[Q] Phone not booting/charging - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys!
Today I flashed an early build of CM11 on my I9100 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2523604).
Basically everything went fine, just a few smaller bugs.
But then my phone froze for 2 times so I had to hold down the power button until it shut down. At the first freeze it worked and I could restart my phone but at the second freeze I couldn't restart the phone anymore!
No matter what buttons I hold (power, up-power-home, down-power-home) it just stays black, not even the Samsung logo shows up. When I connect it to the charger the battery icon with the small circle inside appears for some seconds, then goes away, then comes back up and so on...
I really have no idea on what to do so I ask you guys if you have any suggestions
SOLVED: battery was broken

That doesn't look good Did it just froze on its own? Did you do something? Focus on getting to the download mode and flashing stock with odin, if you can't get in the download mode read some instructions for recovering a bricked I9100, you can probably find them at the development sections.

I was just setting everything back up, as i wiped the data before flashing. Unfortunately I can't get in any mode But thank you for your answer, I'll search for bricked S2s

No problem, you can also put the battery out and wait for some time, sometimes it magically works

Already tried that :/ No luck
But I don't think it's related to CM11 directly as it doesn't even get close to booting it.

Yep, you probably got a faulty bootloader or something, this is definitely above the ROM, but i think flashing with odin will solve it, so just try to get in download mode right now.

Just solved my problem
Seems like my battery was broken or something (I had the 2002mAh extended battery inside). I put back the original battery and the phone booted normally!

sgs2 over night dead?

hey,
prehisory:
last night, my phone were somewhere in my bed, cus i fell asleep. the wohle night i'm charging my phone always.
(happened a few times, but i think this time i slept over my phone)
next morning i woke up, picked up the phone & wanted to use it, but it got a freeze screen, was medium-temperatured (not more than a little gaming).
didn't thought anything bad, i pulled out my micro usb charger and forced a restart by contiounsly press power.
problem now:
it booted up as normal but it took really longer than usual. it seemed to freeze sometimes during boot, sometimes i canceled booting, and tried another time..
really really strange behaviors happened, but after a long time just let the phone boot, i got dropped to my homescreeen. all was looking good except the whole status bar just wasn't there. damn.. but ok, tried another 1-2 boots, to see if it get stable after a while but that doens't changed anything..
i can't eitgher get into CWM, just into download mode.
ideas?
i thought overheated but i guess that my phone either would'nt boot up (cpu burned) or stays at black screen (gpu burned)?
so i tried getting into CWM which doesn't worked. then i flashed official samsung ics via odin -> boots up till the coulorized "S" appears, stays in this state, and keep bootlooping (see this when the animation starts by this kind of flowers again)
tried another older stock rom, the same. stock kernel, the same, cf-root with CWM4, the same, i cant even then get in CWM..
any idea??
i'm goin crazy on this.. too much money wasted if this wont work -.-

flash a rom like hydrog3n rom, it doesnt need you to fully wipe so most likely you wont get a boot loop, once youve tried that, post here and ill reply

Which part of "i can't eitgher get into CWM, just into download mode. " did you not understand?
OP:
Just flash a ICS rom for now and later you can try to see if it works or not. (CWM)
Have a good day.
Can you get stock recovery?
From Odin flash cwm, not the CFRoot one. than try it, strange you can get download mode but not recovery.
You have to wipe to get rid of boot loop

so, finally i got it back,
did this howto: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1457458
so now i'm back on stock ICS samsungs rom.
flashed the suitable CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_LPH-v5.2-CWM5.tar
but now i can't access the CWM menue, by pressing power, vol up, home
?
When you say you can't access recovery, what's happening?
PROBLEM SOLVED
YOU FORGOT TO USE THE HOME KEY
1. Put 1 finger on home
2. Put 1 finger on volume up
3. Put 1 finger on top of power
4. Press them all together, and as soon as you see the anything on the screen, let go of everything
>>>>next time try to look up a guide on how to get into cwm recovery<<<<

i did, it doesnt accessed cwm. never mind tryin around solved it.
now all fresh installed off samsungs official, but it isnt as good as before:
still slow bootup, and my status-bar is missing after booting (using latest miui which i also had before this problem, so formerly it was working)
after bootup, touch keys and all other won't response, so if bootup to lockscreen -> wait til screen goes off -> u cant wake the phone, or u have to wait a while maybe it light up for some reason.
any ideas?
hardware damage? i hope not..
no i think you need a good wipeing. but you need to find a way to get into download mode, dont give up try it 3 more time's, dont keep pressing the after the buttons logo apears
try this or its hardware............ you do any deviation and you are on your own.
remove your external sdcard and dont put it back until you are sure your phone works
as per your above post you can access cwm
1: format data / cache / system / sdcard or emmc [system is a must]
2: format preboot / boot [cwm 5.5 or some alternat if option available]
3: download stock i9100 ROM from checkfus (prefer) or sammobile
4: flash using odin, after first boot dial *2767*3855#
5: do not sign in, use for half hour or so, if you think it works sign in to google.
6: do not restore any thing, no titanium backups/restores
7: do not put your sdcard
if your phone works now you know its not hardware now do whatever
thanks mate you strength my opinion and hope that it isn't hardware.
i already had an stock ICS samsung rom on it, with sd mounted all worked fluently and well. (LPH rom). so i flashed a suitable CF-root with CWM, get in there, flashed custom ROM (latest miui + siyah kernel, the same combination i used for month and it worked).
so but what causes these problems i have? before it was fast booting and stable, now slow and the status bar is missing, the rom wont boot up in a normal way, i have to "bully" my phone while boot that i can see the desktop..
?
And your problem suddenly changed!
Custom ROM issues, download again, download something else, wipe, flash again.

Phone will no longer turn on after flashing Rom

I just tried flashing Android Revolution to my phone. I went through the whole set up process. Went to reboot then it went blank. Nothing. I get nothing when I plug it in. The computer doesn't recognize any device attached to it. I've tried removing the battery. If I leave the battery out for an extended period of time, when I place it back in the phone, my camera flash flashes really quick then back to nothing. It's as if the phone is completely dead. When I flashed the rom my battery was at 90%. I've used various roms on different phones and this was the first time I did it to my Galaxy s3 and this is the first time it's ever happened. Talk about frustrating. Any help would be appreciated but I'm not holding my breath. It doesn't look good.
Congratulations!
You're phone is now a piece of brick!
Board failure!
If your phone goes to download mode you can repair it by jtag and if it doesn't power on anyway and it's still under warranty, you can ask them to change your phone or repair that.
Cause there's no way to understand you've installed a custom os

Fairly certain I did but I'm pretty sure it's a moot point now. If I could get any sign of life, I'd use Odin to unbrick and go back to stock. Anyhow for now, it makes a great paper weight.

[Q] Galaxy s3 screen bootloop

Hey guys,
I have a galaxy s3 (I9300) and I've had it rooted for some time now. I started using CyanogenMod 10.2 nightlies a few months ago and they've mostly been fine. The odd issue comes up but I've been able to work it out. So, a few hours ago my phone just turned off of its own accord and started to bootloop, but on the "Samsung Galaxy S3 GT-19300" screen, not the CyanogenMod screen (to clarify, this screen comes up first then the cyanogenmod one usually). I've tried booting into recovery (CWM 6) but it just shows the CWM boot logo thing (that cog with the hat) and then loops back to the galaxy s3 page. I've also tried putting it in download mode, and it seems to stay on the warning page longer than it does anywhere else, but it wont let me actually put in it download mode from there.
I had a look around google and saw people have had the same problem, but everything I could find was when people had flashed a new rom/kernel etc. and something had gone wrong in the process. The weird thing about mine is that I haven't changed anything, even downloaded any new apps, for maybe a week, so it's not like something suddenly changed. I also wasn't using it when it started, it was just sitting on the table next to me.
Usually I can work these things out, but I'm stumped here. Any help would be really appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Nope, if I press the volume up button to go into it, it just goes back to the bootloop. I'll try the battery thing though, thanks!
Nope, it didnt work, I left it out for maybe half an hour and nothings changed :/ anyone else got any ideas?
SDS thread and BootLoop identical questions posted .
What does Product Code say in download mode .
But if you cannot get to download mode then you need a service centre repair .
looks like u are facing SDA but a bit diffrend than a normal SDS.. mine still can go into download mode with blank product name..
If product name is blank in download mode then you got sudden death, consider a phone as a brick. Nothing will help, including repartitioning.
You need to contact service centre.
I'll check it in a minute, but if it is bricked, will any service center actually help me seeing as it's rooted and all?

AFAIK if it's sudden death then it's not possible to detect root and other modified things, or in other words - nobody has money to prove that you have been using unofficial firmware .

Ahhhh, well that is handy then
In terms of a service centre, will samsung have a list of them somewhere so I can find one near me?
So I contacted samsung and they gave me the link to book into a service centre etc, but I just realised that when I try to go into recovery mode, the CWM recovery logo comes up before going back to bootloop. Is there any way to get rid of that so that my root is completely untraceable?

If you can't flash anything with Odin (stock software) then you're screwed. Eventually you can try to enter recovery and flash "eraser" of recovery, but this requires working recovery... So if you actually can enter recovery then you can also flash anything, which will literally delete everything.
In other case, no, no way. But if you're lucky enough you may break it just by leaving your phone on for some hours in bootloop, haha.

To be honest think twice before physically crashing your internal memory, as it may void your warranty at all.
I'd try flashing stock firmware through odin, if it doesn't work I'd try flashing anything through recovery. If both of these methods fail just leave your phone in bootloop and hope that it'll automatically destroy everything...
Seriously though, you can either physically destroy internal memory or leave it in bootloop and hope for the best, eventually send them device in current status. Up to you, because you won't have a possibility to do anything else.

If I send it back to them as it is now it'll take them about 20 seconds I reckon before they see the CWM logo, realise its rooted and send it straight back, so I dont know what I'm gonna do hahah

Bootloop, Not rooted

So my phone started restarting randomly. It will only show the Samsung logo turn off and do the same thing again. Its not rooted and I am pretty sure that its not from something I installed recently (Everything was from the play store and no immediate problems after any of them). When I did the hold volume up,down and power it would only keep on restarting still. But when I just hold volume down it comes to something else that asks if I want to install a new rom. So I was wondering what I should do. Install a new ROM and then revert back ? or will that not work? Also I have a extra I717 with a broken screen I could swap the insides and see if that would help. Also I don't know much about rooting and stuffs. Lemme know what I should do guys! :highfive:

Take out the battery. Insert the battery without touching anything else. Does it just power on itself or does it stay off? If it does turn on, you might have a stuck power button. Let us know what happens
did that too :/
I did that too. It would turn off and on again but only show the Samsung logo then restart again. Also I have the case removed so It cant be the power button being stuck and I have tried the battery thing still nothing.
Whatcha mean? It would turn on by itself once the battery is inserted or you would have to press the power button. Once the battery is out and then inserted back in, it is not supposed to be powered on by itstelf. If it does turn on by itself, then the power button is most likely pressed in.

I have a I717 doing the same thing. (Eg. device boots and seems to function for a about 2 minutes locks up and reboots. )
As the device was stock when it started having this issue I figured it might be an OS issue Factory reset to it would leave the device booting to optimize applications then reboot. Checked power button checked it was clean.
Also staied on when in recovery without issue.
As I figured this was an OS issue I installed CWM
Downloaded and installed SlimBeam
Device booted and completed instlation and operated for about 2 minutes and rebooted.
Device will does not have any issues with in CWM or Odin. I
I read alsowhere that the internal SD-Card filesystem might have become corrupted and need to be reformated however I have yet to find instruction or confirmantion.
Anyone have some ideas?
.
to Tal Star.
1. When you were in CWM and were about to flash, did you wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache and dalvik cache then do the flash? Or just flash?
2. So either os it would do the same? Stay on for about two minutes, then reboot? Would it reboot back into the os and do the same?

So right now you can boot up into the os and it will turn off in 2 minutes? or just given enough time? Will it boot into the os each time? I dont think ill have an answer for it, but i bet someone that does will want to know the same things to possibly narrow it down

Naw it starts optimzing the Applications and lasts a few minutes reboots locks up and starts again. SlimBean completes the process and makes it all the way to the launcher but after a same amount of time it reboots. back to the launcher. (Slim bean has a resonable number less Apps and that's why it completes or is my best guess)

I really wouldnt know about that. Hopefully someone will come by and help you out. I wonder being on the latest recovery would help if youre not already and then doing it all over? Hopefully someone more experienced will chime in.
Could be a corrupt download.
Again, I always flash rom 2 times. You can get different reactions from 2 seperate flashes. 2 time seems to get a more solid installation.
Wait your 10 and reboot.
Still think its a power button issue. It can act normal but still be the problem. Hows you battery?

I dobut it's a download. I use CWM to flash from an external SD card. However I did try reflashing like you suggest with no change. The battery is fine as far as I can tell, like I said it will stay online in recovery on battery for what seems like forever.

Nope I am working on the one I have with the SIM Card out & SD card out.
happens
So what I done so far is taken out the sim and sd card. Took out the battery put it back in and when I power to turn it on It vibrates (like it normaly would when it starts) then shows Samsung logo turns off and loops. I tried doing the hold volume up down power thing and it does not work. But what does work is when I hold volume down it takes me to a custom OS thing. I don't know what that is but I cant get there. So maybe put a custom OS in and then revert it back?
So I used Odin and put 4.1.2 Jelly Bean Official Firmware but its still doing what it was doing before.Used 3.07 and it said it passed fine. Should I try a different rom or something else? Also the first time it starts up after installing the rom it goes past the logo to the ATT ball animation logo freeze there and turns of then when I turn it on from there it will loop at the samsung logo again.
You can try the firmware upgrade and initialization feature in kies. It will return your device to the original factory firmware, software, and settings. If it still loops after that you have hardware issues.
Ok so I guess im making progress now. After I put the stock rom (Different one from befor) It DIDNT BOOT LOOP well it did but only looped 3 times then stoped. Also there are 2 Samsung logos. the frist one was just normal logo ( same one I was having befor ) then the screen turns off and shows the same logo but this time its a little bigger its white with a blue glow! ( Made it further this time but still crashes afterwards) BUT now I can actualy get into the Manual mode. I did a wipe data/factory reset in that mode which didnt help i wiped the cache too. Still didnt help.
Now in manual mode my computer does recognize that something is connected to it now but it tries to configure it and keeps on failing. And so samsun kies cant connect to it either.
But from where I started at its a improvement
My Note is doing the same thing too now, but I know the reason why. I was trying to install clockworkmodrecovery so I would be able to upgrade to jellybean and I think I flashed a kernel that was meant for rooted phones (pretty dumb of me I guess). So now the phone is stuck and I'm going to try to install the original jellybean 4.1.2 for rogers and hopefully that will fix it.
As long as you can get into Odin download mode, your phone can be fixed.

Frozen boot loop..frozen!? Tried everything..

Hey Guys, im desperate..
two days ago i charged my phone overnight as i normally do. Woke up and it was in SOD, which happens all the time (agni kernal, no fix yet).. Pulled the battery, but phone wouldnt boot. Turns out, it freezes during booting resulting in what appears to be a frozen boot loop.
Then i tried to plug it into my recharger, and it was showing a grey battery icon and was frozen on that screen always, the screen doesnt turn off, the battery icon isn't showing that its charging. doesnt change, just shows the same empty battery grey icon with the refresh circle-arrow in the middle.
I tried taking the battery out leaving it out for 5 minutes, draining the battery from the phone by holding the power button for 10 seconds, then trying to charge the phone. Same issue, only showing the grey battery icon when trying to charge and it never changes or goes away.
SO i tried to boot up the phone, but it wont go past the samsung text logo.
I tried entering recovery, but it just freezes on the samsung text logo.
I can not enter download mode either. So ihave no way to run odin from what i can tell.
Im losing my mind here, ive tried almost everything i can think of. And would really appreciate any help on this. It feels like a hard core brick.. I LIVE on my phone due to work and im losing money every day i dont have it. DESPERATELY need this. HELP!!
DatacomGuy,
A usb jig will probably be able to force the phone into download mode again so you can restore it with Odin. If you're up to it, you can do a Google search to get instructions on how to make your own.... or you can buy one online pretty cheap. Here's one on eBay (USB JIG) that looks good with good feedback from the seller.
Thank you.. Ill order one today and report back.
What could have gone wrong you guys think? How did the phone just do this?
I guess no way to get my pics off huh?
I hope the jig will work for you so you can restore the phone back to stock 4.1.2 and start over fresh.
I'm not sure what would have caused the phone to have started boot looping like that. My guess would be that something got corrupted.
There's a thread in the general section on how to Odin flash the stock recovery onto the phone so you can wipe cache and do a factory reset.... (EDIT: Click here to go to the thread) . This is a long shot, but if you can get the phone back into download mode with the jig, you could try installing the stock recovery and just wiping cache without doing the factory reset... then see if you can get the phone to boot up so you can recover stuff off of it.
As far as the pictures go, they may have been saved to the external sd card. You could pop the sd card into another phone if you've got another functioning phone laying around... or use a sd card adapter to mount it straight onto your computer so you can check.
The jig did the trick.. thank god..
The flashing stock recovery did not work. I ended up going back to stock firmware.. 4.1.2 i think..
Thank God i have this back.. Thanks SO much for your help.

That's great to hear. Too bad the stock recovery didn't work, but I'm glad the jig worked and you were able to fix your phone.
