You had the option to add it during the online activation or phone activation. I also hope people remembered to save that 6 digit password they gave you in the activation. That was your MSL code.

Yup aka Insurance/in store repairs. $100 deductible on any insurance claim, and no charge for any repairs or replacements if it's not an insurance claim.

Really when I confirmed my plan it showed me that as an option to uncheck. Mine was already checked cuz I had it on for my Evo.
mine is still on my account, no changes.

Maybe you were so excited while activating it. For me it was on the screen that had the $10 Premium Data charge. There were other items you could have added at that time including the Sprint roadside assistance and some other stuff.
I think it's good you pointed this out, as for any high end phone I think it's money well spent.
Plus one advantage to TEP over manufacturer warranty is you never have to hear Sprint say, we need to have HTC take care of this.
i dont understand why anyone would want TEP. i mean the phone is under warranty for 1 year, after 1 year you'll prolly get a new phone anyways. if you wait until your 2 year contract then its a little under $200 and you can get a new phone when your 2 year contract is up.
Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't the warranty just cover device defect? The TEP covers if you throw the phone into the Pacific. When I find out it can't be rooted, for instance.

That shows the difference. You get more service from Sprint themselves if you have TEP, otherwise your warranty is with HTC not Sprint so it takes longer to get taken care of.

TEP covers a lot more than warranty items. Warranty is manufacture defects not dropping your phone in the toilet, running it over with your car, dropping it on the pavement, or having it stolen. Good luck getting a new phone under any of those conditions. You will be out $600 bucks. Plus with TEP (@$100.00) I will get a replacement phone the next business day.

$100 is still cheaper than the $549 you need to buy a new evo outright.
I just dumped mine on my evo3D. I have had TEP for a long time (since TP1) & have used it once. A long time ago I dropped my original evo off my desk and it broke. If you consider all the monthly premiums I have paid & the deductible I'm down on the deal.
TEP is increasing from $8 to $11 (a 37.5% increase) starting June 17th for all new LTE devices MSRP $549.99+ which would include the evo LTE. On top of that, deductible is rising to $150 or $200 a whopping 100% increase over the previous deductible.
Those increases are absolutely outrageous. Wasn't the evo 3D $499 off contract when it came out? So this is $50 more and they are doubling the deductible along with a 37%+ increase? You are way better off buying a phone off eBay or craigslist. I guess when the phone is brand new but within a few months prices usually come down.
Anyway I dumped mine just seeing how many of you are planning on keeping it. I may have considered keeping it if the deductible stayed the same but doubling? No thanks Are you guys keeping it?
btw here is the article LINKY
I'm pretty careful with my phone, obviously an accident can happen at anytime but I have an office job so it's on my desk all day. I didn't really think it was the best value before the price increase but now it just seems like a complete joke.
Thank you Mathman for an outstanding write up on the math behind TEP - Everyone should read this post here.

I reluctantly kept mine just in case I bricked my phone.

Definitely dumping my TEP, I've never had a reason to use it as I've always been safe with my phones. Keeping my old EVO as a backup.
i never had tep on my evo tho i thought i did until i broke it.. then man i missed having it.. so i will be keeping mine.. insurance is always a gamble but id rather pay for peace of mind then pay for a new phone or go back to my junk one

I will be keeping mine for the same reason. I have never had to use it in my time with sprint or even come to think of it maybe even in all my time with Alltel & Verizon too. But it is that if I ever need it. It is there.

Didn't realize they were doubling the deductible that's just ridiculous -_- are there any good alternatives to this insurance? Would cancel but they kinda got us if there's no reasonable alternative...

Bestbuy and SquareTrade are two other alternatives but, neither of them cover loss or theft.

So the Sprint warranty is essentially you making a $464 bet that you'll break your $550 phone over the next 2 years for a reason outside of the 12 month manufacture warranty coverage. Add in the variable of the price of the phone dropping after year 1, and it's a losing bet.
With squaretrade(who I currently use for my old EVO), it's a $225 bet of breaking your $550 phone over 2 years.
Bestbuy insurance just sucks from what I've read.
So... Think I'm skipping it.
The way I am with stuff, I need all the safety nets I can get. I just recently had my Evo 4g sink to the bottom of a lake.
With that being said, I'll probably cancel the insurance after a year and if something happens just be forced to do an early upgrade.

So you're going to lay down a $332 bet on a $550 phone breaking over the next 12 months?
Take your $332 to vegas and bet on Red. You'll make more money.
If you kill your phone, the payout is $220($550-$332). If you went to vegas with your bet, the payout would be 100%($332).
To protect against loss or theft you may want to add it to your insurance. I keep a personal articles policy for my photography equipment, laptop, and a few other items. I've place phones on the policy in the past.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA
Expanding on my point....
If your phone ever breaks, don't think of it as you're having to shell out $550.
Think of it as you've already saved $464 of the cost. You're only paying $85 extra for you losing your bet.
In other words, to make it more clear, it cost you $85 more to break your phone w/o insurance than with. That's it.
The question with insurance is, are you really going to drop down $264($11/month) to maybe save $85 one day?
one thing you guys aren't thinking about...what if you have to replace the phone more than once in those two years?
i've had to replace my wife's phone 6 times in the past two years with out paying a deductible any of the times....do the math on replacing multiple times
me personally all the kernel developing and flashing i haven't had to use TEP for my line but having it on both lines and replacing her phone 6 times made it well worth it on both lines

I've had 7 EVO's in 2 years so I have definitely used me tep. I recently found out that you can downgrade your protection to not include accidents or theft. So essentially normal wear and tear and sprint store support. I may go with this option since none of the times I replaced mine had to go through assurant.

that is true and a valid option...most people don't know tep is actually 2 different charges
Haven't had one of these policies in the last 5 years on any phone owned. If you're prone to dropping/damaging your device, then by all means get it. For me it would just be wasted money.
I'll take the risk. If something should happen, I'll buy a used one from ebay or similar.

Dumped it a long time ago. Keeping the OG Evo as a backup to the EVO LTE.
I have to wait a little while until my current contract with Sprint is up before getting the Evo LTE. But I see them on ebay for about the same money as one would cost me in the store once I'm upgrade elegible. I'm wondering how the ebay phone process works to get it working on the Sprint network? I've only bought phones from Sprint and BB in the past. I know I need a clean ESN, but what I'm wondering is about activation and insurance. Does it cost me money to activate an ebay phone or can I just do it through the website tools? Is it possible to get insurance for the phone (aftermarket I'd assume)? If so, who do you recommend? Anything else to know about getting it working?

just tell them to turn on the insurance when you activate or they will "forget" to say anything. I bought an OG EVO from e-bay as long as the seller is reputable you will be ok.
I think that technically there's an activation fee, but from what I've seen before it's not that hard to bypass. If you're finding a phone on ebay that costs the same as the subsidized price, then I'd think very hard about what I was doing. These phones are normally 2-4x the price you pay when you get a subsidy; you're putting yourself up for some real risk if an unsubsidized phone costs as little as a subsidized new phone.
If you do buy it though and it does turn out to be a clean ESN/MEID, then first off congrats since you just dodged a massive bullet and saved tons of money, but also go and sign up for TEP, at least for a few months. The only reason I recommend this is because I'm still not 100% sure that the great deal you got is without a hidden problem that could jump out at you and eat your savings.

Plus one for hidden issues/bad ESN.
I would seriously question an EVO on the second hand market for $200-300

We're definitely on the same page as far as second-hand devices go. That said, I would love clarification on the fee for hidden issues. It's not something I've ever heard of. I've seen them go for 300-350 but less than that is a bad phone
Thanks for the input so far. I don't think I can get TEP from Sprint on a phone I did not buy from them. I've found SquareTrade offers a warranty, though. We have used them before, so that is probably the way I'd go there.
There are a lot of these phones on ebay for under $250 right now. I figure $250 is about the break even point when I include the activiation fee and almot 10% sales tax we pay around here. I can't imagine they are all scams. I appreciate the concern, though.

Cool. Good to know.
I look at Craigslist and Ebay almost daily to see what they're selling for. I have one and also the GSIII. One must go soon and if its the EVO, I don't think I'll get more than $300 for it. Some are selling brand new EVO's, well suppose to be, for $250 on CL. My opinion, which means nothing, thinks that maybe the EVO has a bad reputation right now from the people that swapped them out for the GSIII. Not sure.
Seems like the S3's are going for much more money. Could be it's because they work for every carrier?

one time i bricked a device and the guy i originally bot it from was able to fix it for a small fee.
The activation fee is only on new phones. It is only when the esn is first activated on sprint. So if I bought a new phone and activated the esn but left it new in box and then sold it to you there'd be no activation fee as the esn was already in sprints system

I have Squaretrade for my wifes S3. They are cheaper, especially with discount codes, but they are also $99 deductible but they require you to send in the phone for repair, no swap. Turn around on my wifes S3 for cracked screen was about 5-6 days from when we sent it in.
Personally, I just started hanging on to my previous old phone for insurance.
last september i left my phone ontop of my dads car and forgot it up there. found it a few blocks away, screen smashed but it still turned on, was able to save all my **** off it.
called them up around 8pm EST, by 10am the next day there was a brand new nexus at my door. cost me $100 but for the service, speed and the replacement it was worth it.
Verizon's insurance is **** in my opinion who wants to pay $99 to replace a broken phone and they will only replace it 2-3 times. So I went and got mine through Best Buy and pay for their replacement plan which is like 10$ a month and there is no deductible if you break and need your phone replaced. So Im sorry for whoever has to pay that lol

for the $72 difference over 2 year cost ill take the verizon insurance. Unlike best buy I get a BRAND new phone, not a refurb. best buy also doesn't cover lost or stolen devices. I also get the phone either next day or 2 day, best buy cant beat that. I do not trust the quality of refurbs that get put into the best buy system. I use to work for best buy in the geek squad and we handled the insurance exchanges, i do not have a good taste in my mouth from them. I'd get refurb backs that had issues right out of the box, had slight wear. I rather pay the $100, even though its few and very far between to get the phone replaced. the first year you are covered by manufactures warranty so why bother.

They are correct, it is $100. Just added the insurance on both of my lines.
I bought the Square Deal insurance through Costco, $99 total for 2 years, and only $25 co-pay for up to four claims. Usually overnight replacement.
After deciding that I wanted to make the jump from my 5X to the 6P, I spent some time trying to figure out if it made more sense to go directly through Google or through BestBuy, instead. While in the store, I stumbled across what appears to be a big advantage to buying the phone at BestBuy over ordering from Google with Nexus Protect. If you purchase BestBuy's 1 year $99 accidental damage protection plan, they will replace your damaged phone with absolutely no deductible. Meanwhile, Nexus Protect requires a $79 deductible for replacement.
The mobile department sales person and I stumbled across this when I asked for the details on their damage replacement plan. When she said there was $0 deductible, I figured that was just too good to be true. She pointed out that when a phone is purchased through a carrier the T&C's stipulate a $70 - $199 deductible, depending on the price of the phone. However, she said that this did not apply to unlocked phones and said that instead, they are considered the same as an "appliance or TV". The replacement plans on appliances or TV's don't require a deductible for replacement. We pulled in a manager who agreed that there is no deductible on unlocked phones.
Now, we all know that retail stores are great about making promises they don't intend to keep and then changing their tone when push comes to shove, so take this with a grain of salt. With that said, the manager assured me that if I came in with a broken phone, they would replace it with the exact same phone/SKU at no additional cost and gave me his cell number to use in case I find myself in that position and run into any issues while he isn't there.
Here's a breakdown of the difference between BestBuy's damaged device replacement plan and Google's "Nexus Protect" plan:
Nexus Protect:
- $89 up front cost
- $79 deductible
- Overnight replacement
- 2 year plan
BestBuy Replacement Plan:
- $99 up front cost
- $0 deductible
- Replacement provided same day or shipped to you within 1-2 business days, if out of stock
- 1 year plan
I figured I'd share this information for anyone who may also be figuring out the best purchase method with the intent on getting accidental damage covered. Do with the info as you will.
Nexus Protect:
- $89 up front cost
- $79 deductible
- Overnight replacement
-2 year plan
BestBuy Replacement Plan:
- $99 up front cost
- $0 deductible
- Replacement provided same day or shipped to you within 1-2 business days, if out of stock
-1 year plan
Fixed it for you.
Blah! I meant to add that. Thanks for adding it in. The 2 year plan will be a deal maker for some. Others, like myself, only keep a phone for a maximum of 12 months before changing to something different, so the 2 year plan isn't a selling point for me.
Also you left a big part out Best Buy won't cover LOST OR STOLEN DEVICES!

Neither of them will. Thats an interesting plan though. I still prefer google for customer service if something goes defective. but this makes it a much closer choice especially because you can buy the device in store and potentially take advantage of in store deals.

Well, Mr. "smokezalot", maybe you should lay off the pot. Nexus Protect doesn't cover this either.

Yeah, Google's customer service has always been great. But the idea of just taking the device to the store, 15 minutes away and potentially getting a replacement the same day, is quite appealing.
Fully agree. If you have a store with good staff and good management, take advantage of it.

This is BEST BUY we're talking about, right?
The one thing that is missed is that Nexus Protect is a better plan since the up front cost is lower AND it covers for two years.
In year #2 what do you do with the BB plan?
Cost is only lower if you never have to use it. If you need to do a claim Nexus protect loses because of the deductible. Year 2 may be irrelevant as OP doesn't seem to care to keep their device past one. I personally got it thinking year two would be a good selling point when I sell the device and could bump the price up a bit.

Yup
I was speaking to sn0warmys point about him having a good relationship with the people at his location. That helps.
In general I'm weary of BB staff as a lot of them don't have good product training so a warranty return can come with quite the hassle.

If you CAN'T get extra when you sell it, or lose it, or don't care, you can get a pro-rata refund if you cancel it (as long as there have been no claims).

How many replacements do you get in that year? With Nexus protect you get 2 a year so up to 4 over the two years.
I don't think so. I think Nexus Protect is 2 replacements over 2 years.
