The greatest feature of the AOS is that we are able to root our phones thanks to some very helpful people. I’ve temp rooted my Rezound because I am waiting on the official Android 4.0 from Verizon. But we’re in the middle of the 2nd quarter and I’m starting to get impatient. I have the Eris, and I can easily install ROMs on it. I also have the Driod 2 which is a pain to install ROMs. For those who have rooted their phones and place ICS on their phone, are you worried about something going wrong with the phone and not being able to return it? Should I sack up and root it? Or would you recommend that I remain on the sidelines until its safe?
ICS Rom .:. Flash. One. Now.

(We're still in Q1 unitl March 31st! And I'm running an ICS rom, alternating between Ineffabilis-Deus v1.02 and Senseless 4.0.3 v1.0.) Well first off, the official ICS from Verizon looks to be a long ways away, so if you want ICS now, I'd definitely flash an ICS rom. And no, I'm not worried at all about something malfunctioning with my phone and not being able to return it. You can almost always return to stock, so as long as you can do that, you're safe. And besides, most of the Verizon reps have no idea what an unlocked bootloader is/does, let alone know how to check for one. So you should be able to return your beast (Rezound) to Verizon if something goes wrong with it. There's my two cents.
Final Verdict: Flash an ICS rom. Whether it's Senseless or has Sense 3.6, that's up to you.
Hope I helped!
Waiting until probably May or so is not an option especially when we have such nice ROMs coming out now.
I'm running Joel's ICS Sense ROM and it's one of the nicely polished ROMs I've ever used.
I also used the Desense tool to get Nova Launcher so it looks a little bit like ICS and I gotta say, I'm extremely happy where I'm at right now. Go for it.
I say go for it too and I'm not even running ICS yet.
I am waiting for my favorite themes etc to become available for ICS before switching and I'm in no hurry anyway as I absolutely LOVE the ROM I am currently running and don't really care about ICS.
I use a couple nexus phones at work and I see no real advantage whatever to ICS.
If you root your phone it will start to fall apart. All of the ROMs will then steal your personal information and make it difficult to go to the bathroom. Then there's the issue with hand warts that people are getting with these ICS ROMs that have come out.
Do it. Stop questioning it. It's worth it.

The devs have done a great job, I used to have a DroidX and never really got into rooting and so forth, with this Rezound I told myself I would dive in head first and I am glad I did, everyone here at XDA, devs and members are very helpful and i learned everything i needed to know to learn everything from unlocking and rooting to flashing roms, and it is a breeze for the most part, always gonna be some bumps in the road, but i would DEFINITELY GO FOR IT
I've been following the bounty for unlocking recovery for specifically the me7 device and ended up rooting it using the loki method found in the OP of the bounty thread. I also read on the discussion thread and continue hearing about having roms on the me7 device. I have the me7 and I haven't come across anything so far to achieve the aforesaid. Is there something that I missed or is this the current state of the verizon me7 baseband version of the gs4?
The ROMs you are hearing about are ME7 based not flashed on ME7 as custom recovery doesn't exist (as of now) on that version. These ROMs have to be flashed from an MDK rooted phone with a custom recovery but preserve your root (obviously) and recovery so you can go back to an MDK ROM whenever you'd like.

Thanks for the quick reply, I'm screwed for now. I got mine already as a ME7. I'll keep following on that bounty thread then.
You are in the same boat as many of us. I am just going with root for now, posted in the bounty thread that I would like to contribute. With the funds over $5k there is some serious traction and Verizon clearly knows how pissed users are but clearly could care less and I am sure they are overly joyed with how well its been locked down. There are a lot of talented users out there and its not easy to crack these things.

I completely understand, I am super grateful for any and all devs out there working on this sort of project. I was just making sure I didn't miss anything and was being an idiot who could have been able to install roms on his phone but didn't out of ignorance. By the way, I'm fairly new so is 5k+ more than average for a bounty on this kind of phone or is that normal here?

Questions are always welcome, that is how we all learn. As for the bounty dollar amount, I have not seen too many bounty threads before, mostly donation threads to get a dev a phone to support it. But I would suspect $5k and counting is a pretty good motivation
Hey All -
I've been digging, and I tend to be a lurker, but I'm not finding a safe place to put this.
In short, I am still running a rooted MDK. I have TWRP.
It used to be a huge deal for me to run a custom ROM et all because I needed to get the most out of my phone, but now that I have a great plan and an awesome phone, I found my need to flash not that big of a deal, so I'm toying with the idea of upgrading. I came here and started digging around. I found no real answer.
What I am looking for from the more seasoned and skilled members is, what would you do if you had MDK, unlimited Data/Wifi Hotspot? Would you just flash a 4.3 ROM and the new MJ7 Modem? Or would you just flash a stock ROM with the stock Recovery and take the OTA?
I'd like to keep Root, but (as I said) it's not necessary to have it at this moment, but if waiting long enough means I can basically get a stock MJ7 without the KNOX and pre-rooted, I'd be down.
Give me your thoughts.

I struggled when I had to type the response to this. Not because I didn't know the answer, but because I didn't know how to ask you why you didn't already know the answer? You're giving up what you already were taking for granted just for the sake of what? Not trying to be mean, just trying to understand.

No worries man, I didn't take offense to your question at all . It's all good.
Well, it's not a matter of taking something for granted -- if that were the case, I'd just do it and through forethought to the wind. What I'm looking for is what experienced eyes may see which could offer me a path I didn't think of.
I like the open-ended ability a completely accessible (s-OFF, Custom Recovery, rooted, etc) allows for me to do. I like having the options, but I don't need them right now. This questions is, in essence, a "Just because I have the money, doesn't mean I need to save it."
I've seen people suggest waiting, flashing just the modem, upgrading for all the performance increases, upgrading just for the new release and all that, but no one tying it all together for the most open-ended "I have an MDK and want to get on 4.3" solution.
I know I can flash to ME1 then OTA it to get to Stock 4.3 with root but wind up with KNOX. Is there a better way? Is there a way I'm not thinking of?
Thanks for reading!
You'll potentially lose the freedom to run custom roms forever... there's no guarantee that the bootloaders on ME7 and later will be unlocked so there's a chance you'll be stuck when Verizon stops updating the S4. You can run a stock rom on MDK all you want so I'm not sure what would be your motivation to jump the gun here... I'm sure an MJ7 based rom to flash will show up in no time...
I'd you do want to update I'm sure there are some devs that would be glad to trade you phones.

, you're essentially stating that we'll have an MJ7 ROM that may carry some combination of Rooted, De-KNOX'd so that we can use 4.3 and still have our custom recovery? This would be what I'm looking for.
Sorry to be dense.
I'll probably just flash the modem then.
Just relax there should be a mj7 rom to flash before long.

Yep exactly... there are already roms based on ME7 and MI1 that are close to stock with minor modifications, so of course there will be some of the same with MJ7 eventually. Just have patience and be glad you have the choices you do... some of us (like me) are stuck with a locked bootloader and we can only dream.

The point that your missing is there is no back, I changed my mind, or let me try something else. Samsung is trying to get the corporate enterprise business, which means ultra secure bootloaders and blacklisted updates that cause changes in qfuses which a physical change can not be un done by any software. So the unlocked phone will become increasing rare and harder to maintain. So a more apt example is time. You can spend it, but you can never get it back. The only route is to wait or give up cannot be gotten back.

I have to say that I was not expecting such a well thought out answer, but you have to realize that we've seen people upgrade from MDK just because they don't like how the "custom" splash screen appears and they wanted to get rid of it, or to get the newest S Voice or something. Interestingly enough, while you see it as "Just because I have the money, doesn't mean I need to save it."
I see it as "Just because it earns them more money, doesn't justify the existence and enforcement of having to use/see or be in the presence of the abomination that is Vz Navigator." But in all seriousness, my view is probably closer to this.

I screwed up, I meant to say "Even though I have the money, I don't have to spend it." Sorry about that . I see your point though and while I'm more naturally your way, I did chuckle at the Hacker's Manifesto. While I still agree with the manifesto, it can't be all encompassing anymore. Technology is in our every day lives, and you'd have to approach your life like a monk with supreme dedication and limitation to maintain that view in it's entirety. It's better to maintain that focus in the areas that are most relevant to you in technology and maintaining the guidelines of simplicity there.

So after attempting the goomanager method of unlocking my Galaxy S4 and after getting stuck in odin mode, and after a little more limited research, I have read in a few forums that you CANNOT unlock the bootloader of this particular model. Can some please verify or repudiate this for me, and if this is not the case, can someone guide me to a forum that can help me, because I haven't read a forum that specifies whether or not their method will work on this model of the Galaxy S4.
Thanks for any and all help...
First off I'm guessing you didn't read any of the stickies on this forum about rooting and or unlocking this device. Secondly, it depends on which bootloader version you have as to if you can unlock it.

Lol, I promise you I have searched up and down for a clear answer and I haven't seen it yet. Besides, most of these forums are several months old and I wasn't sure if anything has changed since the next version of this phone is about to be released. I didn't know if, perhaps, Verizon themselves had released an unlocked bootloader like HTC initially did with the DNA.... And I don't need to odin factory mk2, all I needed was a battery pull. I already have Safestrap installed. I'm way ahead of you. I'm not looking for a work-around. I want this damn bootloader unlocked so I can flash Cyanogemod. If that is still impossible I understand, but you people need to chill out. This is the QUESTION AND ANSWERING forum.

XDA is actually one of the sites that most for the most part is updated daily. There are multiple threads on here stating how the retail version of the Verizon S4 after MDK build ( the 1st release ) cannot have a custom recovery enabling you to flash any aosp ROMs.
Just takes some getting used to when someone is new on here that's all. Browse to the Verizon S4 forums and you'll see a ton of Stickies created addressing these kind of things.
Go to Swappa and get an MDK S4 if you really want CM.

See, that's actually helpful. Nice and concise. Believe it or not, I'm not new to XDA. I've been flashing ROMs since my O.G. A855. That phone was a beast! No locked bootloader b.s., one-click-root, simple clockworkmod installation... Those were the good ole days! I simply rarely post because I usually know what I'm doing. My last phone (Droid DNA, wouldn't recommend that phone to anyone) almost kicked my ass. I literally just purchased this Galaxy S4 today and couldn't believe the bootloader is still locked. But alas, Verizon are jerks and you'd probably need 100 years to crack their encryptions on windows 8 64-bit lol. Thanks for the input guys. I suppose I'll settle for Hyperdrive.

Start with reading this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2606501

The important thing to know is NOT the build number, it's the bootloader version. You can run whatever build you want if you have the MDK bootloader, and can't if you don't have that bootloader. So, that's the important question, whether or not you understand it.

I see, I apologize to the commenter. But this is why I'm here, to get help with what I am not familiar with. I was a hardcore Moto fan for years, all the way from the A855 until they ruined the experience with the Bionic. That was a terrible device. My first non-Moto phone was the HTC DNA. I had that about 8 months before I just got this Samsung yesterday. They all work by the same basic principles but I am finding quirky little differences that throw me off a little. It seems that with every phone I get flashing gets a little more difficult and I am forced to learn more and more about this OS then I ever intended lol. I honestly appreciate the help guys.

HyperDrive is a quirky and clumsy version of CM with mediocre animations. It isn't up to par with a several ROMs, including Eclipse and especially not CM or Paranoid Android. That's my opinion. In fact, I'm about to flash to Eclipse from HD.

Until we get Root for ZV8/ZV6 these are your only options. Well, there's always one more. Give up Root, Unlock and run it like LG/Sprint wants. But you wouldn't be here if that were the case.
Wow. I just have to say that I read these forums for hours heeding all warnings and learning how to properly flash, root, etc. before I even touch my phone. To see these guys attempt these procedures on a 600 dollar phone without thoroughly understanding what they are doing simply amazes me. I will shut up now. Thanks for all you guys do to make my phone awesome!

If u look at user's stats near their avatar, almost always the ones who are asking how to do this and that and how to "unscrew" up their phones are members that have less than 50 posts. I think they hear about XDA and come here thinking that everything posted is guaranteed or side effect free. These phones are like our bodies... you mess with one thing and it affects something else. I've been around since 08 and seen more and more rookies flashing firmware to their shiny new 600 dollar phones with no regret until after they screw it up. No disrespect to the newbies, but for goodness sake read up and read up and read up until u fully understand what u are doing. Us older members are here to help but we can't fix ignorance.
I gotta say, most of the time I agree that it's just common sense to not take an OTA if you are already rooted. At the same time, I was surprised by how much I didn't know when I started veering out of my "home base" forums.
I had an HTC Evo 4G and then a 4G LTE for 4 years combined, right up until this summer when I got the G3. At the same time, I got my wife off of her iPhone (came from a Hero) and into an S4. It took me a while to get up to speed with the G3, but at least that was a new community. I STILL don't know very much about the S4 - what ROMs are good/stable/updated regularly, what the different root/unlock procedures are, which methods do or don't mess with Knox (or even what that heck that is). I'm slowly learning, but I just don't spend as much time over there. I just wanted to get my wife's phone rooted so I could clear the bloat and get a few root apps running for her.
If you don't spend a lot of time learning the ropes, it can be hard coming in knowing a little bit about what you want (root or whatever) and then finding out that your OTA isn't rooted yet, or that there's trouble brewing between developers which is hampering development in some way, or whatever the case may be. Add to that the fact that there are really different "customs" in different phone forums, and the terminology is phone-specific at times, and new members are bound to get lost somewhere along the way.
I don't know what my point is, other than that I've never seen a community get stronger through flaming and ignoring new users' requests for help. At the very least, I'm a fan of polite replies, even if it's just to say "you're posting in the wrong forum - try the Q&A section / look for Sticky XYZ" or what have you. @engine95 is on the right track by putting up these sort of informational posts BEFORE problems arise. They'll still happen, but this can stem the tide.
kind of a stupid question I guess but I've been out of the loop for a couple years...
If I root and flash the rooted ZV6, will I have to reinstall all my apps? I used to use some sort of backup app but it was still tedious...

No worries. The kernel and a lot of the apks are different in ZV6, so I would highly recommend starting from scratch.
If you restore anything from backup from ZV4, you'll probably end up with issues.
LG/Sprint has really done some very strange things with this update. They say to optimize, but I think it's more so we can't modify it as easily.

I recommend doing a clean flash (wiping). It's a lot of work putting back all your apps and such, but it's worth it to have NO GLITCHES and everything working right.

thanks for the replies. Is updating to ZV6 a good idea or should I wait for Lollipop? Hate to redo all my apps for ZV6 and then have to do it again a month later.

If you're asking me, I say it's worth it. Everything works (to my knowledge) on this ROM. The new ROMS coming out (including lollipop 5.0) now for our LS990 have lots of glitches that need to be ironed out still. This ROM is the latest and has everything working and is awesome as a daily driver. It's going to be a while as the developers and testers get all the kinks out of the 5.0 ROM that is out now. Just my simple opinion. Also I love XPOSED and right now xposed only works on KITKAT and not LOLLIPOP (so far).

thanks, I'll get to work on it sometime this weekend.
Yeah I read for a good week or two before stump, another week before bump, after a nandroid xposed and all it's glory, no issues I've been doing this for the last four years and still read and follow instructions very carefully and ask questions, I just read a thread where a recognized contributor needed help with a soft brick, I'm running his theme, I can't afford to afford another phone, I still consider my self a noob 7 smartphones in plus I don't have a computer right now. Question is there any stable 5.0 builds
I think it depends on how you define stable.
Stable as in not crashing all the time? Yes, I think so.
Stable as in all features working? I think not.

Me, too. Or at least until the AOSP-based ROMs get past the alpha & beta stages.
Dammit I wish I had read this

Terminal command in twrp no computer required if stuck in twrp loop just did it and was able to boot back up

Prepare. Seems everyone has let that zv6 update sitting on their device get the best of them. Lol. Time to help. Thanks e95 I'll send them here. A few. Lol

Thank you for this guide, restoring my device to re-obtain root wasn't difficult just very tedious! My fault though, I for some reason thought the OTA was a radio update. I worked 70 hours this last week so I wasn't thinking clearly lol.
Added an option to fix taking OTA.
Thanks to @mrj0087
