Could anyone help steer me towards a solution please?
Or tell me if its impossible (and why).
I am trying to put together a script of some kind which I can use to do a basic rebuild of my Archos 70 after I have done a Full Reinitialization. I like to mess around installing all sorts of stuff, but when done, it's nice to reset and go
back to a clean machine.
As it's not rooted (yet?) I generally rebuild manually which takes ages.
Although a relative newbie at Android/Linux, I have worked with scripting
on mainframes and in the Windoze arena for many years.
The scripting requirement is quite simple, namely to install packages one by one from the SD card. Also to copy back Bookmarks, launcher setting etc
I am happy to work in any language which will work, but to date have just been trying with .SL (Bash?) scripts which run quite happily from within the SL4A environment or according to my theory, should work also from Android natively.
I envisage the script residing on the SD card and when invoked installing my launcher, Dolphin Browser, various other apps and games, then copying back the settings which I have saved (also by script) before the Initialisation.
Trouble is, I can find no simple samples which help. When I try, I can 'cp' stuff about and echo messages etc, but when I try to install, I don't really know where to start. I have tried just the name of the app package
'/sdcard/sdcard/packagename.apk', it replies 'permission denied' and if I try 'sudo package.apk', it says 'not found'.
I am assuming that the 'permission denied' is a good sign because it understands what I'm trying to do at least. But if I am allowed to do it myself, then surely my script should be allowed to do it?
I am quite happy messing around myself. But if anyone has any pointers
(sample scripts, which language/environment to use, etc.) I would be most grateful.
Sorry if this is covered elsewhere. I have searched but was unable to find much which helped. I am continuing the search!

Thanks for your reply fzelle, but I'm not sure as to whether I may have explained it properly.
I am running 'Quick System Info' which is great, and it has a function to backup all the installed apps to a directory you can get at without root access. From there I have copied them onto the SD card.
I am not just trying to copy them into the working directory.
If I click on an app, it lets me install it without any problem.
I am trying to automate that part of the process, and I need the name of the software which does the installation, and how to actually give it the parameters for it to do the install. Although a Linux newbie, I don't really understand why, if I am allowed to install apps myself,
a script that I run should not be allowed to install them also?
Anyone got any ideas please?

No, i didn't understand you wrong.
You want to automate the installation of your std programs, and that normaly doesn't only include the apk but also the private Data.
And if you manually want to install this, you need root to be able to write in /data/data
If you just want to Backup/Install the apps, use appSaver from the market.
That has allready everything you need, and doesn't need root.

Not entirely true.
I have some SSH tunnels set up on my rooted phone that use keys and a shell script to launch them, all set up with Better Terminal Emulator. The key and script files are located under /data/data/com.magicandroidapps.bettertempro/home. I wanted to use the same keys and script on my A70, so I copied the files from my phone to the same directory on my A70 using the terminal command line. Although you can't browse to the app folders under /data/data/, there is some ability to copy stuff into them. I guess the trick is knowing what and to where.
I've not used appsaver, but Astro will also let you back up and reinstall your apps all at once.

It basically gives your phone permission to do almost anything. It is similar to giving a user in Windows Administrator rights. It is called super user. You can do many things such as removing unwanted apps and overclocking.
This is not what I mean, I asks for an explaining in which the question is "How the root is possible? What active the root ?" Probably a kernel exploit, or stuff like that, to understand the underground passage to take it, from an hack view.
So, How works a root utility (such SuperOneClick) to set gid to 0 ?
Valid question, I am also interested in learning this.
In other words, if I were to perform the rooting manually, where can I find such info?
And some of the question is why su must be in some diredctories, and can't be run from /data/local/tmp for example?

The general approach is taking advantage of bugs in the android OS
The process works something like this
User crafts some special data that contains a "payload" (the script/executable that we want to run)
User runs a system process that has root privileges and gets it to open the special data
The bug causes the system process to get confused by the data, and ends up running the embedded script
The embedded script runs with the same privileges as the system process, and thus can stuff that normal users aren't allowed to do (e.g. installs the SU app)
Commonly, things such as buffer overflows are used

It looks like we have to move our discussion here, so I went ahead and started a thread.
As of now, there is root for the mediapad, but the only way to root the springboard is by flashing it with a rooted mediapad cust.img - which gives you root but loses your 4g.
So for us Springboard users, we either need root or a way to get 4g back if flashing it as a mediapad. Anybody with thoughts or leads or any know-how?

I powered off the device. Put my sdCard back in (the rooted firmware was removed from it). Then installed the SuperUser update from the market.
Ran that - it said everything was OK. Then I forced it to update - it crashed - so I force closed it. I then realized I could not run the original SuperUser app anymore.
Next, I opened up Root Explorer and was able to move the su file over to the xbin. But now BusyBox is not acting right - It said that it was having problems installing, and I'd need to reflash (or reload - I can't recall) the rom.
I'm rebooting, and going to try to install BusyBox....to be clear on which BusyBox..it's this one:

Just realized in Root Explorer, to tap the little gray box at the top. After you tap it it should read "Mount R/O"
Now you can long press a folder/file and change the read/write permission.

You said to r/w enabled the su file....is that check ALL the boxes?...Read, Write, Execute Special?????
IIRC, i had some problems with busybox, too. Copy the file from the attachment to /system/xbin and try the installer again.
And i said to enable r/w support for the /system folder. There are two checkboxes in ES File Explorer. First checkbox is enable root permission for ES File Explorer and second checkbox is "Mount / and /system writable".
Now you should be able to copy whatever file you want to /system/xbin. That's how i have done it. If you have any further questions, feel free to ask. I'll try to explain.
PS. You don't ne to alter file permissions of the su-binary but mine are "rwx r-x r-x".
Rumbi, how do you feel about the High resloution mode, does it slow the tablet down? Have you had a chance to use any tegra 2 devices and if so how does the mediapad with the snapdragon compare when in standerd/high-res mode?
Nothing to complain about the Hi-Res-Mode but i don't have any Tegra2-Devices to compare, sorry.
Haven't tried any games in hi-res-mode but normal usage is just fine.

Heres how i got root (im away from my pc right now so i try to be as accurate as possible) :
Installed Hauwei modified rom (its the one that says "(root) " in the file name.
Installed Root explorer
Installed Superuser
Install busybox
Install Connectbot
Put my microsd back in (with the firmware AKA dloa folder removed)
I could not get root explorer to allow rw permissions until i slid the sd card out and back in whil the device was on.
Then i ran connectbot as local and typed su hit enter then superuser popped up asking fo allow connectbot to access. Hit allow an type su hit enter an you should get # This took 3 reinstalls of the firmware to work wjthout errors. The first times resulted in superuser needing to be force closed.
I also ran superuser and went into settings and updated it eventhouh its not neede. There i got a read out saying that busybox is not installed, but it does say i have root.

Honestly i havent noticed a big difference between high resolution an standard.
The only issue with high res is the small icons and buttons are difficult to hit sometimes

I installed busybox installer by JRummy16. This time and it worked!!!!!!!
Now its on to figuring out 4G and tryiying to use it as a phone.

Good, that you have worked it out now What exactly do you want to do? To get to the hidden menu, you have to open the calculator and type: ()()2846579()()=
To edit the XML-Files, you have to extract the cust.img... But now that you have root, yo can edit whatever is available via root explorer
€dit: To get 4G working again, maybe with someone with an original Springboard (not a flashed one) can copy the folder /system/lib/. This should be possible even without root. I think it has something to do with the ril-files...
after updating my mediapad to S301uV100R001C232B012, i have problem with 2x Client (RDP client) now, few second after conecting to rdp session, is app 2X client crashing, with error 2x Client has stopped unexpectedly (process com.tux.client), is here anybody with this problem? thanks...

On an off-root topic - How do you take a screen cap? I accidentally did it yesterday while my MediaPad was lagging, but don't know how I did it.
The Hi Suite that comes with the device can do this, but require a computer and usb hooked up. Useful, but not as practical as doing it from the tablet itself.
The *.so files are a bit like drivers for the internal components. I'll try to find differences between T-Mobile and Huawei so maybe we get 4G working again.

I'm not sure how to screencap. It's so easy on CM that I've gotten lazy. Plus I rarely do it. I know there are a ton of apps for that, tho. But you could probably google "gingerbread screen capture" and find a better answer. But not with gingerbread. I'm blanking on the name for this version of android.

Android natively supports the ability to capture a screenshot by method of pressing both the power and volume-down buttons at the same time on an Android device. This native support was first included within the Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) update, which is first seen on the Galaxy Nexus smartphone.[86] Previously, Android did not feature native support for screen capturing which would have likely been due to security concerns. Furthermore, prior manufacturer and third-party customizations as well as using a PC connection (DDMS developer's tool) were the only known methods of capturing a screenshot on Android.
I've looked through the *.so files and many of them are exactly the same, but some are different. One file caught my interest. I've attached it here for anyone who wants to try. Please only use it, if you have a T-Mobile Springboard with flashed root Firmware. Copy the content of the zip-file to /system/lib and overwrite the existing file. But make a backup first! After copying you have to set the correct file permission (rw- r-- r--) and reboot the tab. Hopefully 4G works again with this little trick.

"Invalid download uri" is a bad ass error that is the biggest flaw (IMHO) You can encounter. Solutions are (as far as I can tell):
- cache clear
- factory reset
But for those, who did this and still have the same problem (or don't wanna try the factory reset) there might be some hope. (I was searching for solutions and found none like this, so I hope I don't duplicate someone's ideas)
I was fighting with this for a longer time and I guess I finally managed to fix it. I tried to clear cache, Google Store and Services, I even removed and reinstalled Google Play. But as logcat said, there was still problem with access to the file that was downloaded (something about JaveException:FileAccessInvalid - or something similar).
So, to make the long story short:
- connect phone
- adb shell
- cd /data/data/com.android.providers.downloads
- ls -al
There should be 4 directories:
- one of them (install) is a link (not visible in CM File Manager, but visible in shell)
- app_sslcache, cache, databases
Those three should have similar attributes (drwxrwx--x), in my case, cache had ony drwx--x--x.
So an easy fix: chmod 771 cache (You should be root) and voila, everything works (You don't need reboot or to stop google play or anything) and no more "invalid download uri".
Please, if You have this problem try this fix and if it works for You, let others know (maybe even in the comment section below)...
PS: It's not dangerous, but anyway... You do this at Your own risk.

Thank you, for the inspiration, by looking at the logs, it was some permission pbl in com.android.vending and after some try, it was com.android.vending itself that was with bad permission.

Must be the "new" Android version... I don't have enough info to help You. the pesmissions are correct. That "d" in the beginning says it's a directory. After that there are rwx (means: Read, Write, eXecute) three times. These permissions are for Owner, Group and Others. That means the owner (the app that created this directory/file) should have full rights:rwx. He can read, write and execute the file/directory. Group is just a group of owners that can share some data. Like, You can put pictures into a directory and have all apps in group "viewers" access them. And then Others. Others are all other apps that are there. So basically drwxrwxrwx means anyone can do anything with that file/directory. drwx------ means only the owner has full access, all others cannot do anything. That's the permission system in linux/android in a really really fast lesson.
Now what You need to do is to find where S5 puts the things it downloads from App Store. Maybe You are missing that folder I have found. Dunno. Try to google it out and maybe someone can help You better. Or try to find it Yourself.
What I would do is to connect S5 with a cable to a PC, run adb shell logcat and then I would try to install something from the App Store. You will see all that crap that's going on and if there will be an error, You can see it, read it, think about it and solve it

Thank you very much for super fast response. BTW, besides this post about 'invalid dowload url' problem there is nothing on the net, not one single word. I resolved my issue with reseting my phone and everything is fine now(it was easy since I have back up of everything). Will re search more and let you know if find any answers. Anyway, was looking at permissions in same folder after reseting my phone and everything is same as before but works. Thank you again, for your effort.

Try without an SD card in your device.
I don't have install in either place (com.android.provides.downloads or com.android.vending) on my PadFone X and keep running into this issue
EDIT: In my case it won't download the whole app.
EDIT: Downgrading Play Store fixed it!

I didn't try changing permissions but just cleared the Download Manager data and it did work
Did this with Root Explorer, just want to mention, permission 771 should be granted not only for cache folder, but to every sub-folder.

Just a quick note: Noticed this error after installing the Xposed Module "Root Cloak". Since this error only showed up for root apps I figured that was the problem. Was able to update (TiBU and Greenify) by disabling Root Cloak - rebooting - updating - re-enabling Root Cloak.
Not sure what item I added to Root Cloak that is causing this issue, but for now this "solved" the problem for me.

Dead or not I have ran into the exact same thing twice. First time was right after root cloak, and this time its been a while. That and a bad memory had me end up here. Root Cloak or not a simple fix permissions in something as old as ROM Manager or just do it in custom recovery fixed it for me. Android 4.3. Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 rooted stock with multi user. I note multi user because it has also caused me some grief due to knox magically appearing in the second user even though completely removed from ROM and also must enable multi user root in supersu. Thanks for making me chase permissions instead of go after the old sd card mount issues.

Solution to "Invalid download URI."
After some time of troubleshooting this issue, and performing all the previously recommended steps, we believe we found a really easy solution. In fact, I feel really frustrated that I didn't do this to begin with, but hey, live and learn.
This solution will typically work for folks who are getting this on almost every app, with a few exceptions. You may notice that some apps will install while others throw this "Invalid download URI." When an app is downloaded, the installer will then look to see where the app wants to install. Most of the time, these apps request to use the "SD Card" mount point. On most Android devices, even if you do not have a SD card installed, you will still have a SD Card mount point, which simply points to another location within the phones storage. It turns out that in this case, the S4 we were working on, had a SD card installed, but it was defective. So the installer would attempt to perform the installation step, but since the SD card wasn't responding appropriately, we would get this "Invalid download URI" error. After the card was removed, the Play store began functioning normally and apps would install without any issues.
Hopefully this helps everyone who had no success with the cache clearing and permission change solutions.
I wanna bump this to say thanks to the op and xda in general I been fighting with the aopen Opensign tablet10s that uses some hacked apon version of ics trying to get gapps working this thread was the final piece of the puzzle

I know its only been out a short while and isn't anything to shake a stick at, however I believe that the ability to root and install custom ROMs on this device would allow it to run much smoother even with the low grade hardware.
Anyhow if anyone is willing to look into rooting I would be appreciative. I did find something where a fella tried kingoroot, towelroot, and one other method which apparently worked on the ellipsis 7, but had no success. If anyone else is in favor reply and let's get some attention. Thanks XDA.

It's a real shame that no one's done this. There are guys, here, that write whole ROMs for tablets they don't even own and no one's taken a shot at a root. Not being a coder, i can't but there are so many talented guys here i'm just really surprised someone didn't lean over, fart, and put out a root. lol.
Just no real demand for it for these tablets.
Verizon is charging more for these than what you would pay for a MUCH better tablet like a Nexus 7, or Gpad 8.3, etc...
The only people that are "buying" them, are the ones that VZW is giving away for free with you upgrade your phone and add the tablet to your data plan for $10 a month. If not for them giving them away for free, nobody would have one.
I'm stuck with a nexus 8 and require root.
the latest update was forced and now hundreds of my apps will not work due to not being allowed to change sd card files. Root for me is not cool or optional.

For 1, I cannot imagine even having hundreds of apps... But the update was a small one, nothing significant, and I don't see why they would have stopped working?
Disabling writing to the SD is hardly incremental!
can't add new accounts
about half my created files on SD were deleted (save games, notes, configurations)
since existing files on SD cannot be changed, and new SD files cannot be created, the following apps will not function as I need them too, or fail to do anything:

That's just a few of the top of my head. Since some of those are emus, each adds hundreds more games and software that will not work (I own over 8000).

What format is your SD card formatted in? Maybe something changed with the update... like the Shield Tablet cannot write to the SD card if it is over 32GB and formatted with exFAT... it needs to be in NTFS for anything higher than 32GB...
Maybe the same case here? Try copying the files to your PC, format the SD card with your PC(and specify NTFS and defaults for everything else), not the tablet because the tablet will format in exFAT even if it is larger than 32GB...
Try that and see if it works.
My Ellipsis 8 is on the latest update, and I can read and write to the SD card just fine... Not sure what the issues are that you are having.
What size SD card do you have?
I have this tab, and rooted. It took me a while to get the right combination though. Go here (it's in Chinese): http://www.kingroot.net and click on the download button with the Android icon to download the kingroot apk. Find a way to install the downloaded apk to your tab. You are rooted. I didn't like the kinguser root manager so I used this Replace_Kingroot_With_SuperSU.zip to change to SuperSU for root managing. The zip is attached. Just unzip, copy the "mrw" folder to your tab and use adb as root (either terminal emulator or adb shell from your computer) to run this command:
sh /sdcard/mrw/root.sh

. Ignore the errors that may appear. After a while SuperSU will open and ask you to update binary. Do so and reboot. you are still rooted, but with SuperSU as root manager.
Now if only there were any custom ROMs...

Rooted using Kingroot just download and open click root let it do its thing if it fails select try again.... After root is established install suoerSUme let it do its thing.. Viola Root
