetic charging port is left open by design, it was impossible to get a good connection while the pone was still in the case. So I cut off the thin strip that runs along the screen side of the mag port. Filed it down with nail clipper file, and now it is perfect. It has not lost structural rigidity.
The number of times that i thought that I had closed the USB port properly, but was still slightly open (thus not making it fully waterproof) has prompted me to get the magnetic charging cable. I knew it was something I wanted while I was out choosing the case, so for those who are still looking for cases, I won't say go Nillkin, but make sure you go for one that has the magnetic charging port uncovered.
Whether you buy DK-30 is a different debate. Some like it, but some find it expensive for what it is. There are not many covers out there tat allow you to dock with it on.
But the USB magnetic charging cable is something I believe every ZU owner should have. For that reason get a cover with the port uncovered.

I came back to post a quick update about the case I got and this caught my eye... actually the build quality is the reason as well!!
The case is broken ><. On the top left hand side (near the charging port) the case has snapped. A piece is broken clean off and only after about 2 weeks. I know the case was $10, but I also had build quality issues with a Nexus 4 case, so I am going to say the quality is rather low.
With this new information, I am going to say stay away from this case. The long import time (from HK to US), and poor quality aren't worth it. Spend the few extra bucks and get a quality case you will have for more than a few weeks.
Just my 2 cents though...

Just got my cover in the mail today. Unfortunately it leaves a bit gap at the bottom where the USB port is. Anyone else got this cover and have the same issue? Also the buttons are a bit stiff.

Yes, mine is pretty similar.
I can live with it, it is quite a decent case for the cash and I like the stiffer buttons as they help to prevent 'pocket presses'

Ah! OK that's interesting to know. My main concern was it being a weak point during a drop (like if something hitting it square on the front edge). It's a shame it's not just a little more snug fitting as it would be perfect otherwise. The main reason I got this case instead of a standard TPU is so I can put the metal plate for my magnetic car phone holder behind the plastic back which works really well. I do notice when putting the USB cable in the phone can shift slightly up and down in the rubber housing. It's just a fraction longer than it should be. I have also ordered the Brotect screen protector after trying some other brand that is absolute carp! I am waiting on a refund for those (ordered 3 of them in case I messed up the first). I also have an issue with garbled voice on calls but not sure if that is down to my network or not yet.
Also the lack of accessories is rather depressing.
But that's what happens when you don't follow the iPhone/Samsung crowd.

Good idea for the use of the removeable plate.
Yes, bit disappointing about accessories - but the phone is great.
I have a Nillkin hardcase and a Nillkin flip case too - both really good and much slimmer fit than the J&D, but they offer less protection, so I will stick with J&D for now
