Galaxy Note 3 DIY Tripod Mount...
With this camera... it just had to be done. Takes away all traces of motion blur on photos and 1080p 60fps video is freekin epic.
Used a Spigen ultra-fit slim case with one side of the housing shaved down to make it the top clip... bent piece of aluminum bar stock from The Home Depot... some 3M double sided mounting tape... and a 1/4inch thread tap to thread the aluminum to fit any camera tripod mount.
Luvin this phone yo....
Just left enough at the top of the case to snap in securely but still able to remove easily... (don't wanna scratch my baby)

Bent aluminum bar stock attaches firmly to spigen case with 3M tape... that ain't going nowhere
1/4inch threads in the bar stock will match any camera tripod available
Nice! Thanks. :good:
Thank-you sir...
you should add another piece for portrait mode
Maybe a T bar, so you can hold it like a camcorder?
Portrait mode built into the swivel ...
Couple more adjustments and extend the legs and it levels itself like a steady cam with all that weight on the bottom.
That one is really nice..!!!! From where did you get that...
Like I was saying in the OP... made it myself
± Targus 42" tripod (but you can use any ol' tripod)
± SunPak swivel ball head (left over from an old suction cup mount... not needed)
± Spigen UltraFit Slim case (with some cutting for easy snap in/out)
± 1inch aluminum bar stock (bent and tapped for 1/4inch tripod threads)
± 3M 1inch foam mounting tape (to stick the aluminum to the back of the Spigen case)
Mine shooting some 4K video and uploading to see the quality and stabilization? All 4k video I have been seeing shot from this device is incredibly shaky.

I can get that done tomorrow... my kid has an awards function at school I wanna try this on... will show how well it does with indoor lighting etc...
Great. Only thing I would change is the position of the case. I'd go for lining up the optical center of the lens with the center column of the tripod. I mounted my old razr HD to my tripod this way and the results for panoramas and spheres were mindblowing. Stitching the photos was almost seamless even when taking spheres in smaller rooms.

So I read this about 15 minutes ago and thought "damn... that's a freakin good idea bro"... took a look at my mount and the vertical axis (pan left/right) would be easy to modify... but the horizontal (tilt up/down)... jeezzz that would be a whole nuther story with the way the tripod is setup... damn
But I like this whole idea of the whole rig rotating on the cameras center point... I've used gimbals like that and you can't beat the orientation quality...
Then I thought "how close is close enough?" (For panorama and 360° anyway)
So I just took it outside and did a few test shots... figured the result would be better with it so close to center of rotation rather than swinging around at arms length as is normally done... and HOLY WOW is it awesome!! I was out in the middle of my yard and that was the best 360° shot I ever got with this phone... like you said the stitching and seams are practically non existant! (Except when looking down as the ground is so close to the camera the off axis shows up more prominently)
But anyway... good call dude... but I think I'll leave close enough alone with this one and think about making a proper 2 axis gimbal with some of the leftover aluminum later if I get ambitious...
Funny, I made this little riggup with video in mind but I never thought of Panorama and 360° quality improvement... really works out pretty sweet... 2 birds with one stone type deal right there yo...
I definitely want it for photog and it will come in useful at xmas, too, for video. I'm going to poke around in my gear and see what I can come up with. I have a ton of brackets, ball heads, etc. Just need to find what works.
Great thread!

So would I... making this thing isn't as fun as I thought it would be
I grabbed some thicker aluminum for this camera axis gimbal mount and it's a bummer to bend the way I wanted... it splits and cracks on the 90° bends... oh well... off to The Home Depot for some different material... try again tomorrow. :silly:

I have a similar set-up for macros that I haven't tried out yet. Life keeps getting in the way, darn it. Guess it would probably work the same.
Edit - Duh. Looked at the link name and it is a macro setup. Never thought of using it for my N3, though. I'm really going to have fun now.
What about this? I use this for my smartphones with a tripod and it works really great. It works with any phone in or not in any case. Sorry to rain on your parade but this thing really works really well! http://www.bitemyapple.co/products/capta

The quality is just as good as before but tapatalk cuts down the picture size by a good bit so take that as it is. This is from a maxx on ics 206 of my carport floor I did Saturday.
The pictures look great. I wish there was a full resolution upload option
Here's another shot but indoors.
I am very pleased indeed with photo quility especially using ics camera +

Thanks. It is worth it if you are considering it. Its very nice to walk out into a nice clean carport and not get dirty feet lol. My kids can sit down now and move around out there. I have maybe $130 invested in it and at minimum added value to my home.

The blur is probably because a phone's shape doesn't lend itself to taking a shot AND holding the phone still. Also, the sensor is teensy tiny, and it doesn't have a very fast "shutter speed". So, it's like taking pics with an SLR in dim light with a 1/30 second shutter: it's going to have motion blur w/o a stand. If you want crystal clear shots, use a vise/stand of some kind.
Maybe Canon's or Nikon's next pro-sumer DSLR will make/receive calls, texts, and play Angry Birds.
I use CameraZoomFX which lets me prop the phone and 'tell' the camera to take the picture hands-free. Those shots are always very clear. Handheld shots, not so much.

Oh will be nice to have a call with a 70-200 2.8 in hand
Okay, I'm lost....
Can anyone who still had pics prior to the leaks and NOW have one of the leaks post comparison pics? I mean seriously, as crisp as the photos are on GB, I can't see how there's such a need for enhancement to the razr's photo quality that it warrants a full thread. lol I'm still on a totally stock GB rom (anxiously biting my nails waiting for the update) and I'm ABSOLUTELY ASTONISHED at how crisp and detailed the camera's photos are.
Lol. Calls will be short with that lens on there. It would be funny though, seeing how huge people's arms get from holding a 4 kilo phone all day. They'd look like hermit crabs.
yeah its with ics leaks .204 let me look at my fb pictures maybe i got one with GB
i found one with GB
BTW - I've tried all of the "pro" camera apps available, and Camera FV-5 is easily the best one.
As to pictures on ICS vs GB, at least on .79, there isn't a huge change. It's all in the app you use.
The stock camera app on ICS seems to focus better prior to capture.
A good camera app should be able to take the same quality pic on GB as it would on ICS unless there was a flaw in the camera drivers under GB, which I don't think there was.
The Razr seems to have a decent sensor, but cheap / small optics. Don't get me wrong, it does take pretty good shots, but not like you'd see on a newer device with bigger, higher quality lenses. The sensor is only half of the battle, but people give the megapixel count all of their attention.
Some of the newer cams (like the OneX) have better optics and you can tell the difference right away. Plus a bigger lens helps keep noise down in dark shots.
I've seen a lot of cell phone photos but this phone is the best I've seen so far. Take a close look at the attached photo and you will see amazing clarity, true-to-life colors and a long depth of field. It is comparable to a photo I would take with my Canon 40D SLR camera.
I'm blown away.
Aside: Some of the detail is lost because XDA compresses the photo a lot. But you get the flavor of the photo from the attachment.
I agree. I loved my note 2 but got this note 3 solely for the camera upgrade. That alone was worth it to me

Excellent picture.
And I'm damn envious you went to the UCLA/Kal game. I had to miss it last weekend. I like how the picture clearly captures fans in the stands and the players on the field during warm ups. It looks like you are sitting in the lower level of Section 1 where the UCLA players exit from the tunnel. Very nice.
Well done with the pic. I hope to use the Note 3 camera the next home game against Colorado.
GO BRUINS!
RIP #36
I was taking low light pictures last night and came to a few conclusions:
1. Pictures came out a bit grainy
2. It was hard to manually adjust the focus point. The camera kept auto-focusing on the candle instead of the people regardless of where I tapped.
3. Viewing angle wasn't as good as the iPhone. [I took a picture with a 4S and Note 3 in the exact same location and had to lean back like crazy to get both people in the shot]
Aside from this, I've totally fallen in love with the Note 3 from my migration from the iPhone 5. I am however concerned about the camera performance and am crossing my fingers to hope that there are settings and things that I need to do to get a better picture quality.
It does however take amazing pictures when there's enough light.

You're exaggerating I take it.
I agree the camera ain't half bad for a phone, but it is in no way comparable to ANY DSLR (& I own 4 of them)
If it really is comparable to your Canon, you need to invest in some better quality lens...

Well, yes, it's an exaggeration. It's not as good as my EF 70-200mm f/2.8L lens. But look at the white balance and color reproduction on that photo. It's pretty true. And it didn't cost $2,000 either. And, that "L" series lens is quite bulky.
Read this article by Trey Ratcliff, my favorite photographer, and I think you'll agree that the days of the SLR are dead.

Those are good points, but that article you posted compares DSLR's to the Sony NEX7 (an excellent 2/3rds camera. I'm actually thinking of buying one) not to a vastly inferior camera phone.
I agree 100% that our new phones take decent snapshots for a phone, but for dim light or fast action shots (or both combined, like my sons nighttime football games under the lights) the DSLR still remains king and will for some time to come.
Just one problem is, the ridiculously large depth of field from these little fixed EF 2,2 lens guaranties you will never be able to blur the BG at all, (unless you PP every image after the game)
I love the fact that the cameras in these phones have come as far as they have. There is NO WAY I am carrying around one of my Canon EOS1D Mark II bodies and a 100--400 F 2,8 L lens but I always have my phone with me,
I hope I'm not taking this thread off on a tangent, but this thread reminded me of an issue I've been having.
I've notice that the Note 3 takes a while to actually process photos. I will take the photo and then the phone will tell me that the photo is processing. The processing can take up to 3-5 seconds which isn't helpful if you're trying to take multiple shots in quick succession.
Does anyone know why this happens? Is there a way around it?

For anyone researching this case before buying, I thought I'd post my experience. I'll try to list the aspects of the case as I experienced them with the "unboxing" as it were.
First off, ecstatic that I finally would have some decent protection for my phone. I put on a screen protector and cheap case while waiting for the Kraken to become available. Nothing of huge interest opening the package or taking the case apart (I'd watched a lot of S4 Kraken videos).
The inner silicone Perseus case is REALLY flimsy. It took me a long time to get the front over the silicone without wrinkling it, it took me several tries. After that, the Perseus and front easily snap together with the back.
I had to take off the kickstand to get the case to lay flat. With the stand off, the rubber corners make contact with the desk and I don't have to worry about scratching surfaces.
With the phone screen turned off you can see what looks like oil or something between the protector and the phone but it seems to be lessening over the past 24hrs and this oil look isn't visible when the screen in on. There is increased Spen friction from the protector. I don't know if I'm just getting used to it, but it seems to be getting smoother. I've found the protector to be a lint magnet as well as smudges/fingerprints.
All sensors, microphones and speaker works fine. The speaker even seems louder now.
The headphone and charger flaps close firmly but not the Spen one.
The Spen is a pain to get out but I guess I'll get used to it.
There doesn't seem to be any glare from the flash when taking pics.
The power and volume buttons seem to work better with this case than on the cheap slim case I had on previously.
I find the case big: 3 5/8" x 6 3/8" x 5/8" not including the protruding corners ( 3 3/4" x 6 1/2" x 3/4" with corners)
Overall, I think this is a solid case with good protection but time will tell (I work in construction)
I forgot to mention a couple of things. There is rubber on the sides of the case where you grip it. This is also where the belt clip connects
The clip seems to grab well enough. I tugged at it in different directions and it held. The ratcheting tension seems weak though. I can see it wearing out fast. As far as how the phone looks on the belt, I think it looks kinda goofy but maybe I just have to get used to it.
Also, I got the tripod connector for the case. I don't know if Trident has different size connectors to match diferent phones but the one I have isn't long enough to clear the side of the phone. I'll have to try to modify the shoe on my tripod to get it to work.
Sounds interesting but a picture is worth a thousand words. Guess pics can be found elsewhere online.

I can't speak for the bar mount, I never held it in my hand. But I can say that the tripod mount only actually clips into the case on one end of the mount. There is a lot of resistance when clipping it in and taking it off. I think initially you should be good but I would wonder after all the vibration it would take, would the clips start to loosen up? Trident does make a bar mount, but if it was me given the cost of the phone, I'd have another exoskeleton replacement when you start to see it loosen up. I think the trident mount has rubber inside of the area going around the bars so it should diminish the vibration.

It works fine. I haven't noticed any loss since I put it on. The compass needs constant calibration but I don't think that has anything to do with the case.

The corners are pretty beefy for sure but they make for nice, quiet gripping on the back and the 4 sides. It's too bad they don't protrude past the face as well.
Just bought this case. So far so good.
I only have to complaints about this case
The power button is very hard to push down and use. Is anyone else having this problem?
Also the screen protector it comes with has the "bubble" effect I'm thinking about just taking it off. I already have a screen protector on there.

Thought I'd start up a dedicated thread for this case.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MJXK8VM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
At an average of under $10 on Amazon, this case is a quarter of the cost of the official case. It adds the protection of a hard cradle that the tablet sits in, which the official case doesn't offer.
Based on the popularity of the case on Amazon, I'd suggest NVidia may lose some sales of the official case to ProCase.
One thing to consider is that this case might interfere with passive cooling as suggested in https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/767648/shield-tablet/3rd-party-case-/
For that price, I'll drill vent holes in it if necessary. ?
In going to take the risk and have ordered one.
Looks nice, I have a similar case for my Nexus 7 but I don't want the back all covered up. I'm still holding out for a cover that snaps into the bottom of the tablet (like the official cover).
I kinda wish there was a really snug bumper for it with a lip that would cover the harsh bezel edges with rubbery comfort.

Yeah, they really are rather sharp. Not quite sure why they decided to go that way with the design.
I ordered one of these and it just shipped today. I probably won't get it until late next week (US holiday on Monday) but I can take pics and give some basic impressions when I get it if any is interested.

Right, it's winging its way over to me with the shield controller. Should have them in about 3 or 5 days.
Mine arrived yesterday; I got the green one. I very much like the protection provided by the snap-on case and the magnetic cover "latches" nicely in the closed position. Opening the cover does wake the tablet which is also nice.
The cover folds back but does not seem to magnetically "latch" to itself or the rear of the case in either the "keyboard" mode, the "movie" mode, or folded flat against the back of the case. The "keyboard" mode works easily enough as the weight of the tablet holds it in position but the "movie" mode doesn't work well for me but perhaps the cover joints will loosen up a bit and work better over time.
I find the protection aspect (and price) of this cover to be far superior to the nVidia case but the nVidia case works far, far, better as a stand than this one does, at least mine.
<edit> Please see additional comments and retraction in the next post. </edit>
I retract my previous statement regarding the cover not magnetically latching to itself in the "movie" stand mode. There is a magnetic clasp there but you have to fold the cover into the proper geometrical arrangement which I clearly had not been doing. When done properly, the cover does indeed snap to itself quite nicely and the tablet stands up properly for viewing a movie.
This is an excellent case and priced, in my opinion, lower than it is worth. :good:
Well I ordered the red one off of amazon, should be getting it tomorrow along with my 64GB Samsung SD card. Hopefully will have my shield next week, have to wait for Best Buy to ship it.
Update: I received my case, and I have to say I was actually impressed with the quality of the case. Much better than I was expecting. My Shield shipped already so I should have it soon.
Just got mine. Nice case.

@aznmode, yeah just got mine. Same colour as yours. It's performing great for me. I just wish the magnetic clasp was able to grab onto something more secure when it is in "stand mode". I find the magnet sometimes pops loose for me. It's trivial to reaffix it again, so for the price I'm certainly willing to turn a blind eye to this behavior.
With the Procase, do any of you guys notice the shield getting hotter than usual?

I played HL2 last night and it got as hot as it did when I didnt have a case. There aren't really any vents on the tablet that it covers, so I don't see how it could affect it. If anything it should act as a heat sync and help with the heat.

Ok Thanks for the quick reply. I'm debating if I should order this case as well as the controller or order the official cover

I played Sky Force 2014 (not Tegra enhanced, but pretty graphically rich for a shmup) and immediately after ending my 2 hour session of almost non-stop gaming, I opened System Monitor (app) and my temp was 40 deg Celsius. My Nexus 7 was climbing up to about 60 deg Celsius on the same game.
How is it when you have the covert folded back but flat against the back of the shield? does it lay completely flat? Can someone post a picture if they have it please.

It lays practically flat, with just the smallest amount of rake down from the cover fabric hinge to the metal clasp.
Hope it helps.
Thanks @jaredmorgs!!! I was waiting for someone to show a pic before I order it.
It's been a long time since i've done my quick little reviews. But since I got the Nexus 6 I figured I would make one.
Here is my quick video review of the Spigen Neo Hybrid Case for our phone! (Voice over by my GF, cause someone is bound to ask me)

I sent mine back a week or so ago.. I didn't really like the moto logo exposed and thought it could allow dirt/dust to get in between the case and the phone .. I went with a case that covers the whole back..
Sent from another Nexus..

Interested in how you fixed the buttons. That's the only thing I don't like with this case
Nice pictures. But...
I absolutely hated this case personally. Makes the phone feel huge and bulky, just cheap overall. The sides don't fit very well (bow out) -- flimsy plastic, buttons are a loose plastic mess, it's bulky and feels cheap. Just not worth the price tag when compared to other cases.
@Ellingsoc .. I'll have that video posted in a few days. You will love how much nicer the buttons become.
@Andromjb.. Was the bowing because of the way the bumper was seated on the tpu case? It took me a while before I got the fitment to be perfect because I didn't realize the two pieces weren't in place correctly
Can you explain it haha these buttons are driving me nuts
I really want people to go to the video for that info. But I'll PM you.

Could have just been my particular case as I applied it multiple ways, but it never fit 100% correctly no matter how hard I tried.
Bottom would always bulge leaving the plastic rough to touch while handling (on the upper backside area by microphone). Top was a tedious task of maneuvering the soft rubber backing to fit correctly without getting stuck underneath the outer plastic shell. Plastic sides were flimsy. Unappealing loose cheap plastic buttons which were always in the way.
I was always accidentally hitting/pressing the volume rockers or turning the screen off while just trying to hold the phone.
Just bad design, imho.
Try out a Ringke MAX. You'll see a major difference in quality and features for the same (actually cheaper) price point.
the way i put the case on was to first align the bumper and tpu perfectly. Then I would hold the left and right sides firmly and put the phone in bottom side first. Snap the top corners in while pressing the phone downwards to the bottom of the case. Works perfect every time so far!
@Ellingsoc .. I pm'ed you bout the buttons btw. Nothing shows in my sent box though. If you didnt get it send me a pm and ill respond to that one

I have a clear back protector on my phone, then this case. Any dust or dirt that gets in will just mess up the plastic film

I would appreciate the info via PM also. Don't see the secondary video posted yet. Doesn't my seniority here afford me that?
Even in the pictures you have taken with your case, it is showing a minor glimpse of what I was experiencing. I think you may have gotten a better quality case from manufacturing or perhaps they have made stealth revisions since as mine was a lot worse even with proper applications.
See attachment below -- which was the rough touch edge I referred to from previous comments.
that really just looks like it wasnt clipped in fully. but i could be wrong.
And i shot a quick video of the button fix. will be posting it in maybe 20 minutes

It's just the way the case is designed. It goes on a bit too snug, so it leaves some parts a bit uneven which returns poor results and rough edges.
I'm not trying to say the case is terrible. I just want people to be informed of the certain flaws and quality before they end up spending $19+ while they have other options available for less.

I loved this case for my S4. I thought it actually made the buttons feel better! But for this phone...well let's just say I use a Rinke slim now.
