[Q] Installing CM7 ROM. Su binary not in apps - Motorola Droid X2

I saw other posts like mine, but they were not installing the same ROM or using a DROID.
I tried to post in the CM7 forum, but it requires 10 posts experience.

[UPDATED 4/20][ROM]CyanogenMod 7.2.0-RC1 X2 [BETA]
How to install CM7 (Cyanogenmod) for the Motorola Droid X2:
[Did this in step 4]1. NANDROID BACKUP!
x2. SBF to 2.3.4 unless you are already there. See MoonShadow-NM's guide: HowTo: Perform a SBF ("factory restore") of your Motorola Droid X2
x3. Root your Motorola Droid X2. See MoonShadow-NM's guide: HowTo: Root your Motorola Droid X2 - UPDATED [14DEC2011]
x4. Install the Motorola Droid X2 Bootstrap Recovery (BSR). See MoonShadow-NM's guide: HowTo: Perform a bootstrap (or nandroid) backup and recovery of your Droid X2
x5. Put the Google Apps zip, the CM7 zip, and my patched BSR apk on your EXTERNAL sdcard.
x6. Boot into BootStrap Recovery. (You should know how to do this... See item number 4 above as a reference.)
x7. Install the CM7 zip.
x8. THEN the Google Apps Zip.
x10. IMPORTANT! Wipe data and cache (factory reset) and wipe dalvik cache!
x11. Boot your phone into CM7. (You will probably have to activate if you didn't after you SBF'd and setup your Google account here.)
x12. Install the patched Motorola Droid X2 Bootstrap Recovery (BSR). (This can be found in the download section of this post. Once you have CM7DX2 installed, you MUST install this BSR!)
13. Go into the Superuser app and update the su binary.
When I open Superuser, the su binary is not listed as an installed app.
I have been though these procedures a couple of times and I feel comfortable with what I am doing. I had it working once, but I had to change the email address associated with the phone. Now I'm stuck.
Thanks.

[Q] I cant root HTC eris

I asked this in the main forum Q&A then i found this Eris sub forum. My son has tried to root his Eris for 2 days,He has tried the htc eris 1 click app from the market, the unrevoked method, and the eris root for dummies. It says rooted after everything he has tried but if you try to use a program like titanium backup it says no root access and root checker say it isn't rooted any help??
afaik all 3 of those methods (well, 1-click and dummies for sure) do not modify anything in the normal ROM at all - they only install a custom recovery.
That's why you are seeing the result you do when trying to use root-aware tools in the normal OS - it hasn't been altered even one bit. What is meant by "rooted" in this case is that you have gained privileges to alter the phone (via the custom recovery) - not that the "su" native binary or the "SuperUser.apk" (app) has been installed on your phone.
The "Eris Root for Dummies" thread over on AF is quite explicit about this - you just need to read the first four or five posts carefully. It's got pictures and everything.
By booting the custom recovery, you can:
1) Back up your current ROM (highly recommended before you do anything else).
2) Wipe (data/factory reset) and flash a new ROM, or
3) Perform other customizations
Normally, if you were only going to add the "su" binary and the "SuperUser.apk" app to the existing ROM (I suppose *that* is what you thought was meant by "rooted"), you could do this by flashing the "engtools3.zip" file in the custom recovery.
There is a current thread over in the all things root subsection of AF that has a link to the "engtools3.zip" file. I'll let you find it - I'm feeling a bit lazy right about now.

The 1-click app puts a zip file on your SD card that you can flash from Recovery that gives you the SU app and support files that you need in order to get root level access in the stock ROM. I still suggest installing either xtrSENSE or 666 Sense to get an overclocked kernel (and xtrSENSE adds a lot of extra storage space for third party apps.) Both of these you *should* be able to flash over stock without wiping data, so it will keep your settings and apps that you have already installed, though I would do a Nandroid backup first anyway. (If you read the fourth post in the Dummies thread it will walk you through the steps on Nandroid backup and flashing a zip file - just ignore the wipe step if you flash the rootme.zip file or the two sense custom ROMs.)
I understand it now.Thank you very much.

EternityProject EasyRoot for ICS in development is a 1 click root method to your Motorola RAZR.
Very easy and verified method.
Phone so sharp, I sliced myself.

Matt's utility 1.7 is super easy too.
Is there currently any root/unroot utility? I am not super tech and try to avoid using adb etc... I am lazy and like simple.
I tried using the Eternity method but I don't think it worked...Root Checker tells me I don't have root, and SuperUser keeps denying apps.

Same thing happened to me all I did was reinstall the Motorola drivers and re did it. Disable any other drivers like Samsung HTC.
Phone so sharp, I sliced myself.
I did that but still didn't work lol.
I shouldn't have any other drivers installed, my only other smartphone was a Droid X.
Matt's DroidRazrUtility 1.7 is by far the best and very easy.

Another vote for Matts 1.7. eazy breezy rootification magic is free in the app.
Ok, Matt's Utility worked perfectly! Now...how would I go about installing a ROM?

You may have an old version of SuperUser still on your phone. The Eternity project has TWO (2) scripts. Everyone needs to try the first. If you still don't have root, try the second. If instructions are unclear, see this.
Thanks for the help, but I got everything to work with Matt's 1.7.
More concerned with figuring out how to install ROMs, trying to figure out the whole process with SafeStrap.

i typically run ROMs i find here in the development sub-forum, or among those offered within ClockWorkMod (which is necessary to download for backup, wipe and restore capabilities for ROMs)
i bookmarked a thread a while ago that contained a good set of instructions on installing ROMs:
Installation Instructions
NOTE: I use CWMR 5X. Some wipe options below are not included in earlier recovery versions. Still wipe what is available the best you can.
1. Put the Rom on the root of your SD Card
2. Compare MD5 Sum
Windows: MD5 Calculator
LINUX: Open Terminal and type: md5sum [path to the rom on your sd card]
Mac: Open a terminal and type: md5 [path to the rom on your sd card]
3. Reboot to Recovery
4. Wipe these:
Main Screen:
wipe data/factory reset - x2
wipe cache partition - x2
Advanced:
Wipe Dalvik Cache - x3
Wipe Battery Stats - optional
Mounts and Storage:
Format-
/boot - x2
/system - x2
/datadata - x2
/data - x2
/cache - x2
5. Install Rom from SD Card by going back and selecting install from SD card.
6. Reboot and enjoy!

i haven't yet rooted my new razr maxx, just got ICS yesterday. i have some experience doing it on my Dinc previously, i don't imagine much has changed, i just wanted to play around with ICS for a while before i went nuts.

Safestrap

Installed Safestrap for my first time. Opened app, installed recovery, rebooted and hit menu button when I saw Motorola screen. Nothing happened and it rebooted normally. What am I doing wrong?
You are rooted, correct?
Indeed. Bootstrap isn't installed either. I feel like a noob, but it seems simple to use yet it won't work. I'm trying to install a custom ROM and it gives the link to the Safestrap apk so I know it's the right apk.

error while restoring /systemorig!
I just updated my razr CDMA X912to ICS (OTA 6.16.211) and used the DroidRaxrUtility 1.7 (thanks mattlgroff!) to root and install safestrap 2.0. I am going through the motions of backing up and restoring but keep getting the error "error while restoring /systemorig!"
I dont feel confident to add a custom rom on my safe system until i know I can restore on my non-safe system.
Steps taken:
-reboot into recovery (safe system :disabled)
-create backup
-reboot
-make subtle changes to wallpaper and add a few apps
-reboot into recovery (safe system: disabled)
-restore for ext-sd
-locate back up made and confirm restore.
it checks the md5 sum and then begins to restore /systemorig and eventually fails.
Update: I had to do a full wipe and recovery using the blur 6.12.181 stock image. now i am able to restore safestrap backups. I used Mattlgroff's 1.7 utility, option 1

Updating dragonzkiller's CM9 Mod for X2

I have Alpha 4 of dragonzkiller's CM9 mod for the X2 installed but I am confused on how to update it to Alpha 5 (and beyond). When I looked for the patched BSR the link posted by dragonzkiller is dead as well.
If I can get a hold of the patched BSR do I just follow the installation steps exactly as I did when I installed CM9 for the first time? Or are the steps different because it's an update?
For reference, here is where I was trying to get the patched BSR from:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21342515&postcount=1
It should be exactly the same as how you did it the first time. Get into BSR (when you get it) and wipe data/factory reset. Then wipe cache. Then go into advanced and wipe dalvik cache. Then flash the CM9 update zip file then the gapps file. Before you do all that, it would be a good idea to back up all your apps with Titanium Backup. Maybe even do a nandroid backup of your current rom in case something goes wrong, saving you from doing an SBF.
In the future, I would just keep all the necessary files, like the patched BSR, on your SD card for future flashing. Good luck
The link worked for me from my phone. When downloaded locate file using your browser of choice and install apk.

Update: Nevermind, it was just taking longer than usual to boot. I've got the initial Droid setup screen showing right now. :victory:

[Q] X2 unstable after SBF to stock

I am only just getting into the ROM updates. But before I began wanted to test myself to make sure I could get back. So here is where I am:
1 - Rooted x2
2 - installed Titatium backup
3 - Ran Titatium to move applications to SD
4 - Got mixed results
5 - Loaded RSD lite
6 - SBF back to 2.3.4
7 - Ran another SBF with file from Root Junky 2.3.4
Since I did step 3, I have been having issues where the x2 is not stable. Here are a couple of items:
A - droid does not recognize return or seach button all the time
B - phone forces itself to vibrate mode and sets ringer volume to very low
C - droid backs out of applictions on it's own. (like the return button is hit 1/2 a dozen times)
I'm not sure if these are symptoms of a bad phone, or if I have done something to the phone that has to be backed out. I would have thought that SBF back to base would fix it. But I'm not seeing it. Anything you guys could suggest would be great.
Thanks in advance.

some apps may not work as well, on sd card
flashing sbf does not change user data, only wiping data does
try wiping data or removing apps, or using safe mode
links to wiping data and safe mode are in my list
