Knox? What's the big deal? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note 3

So whats the big deal of tripping knox?
I was thinking about it throughout the day and could not come to a conclusion as to why one would want to keep it at 0x0.
My phone is insured with Sprint's monthly insurance plan. If anything goes wrong, I can bring it into Sprint and they will attempt to fix or replace it. So what's the big deal of knox?

They may refuse to service your phone if they so desire but this is dependent on them checking for it and ultimately caring whether or not you have the Knox flag tripped. Personally I'm with you, I could care less and rooted my phone within the first 30 minutes I had it.

I doubt sprint would care. To get this phone I used the new One up program and had to give them back my s3 and it was rooted with a custom ROM on it
Sent from my SM-N900P using Tapatalk 2

I've read several posts where sprint users have sent in their GN3's for various bricks they've caused and not had any issue that they've reported...that I've read at least. I'm not too concerned. If they check and tell me no...I have insurance on it...so I'll just run the *amn thing over with my car and pay the stupid deductible and get a new one in the worse case scenario

If you look up Samsung's KNOX page it seems clear that it is a security feature. Hacked phones could be a vulnerability to a secure business.

I told the sprint guy I rooted my phone when my wife bought hers and when I came in to upgrade mine he didn't hesitate to trade it in. He even asked if it as still rooted. I actually gave it to my daughter instead but he asked if I was going to root my note and I said most likely... He could care less..

Sprint has an "open" policy. We aren't trained to look for root, I can't speak for the techs. But honestly, if your a **** and try to lie to me I'll send you to a tech.. tell me you are rooted and you bricked the phone.. I'll order you another... I bricked my phone and I had mine replaced.. I even told my manager how I bricked it.. most reps don't even know how to get into recovery..
Sent from the phone that says N3!

if you are with sprint, if you read the Sprint TOS that you signed when you got the phone it says that rooting will not void your warranty they just ask that u put it back to stock when upgrading or having service done to it. Who has ever went to upgrade their phone and the rep put it in to download mode to check something like that? And when I had my s2 rooted and needed service on the ear piece I just left cm 10 and all my stuff just the way it was and they never said anything to me about it.

Bricked with 0x0
Sprint refused to service my phone today even with the Knox Flag set as 0x0. I had it stock rom rooted and I was having issues with certain apps. I did a factory reset and still had issues. I tried using Kies to restore and now I have a useless device that says firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies and try again. Does anybody have any suggestions? I took it into Best Buy to a Samsung rep was and he couldn't even fix the issue. Literally want to cancel sprint after this.

Do you have Sprint insurance? Since Sprint wants to be a$$holes two can play at that game. Pull the battery and tell them you lost it. Pay the $200? deductible for a new one and sell the other one on eBay. New phone and make a profit off the screwed up phone. You didn't hear this from me....

The tech looked at picture on the phone (the phone yellow triangle and computer) said it was bricked and I "must have tried to root". He did not even actually look at the phone as the KNOX counter was still 0x0. That store everyone was a POS and just walked off and completely ignored me. I told them too that I had only had the phone for 5 days and they said that they couldn't touch the phone because they would get in trouble with Sprint. So yesterday I took it into another Sprint repair store and they had to add insurance on it for me to swap it out with a new one. Pretty lame but at least I have a phone that works now.

Which puts me correct to say that as long as you have Sprint insurance you should get it replaced if anything happens. So rooting and knox trigger shouldn't matter.

Did you try PC Odin flashing the newly released mj4 full tar.md5? After that finishes, and the phone boots up, do a full factory reset within the phone OS (not in custom or stock recovery). If you can get it into download mode, then you should be able to full flash it back to stock. It won't reset the counter but it should get the phone working.

[Q] Manufacturer vs Assurion warranty

My TB is having charging issues, but since I bought it used I cant take it back to verizon, but I do have Asurion insurance on it...
My question is:
With verizon, they wont accept a return if its been rooted, but how about asurion?
I rooted my phone to try an wipe the battery stats, but it didnt work,
Ive gone back to stock, but cant seem to get S-on again... will they still take the phone?
thanx

this is the method I followed

the first file/image loaded fine, got me back to stock android
but the second image wouldnt load, from HBoot it would say "bypassed"
I have since accepted the OTA so im running build 1.70 now...
can I still try loading the second image (via HBoot) and seeing if it takes it this time, or will it only work while running 1.12 (or was it 1.13)
thanx

Asurion doesn't warranty anything. It's insurance. You're wasting your time, too, because on an insurance claim they don't care if they ever see the phone again. Tell them its currently deep sea diving.
So just tell them its not charging properly, then pay a deductible and they send me a new phone, then send them mine?
(I have an issue with the lying thing, but thanx for the input)
Danny
I doubt they would even ask. I've replaced phones through them 3 times. I would avoid sending them the phone though. Just tell them you aren't able to send it back and leave it at that.

Please help! Trying to unroot EVO with hboot 1.5

Hey everyone. I rooted my friends phone using the HTC unlock method two months ago and put a custom ROM on his phone. His phone is freezing up and his bottom navigation buttons don't work. They should. That is normal for it to say that if you rooted with HTC method. Let me know how it goes.
They should definately fix the phone if its harware is not operating properly as long as you have a protection plan. If they have to replace it, they may try and charge a deductable.
I'm pretty sure Sprint doesn't care if you have rooted your phone if you have the TEP. You will have to pay a deductable if they deem it 'bricked,' though. I've had damaged phones with root worked on before, and I've had Sprint staff tell me that it doesn't matter anymore.
I haven't seen it in any official document, but the employees I have spoken with told me in person.
You might as well just go down to a Sprint store near you and ask them if it matters, it could save you some trouble.

I have talked with the techs at the sprint store there all rooted some of the non tecs could be a ass but I doubt it there cool with root . They will even show you there phone with the ROM there using sometimes.
Also just make sure you don't have that hacked WiFi app on ur phone tho lol.
Sprint changed their policies on rooted phones awhile ago. If the in store person gives you grief then move to another one that's not as dumb.
Thanks everyone, I tried unrooting and it nothing would work, I flashed a stock rooted ROM and deleted the super user app. My friend is getting a replacement Monday

Sprint store repair question

Can I go in and get my phone repaired in the store with my phone being rooted?
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
I always have. If it's a hardware related issue then they usually don't fuss about it.
when i go they dont care but just make sure you have a rom where everything is working
Yeah good call, I always have it on a stock rom when I go in.
Worst thing about doing this is that they could blame your root access for whatever your problem is

Depends on the store, the two I go to never say a word about it. I've read different though.
call the store and ask them. the one by me has no problem with a rooted phone as long as it not a software related issues.

It's in Sprint's policy to work on phones even if they are rooted or unlocked. They are supposed to triage and repair them just as if they were not rooted. Their policy says to warn the customer of the dangers of rooting a phone but to repair it as though it's not rooted.
If a store consultant tries to argue with you, tell them to look at their M&P's regarding repairing rooted/jailbroken phones. If they refuse then ask for a manager or lead consultant and ask them to do it.
As an employee of a Sprint Store, I can tell you that I have no issue servicing rooted phones. Our SAR has given us blanket authority to work on, or if necessary exchange rooted devices. Rooting voids the warranty with the manufacturer, but not with the sprint repair programs.

I'm S-OFF and something weird happened and zeroed out all my mobile network settings, including me ESN/MEID. Would a sprint store even touch this?
You may want to check in the hboot downgrade thread.
Sounds like your file in one of the partitions got corrupted, but you can use a hex editor to restore it with your ESN #'s.
Pretty sure you can fix it, if willing to do the work and ask for help nicely.

I repeat what I said: "It's in Sprint's policy to work on phones even if they are rooted or unlocked. (s-on or s-off doesn't matter. most sprint tech aren't even going to know what that means) They are supposed to triage and repair them just as if they were not rooted. Their policy says to warn the customer of the dangers of rooting a phone but to repair it as though it's not rooted.
"If a store consultant tries to argue with you, tell them to look at their M&P's regarding repairing rooted/jailbroken phones. If they refuse then ask for a manager or lead consultant and ask them to do it."
But I also agree with doitda and that you can probably fix it.

Rooted am I screwed on warranty?

I sent my phone in to Samsung for warranty work (charging port broke) but they wouldn't fixed it because it was rooted. Am I screwed here or can I just unroot and resend it in (and maybe argue with them)?

Don't know about Samsung, but you might be able to contact sprint and have them send a new phone, they might cover it. Samsung will look to see if Knox is tripped but from what I have read from people, more positive than not, sprint could care less if your phone is rooted. To be on the safe side, I would restore to stock if they say you can send it in.

Moved to Q&A. General consensus is Sprint might give some trouble, Asurion claims generally have not.

Failed OTA update

I went to update the S6 Edge + with an OTA update.
The update messed up and the phone reboots a few times then shows recovery mode.
ODIN recognizes the phone but it will not finish a firmware flash. It stops at NAND write start
The Samsung rep at Best Buy tried several times using the software he had available, but he was not able to get it working.
Any ideas?

True. They could see that KNOX isn't tripped so you couldn't have been trying to install a custom OS. If they don't replace it for free I'm going to be surprised.

Im currently on the phone with some foreign country. She keeps telling me that the warranty was up in November, so I had to pay the geek squad to fix it.
She then said I could walk in to the California or New Jersey repair location. I told her that walking 350 miles or 2500 miles was not an option. I asked where to send it and she repeated that I should just take it to the geek squad.
I had to tell her at least 6 times that after 8 hours in Best Buy, the Samsung rep gave up.
I asked for a supervisor and now Im waiting on hold.....

I'm right there with you. My brother's phone failed the last OTA and his is out of warranty. They accused him of trying to root the phone - haha.

Interesting. Good to know, regardless.
I can get to Download Mode, go to Smart Switch and try a recovery but I enter my model number (SM-G928V) and it accepts that... and then it won't accept ANYTHING for an S/N!
What'd you enter for an S/N? I'm not asking for your S/N specifically - I"m just wondering what Smart Switch is demanding.
NOTHING WORKS! I have the original packaging in front of me, I've tried every code on the damn box - I originally thought it was the IMEI but NOPE!
I don't get it! So frustrating! Does anyone think Smart Switch not accepting an S/N has anything to do with the Verizon rep taking my SIM card out of my phone and....keeping it? My brother went back to his old S4 while I tried to fix his S6. It used a different sized SIM card. The fking rep took the S6's SIM card out and kept the damn thing and then put a new SIM card in my brother's S4.
Is the S/N somehow tied to the SIM card and w/o the SIM card Smart Switch doesn't know what's up?
Anyone?

Of course they did. Anything to take the blame off of them. All the carrier can do is update carrier settings and that's it. There's no way the carrier is the one to blame since they have no access to the core system of Android, therefore the only person to blame is Samsung themselves.
