[q] help rooting ME7 and upgrading to 4.3 on my mac - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Does anybody know where I can get the instructions on how to root ME7 and then upgrade to 4.3 on a Mac? I've been searching for the answer but I just can't seem to get the answer. Maybe I'm overlooking something. Thanks.

I believe it would make better sense to go ahead and update to mj7 either ota or via sideload.
Then follow this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2531704
To root the mj7 build.
Just keep in mind there is no custom recovery and safestrap is not compatible with mj7 yet.

The issue is that I cannot use Vroot because I'm on a mac and they have no mac version...

You've got two choices:
1. Root ME7 using the directions in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2380325 - there's nothing in that process that requires a PC. You'll have to format the SDcard in your Mac as exFat using Disk Utility, then unzip the exploit files into the root.
2. Update to MI1 using the OTA, then use Heimdall to flash the Root de la Vega root.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2487142
Or, a third choice - update to MI1, then follow the "Update to MJ7 and keep root" directions.

So if I take the OTA update will I go to MI1 or ME7?

The OTA updates don't skip releases. If you're on MDK and take an update, you'll go to ME7.
If you're on ME7, it'll go to MI1. If you're on MI1, it'll go to MJ7.

[Q] S4 4.2.2 question

Hi guys it's been a while since I've been on here. I have a quick question. I know the S4 bootloader can't be unlocked yet. Which is fine with me..but I found this thread to root it but it says not to do it if I accepted the OTA update. How do I know if I have the update? I did update my phone the other day but now it's asking for me to do it again. So I am think I don't have the latest update. I just want to root my phone to take out all this samsung and verizon crap it comes with. Hopefully when the bootloader is able to be unlocked I can start flashing custom roms. If anyone could help me out here that would be awesome. Here's the thread that I was going to follow.

There are separate OTA updates to get you from MDK to ME7, ME7 to MI1, and MI1 to MJ7. You'll get prompted for each of these as there's no way to skip an update.
To find out what you're running, Settings, More, About Phone. Look at the Build number field.

That depends on what you want to do. Updating to MI1 will still allow you root, but no custom recovery.
There's no big advantage there, but MI1 will allow you to update to MJ7 and keep root, which is perhaps worthwhile as that's 4.3.
I find my GS4 to be a lot faster on MJ7 so it was worth it. But only you can decide what's best.

You can root MJ7 using vroot. Since I don't trust that, I'm not rooted.

But the bootloader is still locked and I cant flash any custom roms yet right? And MJ7 is the newest update that is out???
Thanks
If you're on ME7 you can install safestrap to flash TW roms, but no AOSP. There's no point to upgrade to MI1 if that's what you want to do, because there's certain kernel issues using MI1 with safestrap. If you want to be on 4.3 rooted and don't care about flashing, then are safe methods to update firmware and keep root. Just follow the guides in their respective threads.

SCH-i545 Verizon GSIV - Stock from Root MK2

Hi All!
I rooted my Galaxy S4 on Verizon earlier today (well, attempted to) with VRoot. It worked, but everything was really sluggish so I attempted to flash back to the stock Samsung ROM. I discovered that since I was running 4.3 with the MK2 OTA, I can't flash a previous version. I can't find a copy of the MK2 ROM anywhere. Does anyone here have any suggestions or maybe a link to the MK2 ROM for the i545 on Verizon?
Thanks!
Ross

Got it fixed. Used Kies to download MK2 and reflash. All is now well. Still have the file if anyone else needs it.

There are several ways to root the mk2 version but both vroot and kingo have been deemed unsafe by the xda mods, in the development thread there is however a root method for mj7 that does in fact work with mk2. also im gonna warn you before hand that there is no custom recovery available for the mk2 or mj7 versions of the gs4.
Link to saferoot method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758

I used the same method. Worked quite well. But is it yet safe to flash?

If your talking About flashing custom ROMS/recovery's, then no, and if you attempt to do either it most likely will result in a brick. However a Dev by the name of Hashcode, is currently working on making safestrap compatible with MJ7 & MK2. I hope that helps clear up some things.

How did you use Kies to download MK2 when you while rooted?
I have the Verizon S4... I took the OTA and updated to MK2. I then rooted using Saferoot.
All is good ...
Now.. Is the recovery unlocked? or do I need Safestrap Recovry to get ROMs on this?
Please advise.
Thanks!
A little help rooting mk2 via safe root. I've been rooted since me7 to mi1 to mj7. I flashed no wipe mj7 via Odin to take the ota mk2. Problem is the install bat closes as soon as I try to execute it. Drivers are correct Kies and Odin recognize my phone. Any suggestions?

That's caused by a defect in the install script that I introduced when trying to add more prompting to help people connect. Re-download and it should be OK.
Thanks re downloading now

Re downloaded script worked like a charm. it errored out on busy box install but titanium verifies I have busy box installed. Great work on the exploit as well as the bat file. Thanks again, I was about to lose my mind

What is link to mk2 stock file?
I can't confirm but it has been said that mk2 is backwards compatible. Flash mj7 stock via odin. Then ota back to mk2. I know it's a long way around but it's worth looking into.

Thank,s not a big deal to go back. I didn't think you could go back.
If you can go backwards that would be sweet. I would like to start running some custom Roms. I will give it a try.

You ONLY can go backwards from MK2 to MJ7. You seem to be interpreting this as being able to go back from MK2 to anything, and that's not the case.
Both of those releases only allow custom ROMs using Safestrap, and both support the same ROMs. There's no point in downgrading to MJ7.

Which way to update

I'm currently on ME7 and now that there is a root and Safe strap for MJ7 I'm gonna update to 4.3. Is the best route to use the MJ7 tar and run Odin or just keep letting the phone take the updates?
Thanks

That's going to depend on how much customizing you've done to your phone.
It's easier to take the OTAs to go from ME7 to MI1 then from MI1 to MJ7, as you don't need to hassle with ODIN.
If the phone has been modified, you may not be able to use the OTAs. In that case, flashing the no-wipe MJ7 will get you to where you need to go with less hassle.
Thank you.

Stock root safe update from ME7

Sorry if this is a dumb question but I find it harder and harder to find stuff around here anymore with people using the same keywords in their threads for ROMS and updates such as stock when it's actually a modified stock etc.
Anyway where is a stock root safe rom coming from ME7 to get to 4.3 or 4.4
I have SU set for root saver but anytime I try and go to the OTA I get a settings have stopped error.

Using an OTA, ME7 will update to MI1. That's rootable with Saferoot, so why worry about root saver?
MI1 will OTA to MJ7, which will OTA to MK2. Those are also rootable.
I'd recommend flashing a no-wipe MK2, which will get you to 4.3. That's available in this post.
You can't get to 4.4 yet since Verizon hasn't released it for our phones.

[Q] OTA 4.4.2 Fails with Root

I must be missing the how-to thread, but I've searched and come up empty handed...
I have a Verizon S4 on 4.3 with root. Originally I had 4.2 rooted, did the procedure to keep root when I upgraded to 4.3, but now I cannot upgrade to 4.4.2 without removing root (the OTA fails).
How do I remove root from 4.3 so that I can take the OTA update? I found this thread here, however, the Stock Firmware Page only lists 4.2.2 as an option, not 4.3. I didn't want to brick my phone by flashing to 4.2.2.
Is this really the simplest way to make my rooted 4.3 take the OTA for 4.4.2?
Thanks!

First of all, I would recommend staying at MK2. There are many reasons. If you REALLY want to goto 4.4.2, you have to open SuperSU and tap on Cleanup for permanent unroot. Then try taking the OTA.
EDIT: To get root back on 4.4.2, use towelroot.
EDIT 2: If you want to keep MK2 baseband but upgrade to 4.4.2, follow surges method.
Forgot to list that...I tried using SuperSU but it just sits there with the spinning circle forever and never says it has completed.
I have no real reason to go to 4.4.2, other than my desire to try the new OS...
xXsquirr3lsXx - Can you elaborate on why you recommend staying on MK2?
Code3VW - The other option you have is to ODIN the NC5 tar.
You could use the verizon repair tool , it will load the latest version of android and then use towelroot for root. I had the same problem on my wifes S3 and it worked and it is confirmed towelroot works on the S4.
