Migrating from 4.1.2 to 4.3 - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm currently on omega 43.3 based on xxemc3 with modem DDDLJ1. Planning to move to a sammy based 4.3 rom. Are the following steps ok? Or do I need to add more
1. Backup up data + EFS
2. wipe internal sd
3. boot into cwm
4. install.
A little confused about the modem. Which one should I install ?
Also once I've moved on to 4.3 in case I need to come back to 4.1.2 what are the steps I need to follow?

Nandroid backup + EFS backup + titanium backup + whatever you back up your sms with if applicable
Wipe data / factory reset from recovery
Flash ROM
Use whatever modem you want, it's not relevant.

Well yes, that's a given. The modem that comes with the rom will work, or reflash the modem you have now. Obviously without an EFS v1 backup, you cannot use an EFS v1 modem. This hasn't changed. But why anyone would need an EFS v1 modem nowadays is beyond me.

Reason why I asked about the efs v1 modems was that I still haven't moved on to the newer modem versions. Have'nt updated since omega v43.3. Guess it's time to change

Thanks for this usefull post

Well hopefully, you should be able to restore EFS v1 backup after flash and use an older modem. But before flashign latest rom, you could try and flash just one of the latest modems and see how they work for you.

But while flashing the new ROM, you'll get a new modem so you don't need to bother you with a EFS backup. The backup is only here in case of troubles.

You might have to flash your old modem since the CWM backup does not contain the modem and most ICS ROM's come with non-compatible modems.

[Q] Revert back with nandroid backup on Jellybean?

Hello,
when my S3 was on Android ICS 4.0.4 I made a nandroid backup with CWM. Now my phone is on Jellybean 4.1.1.
Now I have 3 questions:
1) Can I restore that nandroid backup without running into any issues (as it is a different android version now)?
2) will that get me back completely to ICS / 4.0.4?
3) can I restore the backup with some app (since CWM is no longer working on JB when using CF-Root from what I read)?

No you will not have the old modem but whatever modem included with JB .

Standard method is to boot into recovery .
Basics .

Modem is your baseband.. The part which interacts with your kernel and the cell towers to give mobile signal..if you want your previous modem..flash the modem seperately via cwm..
sent from here, there, somewhere!!
OK I own a GT-I9300 I believe it's from Europe. So the correct modem for me to flash would be the BULG2? Here's the link forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1740061
It's a Quad Core.
Anyone?
As long as you can boot in recovery you can restore your phone safely. Also CWM doesn't backup modem etc. so restoration process will not touch your existing modem.

[Q] How to backup EFS / IME? i9300 confused.

hi,
after reading & talking to people regarding changing ROM most of the people recomended backing up the EFS partition (the IMEI)
i have read many tutorials some of them with weird hidden manus that dint match mine #*7284# and actually im getting kind of lost...
can anyone please help me find a guide with an updated on how backup my EFS/IMEI before im trying to mess with my phone?
thanks in advance,
ER
It's just a folder in the root of the device. You can copy it manually using any file manager with root access. Some recoveries such as philz, have an option to backup. There are efs backup apps on play.....

Yes, but if you want to stay stock no need to back up efs there is slim to nothing chances you will lose imei
Hi, if you want backup /efs folder, don't do a copy folder with root explorer.
Use this app play.google com /store/apps/details?id=net.hellcat.droiddev.ktool

Well if you want to flash custom ROMs you are going to need Root anyway except if you just want to update your current Samsung Firmware. In this case you can just flash via Odin of course without Rooting your device.
Maybe you can backup the EFS Folder via ADB but I never tried that so just pulling it from the system folder via a root explorer is easier, at least for me.

if i understood correctly you flash CWM trough odin and then you can just flash your new rom. am i worng?
and it seems that that guy above you mentioned that copying isn't enough...

The guy above said that a manual restoring of EFS isn't possible when the phone won't boot into the ROM, well that`s correct but the point of a EFS backup is to restore it when you have a working ROM but without a EFS Folder (happened for some reason more than once here at XDA).
Yes if you have Root, backup your EFS Folder, then you can flash a CWM Recovery through Odin and then after wiping data/cache you can flash a new custom ROM.
first of all thanks for all the help. now at least i can start
so ill just look for goot root tutorial
more of a opinion questions:
so you recommend on using Odin to get CWM? or RomManager ( i heard it can do it)
do you have any rom you can reommend on? or another restore program other then clockwork?

Well it shouldn't really matter but one time I tried to flash CWM through ROM Manager and it failed for some reason leaving me with a bootloop. I don't now what went wrong there but since then I either use Odin to flash CWM or the last time I did it by flashing the Siyah Kernel. It gives you Root and you can flash the CWM Siyah Touch Recovery straight from the S-Tweaks App but it`s really your decision.
About the ROM, there are ROMs that are based on Samsung`s TouchWiz Firmware and ROMs that are based on AOSP / CyanogenMod. There is no such thing as a best ROM, so you are going to have to figure this out yourself since it depends on your personal taste. I use Temasek`s build of CyanogenMod with his Kernel and it gives me the right amount of customization and can be used as a daily driver.

[Q] How can I backup/restore ENTIRE phone?

Hello.
I'd like to give MIUI a try, but, of course, I'd also like to switch back to my stock ROM if things go wrong or if I don't like MIUI.
How can I backup my entire phone (rooting, Recovery Mode capability and other on-power key-combination-activated features etc etc) and 100% failsafe restore it at any time?
Thanks in advance.
Rooted stock = do a nandroid (CWM) backup which is essentially an 'image' of the phone at the time you make the backup. Try MIUI; don't like it ? Restore the nandroid you took of your rooted stock setup. Sorted (You will need to ensure you backup the contents of your external SD card separately if you have one).
Be careful you don't 'overthink' this, it's really very simple both ways (backup/restore).
My Recovery Mode doesn't have a backup option

Thanks for prompt response. I took a look at current Recovery Mode menu and it doesn't include a backup/restore option like in http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/ClockworkMod_Recovery. It shows only the above:
Code:
Android system recovery <3e>
Volume up/down to move highlight;
power button to select.
reboot system now
apply update from external storage
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
apply update from cache
test redbend fota[FS]

I've already downloaded Recovery from clockworkmod.com but didn't do anything with it yet.
Sorry if it has already been detailed in another thread, but I didn't find it and I don't know how to make such nandroid backup.
Thanks.
OBackup
I've just downloaded OBackup app from Play store and am doing my backup.
My question is: after I flash MIUI, what are the tools/steps I'll need to restore my backup?
Thank you very much.
That's the stock Android recovery.
OK...
What you need to do is not install CWM separately. That will only persist until you reboot & is designed to allow you to flash whatever rom/kernel you want which will have it's own version of CWM baked into the kernel.
That backup program you're using; no idea as I've never used it.
What I recommend you do is find a custom kernel you like (actually, any custom kernel will do given you're going to flash Miui) which will have CWM. Flash that into your stock setup, then make a nandroid (CWM) backup of your stock setup so you can go back to it if you don't like Miui/whatever else you try (If you restored this & wanted to go back completely stock/unrooted/etc, all you'd need to do is flash a stock kernel). This is what you asked for in your OP. I warned you not to start overcomplicating things, and this is exactly what you're doing.
The kernel supplied with Miui should have CWM, so if you find you don't like it, you should be able to simply restore the backup you made of your stock setup in CWRecovery.
I also very strongly recommend you learn 'the basics' as you seem to be lacking in this knowledge. Flashing stuff/etc without knowing these things leads to busted phones. Read the tutorials/guides stickied near the top of the General section; there's a wealth of information in those.

Hi and tnx for reply!
I've try to do a restore of my sock rom from recovery but it's says to me that there is an error on md5 check sum...
I've install the RootBox ROM in my gt-i9100...but I can't come back to sock from recovery because the stock kernel dosen't work with RootBox's Kernel...
so I've to use odin to flash the stock firmware.......at the origin, my idea didn't comprised use odin because of download mode counter (so that why I did a backup!)...but now I don't have any other way...!
...what a sad story.. XD

You can't restore your backup because of a different MD5 SUM which means that your backup has been corrupted.
Flashing a stock ROM or Kernel via ODIN will not increase your flash counter.
Flash NeatROM Lite, this is the best ROM ever, it like stock with additional things.

[Q] Rooting i9300

I'm still on stock I'd like to flash one of 4.4.2 ROMs. However, most of them have line in instructions that latest CWM is required. Since CF-Auto-Root does not contain it, I was wondering if anything can go wrong if I use that root method? Should I proceed with any other root method instead?

Hi,
You can use these steps to flash CWM or a recovery of your choice via Odin:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=39433857&postcount=4
In addition, I personally prefer [i93xx][CWM Advanced Edition] PhilZ Touch.
Hope this helps.

ASAP as far the threads here stipulate. I did 2 backups of my EFS the moment i got my SGS3. I was however, only able to accomplish this by first flashing a custom recovery. Once the custom recovery was installed, (I was and still am using Philz Touch) the first thing I did was backup my EFS folder.

Yep like oreo27 said before flashing any custom roms backup your EFS preferably while you are still on your original rom that your phone came with and make a couple of backups and keep copies on computer.
You will also find that some roms have options to backup your EFS before flashing that particular rom you can never have too many backups ...

The ROM I installed (NeatROM S3) included the option to backup EFS during the Aroma install process, and it's ticked by default. I'm not sure if all ROMs are this good at reminding you
