I have a broken charger port that I discovered this morning (ugh). The question I have is...
How do y'all's notes behave when plugged into an HDMI port while running an AOSP ROM?
If your screen becomes unresponsive...and potentially reboots...
That's what I'm seeing while attempting to charge.
Just trying to narrow down what the heck she randomly decided to do to herself.
Damn thing committed suicide right before the N5 launch. This is making the jump to T-Mobile all the more tempting.

Woot gTabber here. No problems with my device; rooted, running Vegan 5.1.1, and working like a charm...until now.
I've noticed a problem when connecting the charger. When plugging it in, the gTab won't charge. The indicator light does not come on, although the green light on the charger is on. I wiggled and adjusted the jack until it connected and that worked for a few days. Now all the wiggling in the world won't make it connect. I tested my tab with a friend's charger and it didn't work either. It seems like there is a problem with the port and not the charger.
So. What are my options here? Is this something that can be repaired?
If it was a recent purchase, see if you can get it RMA'd for a replacement unit.
I had the same thing happen to my G Tab. Received an RMA and sent to Support. Received a call from Viewsonic that it was abused!! Haven't dropped, bumped or anything else. Using it with it plugged in is just begging for that dude to break inside.
I'll advise on what Support ultimately does if anything.
Edit 6/17/11: Received unit back from support. They repaired the port under warranty after about three calls accusing me of abuse. After the repir it seems to sit in tighter than before. You should be warned that support put the 4349 ROM and 1.2 bootloader on the device and cleared everything including the sdcard. I had to nvflash back to 3588 to get it reloaded with VegaN Ginger Edition and the 1.1 bootloader.
My 2nd Gtab is the 1.2 with 4349, I have had it about 3 weeks DO NOT like stock rom so I flashed it to flashback, then went to charge it as I ran the battery down, and I have the same problem! No light, no charge, sounds like it will be a fight with Viewsonic repair. It appears that the port has been pushed in. Has anyone out there tried to do their own repair? I have to flash it back to stock if I want them to repair it, can't do that unless I can charge it. Had software problems on my 1.1 and it took forever to get it back. I would rather try the fix on my own or pay for a fix in town.
Other than that I love both my Gtabs, the Flashback rom looks good but I have not had a lot of time to play
Once again thank you to all, any and all responses are welcomed
Jaye
If you're down to do a bit of soldering, pop the tablet open and make sure the power connections are properly tacked on.
tried no luck
just sent back to woot for refund
it appears that it ad been opened before suspecting they sent a refurbished. The power port was totally off the board pads. Tried to resoder must not have been a good connection. It sounds as if GTAB has a problem with this, or is it just our 2?
Think of another tablet any suggestions being as woot id giving me a refund
Let me know thx Jaye
I had the exact same issue and instead of trying to repair the plugin I ordered a dock which charges the G-tab through the HDMI port. Kills several birds with one stone.
The same problem with me. CosmicVagabond, thanks for the good idea, will do it.
Can you give me the link you bought it from? By how much did you buy it?
I have that issue as well. But wiggling the cable until I get a light generally works. I even bought another charger for it and it does the exact same thing so it's the port on the tablet and not the charger. But hey what's a little wiggling to get what you want?! And no, I've never dropped this tablet.
I was just wondering something. I noticed that the charger port on the phone is exactly the same as the ports on portable hard drives, like the Western Digital My Passport, and I'm sure many others.
With the hard drive, I noticed that the connection between the wire and the port wore out really fast, like within 1-2 months, not really unplugging/plugging it back in often. What happened was the connector became really loose and would become disconnected seemingly on a whim. You moved the unit ever so slightly and it was disconnected.
Since the charger port on the phone is the same as the ones on the drive, I'm kinda worried of it happening to the phone. I know it's probably because I'm just a little jaded because I went through something similar before, or if it's become an issue later on down the road, but I thought I should bring it up none the less.
Anyone else have any input? I'm curious to hear if anyone else has or hasn't had issues like this in the past. Maybe you can help put my fears about this to rest. ^^;
I had my EVO Shift for 5 months before I bought my 3D and I use my phone a lot at work, so I plug it in sometimes up to 6 times a day. The charger port on the Shift is still solid, working great and not wobbly or anything. It seems like you should be ok, at least with my experience it seems that way, others may have other experiences with the charger ports. I'm really careful when I plug it in, and not so much when I unplug it, so I am a little rough on it too.
It looks the same because it is a standard size port. Port type is not equal to quality of port. I had my og evo for a year with the same port with zero problems... and I wasn't gentle.
Chances are your cable will wear out LONG before the port will. If the port doesn't go bad in the first few days it'll be good for years.
.... What everyone else said.

Cool. Thanks for the quick input. I think then I can relax now. ^^
If it is as good as the EVO 4G it won't wear out if not abused. If it is like my old blackberry then we are in trouble.
Hi everyone. I just got my RAZR and have been fairly impressed with it, a big upgrade from my old SE X10.
I ran into a couple of issues though... I couldn't use the camera (no visual input from the camera, just black with the camera app overlay), and there seems to be a persistent HDMI alert, even though I haven't got a cable plugged in.
A factory wipe allowed the camera to function, but the HDMI menu is still there.
Any ideas?
I'm having the same HDMI issue. Seems to do it mostly when some form of media is running (XM radio app for me) and you move the orientation of the phone. Only started doing this recently though. A couple days. Coincidently around the first time I actually used the HDMI out. Any help would be great as this menu is very annoying and doesn't need to be running.

I talked to Rogers and they're sending me a new device. It seems if i press lightly on the "M" in Motorola, the menu goes away. Must be a loose connection.
Ok, scratch that. It's doing it all the time now. It goes in and out of thinking an HDMI cable is connected. Also, it seems like since this has been happening my once great battery life is now diminishing, and is running slower, lags in answering phone calls, and also the camera issue is happening... but only when it thinks an HDMI cable is on.
On an interesting side note. it seems i've found a sweet spot. When I press on the edge of the phone directly above the two tiny light sensors under the "M" it goes away. When I release it, it immediately thinks the cable is connected. I can only assume that it's a bad connection on that port to the main board. I've never used the HDMI out until about a week ago and that's when the problem started.
Hello,
I have at this port minor port problems with my phone I think but not completely sure that it may be bent as the device is second hand and I am not the original owner of it and there is no warranty since the phone is older.
Sometimes the PC will say that the usb or device can't be recognized I have to play around with it for the computer to even detect it :/
is it possible to use wifi to transfer data to it for now? would say bluetooth but I got a desktop therefore does not have a bluetooth module.
Would it be possible for a professional or myself to bend the port back in to place I have been playing around with it for a while now as it does cut in and out then goes stable for a few days then back to the same problem playing around with it all over again :/
I am thinking about soldering the A new port on but not sure if it's worth the risk as it works for now not sure how long or if it will get worse or what's causing the problem in there and my brother has soldering skills but basic.
I know it;s the port now I have tried
Different Battereries
New Charging Cable
Playing around in side there
Yes I it's not a software problem I am running a custom rom (cryanogenmod 10.1) but I have gone back to stock and same issues :/
Thanks!
Now, this is my third time on a SGS2 that i've replaced the dock connector and its failed on me, with pressure, the USB connection to a Windows/Linux machine is lost. What I want to know is this:
A. Is there a better dock/USB port part that is stronger than the stock OEM parts on Amazon I've seen?
or
B. Is there a homemade fix to make the port stronger next time I replace this one?
I'm only asking because I'm really getting sick of me taking really good care of the phone while charging only to get bit on the butt in the end with this crap and wasting my time replacing that one part on the phone.
