Can't send sms, Verizon has no clue. - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

So to make a long story short, for the past few weeks I have not been able to send sms. It happened all of a sudden and with no changes to cause it. I can send mms, receive and make calls, but no sms. Took it to Verizon yesterday with the thought in mind that I had a faulty simple card, they tried another one and nothing. Factory reset, nothing. Spent two hours watching them try tthe same things I did. Then they gave up and said to refer to samsung. My question is, is this a software issue? And will rooting and throwing a rom on do the trick? Also is there a root method for after the 4.3 update at the moment?

Check to see if you are on Global or CDMA/LTE/EVDO
settings/more networks/mobile networks/network mode
I was having issues receiving MMS messages and set this from global back CDMA/LTE/EVDo and that fixed it.
Worth a try

Did you try a factory reset???

Hey bud... had the same issue. Over and over for quite some time (since before owning the S4).
Only real fix was to reset the phone (stock, rooted, or custom rom)... only to have it crop up later, again and again.
Last call to VZW and the girl had me swap my SIM and get a new phone, this was while I was on vacation and when I got home, the phone hard bricked on the MJ7 update. So I am not sure what is what and not even sure if it will crop up again. I haven't seen the issue for a few weeks though.
I do have a little, non scientific, theory on this.
Everytime I have had this occur that I can recall, I was traveling from my home. Maybe 100 miles or more. VZW messaging (web) never got any of the messages and the VZW rep can see the messages come into their system and the system believes it is delivering the messages. This also occured with the GNex.
I am assuming that one of two things are going on here.... something is messed up with my provisioning (and your's maybe) or there is an issue with handoffs.

A friend of mine went through the same thing until I did this:
Turn off the radios one by one including: bluetooth, mobile network, and then do airplane mode. Make sure you're on the CDMA/EvDO/LTE settings instead of global. Reboot the phone. Turn off airplane mode, and then turn on your mobile network and give it about a minute. Then try sending SMS.

Damn ... I was hoping that was the ticket. Your phone might need to be provisioned. *228 to make sure it has updated PRLs. Failing that, you may need to call up VZW.

Not supposed to *228 our phones. Something about possibly frying the sim? Read and read and read.

It does not fry the sim anymore it just puts you in a 3g prl, after a week or to or after you cut your phone off it will auto update back to 4g prl

mb use odin and re-flash the stock rom? I never seen/faced issue like this but would like to help to find the solution, just in case I might deal with such thing later.

Just wanted to give this a bump to see if someone has any ideas

another bump. samsung doesn't want to send me a replacement and suggest i find a loner phone to put my sim in while they have it for over a week. i can't do that. Rooted the phone and put a rom on it to see if that would do the trick and nothing. Any suggestions before i argue with samsung?

It is a known Verizon network issue. There is people way above the front line staff working on it. They don't tell the front line staff this because since it's just limited to aosp and they only support stock, unrooted phones they tell people there is no issue. They could send you ten replacements phones and they all will do the same thing. It's not the phone, it's not the AOSP rom, and it's not your sim card. It's a bizzare issue that makes all aosp roms ever made not work in certain areas, mostly central pa but others as well. There is another xda user working directly with the engineers providing me updates. I will let you know when we find out a resolution.
Here is my thread which is for the Note 2 with the same issue. There is also links that others have posted in my thread with the exact same symptoms since 2/20/14.

Serious Data Problem

So long story short, I opened a new line and swapped my hardware to the new line for the TB on my line. After I left BB, I called Verizon to do the swap. They said they couldn't because my SIM card was programmed for the original line and I had to go back to a VZW to get a new provisioned SIM, which I did. It worked when I left, but since late last night, I have no 4G or 3G. Any ideas what the issue could be?
Oh and when the phone goes into sleep mode and I awaken it, the 4G is lit up and then shortly after, no data.

when i first got my phone, the original 4g card wasnt working. turns out is was just bad... they swapped it for a new one and all is well. so i'm assuming u've already tried to reboot and see if that helps. maybe that card is bad as well? hmmm....u should go back to see if they can swap out to another one.
When I was in the store getting mine they were talking about how they'd been having allot of issues activating phone because of the large demand was causing a backup in the switch. There was a guy that walked in about 5 min before me and his would not activate, but then mine activated perfectly. So I guess it was intermittent. Makes me wonder if you got caught up in that backup when you activated the second sim.

Should I go back?
I would do a battery pull (pretty sure you've already done that) and remove and reseat the sim as well (if you haven't already) and if that doesn't work I'd reach out to Cust Service. May be something easily fixable in the system, save ya the time and gas of driving to the store.
maybe try a *228 and press 1 to program .... just a thought, I hate having to deal with customer service
I could be wrong but I thought *228 did not work with these phones because of the sim card.

My 4g would drop off randomly and I just assumed it was my area's LTE working out it's kinks. Then after doing the manual 3g only switch, the data was still randomly dropping off, so I was up to try anything out.
I pulled the battery and reseat the Sim like you said and so far so good...mind explaining that?, lol, doesnt make sense to me.
thanks in advance

Wow, exact same experience I had yesterday. I went in late, like 5:00 PM. I had to wait a while for someone to actually help me, but once I said what phone I wanted it wasn't more than 20 minutes to get the transaction done.
Do NOT do *228.
I had this same problem today when activating my phone. Just call Verizon and they will walk you through getting it activated correctly.
Ironically, on my way to VZW it suddenly started working. LOL. "clog" in the system? I don't know, but it's fast as hell!
I don't have 4G in my area yet but I got the TB anyway. I love it. But the 3G does the same thing, just keeps dropping out.
This keeps happening to me also. Its very Frustrating. What the number to VZW Customer Service?

No need for *228 because the sim card now is provisioned with auto PRL for when the phone does enter 3G service
DO NOT EVER ESN SWAP THE PHONE TO A NON 4G
Just like mentioned initially, the sim card and phone are designed for 4G lines only so swapping back to your old 3G device or onto another line is a bad idea.
If your trying to do an alternative upgrade and the store your at is full of morons, ask them if they could possibly do a Customer Provided Equipment Upgrade and then then ring out the phone in their point of sale system with the contract you have signed.
Until VZ Corporate figures out another way to do alternative upgrades, this is the only method I have found to get around this
Yes in many cases (including me) we have found it to take a while for 3G or 4G to stay on. Give it time. dial #832 to prove your phone can make calls and receive text messages. anywhere from 10 to some cases an hour before the phone is in full lock.
If your still having a problem go out for a walk or drive, heard switching between towers can help push the process.
I had the exact same problem as the OP, to fix it Verizon made me go back to best buy, you have to get the phone exchanged for a new one and then they have to call in to setup the new untouched TB on the line you want it on. Believe me it took 3 hours for them to finally fix it, and that's what did it.

Could be APN settings. I don't know them off hand, but they are listed in post 2 of the miui thread.
If it happens on multiple ROMs it could also be a bad SIM card. Does it do it on pure stock? If so, try a new SIM card.

This. I haven't seen this issue reported often, and in the past, it's turned out to be an app interfering with the connection. If not, it's likely an apn issue.

I've had the same thing happen to me on other AOSP roms too. On both the SGS2 and my captivate.
I just switched to iscrewed to see if the prob is still there. Its hard to reproduce the bug, but it happens when i go from either:
1. being connected to wifi for a long time and then leaving that area, mobile data doesnt turn back on
2. being in a bad service area for a long time, and then leaving it, mobile data doesnt turn back on.
The worst thing about it is i use google voice for texts, and thats usually how i can tell that it cut out, because i stop getting texts from people.
I love android and google, but honestly if problems like this dont get ironed out, then as long as the next iphone has a decent size screen im probably switching over.
FYI this has occurred when i had the bare minimum installed on my phone, and i never use any ridiculous battery saving apps.

ill try this out tomorrow. just now when checking my email i had to turn on airplane mode and back off to get data to work.
also, i tried the apn settings on the first page of the miui thread and it didnt work. i tried those settings on miui, wiui, cm7, and unnammed but they all made it so that my internet didnt work at all.
so just to clarify, i shouldnt haft to change apn settings and my phone shouldnt be doing this on non stck roms, right? sim is likely the problem? this has gotten really old really quick and its embarrassing when im trying to show my friends something but my phone isnt working.
Your phone should work fine on any ROM you find here. Mine does. I never have to play with APNs, even on miui. I never have to play with airplane mode or power cycle. But, when my SIM was bad I would drop data connectivity all the time. Calls would fail (outbound only), and other glitchy reception issues. Sometimes airplane mode fixed it, sometimes power cycle, sometimes airplane mode on, power cycle, and all times it was temporary. Its worth a try, shouldn't cost anything to get a new SIM. If they give you trouble at the store just tell them you called 611 and they told you to go in for a new one. If that doesn't fix it go warranty route for a new phone.

Those APN settings have worked fine for me on both CM7 and every Sammy ROM I've used. I always have (unrelated) problems with MIUI, so I can't verify that one.
So i went today and got a new SIM. Its been about 9 hours, but no problems yet. Time will tell if it works, but im willing to bet that was the problem, and this is why.
When i went to get my sim, the guy there told me that when ATT started rolling out 4g phones (which includes 3.5g) many employees had trouble with their data switching on and off until they switched their sim cards.
Then i started thinking to myself - I've had the problem about as long as I had my SGS2, and only had the problem with AOSP roms on my captivate - then i made the connection.
When i used a stock, or stock based rom on my captivate, i had no problems. The second i used an international ROM, or an AOSP rom is when i would have the issues. What is the difference between the roms............. The ATT rom doesnt have hspa+ enabled, so using my old "3g" sim card i was fine. No 3.5g to connect to to cause problems. CM and international Roms would use that new 3.5g network and would then screw up.
That is my theory anyway, and if it turns out true it would have solved one of my biggest annoyances with android. (or at least my android experience)
fingers crossed
i too went in and got a new sim. my phone service actually quit working before going in. id get calls and i could hear them but they couldnt hear me. i replaced the sim and all is good. where miui would hang and data would freeze and id haft to redo the airplane mode trick, it would just hang for a sec or 2 and then start downloading again. ive only had it hang 2x now and i think its because it might be switching from hspa to 3g or even wifi.
so for the sim card thing worked. if it fails in the mean time, ill come back to this and give an update. thanks for suggesting it being the sim card cause i wouldnt have thought of that.
I'm another day strong without any problems. I don't know of its due to the new sim or because i switched to a Samsung based rom. I should switch back to test, but I'm loving the speed of icsrewed right now.
If i had to guess i would say it's due to the sim, and if so, there should be a sticky somewhere that says to make sure your not using an older 3g sim card. Would have saved me months of aggravation.
Will report back after a few more days. In a week or so I'll switch back to cm to see if it fixes it there as well.
That's one reason I generally buy my phones at the att store (authorized reseller, but dedicated to att phones). Usually they will price match, and they know things like that. My SIM went bad when I had my captivate. Later when I upgraded to a faux G phone the att rep knew I would need a new SIM, and replaced it then, even though it was only a month old. They also knew the "3G" data plan needed to be converted to a "4G" (still unlimited) plan on their system for me to get data.
You don't get that kind of assistance when you buy at Walmart, online, etc.

Can't find phone.apk.... I deleted the cache of dialer.apk and the problem still remains. I also completely turned off call blocking and everything.
When I answer a call, it immediately disconnects.
This is interesting to hear. My wife and i are both on rogers. She has a rooted and rommed captivate and i have a rooted and rommed nexus s. We are both having the same issues for that last couple days. Weird stuff. Never happened before.
I put my SIM card into my wife's S2 (also stock and rooted) and it works properly. Accepts incoming calls. So it must be something with my device specifically and not network related. Strange... I've removed any possible suspect apps to no avail so far. Perhaps a core app update is the culprit.
Ya I am confused lol. I have been on the same rom for a few weeks now. Just started happening to both of us all of a sudden. Not sure if it is a certain app that we both have installed and its screwing up our phones? Just not sure at all.

Please let me know if you find a solution. I am trying a few things but no luck
I've been having the same issue with incoming calls all weekend, in my case I was able to rule out hardware by swapping SIMs with another Rogers phone.
On the phone a few times with Rogers Tec Support and I was told this was an issue on their end, from what I'm told it's related to the Rogers One Number service which I did register for a couple of months back. Although I don't use the RON service anymore it's still active on my account.
I just had Tec Support remove it from my account and am just now getting my incoming calls again.

This may be it. I recently signed up for Rogers One Number but never use it. That's the difference me and the wife's S2. She's not registered for One Number. Hmmmm..... But it's weird that my SIM accepts incoming calls on her device though.

[Q] Help No Service.

I have been searching for 3 days trying to find the problem. I have an AT&T Galaxy s 2 that I rooted using the Zedomax root through ODIN. I unlocked it to use for my T-mobile service. Everything was working fine for months. Then one day I woke up to use my phone and there was a circle with a cross through it. I am not able to call out or even get a data connection. So I tried flashing back to stock no root and same thing. I put a AT&T sim in and it was the same thing. Flashed back to root several times and I still get the same thing. I checked to see if my radio was on and it was fine. Did Either Service just block the phone? I don't get it. When I leave my house I get bars but no connection on both data or service. Yet I get all kind of texts . So why wont it let me call out or even use my browser if i go down the street and it says it has service and is getting texts? I swapped phones and works perfect so I know it can't be my SIM.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks.
Don't. Use. Zedomax.

DId u try calling T-mobile? or AT&T about the issue?
Well I'm on a "no contract plan" and buy my phones cash. So no warranty. So Zedomax is bad?
Maybe flash a radio to it. I've noticed that I lose service with some roms occasionally. But when I do, I just flash a radio and it seems to fix it.
Sounds like a bad APN setting to me.

Very bad. Its well known to cause many problems on peoples phones. They usually come here after messing up their phone from his website which is no bueno and annoying. Stick with xda from now on, it won't steer u wrong

Call your service provider and verify your APN settings are correct.
From my own limited knowledge. A circle with line means no signal. Bars without a connection type icon means a signal but no service.
As far as useing the zedomax rooting method, as per the OP if it was running fine for monrhs, that clearly isn't the issue.

I'll try flashing a radio and see if that works. .
i have checked all my APN settings and everything seems ok to me. I have hard reset multiple times. My data packet shows on. I also checked my settings to see if my radio is on and it says yes. My Iemi number shows. I'm so confused what could be wrong. It won't work with both ATT or T-mobile. Should work no matter what considering this is an ATT phone.

[Q] Data but no voice on used note 2

I bought a note 2 from swappa and I put my sim card in and I get data but can't make calls or send text. I got a new sim from best buy and also spent about 45 min on the phone with vzw and it's the same. It is activated in their system and the imei is showing correct but there is just no voice or sms. I contacted the seller and he said it was working just fine for him.
My next thought was to use Odin to go back to stock. The seller recommend going back to a prior software version first. Do any of you have any other suggestions? Or am I looking at a bad phone?
Thanks

Sounds like a bad APN.
Try adding in the VZW APN info manually or just reflash any RoM made for a VZW Note II and you should be good.

it came with jedi something on it so I flashed clean rom and it didn't help any. I will search for adding in the APN info and see if that works. thanks for the advise
I hadn't messed with the phone since this morning and put the sim in from my s3 and then was able to make a call, sent 1 text and received 1 text then could no longer makes calls or send texts. I tried rebooting then taking out the sim and putting it back in and nothing. So I used odin and went back to root 66 and same thing. cant make calls or text but data still works.
at this point i am at a complete loss.

Have you double checked the settings in Settings/More Settings/ Mobile Networks to make sure it in set to either Global or LTE/CDMA/EvDO?
If you don't get the issue resolved by adding APNs I would either contact the seller and ask for a refund or contact Big Red to get a replacement.

I am the previous owner...you can go through my postings...will find nothing of me having any issues with the phone...as it worked perfectly...upon researching...my best suggestion would be a roaming mode setting that is only accessible from an aosp rom. The phone is not defective or broken in anyway on the hardware front. The root 66 odin is not the full wipe and restore, but your issue doesnt sound to be solved by that...rather an aosp rom.

That method?
sounds like its software or account related...if you sent a text from it already its probably something you did.

Just CDMA lte...and roaming... may be dialer menu setting for the latter...a fully stock Odin is the only other option... Not route 66... that maintains a lot

Go to Settings/Device options on an AOSP ROM. I have a few extra settings under it that may help. I included screenshots, the one of the open setting is what it should be.

Was the VRAMC3 OTA accepted on the device? If so there is no hope to go fully back to release day stock via Odin, the only options then are Root66 and the Alternate Recobery ROM imnuts posted.
Also Root66 doesn't generally leave too much behind, it is still an Odin flash just like going completely back to stock. My understanding has always been that it will wipe everything.

That has been my understanding as well. SO when I used odin to install route 66 it should have resolved any issue that would have been caused by a setting or apn file.

Checked these as well. All correct and still have the issue.
There is a third option...between the route 66 and if you took no ota...that's the one I would try. Route 66 leaves apps settings and user data in place as well as recovery.

Flashing Root66 on my S3, and every other phone I've flashed Root66 ROMs on, does I'm fact wipe the data I believe. I may be remembering wrong though.
If I were desperate and none of the other ROMs would work and you had done everything possible you could always try selecting the NAND Erase option in Odin when flashing Root66. I would not do this unless I was out of options and had nothing else I could do because it does have the potential to brick the device.
To the OP, exactly what did you do from the moment you got the phone until it stopped showing LTE? I mean tell us EVERYTHING!

LTE has always worked. I received the phone, took the sim from my s3 and put it into the note 2. I was getting data but no calls or texts. I went onto vzw website and chatted with a tech they said I needed a new sim and my s3 sim would not work (which sims are interchangable but I did it anyways). I went to bestbuy as verizon was closed. The guy got a new sim and tried getting it working. He said it was showing activated but it was still the same issue. Next morning I flashed clean rom as it is fairly close to stock compared to the jedi rom that it came with. I then called verizon and was transferred to tier 2 tech support and spent 30 min on the phone with them. they guy said the same thing that it was showing activated in the system, imei and sim number were pulling over just fine and because 4g was working it should all be working. After that I contacted the seller and he said it was all working when he switched to his s4 and suggested I flash back to prior software. I left the phone alone all day and at night put the sim back in and I was able to make a test call and sent 1 text. But then when I got a response to the text I could not respond it kept failing and I was no longer able to make calls anymore. Did a few reboots and factory resets and occasionally after a reboot I can send 1 text then nothing again. Last night I used odin to install route 66 but the issue remained. I was talking to eris of team BAMF who has the note 2 and he said to make sure the radio was the newest (which it was) and to flash his rom to see if it would work (which it did not) While on that ROM I checked all the settings that people have suggested in here as well as a link the seller sent me and then flashed the newest Paranoid Android to check it on there as well and everything was set correct. I have now used odin to install the alternate restore stock image that droidstyle has listed (not route 66 and not the one that locks the bootloader the one that removes root and if you accept the ota it will lock the bootloader and be out of box condition) and I am still having the issue.

OK, try this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=42876028
Use the dialer codes in the last post of the above thread. If they won't work you will have to install the HiddenMenuEnabler.APK from here:
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/38150-enable-hidden-menu-and-dialer-codes/
Or here in the post by adrynalyne if the Rootz one won't work (the one above from Rootz may require root but I can't remember for sure):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2081186
When you get into the hidden menu make sure everything is set to LTE/CDMA/EvDO or whichever the applicable setting would be. Maybe this will fix it...

I appreciate the time and effort you put into getting the links.
With being on 100% stock with the exception of the locked bootloader, if the issue was settings caused it would have been resolved. So I called samsung and the tech I spoke to said it sounded like a bad radio to him, which I have been thinking this entire time. So he set up a warranty claim for me to send in the phone.
The next thing I am trying to figure out is if I can accept the OTA that is waiting (I currently have it deferred) to lock the bootloader or if it will brick the phone. On the thread about returning to stock one post says it will brick it (I think it depends on what version they were on when it was rooted) and one says it won't so I posted asking for clarification. The seller bought it in February and rooted it so it the MC3 OTA never would have been accepted so I am thinking I can accept it but not sure.
thanks again for your suggestions, I wish they would have worked so I didn't have to send it in.
