Would Installing An "International" RUU Make My Phone Better? - AT&T HTC One (M7)

Hi, I'm new to this device, as a matter of fact I don't have it yet, its in the mail....I purchased an HTC ONE Google Edition At&t phone and am going to use it on Straight Talk. I had a HOX+ but couldn't get WiFi tether to work and tried multiple Roms and other advice. Anyway, I was encouraged to get the ONE because there is a lot more development on it. I was wondering if I first UNLOCK the device from its carrier and ROOT it and get S-OFF, could I install an "International" RUU and firmware to get rid of any preconfigured settings to At&t and not COMPLETELY RUIN my device and still have LTE ?

Is the ATT One, locked bootloader ?

Is the ATT One, locked down like they did to their version of the Galaxy S4 ?
Or can the ATT One, be rooted and flash ROM's and kernels with CWM or TWRM ? I used to have the One X, and that thing sucked for flashing, due to being S-On, and having to use the bootloader and boot.img to flash with Command prompt stuff, etc... really sucked. Would like to have no S-On crap and have to flash through the bootloader,
I just like to reboot to the Recovery only, flash the zip, and be done. Can that be done with the ATT One, or would I need he "Developer Edition" only to do that ?

Thanks, was thinking on possibly getting the ATT One, and hopefully we will get a port of the "Google Edition" ROM shortly after it's release next month ? And would like to flash it through recovery, not having to go through the command prompt and need a boot.img file, and all that crap.

I also am curious if the At&t HTC One bootloader is unlockable through htcdev. I have read conflicting reports about it. can anyone clear it up? I am hoping to unlock the bootloader on my At&t HTC One but I want to know if it's ok to do. I bought my phone two weeks ago and I don't want to brick it.

The S4 will have a bigger dev community simply due to the fact Samsung is a bigger/more popular manufacturer...but theres still plenty of devs for the One from what I've seen.

I found this "The interesting thing is that these instructions work fine only for the international version of HTC One, and if you have the AT&T variant, the official method won’t work, since AT&T didn’t allow that (carriers do that, don’t they?). That’s rather odd and annoying, because the official bootloader unlock worked on the AT&T variant as well until the device actually hit the shelves and AT&T forced HTC to go back to a more closed approach. Of course, there would be other, unofficial unlock methods coming out pretty soon, but until they do, AT&T users are out of luck." on Redmond Pie "How to Unlock HTC One" page. (Can't post link)
I interpreted this as saying that I am out of luck.

backup and root

Indeed there is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2265618
but if you really dont feel comfortable with doing this stuff, by all means don't. Some things (S-off for instance, which is required to flash upgraded firmwares not specific to your carrier branded device) have a high potential to turn your new toy into a paperweight if done incorrectly. Just read up, follow the instructions to the letter, and come back here with questions. Most of the time someone will be nice enough to assist you

I do wanna root just so I can get rid of this app that's keeping my phone awake. I've read about the sunshine root. Some of the stuff I read is a bit confusing. On the website it says that the update won't require towelroot (is that the right term?) for me to be able to use sunshine. But in here it says that I need to root my device before using it.

You need to slow down, as it seems that you are rushing ahead with very little understanding of what you are doing. I recommend any newcomer (even experienced HTC users) to this phone spend at least a couple hours reading and learning before doing any mods to the phone. If a total n00b to Android, root, etc. then more time should be taken to research and learn. Reading includes the sticky threads, basic guides, and also my Index thread has a lot of information organized: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2751432
Sunshine is an s-off method, not root.
If you unlocked the bootloader, all you need to root is flash SU/SuperSU or a rooted ROM. S-off is not required for root.
Backing up the stock ROM, recovery, etc. is not required for the AT&T version, as you can RUU back to stock.
Also, AT&T (directly through them, not HTC) will only void your warranty for physical or water damage; not for mods.
I read some more and I rooted my phone already. Thanks for the link

Redpoint is 100% correct. If this all seems foreign to you, or anyone else for that matter, research, research then research some more! Before I do ANYTHING that I haven't done in the past (hell I have flashed many firmwares and it STILL scares me), I do alot of reading and see if its something I really want to do, plus it will help prevent me from coming back and saying "Halp, my phone is a brick now!". Once I have a basic understanding to it, then I go on

Personally I use ARHD 10.2, Its as close to stock as any other, but I have been using Mikes roms since my M7. In order to use it without any of the annoying boot bugs etc, you will have to flash a new firmware but that is one I would recommend, but also read up on firmware flashing and the steps to do it properly

One handed mode? General opinion on m8?

Hey all, was wondering if the m8 has some version of 1 handed mode (like the gs5) either stock or included in Roms.
(Somewhat hard to reach the far end of the screen when I tried a demo model & I text very frequently )
If not, has anyone tried http://www.phonearena.com/news/How... handed mode tried it again and it fits fine.
Also a bit curious about what the deal with having a developer edition to convert to is,
Does this mean that we can get new updates from HTC before att adds in their bloatware?
Or does it mean something else significant?

Yup, that's pretty much spot-on. No bloat or carrier branding. Updates come faster. The DE already had the 4.4.3 OTA rolled out maybe 2 weeks ago or so. AT&T OTA is supposed to be "soon", but who knows when?

Good to see you here, too.
Any ROM meant for the GSM version should be compatible (stay away from the CDMA Sprint/Verizon specific ROMs). Although I'd exercise some common-sense caution and check the specific ROM thread to make sure AT&T is supported, or at least confirmed in the thread by AT&T users to work.
If you look at the ViperOne thread in this (AT&T) forum, the download section just links to the "main" thread in the "international/generic" M8 forum anyway. Which then links to the Venom Team download page, where you will see there is just one version for all GSM M8 versions.
GPE can mean one of 2 things, either just flashing a GPE-based custom ROM, or doing a "full conversion" which entails flashing a special RUU. The full conversion changes the partitioning on the device, and the only real advantage is a full GPE "stock" experience, which also means official GPE updates. If you don't care about that, and just want to try out the GPE experience, I'd suggest flashing a GPE-based custom ROM, which does not require changing the partitions.

Just got my device & I love it so far.
The last question I've got at the money is, I've heard some devices can't get bootloader unlocked through normal means , and have pay for the exploit,?
How do you know which version you have? (is it a certain hboot or something
Or do you just have to try the normal exploit & see if it works?

I think its just Verizon that blocks bootloader unlock, and S-off is required to get custom recovery on it. Bootloader unlock is not an issue with the AT&T version though "normal" means (HTCDev.com), regardless of software version, hboot, etc.
S-off is another issue. Firewater works for some older AT&T M8's, but not on newer ones. Its not definite whether its software number, hboot, etc. that determines this. Just try firewater, and if it doesn't work you will have to pay $25 for sunshine if you want s-off.

I believe what he's saying is that if you have an unlocked (international) version of the M8 you wont get updates from AT&T just because that's the carrier you're using. You'll get the international models updates.

This is why you wont get updates from att, your not on their network, doesnt matter if phone is att based, the updates come from the carrier your using. Unlocked/US Developer devices are different they are supported directly ftom htc not a specific carrier. If your cid is CWS__001, You have an ATT branded phone, unlocked or not you wouldnt get any updates from ATT.

Are you sure? So why they sell unlocked devices?
That's sound weird to me..

So what you suggest me ?
Can I change it not to be at&t? If I can I'll be happy for some
quick understandable guide please.
Look in the at&t development section and you will find a guide for either "Dev edition" or "GPE" conversion .good luck with
S-OFF

Not that one is better so much as what you prefer.I like the light bare bone AOSP of GPE .the Dev edition is still sense and it's supposed to get updates faster than carriers like at&t,T-Mobile

Do you mean "bumped," with TWRP recovery?
If so, you'll still get notified about the OTA. The OTA should fail to run, but on my last device some people had the KitKat update run even though they had a custom recovery, and it screwed up all sorts of things. So don't accept the OTA if you get it.
To make sure you don't get the OTA, see this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/development/psa-stop-taking-ota-updates-update-t2909412
If by "unlocked" you mean something else, please explain.
As long as the phones system is totally original with no mods or deleted files you should get ota...depends on how it was unlocked.

Im sure if its unlocked it can still get ota by flashtool. If system is changed. But as far as root or bump. Certainly can. It can be bumped stumped etc. And flashtool back for ota. Depending how it was unlocked. Meaning if it was rooted to unlock then will have to flashtool back im almost sure. Again if your wanting to make sure it stays unlocked usually once unlocked it will stay. I guess it will depend how. And if oem unlocked then im sure re locking is not much of an option. However you should be fine from many of these worries. Hope not to confuse you. Im very tired. Lol. Trying to cover all bases. There are many ways to unlock many devices on many carriers so its really hard to say. But there are mostly generalized options one would believe.

Thanks for such a detailed answer,
Now when I get the bhone should i be unlocking Bootloader ?
Please suggest me an easy way to ROOT this device?
Which is the most customizied Rom available on this Sprint Thread, I am sure I should not be flashing any other Carrier Roms or International Version of ROM which may Brick the device.
My Friend is claiming that is factory unlocked,Is there a way to find if device is Factory unlocked ??
