[Q] Which stick/box supports "Portrait" mode? - Android Stick & Console AllWinner based Computers

I need to be able to mount an HDTV on its side (tall view) and display a webpage on it.
Does anyone know which android stick or box supports switching to "portrait" mode?
I already bought an MK802IIIS and found out it doesn't support portrait mode

The MK809IV just got a software update to do this. It has annoyed some as now (without a fix-orientation app) some apps switch to portrait automatically.

Cool I just found that one here:
http://dealsprime.com/mk809iv-quad-...-8gb-hdmi-wifi-bt-rk3188-tv-stick-dongle.html
I really appreciate the info - I just have one last question - where can I get this update and instructions on how to flash it?
Thanks again!

http://www.rikomagic.com/en/download/download_22_1.html
There are two version of the hardware and the update is only for the newer one for now (201307* and up) but that should be what you get.
The download includes instructions.

So it appears you are saying that I can flash the firmware for the MK802IV into the MK809IV? Which would mean that the two are hardware identical, just sold by two different companies. So, could I just as easily buy a MK802IV and it will also have "portrait" mode with this update?
But, how can I be sure that the unit I purchase has a s/n higher then 201307?

Arse! Sorry, my bad - I meant an MK802IV - I hate these similar and yet so different model numbers. I am not sure if the 809 is compatible with the 802.

That said, reading the hardware spec they sound identical. The comment on the MK802IV forum is "MK802IV with AP6210 Chipset (S/N start from July) ...." so the chipsets look identical.

What did you mean by "The comment on the MK802IV forum is "MK802IV with AP6210 Chipset (S/N start from July) ...." so the chipsets look identical. "? Are you saying that I can/should use the MK802IV?
The 809 has only like two places its being sold and seem to ship from China.
But the MK802IV is being sold by many sourcse on Amazon.com for immediate delivery, but how would I know which ones have the latest hardware of 201307 and higher?

I am in the UK so can't help with sourcing it, but I would suggest it may be a lucky dip - however given the volumes it is less and less likely as time moves on that the older chipset is still in the channel.
I made a point of selecting a slightly more expensive amazon.co.uk marketplace seller who claimed to (and did) ship from the UK when I bought mine, just in case there were issues. If you can find a local shipper you may also be able to get a sensible answer re which serial numbers they stock before you place your order.
Good luck and apologies for the mistake earlier in model numbers.

Hi,
I got the MK802IV and installed the latest update and it works great in portrait mode.
Thanks for your help!

Rooting the Aluratek Cinepad AT110F

Granted that they inserted their queries into on-going threads. And also granted that they probably blew right past the video and this form’s norms when they registered. But no one even attempted to help them. Their questions were simply ignored.
This Aluratek (same folks who did the Libre for Boarders) is a rebranded Chinese tablet. Or perhaps being kinder to Aluratek you could say they spec’s a tablet and had it manufactured in China becuasue there are a few differences between the Cinepad and what is sold in China.
This tablet is currently being sold by Newegg, Tiger Direct, Walmart, Sears, Barnes and Noble, Amazon, etc. So this forum is likely to see an increasing number of questions about them
It appears that rooting the Cinepad may be as simple as running the program Unlock Root against it. (free at http://www.unlockroot.com/)
The base tablet that Aluratek modified slightly to come up with the Cinepad is the Yongxiang company’s YX 10A03. The 10” Aluraek lists its Model number (Settings->About Tablet) as YX 10A03 and shows a build number of ics.f33ref.20120329.
The Unlock Root website lists as tested devices two unbranded MID tablets both with model numbers of YX 10A03 and both with build numbers of ics.f33ref.20120XXX – within a few hundred of the Cinepad build.
I would be quite surprised if Unlock Root did not do the trick

I was hoping that someone would have a try at a custom rooted rom actually, because the firmware that Aluratek provides is basically unstable. I won mine from Quibids, and before the first week it had lost its mount points for the internal sdcard and of course my external sdcard. They provided me with a beta firmware that fixed that, but before I could really test it, the power button broke from the board. I sent it back, and here about 2 months later I now have a replacement tablet (definitely not the same unit). I find that the firmware on it matches the beta they had me flash the first tablet with, however this thing is definitely unstable. They told me it would have video issues, and in fact the Youtube app (no version I have it seems) will work on the thing. Well... long story made short, I am about to reflash the thing for about the 7th time tomorrow. It likes getting into boot loops for no discernible reason, and then seemingly comes out of them (sometimes) for some unknown reason also. It frustrates me to no end to have to reboot it, but it is necessary at times since it loses mountpoints for the sdcards just like the first one did originally from time to time. Rebooting it clears it up... that is unless it decides to start looping. Its kind of like a slot machine... never know when it will win or lose.
I am not complaining. I won it at a good price off of Quibids... and Quibids very generously provided me with an Archos 80 G9 to replace it... even though they knew that Aluratek would get around to sending me a replacement... eventually. So, no complaints here. But, it has become kind of a challenge for me. Its kind of hard to believe that the Archos and the Aluratek retails for about the same... since there really is no comparison in quality and stability. I have become an Archos and a Quibids fan.
Rooting it alone is not enough... the firmware itself is unstable. I wish I could find something that was halfway stable because I think it will be some months before Aluratek gets something past beta. It is actually not that bad of a tablet and this firmware gives it a lot of memory to work with. It has beautiful video and bright colors and a pretty good resolution. It has a mixture of good to average hardware, but not really what I would call cheap really. The problem is the firmware mostly... and a very badly designed power button that will break off very easily if you aren't really careful. I mean, it has built-in bluetooth... its not a bad deal if it would just be stable.
I was hoping that someone more experienced than I am would take the challenge since so many of these are being sold right now. I am only now becoming more familiar with the inner workings of Android. I have a fair amount of hardware and software experience mainly in PC's, but until this year have never gotten into Android. Now, I somehow have 4 tablets all different sizes and brands, and each have their own points and quirks. The Aluratek is the quirkiest. If anyone knows of a custom "stable" firmware for this tablet, I would appreciate the help. Thanks.
Thank you SerialQ

Rooting the Aluratek Cinepad brought such a dramatic change in making it stable for the first time, I just had to come back here and thank you for the tip on this Chinese program. It is a "tad" confusing since it mostly Chinese (outside of the word ROOT - pretty self-explanatory), and had a little trouble since the thing shut down at one of the reboots instead of rebooting. I found another set of instructions that said you have to let it reboot 3 times before it is finished. I had to help it by pushing the reset on the 3rd boot and then starting it, but it worked and now the tablet is sound and zooming right along. I have a presentation tomorrow and I am thinking of using it instead of my Archos.
Thanks once again... that was a great help to me.

Hi firesorm005,
i´m really glad that i was able to help you. In fact i had the same issues (including the broken powerbutton) with my yx 10a03.
since i rooted the device it is also running, except of the WIFI, stabel now.
If you like, you can try some build.prop tweaks to give the device more perfomance and optmize the power-savings.
you can find many tutorials when you google for it.
Use them with care and as always at own risk

I have an Aluratek Cinepad 7"
I got my Win7 machine to recognize the tablet, but Unlock Root couldn't ever find it (tried all 3 types of USB connections).
Then I tried ZhuoDaShi Tool, but the screenshots at the techrepublic link were different from the app (looked like the same app, but different version). I clicked every button on the app, but wasn't able to find one that would lead to actually doing something to the tablet.
Anyone have any new ideas?
Aluratek Cinepad AT108F
So, I just bought this tab and it'll be here on Friday compliments of J&R by way of Amazon. It hasn't any ratings (probably because it's new) and I don't see ANY threads for ROMs for this model or ANY Aluratek model for that matter.
The specs are INCREDIBLE for this price point and PERFECT for my tablet needs/desires. However, I'm quite concerned about the lack of dev support. While I know this model won't EVER be a highly purchased item because of the off-brand, it does have a common A9 Cortex processor that many other higher-end tablets are outfitted with. I must be looking in the wrong places. Does anyone have any links to share?

I managed to root my AT110f using Rootburner-v0.2, using the second advanced option. When the program wants to reboot the screen goes black and will not come back on, you have to press the reset button first as the power button is dead. (you have to do this 3 times on the rootburner app)
My Tablet is now fully rooted.:good:

He can't refund it because he bought it from a guy selling it on the streets (think he was fooled! and he thinks the same!)
Is something out there that can help him at least flash the phone or anything else?

If there's no reference to Android, or if there aren't any Android-specific settings on it, chances are that it might be one of them MAUI/Cosmos UI systems that come with certain Mediatek chipsets.

What does that mean ?
Basicly he doesn't have any options like he has on his HTC @ Cyanogen. I'm talking about he doesn't have USB preferences, Wi-Fi settings, recovery mode, download mode, etc..
And being MAUI/Cosmos UI systems means what?
And in some application preferences when he press settings his MRE version is 2.3.0, i don't know if this helps or not but I would like to help him.
When he first look at the phone the sticker said it was Wi-Fi certified, and had android technology, but it's just a sticker...
I'm really sad for him!

There's no phone software/firmware/wtv a normal android has in options :S
a Co-worker just handed me this same exact phone and asked me what I think, I told him i hope he didn't pay for it and he looked at me a bit sheepish. He paid 250 off of some guy selling it in the street. So I in turn came here to see if anything could be done via flashing. I guess its a no-go!
but anywho, this thing is so crazy they even mimiced some apps like Plants VS Zombie, fruit slash, and angry birds. it seems as if its running on java platform. its like a 10 year old device/specs.

[Q] ZTE Open C

I today received the ZTE Open C and I have to say it is a wonderful phone. There is one really irritating thing about it though. It is branded.
Whenever you lock the phone instead of displaying the wallpaper it displays the blue wallpaper of the Firefox, no matter what wallpaper you are using.
So for the people who know Firefox OS well: Is there a way to change this?
what release is running on ZTE Open C?
could you do a short review of the device, and more importantly, where did you get yours so early?
ZTE is sending out the ebay orders starting May 23rd...
not that i am interested in buying one, as i have the 1st Open, and i'll wait for better spec devices like the Alcatel Fire S,
but i guess it would be interesting for one or other here?

I saw the pre-order for it on Ebay on the 3rd of April, so the ship date for me was a lot earlier. It wasn't even linked on Google I just searched for it on Ebay and by chance it was there! Firefox OS 1.3 made by ZTE, and so far it's very good, apart from the problem I have mentioned. I would like to note that there is an app on the phone called "Software Updater" with "Update Device" "Update History" and "Update Frequency" options... I believe this means they are going to keep this updated. I'm using my ZTE Open for testing, and my ZTE Open C for main use (because of the larger screen)
Google ZTE Open C to find the ebay page, all the info is there, I would review it but I've only had it for a day so far
yeah, i would not bet on them supporting this one longer.
as it seems the Open is not supported anymore.
they don't answer questions about this.
Mozilla does not really answer questions about this.
so that is in my book a pretty good sign they wont support it.
lame.
still on MDN as a "developer" device.
how on earth should you "develop" if you can't update the frekking phone because the HAL is missing for newer builds?
thanks a bunch! 80 Euro wasted on a piece of crap phone that isn't worth more than 30USD to begin with.
being "early adopter" sure doesn't pay off here.
you get crappy hardware for a high price.
i pitty all the people who actually bought a geeksphone keon for 150USD (same low hw specs as the Open)
enough rambling, hope to see your review soon?

I'm sorry to dissapoint, but after using it for a few days there isn't enough different to review. There's the Firefox OS 1.3 which we know well, basically no lag at all and everything opens really quickly. The keyboard allows you to type really fast and still be accurate (this could be due to the 4 inch screen). The speaker is a little bit better and is on the front so you don't need to turn the phone around if you're listening to music, there is an update app on the phone which guarentees updates. The update option through the settings has been removed. It comes with a few of what I can only assume are ZTE's wallpapers but none of them have a logo or anything and most are quite good.
My only problem with the phone is that the lock screen never and will never display your wallpaper. It always shows the blue firefox wallpaper even if yours is different. I emailed ZTE and they said the "Firefox System" added it not them which I assume means the official Firefox OS 1.3 carrier build.
I hope this changes, because it's ugly. Other than that the phone is really good.

[Q] need to locate parts for chinese version n9006

Not sure where else to post this so posting here (mods feel free to move if there is a better spot)
I have been trying to find a charger port for a note 3 n9006 variant. This is a Chinese variant of the note 3. Other charge flexes will not work they are all basically the same regardless of carrier. But this version is very different it is basically a small board same width/height across the board. At any rate does any one have a clue as to where i can buy this part from? US or china etc makes no difference to me at this point. Just need this part. For that matter some one here might even have the part.

Note that I haven't even read through the thread, let alone done anything mentioned in it, so don't treat this as an endorsement - perform your own due diligence and decide if it's the path you want to take before embarking on it.
If you decide to follow this path, the correct region code for the USA appears to be C567 according to this thread. Good luck!
Above poster is correct.
Though there is no USA firmware (yet). I'm not even sure what Pro will release with in the US or if it will support WiFi calling (t-mobile and at&t pulled out)

It appears to all be about politics, as this article (among countless others) hints at. Don't be surprised to find ZTE products no longer being made available in the US market. I wonder how long it'll take them to realise that Motorola is now Chinese, and decide to ban that brand too?
Politicians: just like cockroaches, only more disgusting and less useful.

It's very hard to find electronics without Chinese-made parts
