Android 4.4 Kit Kat features - Sony Xperia P, U, Sola, Go

So here it is:
http://developer.android.com/about/versions/kitkat.html
About Bluetooth:
Android 4.4 support for two new Bluetooth profiles to let apps support a broader range of low-power and media interactions. Bluetooth HID over GATT (HOGP) gives apps a low-latency link with low-power peripheral devices such as mice, joysticks, and keyboards. Bluetooth MAP lets your apps exchange messages with a nearby device, for example an automotive terminal for handsfree use or another mobile device. As an extension to Bluetooth AVRCP 1.3, users can now set absolute volume on the system from their Bluetooth devices.
Platform support for HOGP, MAP, and AVRCP is built on the Bluedroid Bluetooth stack introduced by Google and Broadcom in Android 4.2. Support is available right away on Nexus devices and other Android-compatible devices that offer compatible Bluetooth capabilities.
About RAM managing:
Android 4.4 is designed to run fast, smooth, and responsively on a much broader range of devices than ever before — including on millions of entry-level devices around the world that have as little as 512MB RAM.
KitKat streamlines every major component to reduce memory use and introduces new APIs and tools to help you create innovative, responsive, memory-efficient applications.
OEMs building the next generation of Android devices can take advantage of targeted recommendations and options to run Android 4.4 efficiently, even on low-memory devices. Dalvik JIT code cache tuning, kernel samepage merging (KSM), swap to zRAM, and other optimizations help manage memory. New configuration options let OEMs tune out-of-memory levels for processes, set graphics cache sizes, control memory reclaim, and more.

But do you really believe that Sony has not updated their devices because of hardware limitations? Even Xperia 2011 devices had hardware more than capable to run jb and Sony didn't upgrade them

Well no it didnt...
Only low res phones were cabable for upgrade and high end like Xperia Arc didnt so they could not just update cheap phones without expensive one.
Anyway they are Sony Ericsson phones now not from Sony so thats another reason.

I think it's time to write a message to Sony to be so kind and make at least the new drivers that fits to KitKat to help the XU, P, Go XDA devs to make a proper Rom. Fingers crossed.

Even though Galaxy Nexus is fully compatible with Android 4.4, Google is not upgrading it. Xperia P, Go, U and Sola users shouldn't pin hopes at all. Even if Sony were to upgrade older phones, they would rather focus on their flagship like S and ion instead of budget phones like U and Sola..

TI isn't active on the market anymore. That's probably the reason for not supporting Gnex. (why make new drivers and such when you don't release new products...)

That is logical, but I would like KitKat on my Sola so much. The ICS made this great phone a crippled device, so if KitKat runs on 512MB devices, then it's a great opportunity to bring the Sola back to life.

Android`s Nxt step

Rumours about andriod v5.0 (jelly bean):
Android Jelly Bean: Key Features
We've recently seen Google release its Chrome internet browser app for devices running Ice Cream Sandwich.
We expect to see Chrome become the default browser for Android when Jelly Bean rocks up, offering us the slick tabbed web surfing experience we've grown accustomed to on our computers.
As enormous screens start to keep onto more and more phones, it'd be nice to be able to flip it into landscape mode and use it like a tablet - especially as Android 5.0 will be designed to run on phones and tablets, like its predecessor.
With dual-core and quad-core processors now ruling the roost when it comes to mobile power we expect Android Jelly Bean to optimise these super quick chips and provide a fluid and speedy experience.
More power means more demand on the battery and Android 5.0 will need to make sure it works in the most efficient way possible, providing us with maximum battery life when we're hammering high-def, 3D games.
An improved power management suite would also be useful and Google may take a leaf out of HTC's book, which integrates power management features into its Sense UI.
We could see a "lite" version of Android Jelly Bean which is optimised to run on budget devices and which will allow manufacturers to offer super-cheap smartphones. Microsoft is already sowing the seeds with its Windows Phone Tango OS and we won't be surprised if Google follows suit.
If you're an HTC user you'll be familiar with lock screen widgets and this feature could be made a permanent option with Android Jelly Bean, bringing widgets to every manufacturer's lock screen.
Android phone manufactures have got user's backs up recently over the slow deployment of Ice Cream Sandwich to their current handsets. When Android Jelly Bean rolls onto the screen we hope it brings a clear upgrade plan with it, with users knowing exactly where they stand and how long they will have to wait.
As we churn more and more files onto our devices, it becomes increasingly tricky to keep track of everything. Some manufactures offer file managers as part of their user interfaces, but Android currently lacks its own dedicated file manager, something Android 5.0 can hopefully solve.
Android Jelly Bean: Manufacturer commitments
LG told TechRadar that it guarantees an update to Android Jelly Bean for all of its 2012 handsets which are able to support version 5.0 of the popular operating system.
Asus has made it clear that it wants to be the first company to offer devices running Android 5.0, after leading the way with Android Honeycomb and Ice Cream Sandwich updates.
Android Jelly Bean: Release Date
Some rather optimistic rumours have suggested that we could see Android Jelly Bean make its way onto handsets as early as Q2 (April-June) this year, but we find this highly unlikely as we've only just seen the first wave of Ice Cream Sandwich devices launched at MWC 2012.
There's also some slight more believable speculation that Android Jelly Bean will arrive towards the end of this year as Google looks to continue with its annual roll-out of software updates.
Google has said that it will be flexible with the Android Jelly Bean release date and it might differ from previous releases depending on how long it takes to finish the update.
Android Jelly Bean: Successor
It looks like the next version of Google's mobile OS (Android 6.0?) will be known as Android Key Lime Pie.
General Android surely, not remotely relevant to the S considering we don't even have ICS yet
-brought to you by Xperia Arc S, XDA Premium and AOKP
Jelly Bean will not be 5.0!! It will be 4.1! Why does evrybodythink it is 5.0, Google has already said it will be 4.1. It is just like before ics was released everybody called it 2.4... Damn.
No offense.

Secondly, much of the article looks like general analytics and stating the completely obvious things that Google must do to keep their market share.
And finally, JB will likely be 4.1, which already means that the author doesn't know much about the subject.

Trolololol. Go tell that to Xperia mini owners who got ICS on a phone almost twice less powerful than the SGS. Which, by the way, didn't. And go sell your phone, get a Lumia instead and watch Microsoft officially deny all upgrades for a phone that's just a month older than the XPS.

I have a semi official confirmation that all 2012 devices and maybe some 2011 flagships (ArcS?) are getting the next major version. Which, by the way, isn't even JB but rather K, L or whatever.

Official: 2011 Sony Xperia handsets will NOT get Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

John Cooper, UK Product Manager for Sony Mobile, has been taking questions from customers on Facebook and, perhaps inadvertently, revealed that both the Sony Ericsson Xperia arc S and Xperia mini pro will not receive the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update.
We have been waiting for Sony to make an official statement on their Jelly Bean upgrade plans and this is the first concrete news we have on the matter. The Xperia arc S was the highest specced 2011 Sony Xperia handset, so if this handset isn’t getting it we can conclude that none of the other Xperia handsets from the 2011 range will get the update either. However, the 2012 Xperia range do look likely to get the update, although timing remains an unknown right now.
Its funny that many of the 2012 Xperia handsets have lower specs than the 2011 models. It sux! anw, we can hope for a developer to port JB for 2011 Xperia lineup. & Cynomod10 is coming with JB
Credit goes to www.xperiablog.net
http://www.xperiablog.net/2012/07/26/official-2011-sony-xperia-handsets-will-not-get-android-4-1-jelly-bean/
They have made a mistake
Xperia 2011 handets should have had that minor upgrade to Jelly Bean, especially given the performance issues. Also, it means those handsets are stuck permanently on 2.6 Linux kernel, unless one goes the custom ROMs way. Thankfully, Cyanogenmod devs are supporting Xperia Mini Pro, so I am starting on a quest to root my SK17i.
Jelly Bean would be slow on our phones if official update was done. Sony will push own Timescape UI inside instead of Butter UI, so we don't get any performance improvements in UI.
It's a shame, but it was expected...
Yeah, i also expect 2012 xperias will probably get Jelly Bean update around this time next year (+/- couple months), just before Key Lime Pie comes out

I wonder....
does anyone remember Xperia x10i? the funniest was they came from Donut 1.6 to GingerBread 2.3. they've got 3 official FW update.. and me guess we still have a chance.. Our device is not low range since we have 512 ram inside. and some of Xperia 2012 family also have the same type.
I was expecting this. They won't update 2011 xperia phones to JB. But they will update 2012 xperias. If I buy another phone, it won't be a Sony. Maybe a Nexus 7 but not a Sony. I was very disappointed with the ICS update. Can't imagine a JB for our phones, maybe to slow...
Long live to Gingerbread! xD

The thing is that to be able to create stable custom roms you need support from the manufacturer. Without proper source code or hardware drivers/libraries that suit the new OS developers have to tack everything together which greatly increases the chances of bugs.
IMHO the least thing Sony could do is provide a proper hardware layer to developers to give them a solid base to work from. Nobody really needs the Sony customisations anyway so they could actually save a lot of development time there.
Personally I'd wish all android phones came with AOSP, like what Apple and Microsoft do. It saves the manufacturers a lot of development and opens the way for more frequent/longer OS updates.
All hope of custom rom
**** Sony, where's Ericsson when we need him?

2011 series wasn't even sure on ics update (which, btw came out 3 months ago, not decades). The official statement that they wouldn't get jb update came out months ago.
Tbh I don't understand why people are so avid on updates, os improvement doesn't mean your phone will work better (especially if it isn't designed for certain technical specs).
As a matter of fact no ics rom performs, lasts as much as gb ones, just the same way a pentium I 133 with 10gig hd can't run win7....
So maybe it's just me, but i really don't get what the fuss is about, not to reach the point of a petition at least.
Sony as of Q4 2011 sold 32,597,500 units (only smartphones, this does not include ps3, sony music etc). A good developer here on xda reaches on average 5 to 6.000 thanks for a modded rom, assuming there are many ungreatful people out there let's double it, that's still 10.000 times short than the market share....why would they care?
Whatever the case is, if an official version doesn't come out someone will port it and there still will be enough to play around with until our phones will eventually be replaced by newer ones

I respect your thinking but if the device is capable of running the software then why the company is not developing the update if no update then they should give at least the Pure Android OS Software without their customization or any thing extra with all the drivers and kernel. or they may supply the appropriate drivers for the other developers like FXP to support their devices unofficially in the background.

I found it not surprising for Sony doing that. They're late to the game now even for flagship devices.
Most of consumers not even want the update or know about it, only us screaming and crying is not enough force. And most of consumers will screaming and crying with update broke their device so rom need to be bug free to release, it cost a lot sop they dont bother.
I personal think Sony should have 'for experimental testing only' rom release without any warranty when they can not release the official one, I'm sure it take much less effort and can satisfy the community at good-enough level.

not expect Xperia 2011 to 4.1 but still disappointed with sony
Yes it sucks... no official JB for all 2011 devices
will xs get JB?
It's a flagship one.
Sony Mobile has this morning confirmed that Android 4.1 Jelly Bean for its new Xperia devices (Xperia T, Xperia TX and Xperia V) will start to receive the update from the middle of Q1 2013. Sony Xperia devices that launched earlier this year including the Xperia S, Xperia acro S, Xperia ion, Xperia P, Xperia go and Xperia J will be upgraded to Android 4.1 in “due course”. Looks like Xperia miro, Xperia tipo, Xperia tipo dual, Xperia sola and Xperia U users are excluded.
We suspect that the JB launch for the other 2012 Xperia models could take as long as early Q2 2013, given that no concrete information has been given. It’s hard not to commend Sony Mobile for updating many of its mid-range handsets along with their higher-end models. However, Xperia sola and Xperia U owners will rightfully be arguing why they won’t be seeing the update. It’s certainly not a question of hardware specification.

Well, the problem is that unlocked bootloader is an obligatory requirement for using JB custom ROMs. The point of expecting official JB from SONY is because devs. could get official drivers too, so they could cook ROMs for locked and unlocked bootloaders... Or at least that's what I think. There are some people who just can't or don't want to unlock the bootloader, one of them is me.
The reason why I bought a Ray is because I'm (somehow) a SONY fan. In fact, I was going to buy Neo but in the SONY store in my city they didn't have it in stock anymore, so I liked Ray and I got it. Their handsets are beautiful and reliable on their performance. A friend of mine has a Galaxy Ace and that phone is terrible, he has problems with his modem in his house, the phone doesn't connect to it (my Ray does without problems). Plus, no ICS ROMS for it. My business partner has a Samsung Galaxy SII and that piece of s**t is busted, it shows that is charging battery when the phone isn't even plugged! And it doesn't last more than 5 hours...
SONY (and SE) phones have never gave me that kind of problems. But yeah, it's really lame not getting JB, I guess SONY devs weren't smart enough to make project butter to work fine in 2011 line, or it's because all the damn bloatware they want to push affected the performance at the point the phone was a total slowpoke.Or, it's a lame strategy, getting ride of your current device to get a 2012, or even a 2013 one. Whatever is the reason, this is a bad new and a low move from SONY.
Personally, I was going to get Xperia V, but with the rumored prototypes (Odin and Yuga) I'd rather to wait, my Ray still has so much to give and when I get a new phone I want to feel I'm getting a real big upgrade.
Or I dunno, maybe the next Nexus isn't from Samsung anymore... I'd give it a chance
Doesn't matter.... its like we are sticking with a 1ghz phone for a long time since there a cheap dual core phones out there... so I guess its okay and who cares about jb on a 3.3 inch phone

The problem is that custom rom cookers don't have the latest libs for the HDMI and camera, for example, so they can't get them to work properly or at all. And while Sony has released all the libs for the Xperia S to the custom community, they won't do that for the Xperia 2011 line. So, no official nor unofficial solution for getting a 100% usable JB, though the handsets are fully capable of running it even better than ICS.
It's no possible for devs export it from XS?
I think XS will have jellybean or not?
sony must see thread [WIP][ROM][JB 4.1.2][Pa+Aokp+Cm] P.A.C All in 1 ROM !!!!!! Jellybean alpha, its 992 replies and 142.577 views, it's shows how love customers like they device

Maybe it would be easier for you to buy a Sony device. Their mid range phones are excellent value and are not too expensive. It will also help them to stop losing money and support the development of more amazing Sony devices and UI.
Sent from my Xperia Z3
