This may seem like a dumb question but I am unsure about which root method or files I should be using to root my i717 that is currently running Jelly Bean 4.04 with kernel 3.0.8. I am thinking that I can just use the one shown in the general thread but that says for STOCK note.
Any information would be greatly appreciated. I would like to get out from under the TWLauncher umbrella so I can use things like the new google search feature.
Thanks!
This is what I used. Worked great

Thanks, everything seemed to work well. The only issue I ran into was that the SuperUser pack he has listed kept failing. I had to go pick up one from the superuser site (sorry cant link yet) to have it complete successfully.
Now to try to find out which ROM I should use. Any recommendations? Im hoping to find one that has the new google voice search similar to siri. Thanks again for the help, it is much appreciated.

Glad that worked out for you, if you where looking for a custom rom, you could have skipped root in the first place and gone straight for custom recovery then a custom rom !
As for what your looking for, your looking for Google Search (Dubbed Google Now) on a Jelly Bean rom (unless you want to use a sideloaded possibly modified version for ICS) which is the parallel to siri (im trying to be neutral, IMHO Google Now crushes Siri six ways from sunday MOST of the time... situational use of course is the reason "most of the time" is said)

Actually a sideloaded modded version would be great. I am not really interested in much other than checking that out. I suppose I can just google for one unless of course you know of a working one. Thanks again for all the info.
Now is bundled into Google Search on JB. Hold the search button and it pops up. I'm using CM10 stable. Other roms have more options here and there but it's the most stable and smoothest I've used with the least random reboots ( A common JB problem)

Thats great and all, but from what I am understanding of what he said, hed rather not mess with it too much and stick on stock AT&T ICS 4.0.4 and just sideload Google Now...
I dont have a link handy, I read about it, but never cared because I have no issue with CM10 (but yea, google search should do the trick for you, just make sure you nab the latest version since it was only recently updated)!

I was able to find a working version of Google Now. Seems to work fairly well on my 4.0.4 build. I haven't yet decided if there is a real reason for me to try and change out the actual rom or not. There are so many that I really have no idea what I would be getting by doing one over the other.
Thanks again for the info.
Hey all,
Having a little trouble here with maps/navigation. Almost everytime i open the app and start a navigation somewhere i get the message "maps has stopped." The weird thing is that the voice will still talk to you and i can still see the navigation notification in the drop down menu.
once i click on the navigation app, however, it disappears and i must reopen it. Maps works just fine alone, but when i tell it to navigate sometimes the graphics will get glitchy and and will give me the error mentioned above. It seems like all of this started after I flashed the JellyBam 3.1 ROM with the komodo kernel...and just for the record i never got the komodo to work (almost everything force closed with it installed).
Now even after flashing various other AOKP and going back to sense ROMs, my navigation/maps app still closes on me and gets glitchy. ive already tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app.
It is an EVO 4G LTE hardware version 0003, S-OFF
Any help would be greatly appreciated
It's a known issue with Jelly Bean, not any particular ROM. Navigation apparently eats up huge gobs of memory until it eventually kills itself. I suggest an alternate navigation app. I'm using Waze and I like it.

As stated, its unfortunately a known issue....seems to be nav eating up memory and crashing itself...I dealt with it for a while just like yourself and finally resolved it by going into a sprint store and they acknowledged an issue and my refurb replacement doesn't have the issue...my personal opinion is that it has to do with what batch of phone you have (mine was a release day phone)...no fix in sight...only options are try getting replacement phones til you get a more recent build phone (no way to tell besides activation date in ##786# menu) or try telenav or waze as many have done...good luck and hope that helps and let us know what you decide to do...

Oh okay so its a JellyBean issue. That makes more sense now that i think about the timing of everything. I was running ICS roms before flashing jellyBAM. Thats a relief because i was think i may have messed something up permanently by flashing that komodo kernel.
I think ill either run an ICS rom or just use a different nav program. Dont really feel like going through the process of unrooting only to deal with whatever shenanigans sprint has waiting for me if i were to request a refurb
EDIT: btw good call on the waze...this app is awesome!

Yea it sux if you're trying to run a jb based Rom (ics roms were I did too for a while) but somewhere along the way the phones have a tiny manufacturing difference newer/older build wise (at least I believe so) and can't handle the jellybean update reliably...using another nav app obviously defeats running a clean uncluttered phone but it'll have to do til someone/htc/google fix whatever is causing the nav issue...IF they ever do.

If it is a batch issue, it isn't as simple as old vs. new. I have a release day phone and haven't had any issues with Google nav and Jelly Bean.
I have a release day phone and currently had it crash 4+ times on a drive home last night, running jb as well, very weird
This happened to me, so I uninstalled maps, reinstalled from market, and the glitch has not reappeared.

Well there goes my theory somewhat...darn it...hmmm...can't pinpoint any other reason for it besides maybe bad batch of certain memory module or part inside phone.

That's interesting also...I think you and maybe a handful of other users have had luck doing that and having success. Looks like it'll probably be an issue that won't be fixed except by getting funtional replacement phone IF the store goes through with it for whoever does have the issue.

Well sounds like there isnt anymore talk of getting a fix for this. Looks like I am going to have to pay the $50 for a refurbished phone... This is a hardware/software issue I think Sprint/HTC should be replacing the phone at no cost even without TEP. /endrant

Ill be surprised to hear that they charge you for it...they shouldn't...just tell em the truth, the update screwed navigtion up along with other issues, and you want to get a phone with the older software on it to have a functional phone....when you get it, just unlock and don't update your hboot and read up on how to get jb on it with older hboot (like I have my phone now) to see if nav works.. if it doesn't then you'll still have the option of going back to older ruu before jb...
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app
I'm surprised this is related to memory. In my experience, and I've had the app freeze/crash since Feb. update, the issue is just related to navigation when in 3D mode. If you tap the compass in top left to lock north to up (put nav in top-down mode), it does not crash. Seems to be directly related to 3D rendering.
I hate using the map in that mode, but none of the other map programs give as good a quick overview of local traffic as google nav. Waze is close, but the UI is more cluttered.
Anyway, if you still want to use google nav on JB, just tap the compass before it crashes, and it will keep that setting for future navigation.
I just think it is unbelievable that Navigation has been broken for so long and Google is doing nothing to fix it. Since the JB update, Maps has been updated at least twice, as recent as this week, and it is still broken. The issue is quite widespread. By looking at the Maps reviews on Google Play, if you filter by phone, almost every review by EVO LTE users says the same.

Make sure you get a full GPS lock on Beans then while still in the app restart directly to Recovery and flash your ROM of choice. Best way to do it and always works for me.

I had same issues with gps not working and what I did to get it working was flash back to stock rom and turn on gps and get a lock... then go directly into twrp and flash your rom and hopefully it works for ya right away, this method has worked for several people so worth a shot!!

gps lock
When I've had trouble with a GPS lock in the past I've resorted to the tools menu in an app called "GPS status and toolbox" and it always worked. I'm never completely sure if it was the app or the phone just decided to get a lock but I've never had a ROM without GPS and I've run many ROMs on my note. Its in the play store. I'm too new here to post links! Good luck!

I have tried this and numerous other things from other threads and still have not been able to get a GPS lock once. I am at a loss now. Im on a i605 using TWRP as recovery. I wish I had better luck like others seems to. I wish there was some solution that worked with this phone. I know it is not GPS problem as Beans gets a lock right away.

Well Beans is a Touchwiz ROM which just modifies the stock ROM, CM (And AOSP in general) uses Googles android code and modifies it to work on our devices which involves a lot of "Hacking" to get stuff to work which is why you see issues like this on pretty much any non nexus device. It's very time consuming and you will almost never see a perfectly working AOSP ROM for any device but most are close enough that getting to use the latest and greatest from El goog is more than worth it.
Sorry to rant a bit. Just don't know if everyone realizes just how much goes into developing AOSP ROMs and how much time people spend doing this for free just so we can get a somewhat stock device which may or may not work any better than Touchwiz.

No luck for me yet personally. I have tried every fix listed on every forum i can find multiple times step by step. I can for sure get a fix on any Verizon based rom, but still no dice on any ported or international rom.
Me either, I just tried the , flash verizon based rom, get lock, boot into recovery, flash new rom. Can't get a lock. Had no idea this would be such an issue coming to this device, bummer gps is kind of a major part I would like to have working.
I know right? I think the Jedi X roms are absolute money, but in my experience I haven't been able to get a gps lock on any of the 3 I tried to flash. I did get excited when I flashed it and seen the "gps quick-fix" but even that didn't work. Beans rom is working for me right now, but man do I love me some Jedi X.
Flash your rom of choice, once flashed reboot into recovery and flash this file! Worked like a charm for me, hope it does the same me for you.

So, anyone else pissed at the changes made to Gmaps? As far as I'm concerned 7.0 is useless for the intended use of my Note 3. Why do i say that? My three sons have gotten me involved in mountain biking and in doing so I have been bitten by the fitness bug. The Note 3 was going to be the perfect phone to allow me to integrate biking, fitness, and general health, with a phablet which I have wanted ever since my wife bought her Note 2. The Note 3 would not only be faster and improved as a whole, it has ANT+ built into the phone. As many of you may know, ANT+ is the defacto standard in the sports and fitness world when it come to monitoring performance. Couple that with Gmaps and boom, one device to track route, time, speed, cadence, heart rate, watts, etc. and what does google do? Just remove the features that Bikers, Hikers, Walkers, Runners, Offroaders of all types, even Campers and Bird Watchers use the most, the ability to plan routes point to point directions based on points the user saves on the map using the STAR option. Version 7.crap.0 refuses to save any location unless it is based on a street address, which is great for urbanites trying to find the ice cream store, but worthless to many millions of "outdoor" types. Try saving a location on some trail where you plan to meet up with others and 7.crap.0 tells you "oops, you "dropped" your pin". Yeah, thanks but I didn't drop it, you just said I dropped it, so I'll bend over, cause bending over makes it soo much easier.....
So anyway, I d/l Gmaps 6.14.2 same version as the Note 2 and my aged Nexus S 4G, which is the version that WORKS but I get "app failed to load" error. Jeez, of course it failed, they are making 7.crap.0 in two flavors, 4.3 and 4.<3, but I guess they don't want to make Gmaps 6.14.2 work on J.B.
Anyone know how I can fix this mess???
Gaps 6.14 worked great on my galaxy s3 running aosp 4.3. The problem now is that maps was preloaded so it's a system app. Only way to get ur old maps back would be to root and remove maps and reinstall the older version

That's what I was afraid of
I was hoping to not have to mess with the OS, but google seems to have turned a deaf ear to the hundreds if not thousands of complaints on the google forums. I did quite well putting CM7 on our HTC Hero's but not so well with the Nexus S 4G. I absolutely want to roll back to 6.x so I guess I'll have to nut up and try to root without breaking the Note 3.
Thanks for the responses!!!
Anyone been able to get this going on 4.3? I thought it was spose to work on 4.3 up. But while I get the audio history etc settings, I'm not getting the extra two related to using it from any screen and from the lockscreen. I've switched to US English. It all worked fine on my N7. Just wondering...

You're not the only one. I've been searching daily and trying different things to see if I could get it to kick in. I tried tricks that people have posted but I'm just like you. I get the Audio History settings but not the additional settings in the OK Google detection area. I went as far as wiping my phone and starting from scratch just to see. Still no luck. I am rooted and am using a different phone running 4.4.3 but the same results. My wife is purely stock and her situation is identical to ours. Bummer

Bump.
I have the Galaxy S3 T999, stock, not rooted, Jelly Bean 4.3, Google search 3.5+, Play services 5+. Audio History is on. I've tried searching OK Google Everywhere and Unleash the Google. I factory reset my phone, and didn't use any data restore programs at all. Play services auto updated, and I updated my Google Search app. STILL no luck. Re-searched the OK Google Everywhere and the Unleash the Google phrases.
Nothing doing. Can somebody help us figure out what's going on?
And here I thought it was just me... I'm glad I found this thread. I was able to get it to work on my stock N7 with 4.4 but can't on my stock Galaxy S4 or stock Galaxy Tab 2 7", both running 4.3...
It's pretty disappointing. I checked a friend's phone who has the same exact phone and software as me but she has the OK Google everywhere option. Oh well I'll sit here and cry with you guys until something magically changes.
Fortunately for me I FINALLY have this activated. Turns out that the problem for me personally was due to the ROM that I am running. I'm rooted so if anyone here is I would advise you to check out this link because it fixed it for me right way. Good luck everyone.

I've just tried it myself, switching back to stock 4.3 after archiport 4.4 beta was getting unstable. Unfortunately this method didn't work, and I think it's a 4.3 thing. Bugger that, as if really use this feature, but am not quite prepared to get a new phone yet. There is an xposed module to get this kinda working, but again just for 4.4.
