Nexus 10 KitKat First Impressions - Nexus 10 General

My first thought... what did they do to the settings menu?! It almost seems like the Nexus 10 OTA is really a phone-optimized version. It lacks the dual-pane view that we had in 4.3.

"Select Runtime" is not available under Developer Options on my Nexus 10 with KitKat, so answer is no I guess.

Very bad and strange.
How are Google apps (e.g. gmail) behaving? Tablet or phone mode?

Gmail and the new email app uses tablet mode.

The keyboard doesn't have the tab button!

This is so sad. I bought the Xoom on launch day and although it had many bugs it has an amazing desktop ui and got better with time! I bought the Nexus 10 not long after launch and its doing the opposite, getting worse as it ages. If tablet ui is going to become more phone like I'm going to try a Nexus 7..........or an IPad..........

I might try an lg tablet in the future like g pad or the one after it. It looks amazing but a little expensive. I'm sure if enough people ask for it Google will fix this mess. They could send out a small update to change it back to tablet mode and add in whatevers missing. But it seems to me they were just focusing on the nexus 5 and just rushing the other devices

My first impression is besides the fact animations are a little bit smoother I'm left pondering if I flashed an update or if I flashed a white notification bar theme

I just manually updated mine.. been playing around with it and it seems to handle multitasking a bit better. Less app refresh. Also less homescreen redraws.
Oh, and I still prefer the old bootup screen. This new one looks cartoonish

I think it's a bit early to judge the battery...
Just flashed the new update. The settings are silly and there should have been transparency and ART, but it's okay, i guess

Just had a hard reboot while ironically enough, loading the factory image page in Chrome..

The history log on battery monitor widget pro reports the tablet as drawing quite a bit more power when in screen off standby compared to 4.3. It used to be less than -10mA. Now, it can be up to -300mA, but slowly declining after that to -81mA. I'm not sure if it's really drawing that much more power, or there's something about the way the data is collected that is skewing the results. I'm not noticing a significant difference in the power draw as reported on battery monitor widget pro for screen on usage though.

Sound's like I might be keeping 4.3 then...
Sent from my Nexus 10 using xda app-developers app

I've noticed better colors.
Or maybe just a better behave of the light sensor (I'm pretty sure about that... finally!)
Less homescreen redraws, I used to hate that thing.
No hard reboots so far, but it's only half a day...
And yes, new settings layout really sucks, I hope Google fix that soon.

Some disappointing reports here and the lack of transparent navbar and not ART piss me off. I'm a big Google fan and love Android but must say Android updates/releases have become a bit boring. It's seems innovation in Android has slowed to a crawl. I sure hope it's just temporary with all the changes in the Android team and they get back on track soon...

I'm excited to have the better quick settings as toggles as they should have been from Google. Having them be shortcuts to their perspective settings is dumb. Can't wait to get off work today and try this ROM out!
I installed this a while ago and so far everything is running great, the only thing I noticed is that the changelog shows that it has the Trinity kernel but it does not appear to be there once the ROM is installed.
Edit: The only thing I've noticed is that when playing Need for Speed: Most Wanted the steering is now off about 8-9 degrees to the right, I have to hold the device tilted to the left to maintain a straight line while driving.
Edit 2: I got the steering issue figured out and all is well.

Nice to see 4.2 ROMs pop up here and there.
But considering all the complaints about the stock version, how's the battery life and performance? What about screen calibration?
I know benchmark results don't always have anything to do with real life but still it'd be fun to see some results in Quadrant, Velamo, Antutu.

Nexus 10 and android 4.3 observations as seen by their owners (please share your fi

Hey just wanted to start thread on what we find as owners of our tablet running 4.3 .Lock if already been done on another thread. Share your thoughts of what you like or dislike, and what you have noticed.
Some of my findings on the update (fyi my tablet is totally non rooted ) :
-amazing battery life! I had the tab off charge 7 hours (11am) and maybe playing on my tab for an 1 1/2 hours( surfing net, fb , etc. ). Its now almost 7p and at 96% battery life! Standby time battery usage is improved greatly.
- way more smooth ! Pages glide with no lag .Internet seems more fast!
- I have more memory freed up now. Gained back almost a gig back.
I had 4.3 for a day so little things I've like above I instantly noticed . I'll add more on here or have anything you want me to try (staying non rooted) just ask. Id made this topic for people that don't have 4.3 update and curious on how its performing. Again please share your thoughts.Thank You.

After installing from the 4.3 OTA zip, I found too many of the apps I use did not work so have reverted to 4.2.2. In no way is this a negative comment on 4.3 but I decided to wait until the devs caught up with this new release.
Apps that I need working before I upgrade again:
> Right now the root SuperSU v1.51 solution is not working with Script Manager (SManager).
> full!screen and MX Player Pro are not compatible with 4.3
By far the lack of a viable HW accelerated video player puts the upgrade on hold. I must be able to reliably play back my HD content located on my NAS server. Outside of the surfaceflinger memory leak I had 4.2.2 tuned just the way I like it.
4.3 added the otg drivers to stock.

now is takes around 10 hours to charge via USB. Plus initailly , it used to charge with moderate web browsing usage. now it discharges even on day dream. I guess they have reduced the currrent limit in the entire system leading to a higher charge time , and the less frequent occurrence of thermal throttle.
Firefox has suddenly devloped a ton of problems on 4.3 -- keyboard lag, pages not loading, etc. Reboots and reinstall (of Firefox) doesn't fix them. Mozilla says the fix is to use their Nightly super beta: http://nightly.mozilla.org/
Been running CM 10.2 for a day or so now and it seems fast and smooth. Battery life is great (I don't know if/how much better than 4.2.2). It needed a bit of tweeking to get root to properly apply on first flash but I'm sure that will be ironed out.
All in all I have no complaints. Fast and smooth...what else can you ask for?

Which to me indicates that the Nexus 10 2 will not be coming out anytime soon, or rather this month anyway. I bet the Nexus 5 is launched in the next few days, but the 10 I'm sure is at least a month off. Usually before something comes out, you get some sort of pictures etc of what it may look like a week or so before it comes out. But in the case of the Nexus 10 2, their has been zero pictures of any kind posted or leaked.

Yeah it sucks if they are. But honestly I probably won't get it unless it has at least 64 gb of storage and a better screen. I'm perfectly content with the current Nexus 10. It does everything I need it to perfectly. More storage space would be cool, but I don't really need it with my otg.

This is likely a false render, look carefully at the position of the front facing camera. It is on the side like phones or some small tablets. Also why would a 10" tablet be shown in portrait mode when that size is almost always used in landscape?
Also it looks like it isn't 16:10 screen ratio... Fake

With the 4.4 update improving performance on devices with 512mb of ram, do you guys think this will have a significant impact on the nexus 10 performance wise?
Being that our GPU takes up around one 1gb of ram due to the high res screen, I'm hopeful that 4.4 will work some magic and make the nexus 10 a little more multitasking friendly and smooth performance out a bit.
Keep an eye out here.. Although Manta always lags behind so cross your fingers.

You can either copy your photos and app data to a computer and flash the factory image or wait for someone to repackage the stock rom for flashing via custom recovery. You normally won't have to wait long for someone to repackage it though

OK thanks I'll do that. For some reason I always have trouble getting back to stock so it might be better to just flash the factory image. I have about 21 gigabytes of data through so it'd take forever to copy it to a CPU and back. I'll just wait for the repackage.

Google Experience Launcher for Nexus 10 (or any other tablet)

SOLVED by Google http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/1...el-on-tablets-and-more-apk-download/#download
Thanks man. I wanted this so bad but when I tried the one from the nexus 5 it was all messed up. I'll test this out and respond. But is the battery life OK with the launcher or does the always on Google now listening cause it to waste faster?
Battery life isn't affected for as far as I've noticed. Are you testing on Nexus 10 or on another tablet? Hope it'll work out for you

It seems Google has updated the search app and thereby the basis of the GEL. I'm going to test it on 4.4 perhaps they've made the right adjustments themselves!

I tried it and no it still has the uncentered issue and all messed up. The drawer has way too many icons. I think you still need a nodded version with kitkat

Is anyone else getting graphical glitches with GEL when you try to swipe from the last homescreen, and the white box appears? I get odd flickering on mine. I also noticed it's more visible with larger sized wallpapers, the stock ones doesn't have the problem that badly.
The stock 4.4 launcher doesn't have this problem, or Nova/Apex:

This is also with the most recent Google Search apk.
This launcher is absolutely horrible, it lags like hell. I'm running the fixed one, with updated Google search. App drawer open/close animation lags, swiping to google now lags, swiping app drawer pages is slow and i bet it has low framerates as well. Absolutely horrible!
I finally got 4.4 with the factory image.. Messed up 4.3 so much I could not get the OTA installed in any way. But now with the GEL only some slight trouble occurs when sliding into Google Now. Will test further tomorrow but everything else seem to working incredibly smooth for now.

Anyone having glitches when switching to a homescreen with widgets? I'm running stock KitKat
Nice to see I'm not the only one noticing glitches with GEL. I guess it's simply not ready yet for the N10. It runs fine on my friend's 2013 N7 but then again that has a similiar resolution to the N5.

I must say that the install of the KitKat factory image has resolved the horizontal lines glitching in widgets on GEL. Sliding into Google Now remains stuttering a bit, but I didn't encounter any other issues yet. If it is not too much of a trouble I would recommend flashing the KitKat factory image..

I already flash the kitkat factory image. I guess it's because of the resolution

This is weird. I installed the launcher from Android Police (following a link from the link in the first post) and while it's working great (no glitches, no hitches, no lag, perfectly smooth), I'm also missing the transparent notification bar and softkeys... You guys all seem to have transparency and with it sub-par performance. Am I missing something or is there something weird going on?

Transparent notification bar and softkeys are disabled on the Nexus 10 by default. If you want to enable them, read this thread - enable transparency (mod)

Ah, so I have to both install the launcher and get that mod. Got it, thanks!
