DIY magnetic charger - Xperia Z2 Accessories

Hi all,
Does anyone know if the polarity of the magnetic charger on the z2 is the same as the z1?
I've just ordered my z2 and I'm looking at building my own magnetic charger. I'm seen plenty of info about doing the same with the z1.
Thanks for any information.

Would be happy to. Hopefully my phone will come today (or if not, then tomorrow) so I should be able to try a few things out soon.
If you check the following thread, there's lots of information about making a charging dock for the Xperia Z (not the Z1 as I initially thought) and although the sizes might be different, the setup should be very similar.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z/accessories/diy-quick-charge-t2167089/page25
I particularly like the lego dock!
Steven

My z2 arrived this afternoon. Although I've not had a chance to actually build anything useful, I have been able to test the pins to see if my VERY simple charger (which consists of me physically holding wires up to charging pins) works.
So to confirm to anyone interested, the top pin is positive with the bottom pin ground. Attached is a - distorted - image showing what I mean. Hopefully someone will find it useful for their own projects.
I'll keep this thread updated with any further designs I come up with for the charger.

Im sorry but do you really think its worth the trouble since you can get both dock and magnetic cable as cheap as 4 pounds?

I like a project
I'm sure I could get it very cheap online, but I like to build and tinker with things and this should be quite easy to build.
Saying that, I do think the docks I've seen online look very boring and I'm sure I can build something much more interesting.

If you are capable, goodluck then! Im only doubtful cause i saw some creations of xda users, and wasnt impressed lol

Custom Vehicle Dock - Need Design Feedback (PICS ADDED)

Designing a car mount to work with my Seidio case that will still allow docking features. The mount will be mated to a ProClip mount for ideal location. It will be molded out of Kydex and will have a micro-fleece like lining in it. The electronics will be torn from a Samsung OEM desktop dock from my Vibrant (close relitive of the captivate). This is a very rough idea based on a design in my head. Any input would be appriciated.
Update: I pulled the circuit board from the OEM dock. I'm torn between using it or not. The dock offer audio pass through but at the cost of fast charge capabilities. Not sure if i want to sacrifice this. Day to day the audio pass through will be very handy, but when I need GPS on long trips, I will have to rely on an occasional battery swap. Thoughts?

On the charge front, can you modify the pins internally to allow for fast charge?

Yes I'm sure I could, but I imagine this would interfere with the audio pass through as you would be shorting the data pins to accomplish this, then how would the data pass.

I see. So the dock uses the USB connector to take the audio from the phone, to the 3.5mm jack attached to the dock. Then from the dock fo your head unit?

Precisely, I use slacker every morning for my morning commute plugged into the AUX via patch cable so this has major everyday advantage for me. This would allow me to simply drop my phone into the dock. Using Tasker I could have it auto launch slacker.
The only alternative to obtain the best of both worlds is to open up a patch cable, ID +/- then wire a switch shorting the data pins in the closed position. While this works in theory, I’m not sure what the effects it would have on the phone/stereo (noise or actual damage). I have little working knowledge of audio.
What if you used the current OE dock and modified that one? That one is already proven to charge.

If I run into one cheap I may try, but I don't want to throw money at this which was my original plan. I made my first car mount tonight. This is the first time working with the much thicker Kydex T 0.093" and boy was it a pain to work. The stuff is about 4 times thicker then the seidio cases plastic shell. I took pics and even a couple videos. I'm happy with it in that it was a shot in the dark and I didn't expect alot out of the first one and also I found out how damn touch this thickness of Kydex is. I will post up info on it tomorrow when I have time to actually type it all up.
interesting, I was hoping to build my own dock as well. Could you post pictures of the circuit board from the original dock? I'm close to buying one just to tear apart for the charge+audio
Great work so far, Keep us posted

You can buy the dock for vibrant or captivate for about $8-$10. I tested they board and it does charge and pass audio.
There are about 6 tiny screws that are accessed by prying off the panel off the back. Be careful doing this, easy to gouge your hand.
The problem will come when you try to mount the board without leaving these delicate wires exposed. Hope this helped.

Should work just fine. I am putting the finishing touches on my guide right now for my first mount that I made last night. If you follow the instructions you should have no problem making a mount an incorporating whatever features you like. I'm still up in the air whether I will be using this dock board or just placing a 90 degree USB cable in. I am waiting to hear back on a quote from a Kydex dealer for a few more sheets and when I get those I will make a more refined end product. What I post here in a bit will be just a way of getting people on the track to making their own mounts. Many people don't realize how easy it really is.

I was looking at the wiring, if I could figure out which pins are used for audio, I could figure out if the other pins could (possibly already are?) fused. I know there are complains about OEM desk docks from captivate and other same gen galaxy s devices not fast charging.

I will get to all that when the time comes, but of course I would be more than happy to supply anything I possibly can to help others out. May be sending out these early prototypes to those who want them once I get something more refined cranked out.

Nice work so far! I've been entertaining the idea of a car dock for my precious Note as well, and I wasn't a big fan of the one that is available from Samsung.
If you plan to move into any sort of CAD/CAM development, I'd love to offer my modeling skills to the cause. I made this guy a while back for my Atrix as a desk dock, but ended up buying the HD dock towards the end of the Project lol.
I'm not trying to highjack this thread or anything, just want to offer my services to the cause. If there is an interest, i will start drawing up some plans.

Very cool work but mine will be mounted in my truck so that cool work would go to waste. My mount is aimed at the average joe who can invest <$20 and have themselves a full functional car dock. I'm working on tracking down sources for different parts. I just some rotating adjustable low profile swivels that will allow the case just to rotate from portrait to landscape rather then disassembly. I ordered two to try it out.
Nice cant wait to see the finished product will you be selling any?

Asus Audio Dock

Has anyone purchased or tried the Audio Dock for the TF300T?
I'm seriously thinking of purchasing it but can't find any reviews online for it.

I saw this a little over a month ago but have yet to see one in a store here in the U.S..
It looks nice but kind of pricey. Hopefully I'll be able to see one in a store to see if the sound is worth it.

Bought this dock directly from Asus.
Not a bad little. Sound isn't outstanding but not too bad. A little smaller in size than i imagined
You don't need to have the dock plugged in for it to operate, it can be powered by the battery power of the TF300T.
All in all i would give it 8/10.

Received mine from Asus Australia $AU200 including delivery
I received my Audio Dock yesterday from Asus Australia for $AU200 including delivery. Part 90-xb3pokst00030
I hooked it up last night and it seemed to work fine, but then I had to take it off the stand because the screen kept flashing on and off every few minutes. I have switch Daydream set to off in the display settings, but it is still happening. Does anyone have any ideas.
another awesome Idea is a bluetooth audio speaker! look those up!
Personally if my girlfriend and I ever watch a tv show on the tablet we tape the lid of a jar to the back so the sound actually comes towards us. Or of course bluetooth speaker - certainly not worthwhile getting a dedicated accessory

Case with Bluetooth Keyboard

To use my Xperia Tablet Z profesionally, I realized that I need a physical keyboard. For the onscreen keyboard I installed Swiftkey and I'm satisfied with it compared to other onscreen keyboards but it is no competition for a physical one.
I looked around on various sites e.g. Amazon but unfortunately there is no case with integrated bluetooth keyboard has been designed specifically for the XTZ. There are enough bulky, generic cases with keyboards out there but let's be honest... we hate bulky crap! If you bought an XTZ you want a clean and professional looking case. :cyclops:
The Kensington KeyFolio Expert Folio & Keyboard for Android/Windows tablets appealed to me because of it's interesting micro-suction technique to hold the tablet in place. I decided to give it a try and was able to order one for EUR 50,-.
I'm sharing a couple of pics for you guys to see what it looks like together with the XTZ. The keyboard fits my needs perfectly and pressing any key works to wake up tablet. The dimensions of the XTZ seem perfect for this case and so I must say I am satisfied. Especially because this case allows a position where you can charge from the micro usb port! What do you think?
Doesn't look too bad considering the others I've seen online. I needed something similar but went for a separate logitech bluetooth keyboard and the poetic case. In my job I need the ability to type quickly while sat in an office but also to take the tablet out around steel plants and take notes where I couldn't use the case keyboard. How do you find using the XTZ as a normal tablet with the on screen keyboard in that case? I can just imagine that having to keep changing the input method in settings each time I wanted to use Swiftkey instead of the cases keyboard would be a bit of a nuisance.
does the keyboard consume quickly the battery?
Could you please link the case that you bought? Tried searching for it but found alot of different version both for the iPad and stuff. Would be nice if you could paste a direct link to the case so I dont make any mistake if I buy one.
Is this the right one? amazon.com/Kensington-KeyFolio-Multi-Angle-Bluetooth-K39532US/dp/B007RB10K4

Not exactly confused but needing a bit more solid feedback on available android keyboards for XPERIA TABLET?
I have just watched the video on the kensington and it seems fine to me.but I wondered what other choices are out there? I have spent a long time searching and all I can find is APPLE Keyboards and one or two generic keyboards for Android.
I know Logitech make one which is probably the front runner?
any additional feedback most welcome as I have just ordered my Xperia z tablet

As long as the "Apple" keyboards use bluetooth you should be good. Most keyboard will work with the XTZ, it just boils down to personal preference.

Hello shangrila500
Really do appreciate your reply,I am not very tech minded..so it all takes a bit longer to sink in with us old folk
are there any good reasons why you would not use an APPLE keyboard with an ANDROID Device?
Something I and maybe others have not thought off, because if we can use an APPLE Keyboard then the choices really do increase, from 2-3 good keyboards,Kensington,Zagg e.t.c to a very wide choice.
Would love to hear from folk who have being using APPLE pads and how they find them

The only reason you would not want to use it is if it has some proprietary Apple connection that is what it communicates via. If it uses bluetooth you should be fine.
Ive recently found a sharp looking Nexus 10 keyboard that looks like it should work, the only thing I am worried about is that the case has the rounded edges for the Nexus tablets instead of the sharp square ones like our tablet has.
Here is a link to it:

It may not work but im going to order one next month when I get paid and test it out. Im in the middle of writing reviews for the cases I currently have for the XTZ so I may wait to post them until I get that case/keyboard combo and just post them all together.

I believe you would be wasting your time because the case is dimensionally and geometrically incompatible with the XTZ. Even its cutouts are in the wrong locations. The case also looks bulky, heavy (15.2 ounces), and God-awful ugly.

I don't think it looks that bad for a keyboard case, it looks a lot better than most and out of all the keyboard cases I've seen it looks the best. It is going to weigh quite a bit because of what it is, if Sony made a KB case for the XTZ it would be nice and sleek but until then we have to ,odify cases that have been released for other tablets that are going to be bulkier.
The weight is on par with other keyboard cases and will be about the same as the Surface KB case that someone has already confirmed worked for our tablet
A for the geometrical imperfections I plan on making some modifications to the case to hopefully make it work, it may not in the long run but I plan on eventually getting a Nexus 10 so if I think there is no possible way it will ever work once i get it I will just hang on to it.
The cutouts are going to be wrong on every KB case until Sony or someone else releases one specifically for the XTZ.
All that being said I may just go with the Surface case for a KB case, I just don't particularly case for it but beggars can't be choosers.
P.S.

backlight leaking from magnetic charging port!

Hi guys i was using my z2 in total dark and just found out that screen backlight is leaking from magnetic charging port of the phone.
It seems like there's small gap between the port and lcd.
My concern is that it might affect waterproof function of the phone. (Maybe my z2 is a defected unit.. )
can you guys check if backlight from the screen leaks through magnetic charging port of your z2?
Thanks

Thanks for the reply guys,It looks like it's only my phone that is having light leakage problem.
I am going to take it to the Sony service center tomorrow and see what they offer me.
ps. Does anyone know how to check total call minutes?
bell offers refund/exchange only if the phone was used less than 30minute/50MB Data.
No leak here either.

No leak too.
If you have the white model and you set your screen brightness to 100% (with no adaptive), you can actually see the screen's backlight bleeding through even in the USB port area.
It looks like it may just be backlight bleeding through the plastic bit. I'll give it a go tonight in the dark with 100% brightness and update you on it.

I just had a look with the phone in a dark drawer and I can see the bleed you're talking about. It's a small gap between the metal frame and the plastic of the magnetic dock.
I am just assuming it's light going through the white plastic more than anything else.
For those who reported no such bleed, what colour is your Z2?
Purple

I also have a white Xperia Z2 and I DO have backlight bleeding through the magnetic charging port. It's very faint, but it's definitely a sliver of light bleeding through the plastic bit of the frame.
Mine has also backlight bleeding through the magnetic port. As i have tested, the waterproofing of my phone is not affected by this issue.

so u should ask for replacement for faulty hardware...
:good:
Why according to this thread it seems normal.
I can see backlight leaks when I remove SD card flap. Is that normal for everyone?

The forum refers to the magnetic port backlight leakage. To inform everyone usually with the white model. Its alright and its normal. Waterproofing not affected.

Yep. Normal. Removing the flaps youll see the internal parts in certain angle. So for best protection dont remove the flaps and use magnetic chargers.

No backlight leaking on mine, however after a couple minutes in the shower, I noticed water had got into the screen through the magnetic charging port, I had all ports closed ?

Aww. Do you use magnetic dock for charging? Maybe the magnetic port is already loose thats why the water gets inside. Several Z2 users experienced loose magnetic port.
Still working? Do you able to drain the water from your z2?

Yeah I use the magnetic dock charger, I tried moving/pushing the magnetic port but it sits very solid.
Anyways I was gonna take it to the store I bought it from but the water disappeared after one day.
The repair would take about 3 weeks so for now I just gonna avoid having my Z2 near water.
