SG3 - Can't connect to USB - Driver issue? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all, I know this has been asked a ton of times, but I couldn't find an answer for my problem... so maybe someone could help me out.
I'm having issues connecting my SG3 to my PCs.
I've tried with USB debugging on/off, restarting the phone, removing the battery, download mode and recovery mode. On three PCs, Windows 8 and 7.
The odd thing is that it does connect sometimes, maybe for 10 seconds and then I get the windows sound like the device was removed. Sometimes it only connects as charging, sometimes it doesn't even do that.
I'm wondering if the OS could be a problem (I bought it unlocked, looks like they rooted it and installed a custom OS though):
Model number:
GT-19300
Android version:
4.2.2
Baseband:
I9300XXUFME7
Kernel:
3.0.31-702147
[email protected] #1
Build:
JDQ39.I9300XXEFME7
I also have CWN Manager 3.5 (though it gives me an error that it should be used with CF-CWM 1.1 or higher, don't know my version)
SuperSu is also installed.
Is there any way to figure out what ROM was installed?
I tried changing my external SD to mass storage with SGS3 Easy UMS, but that didn't help either.
Also, tomorrow I'm going to see if I can test with a different cable (though I've been using the factory one).
Can I maybe change my OS without PC (I can send files over Airdroid)?
Any ideas?

Don't you have a sd card adapter to use to transfer files to your card from pc? If you do or can transfer files onto the sd card read this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2002953 install recovery as per instructions in thread...Download a rom put it on your sd card and flash with PhilZ recovery (from the thread)..That was a quick guide!! Before flashing a rom read as much as you can on the subject to make sure you know what you are doing This might not cure your usb problem but it will install another rom if that's what you want

Ah, good idea. Yeah, I have an adapter. I'm going to do some reading before doing anything. Thanks.

Hey, just wanted to follow up that it was simply a bad cable. Odd because it came with the device, but a friend's cable worked right way with these drivers:

Anyways, thanks for the help.

Can't Flash HSPL Stuck on Serial Message

Hi All,
I have a little problem with my HD2. It has bin there for quite some time but in the past i used Active sync as a workaround to flash my Phone.
But i want to update my radio now. And i'm on Android NAND and SD. So normaly you just flash your radio or winmo 6.5 rom trough HSPL.
But when i hold volume down and boot HSPL i get the tri color screen. But i get a Serial message in the botem of the screen. And it just stay's there.
I took a other SD card formatted it with FAT32 and placed the LEOIMG.nbh file on that location but still the same issue. Cant flash the radio or the wimo rom. Does anyone have a idea how to fix this?
Thanks in advance!

Can you sync your phone with the computer? Otherwise you may have a bad USB port. Also, try a hard reset (backup first).

Well i dont sync my tel trough USB with android. I dont have wimo anymore.
And about the USB port i use that to put music on the SD card and make android backups. And i have not had issues.
The HSPL does not flash from USB it should pickup the image file on the SD card.

I suppose since you are not using WM, there is no option to change the USB port from syc to USB drive? Checking this setting would be the suggestion at this point. You are right, the USB port works.

I cant remember there was a need to change any option to flash from SD card with HSPL. The only thing you needed to do is place the image with the correct name.
Couple points.
1) When you put it in tri-color bootloader then connect to your PC, does it not say USB? If it does you can flash via RUU, if not we have a problem.
2) You cannot flash anything from a microSD above 8gb. If you are using a 16 or 32 then that is your problem, try an 8 and you will be fine.

On WM, you cannot flash via USB unless it is in activesync mode. Otherwise the computer just sees the device as a USB drive. I don't know about other OS.

Y i know. Dont think there is a way to flash in android. It might be possible to flash trough MGDLR with the right tools. But as far as i know there are only Android NAND flash tools not Wimo / Radio. But i will try the USB connection trough HSPL.
Nice the USB connection did work on my new PC! i had problems on a old one maybe thats why i forgot about that.
Win7 detected the flash device installed the drivers and after that i could use the CustomRUU to flash.
Still strange that the SD card did not work. But now i have a working solution Thanks guy's!!

For Nand Android, when you reboot, you will come to a white "fastboot" screen.
Press Power button while this screen is still on, and it will bring you to the CWR screen where you will be able to update from sdcard.

[Q] Music file transfer issue with new sd card

Hello xda peeps
I recently bought a new 32gb Kingston, class 4 sd card for my SII (ics)
I put the card into my phone, connected my phone to my desktop through the usb, and no matter how many different ways i try to transfer my music files onto the card, it fails. I have tried connecting through the USB mass storage utilities option, i have tried through MTP (although this wasn't available as an option until i downloaded and installed Kies), and i have also tried through Kies.
With each option, the files will transfer up to a certain point - around 15 albums or so, then after that, the files either don't copy across at all, or when i do manage copy them, they are totally corrupted, and they sound like they are skipping almost how a cd would skip if it is scratched or something. The actual files are fine (checked on my desktop) and i have copied files across in the past using the same computer (different sd card - 16gb Sandisk), same usb cable (although i have tried using a different one just in case), ao i am at a bit of a loss as to what is happening?!
I may still be in the dark ages somewhat with my desktop as i am running XP, but i didn't think this would be a problem really if i was simply connecting with USB mass storage or MTP and just dragging and dropping files.
Any ideas? The last thing i can really think of is that it is a dodgy sd, but does anybody here have any idea of any other issues which might be the problem?
Many thanks in advance!
Will
Sounds like the card to me. A way to check would be to find a PC (or buy a cheap one; I can pick one up for <$20 here) with a card reader & see what happens trying to transfer files that way & then putting card in the phone.
If that works OK, you could always try a full format of the card in Windows as well & then try transferring files again.

thanks for the reply, and yeah, i suspect it most likely is the card - the last thing to try really is what you suggest - trying to copy the files through a card reader in a laptop. I'll also try formatting in the pc as previously i've been formatting in my SII
One thing that was puzzling me a tad though and i did find a bit curious was that until i installed Kies onto my desktop, the option of MTP was not there. When the 'action' dialogue box popped up on screen, there was no option to open the folder to explore - it just gave me options to either transfer files using WMP or Photoshop. Similarly, when i opened up 'My computer', it was not showing as an external drive.
This was leading me to think that maybe there was some kind of conflict that i was unaware of using an old XP
Thanks again!
Installing Kies would have installed up to date drivers which probably activates MTP; Samsung may not have supplied M$ up to date drivers for XP directly/to include in Windoze Update maybe ?
No worries Hope you get it sorted, if it's still giving you dramas after trying those couple of things, post to this thread & I'm sure someone will have other ideas to try.
Edit - Had a lightbulb moment. If your phone is rooted/you're running a kernel with CWRecovery, you could try formatting the external SD card from there. One thing to be aware of if you try this, make sure you know the mount points for external/internal SD for the particular rom you're using; make sure internal is internal/external is external or whether they're swapped around like they used to be (might still be on some roms ?) on some roms. Last thing you want to do is accidentally format your internal SD

Cheers! And yeah i'm sure i'll be back later if things don't work!
Phone isn't rooted - just got stock 4.0.4 running, and all i've tried is formatting it through the phone so far - I'll try through a laptop later
Just an update on this.
Seems like it was a card issue. Put the card into a laptop, formatted, opened it up, tried to copy files over & the same thing happened. It told me all files copied successfully, but when i put it into my phone, the majority of the files were missing.
Thanks for the help!

SOLVED [Q] How to Boot from an SD card without changing stock OS

It's been awhile since I've done anything root/rom related, so I am just a bit rusty. (And I apologized for the long post).
I have no problems following directions, just need to find them. I have searched, but I have been on so many posts/pages, my head is spinning at this point.
Background:
Back in 2012 I rooted and installed everything internally on EMMC. (CWM, etc...)
I decided I wanted to go back to stock OS and run alt OS system from SD Card. I decided on this: CM10.2 Jellybean (Android 4.3) for Nook Tablet (IMG/SDC Boot) (22AUG2013) for an SD card.
(On that post, he has a boot zip and an image file for the 10.2.0-RC0_09AUG2013_HD_SDC_IMG. version. No image for the (22AUG2013) version.)
So, I used the file from this post: [Stock Firmware]Restore Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet 16G 1.4.0 from SDCard and was able to get back to stock, no problem. Currently running Nook OS version 1.4.2
I formatted a SD Card using SDFormatter, and burned the above mentioned image (10.2.0-RC0_09AUG2013_HD_SDC_IMG) using win32diskimager-v0.9-binary.
My dilemma:
The Nook will not boot from the SD Card. I put the SD Card in the Nook. I tried starting it normal, (power button only), and it booted to stock.
I tried the power & n (home) key, release power while holding n key, still boots to stock.
So, I added the boot file to the SD Card, first just the unzipped boot file, then I copied all the files in the boot folder straight to the card.
Same result, boots to stock. Tried booting with USB plugged into computer. Still boots to stock.
So, I read a little more, and flashed the repart.img, thinking maybe some of my previous root files were hanging around somewhere inside.
Did the same sequence burning the files on the SD Card as before. Same results. Nook always boots stock.
Can someone direct me to a post, or a solution, that I may have missed in my endless search on here?
I don't want to root if I don't have to. Everything I'm reading seems to indicate that I should be able to boot from an SD Card.
Am I missing a step? Do I have to run the Block OTA's first? At this point I am so confused.
Currently running Nook OS version 1.4.2
(Thanks to anyone who reads this whole thing. I just wanted to list everything I did.)
I can't see any mention of the standard boot from sd for troublesome Tablets: Turn off device, insert card, then insert USB cable connected to wall adapter.

The power source doesn't have to be an wall adapter, PC or a connected USB hub would work just as well.

So, I tried the wall socket method, and same non-results.
I am going to partition the SDcard and build it with the cm_acclaim_10.2.0-RC0_22AUG2013_HD_SDC files and see if that works.
We'll see how that goes
Thanks for the replies from both of you. Glad to know someone is willing to help with my quandry

[Q] Help! No ROM, USB not recognised!!

Hi all,
First off, get the laughs out the way. Not posted on here before but used the forum a lot over the past year or so and i desperatley need someones help.
Long story short.
1) Currently i can only access CMR 6.0.3.2
2) I have no ROM available on int SD due to doing a system wipe while flashing Cyanogenmod 11 nightly which failed due to Status 7 error ( did not think this error would happen!)
3) My PC & Laptop will not recognise the S3 through USB despite all correct drivers being correct.
4) CMR will not let me mount the 8GB ext SD card. I have tried formatted to NTSC and Fat 32 and both not mounting, get the mount error message.
To sum it up, im fooked. I cannot access the int SD to drop a ROM on it and cannot access the Ext SD card through recovery which DOES have a ROM on it.
Do any ofyou fantastic people have any idea what i can do apart from dress it up nicely and make an ornament out of it?
Thanks!

Okay, serious .. download the ROM of your region from sammobile.com. Install Odin on your laptop. Boot your S3 in download mode. Flash the firmware from sammobile.com on your phone using Odin.

Hi Hamza,
Thanks for the reply. This is one of the problems noted above as that my laptop and PC will not recognise my S3 via USB. Tried different USB wires and installed various versions of the drivers, uninstalled, reinstalled etc It just will not connect be recognised.
Any other thoughts?

Sorry, I thought that your phone will get recognized when in Odin mode or download mode. I am afraid I am out of tricks for now, but let me search and get back to you in case I find anything
Hello Scott,
Can you enter in Download mode on phone?
"First shut down your device, then power on by simultaneously pressing the power button, home button and volume down key. Now you will see download mode and you will be asked if you want to cancel or continue. Press volume up to continue or volume down to cancel and reboot."
For that part you don't need connection to PC (yet).
If u succeed entering in download mode, then use the link that Hamza posted, to restore your device through Odin
HI!
Its no problem to get in to download mode but as the laptop and PC will not recognise my S3, neither does Odin.
The very 1st think i knew to do was to try and flash a stock ROM via Odin, but sadly can't
I've flashed ROM's a lot however it was a rookie mistake not to make a backup on this occasion that was accessable in this situation. My backups and ROMs are on the Ext SD card....
Ive searched and the only 2 outcomes i can see to resolve are to mount my Ext SD card, which i can't do on CMR or to make the handset visible o use Odin or to drop a ROM on the Int SD but again, can't.

We have 5 or 6 USB cables for our phones around here, and only 3 work for our S3 phones. Worth a try?
One more thing crossed my mind... In CWR, did you try "mount usb storage"? Under "mounts and storage" setting.
I had a similar problem few weeks ago, changed recovery and new recovery didn't want to read exFat card...

Hi,
Tried various USB cables and nada. Due to this Odin, Kies or anything will else will not recognise the handset and that's on a PC and a Laptop.
As for the Mass Storage in recovery, the version of CMR doesn't have that option otherwise i would have tried!
I was focusing more on trying to mount the Ext SD card on CMR. Is there any suggestions on this? Tried NTFS and Fat 32 with varying cluster sizes but not happening. Any other suggestions?

Fat32 should work, not sure about NTFS... Did u tried another card? Or removing battery and reinserting after SD card format?
Thanks for all the suggestions.... Had a family emergency.
Tried everything, i now think that there is a hardware issue with the phone as its a Code 43 error whenever i try to update the driver so the handset can talk to my PC. Seen as this option looks fooked i can only now and try to figure why the Ext SD wont mount on CMR and how to resolve it.
If i can;t then no option but to send it to the big warehouse in the Sky,
Just to exclude, did you tried another SD card?

Lineage OS - Installed on SD Card Instead of Internal Memory

If this is not the correct thread, please advise.
Samsung GT-P5113
Rooted successfully
Previous - Android Jellybean 4.2.2
Current - Lineage 6.0.1 - Version 13.0.20170826-NIGHTLY-expressowifi
The Lineage install modified external SD card to be the dedicated internal storage installed platform with OS running on the SD card. I can no longer see the SD card as an external device in USB Windows connection. Basically it is messed up. Unfortunately backup is no longer avail. CWM is now installed.
Please please advise how to correct.
Thanks ahead of time
Steve
I will reply to myself since no one else will
Steve,
Android JellyBean 4.2.2 is gone since your initial backup is corrupted. If you want to re-install that ROM, you can take the gamble on finding it on the internet but the amount of malicious sites falsely stating it is on their site is too high to take gamble. Go find a stable official custom ROM.
You have two options available for using an SD card. Use it as part of the system memory or use it as portable memory. Either way, I have not found a successful way of connecting a usb cable and directly reading\writing to the portable memory. You can remove and place in a memory reader with another device but the USB connection has failed miserably with the custom ROMs. ADB is supposedly an option but I did not get it to work via USB cable.
Your on your own here.
