Designing a car mount to work with my Seidio case that will still allow docking features. The mount will be mated to a ProClip mount for ideal location. It will be molded out of Kydex and will have a micro-fleece like lining in it. The electronics will be torn from a Samsung OEM desktop dock from my Vibrant (close relitive of the captivate). This is a very rough idea based on a design in my head. Any input would be appriciated.
Update: I pulled the circuit board from the OEM dock. I'm torn between using it or not. The dock offer audio pass through but at the cost of fast charge capabilities. Not sure if i want to sacrifice this. Day to day the audio pass through will be very handy, but when I need GPS on long trips, I will have to rely on an occasional battery swap. Thoughts?

On the charge front, can you modify the pins internally to allow for fast charge?

Yes I'm sure I could, but I imagine this would interfere with the audio pass through as you would be shorting the data pins to accomplish this, then how would the data pass.

I see. So the dock uses the USB connector to take the audio from the phone, to the 3.5mm jack attached to the dock. Then from the dock fo your head unit?

Precisely, I use slacker every morning for my morning commute plugged into the AUX via patch cable so this has major everyday advantage for me. This would allow me to simply drop my phone into the dock. Using Tasker I could have it auto launch slacker.
The only alternative to obtain the best of both worlds is to open up a patch cable, ID +/- then wire a switch shorting the data pins in the closed position. While this works in theory, I’m not sure what the effects it would have on the phone/stereo (noise or actual damage). I have little working knowledge of audio.
What if you used the current OE dock and modified that one? That one is already proven to charge.

If I run into one cheap I may try, but I don't want to throw money at this which was my original plan. I made my first car mount tonight. This is the first time working with the much thicker Kydex T 0.093" and boy was it a pain to work. The stuff is about 4 times thicker then the seidio cases plastic shell. I took pics and even a couple videos. I'm happy with it in that it was a shot in the dark and I didn't expect alot out of the first one and also I found out how damn touch this thickness of Kydex is. I will post up info on it tomorrow when I have time to actually type it all up.
interesting, I was hoping to build my own dock as well. Could you post pictures of the circuit board from the original dock? I'm close to buying one just to tear apart for the charge+audio
Great work so far, Keep us posted

You can buy the dock for vibrant or captivate for about $8-$10. I tested they board and it does charge and pass audio.
There are about 6 tiny screws that are accessed by prying off the panel off the back. Be careful doing this, easy to gouge your hand.
The problem will come when you try to mount the board without leaving these delicate wires exposed. Hope this helped.

I've got my old Captivate OEM car dock around here somewhere. I'm wondering if that would work, too.

Should work just fine. I am putting the finishing touches on my guide right now for my first mount that I made last night. If you follow the instructions you should have no problem making a mount an incorporating whatever features you like. I'm still up in the air whether I will be using this dock board or just placing a 90 degree USB cable in. I am waiting to hear back on a quote from a Kydex dealer for a few more sheets and when I get those I will make a more refined end product. What I post here in a bit will be just a way of getting people on the track to making their own mounts. Many people don't realize how easy it really is.

I was looking at the wiring, if I could figure out which pins are used for audio, I could figure out if the other pins could (possibly already are?) fused. I know there are complains about OEM desk docks from captivate and other same gen galaxy s devices not fast charging.

I will get to all that when the time comes, but of course I would be more than happy to supply anything I possibly can to help others out. May be sending out these early prototypes to those who want them once I get something more refined cranked out.

Nice work so far! I've been entertaining the idea of a car dock for my precious Note as well, and I wasn't a big fan of the one that is available from Samsung.
If you plan to move into any sort of CAD/CAM development, I'd love to offer my modeling skills to the cause. I made this guy a while back for my Atrix as a desk dock, but ended up buying the HD dock towards the end of the Project lol.
I'm not trying to highjack this thread or anything, just want to offer my services to the cause. If there is an interest, i will start drawing up some plans.

Very cool work but mine will be mounted in my truck so that cool work would go to waste. My mount is aimed at the average joe who can invest <$20 and have themselves a full functional car dock. I'm working on tracking down sources for different parts. I just some rotating adjustable low profile swivels that will allow the case just to rotate from portrait to landscape rather then disassembly. I ordered two to try it out.
Nice cant wait to see the finished product will you be selling any?
I'm keeping an eye out for the availability of some power jacket extended battery packs.
Below are a couple of examples of solutions that are available for the standard Xperia Z.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bearcXdXdAc
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=6rE0Z0yczws
The first one is a generic Chinease one that is about availiable on ebay for about $25
The second one is the official mugen one that has recently come out.
Personally I think I prefer the cheep Chinese one. Anyway its all academic at the moment because there are no solutions out yet for the Ultra. Its pretty new out mind so I suspect that when the LTE models launch globally we will see such solutions. :good:
Would you consider using such a solution for your Ultra?
These stuffs does give the phone some extra weight, some may like it for easier handling due to it having more weight but kinds of defeats the purpose of the ZU design.
I'm currently using a 15000mAh powerbank with 2.1A and 1A output options.

You're talking to a man who has a 9000mAH Zerolemon battery on his Note 2
Each to his own of course but my personal preference is to have a powerjacket attached to the device rather than carry around a separate power bank.

Haha no worries, I owned one of the powerjackets for my Note 2 or was it S3, I'm fine with it but just speaking out generally since many users are going for thinner and thinner designs
I generally don't mind added thickness and weight, phones these days are going so thin and light, it makes me feel insecure holding them lol.

Yeah, Its just a shame they didn't see fit to make a bit thicker and go for a 4000 mAh battery.

I was kind of excited when you posted this thread but when I saw the battery capacity and I went "mehhhh"
Cos anything equal to or less than the phone's own capacity.. is a little on the low side. Most of the time we will use the phone and use the power jack at the same time, which means even if it's equal to the phone's 3000mAh it would probably be able to charge it from 1% to say 50% only. Still useful in emergency times (beggars can't be choosers) but like you said, maybe 4000-5000mAh may be a better option considering these cheap China makes usually overstate their capacity and the battery degrades rather fast too.

Well they certainly have more surface area to play with on the Ultra, so lets hope the capacities supplied will be bigger. That's kind of too logical to be a reality though lol

Hi all,
Does anyone know if the polarity of the magnetic charger on the z2 is the same as the z1?
I've just ordered my z2 and I'm looking at building my own magnetic charger. I'm seen plenty of info about doing the same with the z1.
Thanks for any information.

Would be happy to. Hopefully my phone will come today (or if not, then tomorrow) so I should be able to try a few things out soon.
If you check the following thread, there's lots of information about making a charging dock for the Xperia Z (not the Z1 as I initially thought) and although the sizes might be different, the setup should be very similar.

I particularly like the lego dock!

My z2 arrived this afternoon. Although I've not had a chance to actually build anything useful, I have been able to test the pins to see if my VERY simple charger (which consists of me physically holding wires up to charging pins) works.
So to confirm to anyone interested, the top pin is positive with the bottom pin ground. Attached is a - distorted - image showing what I mean. Hopefully someone will find it useful for their own projects.
I'll keep this thread updated with any further designs I come up with for the charger.

I like a project
I'm sure I could get it very cheap online, but I like to build and tinker with things and this should be quite easy to build.
Saying that, I do think the docks I've seen online look very boring and I'm sure I can build something much more interesting.

Hi,
I might switch to the xperia z2 as my new phone. However, I am currently on a galaxy s3 with a 7000 mAh battery so I would like to know of any decent battery expansion options exist for the Z2. I was looking into battery cases as I want everything to be in one package as opposed to having a separate power bar.
Do you know of any good/reliable battery cases?
I was looking at one from Brando workshop but the company does not seem reliable and there is no frontal protection. I can't post a link due to my noob status.

Hi, with stamina mode on my z2 has been on for 2.5 days and still has 18% battery left. How much power do you need.
I am a quite heavy user and WiFi is on permanently.
My z did not last a day and I used a powerbank case with a 3000mhr battery. Was a good case but I haven't needed one.
Then your not a heavy user, he clearly is, I only get a day, day and a half max
So far I've only found these... I have been looking too.

Brando cases were a popular option for the Lumia 920 when I was still on WP, I never heard anything particularly bad about them and assuming this is as cheap as the 920 one was I'd say it is probably worth a try.
sorry for the late reply guys. Thanks for the help.
I emailed Brando about having an xperia z2 case with Cover and they actually added one. If quality is not a concern, I would definitely check it out. Search xperia z2 battery case on their site to find it. (I still can't post links)
Unless it's still waterproof I couldn't use one personally, St the moment I just under clock the cpu to save battery, all apps still work flawlessly and smoothly at 1.5 ghz

Thanks for the tip regarding Brando. I just purchased a white Brando one so hoping its as good as it appears. I noticed plenty of the Ebay ones dont mention it but when i emailed the sellers, they are charge only, dont support data sync which would be a hassle having to always remove it from the case.
Whereas this one mentions data sync exists.

Nope, definitely doesn't support data sync. When I advised the seller of this, they apologised and eventually offered me a refund in full, allowed me to keep the case and advised they would update their website to remove that it supports data sync but few days ago when I checked they haven't updated anything lol

Hi all,
I'm just wondering what power bank will work best for the new Samsung S8. I'm not making any assumptions about the phone's battery life, but with recent reviews and posts about the S8, having a power bank seems like a good idea. What are your recommendations? I was looking at the Xaiomi Power Bank 2.
Devin
I don't think any particular brand stands over the rest. I'd say go with something with at least 6,000 mAh and it should be fine.Try to do a bit of research on the ones you find, Amazon reviews and YouTube reviews are my usual go-to.
USB-C ports, wireless charging and fast charge are definitely a plus when looking for specific features. I'm personally using the Anker PowerCore 10000 right now for my 6P and other devices. While I don't have the S8 yet, the fast charge is compatible with S6 and S7 and I don't see why it wouldn't be compatible with the S8. In terms of brands, my go-to is Anker. I've heard good things about Aukey and Xiaomi, but haven't had any experience with them personally.

That Anker doesn't support Quick Charge.
I'm going to see how the battery life is first before ordering a power bank. No point wasting money if the battery is decent.
I've been looking for a power bank and the anker listed above looks ok, but I'm sure I've seen the same thing that supports quick charge.

Which reviews? The ones I've seen show slightly less/equal/slightly better battery life than the exynos S7 edge.
Go with Anker. They're rated the highest when it comes to portable chargers. I've got one with 20100 mah, which lasts me all day on multiple devices.
Well, it was my first day with the Samsung S8. Just have to say, what a beautiful device. Feels awesome in your hand and the battery life is great too. I'm currently at 25%. Have 4h 5min screen on time (using WQHD+). Listened to Spotify all day through my headphones and my cars Bluetooth. I am so glad that I went with the smaller version. It fits perfectly in my hands. The positioning of the fingerprint sensor is not bothersome (to me anyway). I got big hands, so it is easily reached. As for right now, a power bank is not needed. But I will take into consideration Ankers products. Thank you all and have a good night!
This is one I got a few months ago and it been working for me. I got it when it was on sale. I paid $17.99 for it.

Xiaomi Power Bank is best for Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus . It is light in weight and have thin body. This power bank offers you conversion rate up to 93%; hence optimizing its charging and discharging efficiency.

Two of my friends have that and find it an excellent charger.
Whatever you decide on, if you're buying it on Amazon or using Amazon reviews as a guide to eventually buy elsewhere, be sure to run a check of the reviews thru reviewmeta.com
They have a Chrome extension as well, which if clicked while on any Amazon site will open the report in a new tab.
It does an incredibly detailed analysis of everything from wordcount, previous reviews by those reviewers that was taken down, incentivized reviews, verified review percentage and tons more.
Best site I've discovered in years.
