I have a problem pertaining to the storage space of my phone. I have an HTC One 32gb and I currently have about 5 gb of free space left. When I go into root explorer and check the space of my external sd card. It's only used up about about 15 gb. So my question is where is the rest of the space. I know the system takes up about 4-5 gb or something like that, but it shouldn't take up 17 gb! Also, there's a folder named "data" in my root storage, not the sd card folder, that takes up around 18 gb but I'm not sure what the files are inside. How do I free up more space on my phone? Any help or explanation would be appreciated.
Thanks!

I installed Bionic rom today. I know the phone has 16gb of memory. After install i have 12GB total, and 6GB available. What occupies the rest of 6gb? Is that rom that heavy? I am new so forgive my question.
The rom doesn't take up any storage room room as it's stored in a portion of the internal nand that's not counted. Besides, the rom is only a couple hundred megs large.
2 gigs is used for apps storage, the rest is internal storage (basically you can think of it like an internal sd card). Some space is lost due to file system overhead which you really can't do anything about.
As for where the 6 gigs went, if you were making nandroid backups, you should know they are quite large and can easily eat up a lot of space. If that is the case, delete some of the unimportant backups.
Another option you have, backup the contents of your internal sd card, then format it from the phones options menu. Copy back anything you need. Ensure you at least copy back the update.zip used by rom manager.
thank you.
As a owner of Nexus S without SD card, when I want to move an app to the external memory, I just click move to SD and it works fine. But in Galaxy S2 and other phones, there are 3 memories, internal, external and SD.
If I have 2 GB internal, 16 GB external, and without SD, and I try to move the app to SD, it says not enough memory, cause probably it tries to move it to the SD card which I don't have. So my question is how do I move apps to the 16 GB external memory ? and is it possible without root ?
Some people said it installing directly to the external, so I checked and it's not, I installed an app and saw the internal 2 GB decreasing, and the 16 GB stayed the same.
If I understood you correctly. S2 has 16 GB total storage, of this 16, 2 is used for app installation, 11.5 is for storage, and rest is system. You can only install apps in the 2GB portion, or in external SD (if app supports it). You cannot install app in the 11.5GB storage portion.

Tbh i wouldnt worry about it i have approx 150 apps installed and ive only used 650mb! I believe big game files install to the internal sd automajically anyway.
I see, thanks for your time !
So, I'm using Titanium Backup on my Photon and I took my 16GB sdcard from my evo and stuck it straight in my new Photon. As I'm looking at the home screen in TB, I notice 4 different partitions: System ROM (500MB), Internal (3.17GB), SD Card (9.56GB), and Ext. SD Card (15.9GB) {storage sizes are total, not available}.
A couple things stand out here. Firstly, I thought internal storage was 16GB...there is nowhere close to that amount in total (although in storage settings it says 8GB total). Secondly, because of the two partitions in the sdcard, I am limited in my storage. When I use root explorer (yes I am rooted), I have files stored in each of the two partitions which sometime prohibits some files, esp video files from showing up in my gallery.
Now, I have removed my sdcard, transferred all files to my computer, replaced it in the phone, and "formatted" it in the phone's menu, put the files back on it, then replaced it back in the phone. I figured this wouldn't do much since it's due to partitions but it was worth a shot.
Q: Can anybody help me determine how to free up the most space on my sdcard to be used for all files? Should I get rid of the sdcard-ext partition (that's how it shows up in root explorer)? Any help would be greatly appreciated as well as some clarification on how these partions are actually influencing the Photon ( I am aware that ext partitions are used mainly for A2SD but is it necessary in this case to have that partion?)
Its 16gb internal memory. Webtop takes up 3 gigs and there are 8 (I think) partitions total. That add up to the 16

Got my new Note, this is my first droid phone, and I got LOTS of questions. I currently have the i717 version, unrooted.
1) Is currently is any reliable way to install ICS on the i717?
2) How do I check if there were any previous kernel or ROM flashes?
3) Is there a reliable way to root the device WITHOUT increasing the counter (assuming it is currently at 0)?
4) How do I move installed apps, which are currently under "System Storage" to "USB storage"?
I can answer all of your questions very simply. Search and read.
yep all ur answers are here just gotta read,

Ya from what I gathered, there is ICS for the international version. I have yet to see something for the i717.
I dont have an SD yet, I was referring to moving them from System to USB storage.
I will be getting as SD soon though.

There are two potential SD cards for the Note. One is the internal SD card. This is actually the part of the phone where you store your music and other files. It's the space allotted by the OS for storage. The Note comes with 16GB of internal storage, but 2GB is reserved for the system. You cannot access this for data storage. There is also a portion of the internal SD card that is used by the OS itself.
The remaining amount of storage is about 12GB. This is accessible through a file explorer such as Root Explorer, ES File Explorer, etc, and is located in the /sdcard folder. This is where any App2SD type app will move apps to. This is also where you store your music and other files like photos, etc.
The Note also has a slot for an external SD card. To access it, you take the battery cover off and right next to the SIM card, there is a little slot for the micro SD card. The Note is published as handling up to 32GB micro SD cards, but there are plenty of people using 64GB micro SD cards with their phone.
Using the external SD card would allow you to add additional music and photos and other files. It is not used at all by the OS or system, so you would have as much space on it as you can after formatting it. (You lose some space after formatting.)
So to summarize: the Note has 16GB, about 12GB available through the internal SD card. You can add additional storage using the external SD card (officially up to 32 GB, unofficially up to 64Gb).

Got it, but still have a little question. I noticed when I install any app, it goes directly onto the 2GB system reserved space. What if I run out of that 2GB, what happens in that case, can I move the installed apps into the 12GB or I have to move it into the purchased/external SD card?

^^ got it, thanks.
K I researched and read, I still cannot find out if I can safely root my Bell i717, without increasing the flash counters.
Also, it seems there is no ICS yet available for this device.
Can someone please chime in?
wow this thread cleared up a lot for me. Still got a few questions though...so when i go to settings and click on an app and click "move app to sd" it moves it to the "internal sd" which has about 12gb of space? so then what goes on the external sd card? is the storage on the SD card ONLY accessible when you plug it into a computer and put it in mass storage mode? I remember when I had my nexus one, moving apps to sd actually put it on the external sd card..
The note is not a DROID. Droid is a verizon marketing term.
You can reset your flash counter. So even if you increase it by flashing CWM or rooting then just reset it back to 0. That's what I did.
Once CWM is installed flash all the ROMs you want through CWM. Just back up nandroid first and you can always go back.
I use a 64GB microSD card and store nandroid backups, photos, videos, podcasts, etc.
The internal SD (USB Storage) is used for app data.

Root ir phone throigh odin then go search dev thread for the rom u want read the requiements then flash they r all good
note @ 1.83
... You don't need root to flash a ROM.
Instead of rooting with Odin, just flash CWM with Odin then flash the ROM from there.
The only reason to root first, is to run titanium backup if you so desire
I have a few questions if anyone would mind answering them.
1) I have a 16gb phone, 10 gigs used up, and only 2 available. How can I clean up some of that memory? Where are the missing 4 gigs? (I have a 64gb micro SD running 4.4 kitkat Cm11)
2)can I put some of those apps on my SD card? If so how?
3) I read you can set up an extra gig or 2 as extra ram to make your device faster? How do you do that?

If you came from 4.1.x file system and upgrade to a newer one your files are in the 0/ folder. Pretty much your file system may have made duplicate files in the 0/ folder and in sd portion of your memory card. I myself to avoid this by formatting my entire internal sd card so
system
cache
davlik
sd card/media
that way I have a completely formatted storage with no hidden files lingering around.
Is it possible to designate a GB of a phone memory to add extra ram? I read somewhere that can be done

1. It is used by /system, /cache, boot, recovery, modem, etc. It's 16GB total, not available. If I had to guess, your space is being taken up by pictures, or games that store everything on /data and /sdcard rather than the external SD.
2. Not that I know of, at least not easily.
3. You can't add RAM. You can add swap, but it will just make your phone slower over time, not faster.
