[Q]InternalSD when flashing custom rom - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Good day! I just want to ask some few questions.
I flashed my first custom rom on my S3 which is S4 Revolution 9.1 I used the FULL WIPE option in AROMA.
But after flashing my contents of InternalSD was there, like the flashable zips I put there, the EFS.img, etc.
I want to ask if is this OK?
Does the FULL WIPE function dont include InternalSD?
Or I need to manually format my InternalSD?
BTW, I have backup of my apps in Titanium and NANDroid.

What the wipe does depends on the script it runs, sounds like yours doesn't include the internal sd.
If you want to wipe it then format it manually. If you are staying on the same base e.g 4.2 to 4.2 then just delete the android directory, changing base then I'd format.

I came from stock 4.1.2 the to S4 revolution 9.1 which is 4.3. I choose the wipe in the aroma of the ROM installer.
Does the files from the internalSD can have conflict with my new rom?

How to make a totally clean install?

After trying different roms and testing different things i realized that a full wipe does not clear everything of your current setup.
If you use root explorer for example and just take a look at your folders and files you will see that there are many files left from older roms.
What is the fastest way to make a totally clean installation with a custom rom (cm9 nightly or rr for example)?
I found an older tutorial here but i think it might be outdated.
Is there some kind of script that i can flash before installing the new rom (that cleans everything but efs files and recovery files for example?).
Or do i have to get a sammy stock rom with 3 parts and pit file and re-partition with odin and flash pack to a custom rom right after ?
in CWM
under mounts/storage
format system,cache,data
then flash rom
Really clean install? Flash rom through Odin. Everything will be wiped.

No as you said it just clears data and cache, that is wiped with full wipe /factory reset anyways. And system is also just the system folder.
The other folders in your root will not be touched by this and will still remain on the phone. But i cant really tell if they are used or not anymore. I can only tell by the content and the creation date that of the folders and files, that a lot of these have to be from older setups.

What kind of firmware do i need then? I think if i flash without the re-partion tick in odin options the old files would also stay there. and i need a firmware with 3 parts to flash because you need a pit file to do that.
Ofc i would like to have exactly the same partition sizes as before on my phone if i have to repartition.
So i guess i need somebody who has some knowledge with odin and 3 part firmwares.
download the stock rom from samfirmware.com(after signup)!
flash the "md5" file using odin
after fresh install of stock rom, goto settings>storage>format usb storage and format sd card if u have one!
then u can do a factory reset again and you have a clean wiped phone!

Are you sure that a 1 part firmware from sammobile will wipe all the internal data and not just update and overwrite the new ones? (im not talking about the sd card, im talking about the system data that you can just see with a root explorer for example).
If you're performing a wipe data/factory reset alongside wiping the cache and Dalvik cache, you are performing a clean install. The residual files you're seeing are stored on the internal storage (the /sdcard partition), if you wish to clear them, go into recovery, mounts and storage, and format the /sdcard partition. Viola!
Also, wrong section. All questions should be posted in Q&A. Flagged.

I attached some screenshots now about the files that i mean.
Im not talking about the content of the internal or external sd card.
Look at the misc, lib ,res or proc and preload folders.
Also the script files.
Some files might be related to the kernel settings of course.
Im trying to go on a stock rom now and call "*2767*3855# " for a hardreset and see if that works
EDIT:
Nope the hard reset didnt work, all the files are still there.
Where do i get a ics rom with 3 parts and a pit file that i can temporary install to clean my root folder? or is there a tutorial here somewhere could follow?
External SD not visible after new ROM installation
I rooted my galaxy s2 just a day before and faced an issue. After rooting I installed jelly bean 2.6 ROM(Resurrection and remix) and found my GPRS not working and then I did a factory reset, but unfortunately phone got dead and then I removed the battery and re booted after some time. This only restored 98 applications out of 113 in this new ROM. However, I re flashed the ROM again and all the applications got back to normal, but my SD card was not to be seen after this second flash, before factory reset my external SD card was readable(with the new ROM)

the external SD it's mounted on /emmc so, there are your files. You can access to this folder with any file explorer (even the stock one). Just open the file manager, select the "mnt" option on the top, the one between the Home icon and SD icon, inside you can find the emmc folder.
Well i guess i could compare my files with the files of somebody else with rr and delete some of them manually

Since you are currently running CyanogenMod, then follow these instructions:
1. On your phone
-Boot your phone to CWM recovery
-Wipe data/factory reset
-boot your phone to download mode
2. On your Pc
- unzip the downloaded firmware,
- flash the tar.MD5 via Odin

[Q] Flashing 4.2.X back to 4.1.X

I think I may have just gotten lucky with this based on a couple of the forums I've read, but I wanted to know how this effects your phone. I've flashed the PAC-man Rom then went back to JellyBean Rom. I've read that you are suppose to flash something to do the downgrade between flashing roms like this.
What is it that you are suppose to flash?
What happens if you don't?
Any feedback is greatly appreciated!
there is a return to stock zip in sbrissens cm10 thread that your suppose to flash before returning to touchwiz. have not ran any latest 4.2.2 roms so im not sure exactly why that needs to be done.
4.2 adds multi-user support which changes the directory structure in the /data/media folder and makes your user storage unavailable to 4.1.x and prior. The restore script moves it back to the single user style so the older ROMs can see it.
Preciate the responses. I'll go look for that zip to flash.
I must have got lucky then because I haven't had any issues going between roms like that.

Just out of curiosity, would doing a complete wipe, dalvik, factory reset, data and then wiping internal storage after backing up do the trick in lieu of flashing the restore script? Wouldn't that fix the structure once a TW rom is installed? Again, I'm just curious.

Do you need to back up your stock ROM only once?

Hello,
I have a question. I backed up my stock rom before installing a custom rom. Now i want to install another rom, so this time do I also have to back up the rom or its already backed up as I did it once the first time? So now that if I want to move to a new rom, i just
Select Wipe Data/Factory Reset. Confirm on the next screen.
Select Wipe Cache. Confirm on the next screen.
Select Advanced and then select Wipe Dalvik Cache.
and I should be good to go? Any other steps?
Best wishes,
Marc
Nandroid makes a snapshot of your entire phone, so you can go back to the exact moment in time when you made it.
Unless you think you'll want to go back to the current custom ROM you are using then no, don't bother.
Factory reset won't wipe the system partition, you would be better off flashing Philz recovery which includes a wipe option for use between ROM's. It's a good idea to have the right modem & RIL for your country ready just in case your new ROM has the wrong modem included..
Make sure you have backed up the entire efs partition to your pc, dropbox etc.

Thank you for your answer. I just have one more question. I did copy the efs folder, but when I open it in computer its just a blank folder. Does it have to be like that or did I copy it wrong?

Just copying the folder across in explorer won't save you if you need to restore, use Mike Skip's SG3 tool, the app from market or again Philz recovery to snapshot the entire partition. I'd advise having at least one version you can flash via odin.

It's not necessary, but you should always back up your ROM before flashing a new one.
It's a personal thing, but I only do so when I do a major leap, like from Sammy to cm or cm to Sammy or one of those to miui or something like that. Other wise I don't because I like having free space on my SD cards.

Question about how to total whipe

After coming from stock I rooted and installed imperium, in it's aroma installer I choose to have nexus 5 walpapers, then after I reflashed stock rom via odin and rooted, then reflashed a custom rom in the path emulated/0/0/imperiun there are about 15nexus 5 walls, if I delete them after a restart they reappear, if I delete hem through my laptop after a reboot they are still there. I always do a ful whipe when installing a new rom, eaven when I update, but they are still there. Is there a way to get rig of them, or to format the emulated folder when I install a new rom?

Yes there is a way to totally format your whole phone (even the system folder). MegaWipe can do that: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1832326
Note: MegaWipe will delete your ROM from your phone as well, so you will need to download a ROM and place it in your external sd and after flashing MegaWipe, flash the ROM without rebooting the phone. Because there will be no system to load if you install no ROM.
This is one way to do that. I think there are other ways to do this also.
Thank you.

[Q] TWRP/Nandroid question

Hi, I'm not exactly new to XDA, however my Note is my first real Android phone. My question is this: If I want to make a backup of the entire phone, so that I can install a new ROM, then restore the phone to exactly the way it was before I installed said ROM, what do I need to select to back up in TWRP? I'm wanting to play with the Lolipop build for i717. I already have a good EFS backup stored separately just in case, so I need to select System, Data, and Boot, and this will save the kernel and the ROM contents, correct? ...and when I restore this backup it will be just like I left it, right?
Also, what do I need to select to Wipe to perform a 'Full Wipe' as is recommended before install?
Thanks for your time.

Use gimmeitorilltell's version of twrp as some specifics have not made it to official version. I've had great results using 2.8.0.0 though I believe some newer versions are working now as well. I backup android secure as well. Not sure if this is necessary, it was the default setting. Wipe is generally accepted as factory reset usually followed by going to advanced wipe and checking cache, and dalvik cache and wiping these again. Then install your new rom zip, gapps zip if required, wipe cache and dalvik cache and reboot. First boot will take a long time. Possibly as long as 5 minutes or more. Once booted let rom settle for at least 10 minutes before adjusting any settings. Good luck.
Edit: Your backed up rom system will restore everything back to the way it was if you desire to go back (installed apps and settings as well).

Thanks @developweb, works perfectly. Also thanks to @gimmeitorilltell for his TWRP and Lollipop ROM.
