Android 4.4 KitKat? - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

The phrase (or variations of it) "KitKat is slimmed down so it can work on older devices, even some with as little as 512 MB of RAM." keeps getting thrown around. The Evo 4G LTE isn't exactly archaic, and has 1 GB of RAM. Do you think there's a chance that this will get 4.4? Or is HTC done with this phone after our 4.3 rolls out?

In terms of officially coming to the EVO, there are just so many ways to say this - never, not in a million years, absolutely not, no way jose, no chance lance, nuh uh, neinte, zip, zilch, zero chance, and of course my favorite one - man falling off a cliff: NOOOOOOOoooooooooo!....Boom!

We are barely going to get 4.3, and even that isn't official until the day that we download it.

Do you think EVO 4G LTE will (officially) get Android 4.1 "Jellybean" ?

^ see title
Hope so!
As long as there xda there will be jellybean. Look how long it took to get ics. I had ics on my htc sensation a entire year before htc released it.
So if you wait for official release you would be wasting your time if you have the evo. If you want fast updates without flashing roms stick with nexus devices
Sent from my EVO using XDA Premium App
No doubt about it the phone is barely a month old and since 4.1 is looking more like an incremental upgrade I have a feeling it will spread much faster than ics did atleast to ics devices since it doesn't seem like HTC and other manufacturers will need to redo their skins. Just wonder what jellybean will bring to the table its still pretty much a mystery other than the nexus tablet

Wow, I should hope so. I don't think it's if, but when. I'm sure it will drag out longer than any of us think it should.
Yes, but "how long" is the challenge.
It'd be nice if it were independent of carriers/OEMs given its #.1 so its not a major revision.

Yes, but we won't get the new sense 4.6 upgrade, only 4.5 because of some random reason given by HTC to encourage us to purchase a new phone that doesn't have the same inadequacy of hardware
Yes but we probably will miss some features like the evo 4g missed on froyo coming from eclair , but will be ok

There is no doubt that EVO LTE will get Jelly Bean. However, I don't think it'll be til late next spring/early next summer.
Reasoning:
The original EVO 4G was released summer of 2010. It was given Gingerbread AFTER the release of the EVO 3D. I'm intentionally ignoring the FroYo update because it was the first EVO and HTC wanted to keep it current (aka keep it selling) to make the EVO name famous. Clever marketing.
The EVO 3D was released in summer of 2011. Now that the EVO LTE has been released, there's some ICS OTA stuff happening in Europe (meaning it's only a matter of time before the 3vo gets it's ICS).
Thus, the EVO LTE was released summer of 2012. Based on the pattern, the LTE will most likely get official JB after next year's EVO release (if there is one).
Just my thoughts

Doubt it cause Samsung is being aggressive about their push so they probably be agresive on updates too, international GS2 got ICS back in March so that was probably one of the earliest updates with only one device they could make it happen faster, so htc need to make sure they keep it up

The og evo was released with 2.1. Was the first non nexus phone to get 2.2 about a month later. Then got 2.3 a month before the 3d was released (ive owned all the evos since their release) 2.3 to 4.0 was a huge update, 4.0 to 4.1 is not. Im sure we will see 4.1 this year

We got leaks before the EVO 3D release, but we didn't get official until after. I remember, I was there lol.
I'm just going by the update schedule already in place, I could be wrong it seems more likely that Sprint wants to get the next big EVO out for people to buy rather than support the one that's out now.

Why did HTC leave out the EVO LTE when announcing Jellybean upgrades?

“We know HTC fans are excited to get their hands on Google’s latest version of Android. At this point in time, we can confirm that we have plans to upgrade our HTC One X, HTC One XL and HTC One S to Jelly Bean. Please stay tuned for more updates regarding device upgrades, timing and other details about HTC and Jelly Bean.”

I've noticed that the LTE hasn't been getting too much love compare to what the og evo got when it first came out, but it is still a relatively new phone and the first source dropped not too long ago. But personally, there isn't much I don't have with the rooted stock rom right now. I have EOS JB on my Xoom and other than Google Now, not really missing much based on my usage style.

Maybe because HTC has more One X/XL/S/V models sold than Evo 4g lte. Also maybe Sprint never agreed to release JB on the evo 4g lte? I dunno...

the reason why it hasn't been announced is that sprint has partner shop with htc as far as updates goes same reason why the sgsIII received like three updates before we got our first one even tho the evo was put before
Honestly, I don't care. I have a Nexus 7 and it isn't super buttery smooth compared to ICS like the the tech sites are making it out to be. It feels the same to me. Though I feel ICS is as smooth as it gets most of the time anyway except for immediately after unlocking the phone when it has been asleep for awhile. It would be nice to be on the current OS but I don't feel like ICS is a major step back. The notifications of Android 4.1 are nice though.
If Sprint holds true to its past with upgrades we will see it shortly after the next EVO device is launched.
You guys honestly complain so much. What's wrong with the way the phone performs now? Chill out and enough questions about jelly bean. It will come when it comes. This phone is a flagship HTC one X phone for sprint...do you honestly believe we won't get the next one or two (possibly 3) iterations of android?

... it took less than 2 months for the original EVO 4G to updated to Froyo... I'd say that is a better example of Sprint's record with updating a new device, than comparing it to updating devices that are fairly old (the EVO 4G was 6 months old when Gingerbread came out, and was updated about 6 months after that).
They said the One XL will get it, so we can count on the devs to then get it to us from there. No worries.

I'd rather be stuck on ICS forever than have my favorite apps not work properly with JB.
Yes i know its "almost the same" but almost doesn't mean it is. I tried apex on a JB build and it wouldn't even start, so either that build is missing something or its not as almost as everyone makes it out to be.

LTE owners should view this as if they were installing a cumulative Windows Update patch, like SP1, which will fix things... And break things... Such as backwards compatibility with apps.
However, with that being said, I'll be flashing Jelly Bean the same second it is released. CM10 AOSP, where are you?

Your device is running Android 4.0.3 (ICS) You can read about what version it's running from the settings>about menu. Android code names can be read from Google or Wikipedia. There are plenty of reasons the GS3 seems 'cooler' but only you can decide which you'd rather have, as they both run radically different UI overlays, even though they're running roughly the same version of Android (GS3: 4.0.4). Your EVO LTE is fully capable of running Jelly Bean officially. However, there are currently no stable daily driver worthy Jelly Bean custom ROMs available. As for an update to Jelly Bean? Only HTC and Sprint know the answers to that, but I assume like all the other EVOs, it will survive an update to at least one higher Android version, Jelly Bean being that version. When? I wouldn't expect one for quite a while. Your 4G icon was indeed LTE, because your phone does not have a WiMAX radio and the icon you saw is precisely what you should be seeing.

Yeah it's Ics 4.0.3 but themed a lot by sense and literally what your looking for spec wise I think it's exactly like the s3 spec wise IMHO, and I had the s3 returned it to get the EVO because the s3 physical build quality suck, I can't deal with the plastic and if you think the s 3 Is cool go and get that you have 14 days til you get charged a other activation fee or 30 days in most store its honestly your opinion both are great phones literally I view them as the same except one HTC one Samsung, HTC just caters to the features I like the camera is amazing and dedicated button also plus lcd is better on my eyes and I like the color better not so saturated.
And yes of course the phone can run jelly bean there's unofficial roms that work really good and as for a official update who knows lte hasn't been getting so much love I remember reading a article where sprint or HTC forgot which got bashed on for not advertising it and blaming as that's the reason it failed mainstream ( that's why you see a lot more EVO commercials now if you haven't noticed), but either way we will be getting a 100% working jelly bean one way or the other.
And for the icon I wouldn't know but common sense would say it's the because I don't remember this phone supporting 4G wimax
So dude its your decision ones really mainstream the other is like it's neglected twin both are the same one just got advertised well and at the same time doesn't change the hardware though so have fun contemplating.....
Fyi most of this is my humble opinion the rest is common sense read the forums posts and relax dude its a phone........ and heck I didn't even know there was a jelly bean port until after 2 weeks I dived into some old title post but frequently posted on.... Learned a lot that day Haha

EvoLTE:
better screen
better camera (pictures)
better UI
kickstand/physical camera button
GSIII
better external speaker
bigger screen ( you can really tell a difference when they are side by side )
2gigs of ram
But really both still have the small lag problems. With the EvoLTE having less lag and I don't see this problem being fixed without JB or a custom rom..
also battery life on both are about the same..

I think there is at least an attempt to give one Android update. If you are lucky you get 2. What I mean is aside from security or "fix" updates you will get an Android level update. For instance the Thunderbolt, shipped with 2.2, got an update to 2.3, was lucky to get one to 4.0. Rezound, shipped with 2.3, got an update to 4.0. Now the DNA, shipped with 4.1, should get a 4.2 update. Doubtful it will get a 4.3 (or 5.0) update, but possible. This is just from my experience and observations.

I think HTC will make 2 updates for the GLOBAL DNA phone and possibly one for Verizon, but Verizon will only officially put out 1 update IMO. They won't sink any more $$ into the DNA. But that doesn't matter since as long as the GLOBAL version exists, Verizon users will get theirs. After Moonshine, how can we not believe our DEV can do anything. The only thing that would hurt this phone is if Beaups leaves the DNA community. I've seen where just one strong dev left the community for my phone and the phone support practically all but dried up. He seems to be the king of the DNA. As long as he supports it, we'll be fine.

Somewhat related question. I recently moonshined and now have all the s-off goodness that comes along with it (still on stock ROM minus bloat). Question is, when Verizon starts pushing the next software update, do I need to worry about my phone trying to accept it? Does the customized hboot preclude us moonshiners from getting the update?

Do you have a custom recovery installed. At the least I believe (and its been a while since I go an update on the phone with a custom recovery) that the recovery will not automatically install it. But I think there should be something you can freeze or remove that would prevent the OTA.
The HTC rep I talked to yesterday claimed thatthe DNA is HTCs favorite device. Even more favored than the One. He also claimed that the DNA, for that reason, will be supported with various updates for years to come....carrier permitting.

There's no reason it shouldn't get updated. It's still quite new, and hardware is top notch. Now when? Who frigging knows! Verizon hates it's customers.

It does have the hardware and specs. Take Verizon out of the picture and this phone would already be on sense 5 (maybe not 4.2.2 yet). I think once the HTC One drops on Verizon it won't be long before the DNA gets it. Kinda funny Verizon is the last major carrier to get the HTC One and S4. They gotta get their dirty little fingers in there first, just so beaups, adamoutler and crew tell them to suck it.
Honestly, the ONLY thing I like about Verizon is there data speeds. Other wise I'd never of jumped ship from sprint.

I am with Verizon for the Coverage and my unlimited data. If they took that away I think I would go to At&t, they are close in coverage and we have LTE here.

I or my girlfriend have had every major carrier minus Sprint over the last year+ and Verizon was hands down the fastest and most reliable. AT&T's LTE is a joke.

Let's get the facts straight, it was just shy of 2 years from the phone getting introduced that it got ICS (Intro March 2011, ICS Feb 2013). Yes it was after the phone was EOL, but at least they did it.

Yep, that was exactly my point. We might not see a TIMELY update, but I am sure we will see one eventually.
TBH, if one is running the stock ROM, they are so far from stock Android it isn't funny anyways. I actually prefer Sense 4+ to Sense 5, HATE how they took away the animated lockscreen weather.

I'm a born again noon I guess..

Having the damnest time getting the WiFi hotspot going again. I'm running sinner LTE 1.0. Kernal [email protected]#1 SMP preempt. Baseband is 1.13.11.0830
Build number 1.29.709.4 CL 165408 release-keys..
I have tried to get captains 4.3 but I can never get the hboot and recovery to upgrade and stay.. I feel like such a noob.. I should've rooted this phone before sprint got greedy

Nothing, if you are not in an LTE area. Not sure if that is the question being asked.
And...I'm not sure what you mean by the Hboot not staying. The firmware seems to have flashed just fine, since you have the latest radios.

If you want to be technical, he has the firmware from the 3.17 update, not 4.3. But that's another issue in and of itself.

If you're S-off, just run the 4.3 RUU. Afterwards you can install a custom recovery again and flash SuperSU. Then you can flash Captain's ROM or whatever else you'd like so long as it's based on the new layout.

Yeah I've been rooting since my Inspire on at&t. Then the HTC vivid... Then in switched to sprint.. Got a galaxy 2 which was almost as bad as the iPhone 3g from years ago. I finally got the evolte.. I didn't root it soon enough so now I'm paying the price. I'll flash the 4.3 then the recovery and hboot?

To a couple of tries with rumrunner too the the other day when I unlocked rooted. Thanks for yalls help... Trust me when I say I did research before asking for help, installing a nexus 7 second gen as my head unit.. Need phone for WiFi.. But I'll have 5.1 surround sound in my my truck .. Via audio splitter from the HDMI, run digital fiber to the surround sound decoder that has 6 rca out puts that runbto the amps .. Hell yeah! Pluss the HDMI audio extractor has an HDMI out.. So I can run extra screens or a projector to a personal drive in experience
