AT&T mega question - Samsung Galaxy Mega

Rooted this morning with kingo so i could use Viper and tibu, my lockscreen now says "custom", so did i void the warranty yet? I believe I read installing a recovery will trip the knox for sure? And, if i did, can i flash twrp from Goo?
Not new to flashing, but I haven't had a locked bootloader since my DX. Came from note1 and note 2 to the mega.

And waiting, and waiting, and waiting and waiting........

I'm not that concerned with warranty, I wish it had recovery. Most of my phones I've had I voided the warranty the first day.

[Q] Rooting without unlocking bootloader?

Not sure where to post this.
Anyway, I want to know if it's possible to root an Android without unlocking the bootloader. My problem is I don't want anything wiped off the phone. I'm trying to get past the lock screen, because I found this phone in the street, so I want to get the numbers in it to try and return it. I've heard you can bypass the lockscreen if it's rooted. It's a Samsung Galaxy S Mesmerize, (or Fascinate).
PS its not stolen. I'm not gonna downgrade from a nexus 4 to this, and it's in such horrible condition I cant sell it.
Yeah, it sure is possible but its device specific. I rooted a s4 that still has a locked bootloader, but I know that you have to with an HTC. Good luck!

Any idea if it's possible with the galaxy mesmerize/fascinate? I don't wanna screw this up and end up with a brick. I've never done this before.

I've rooted my xt920 with framaroot apk, it automatically unlocked my bootloader, try it, if it fails it´ll probably undo the changes

I'm afraid you can't. The only way to root note 3 without triggering knox was kingo root, but it only worked for 4.3 and no longer works for 4.4 (tried it about a week ago)
you could root 4.3 then upgrade to rooted 4.4 without triggering knox, but i think it's too late for that now for you

This should do it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2655450
P.S. Triggereing knox will cause your phone to display message about warranty being void on boot. Effectively this voids your warranty with Samsung. People say that Sprint until now did not do much trouble about servicing phones with knox warranty bit tripped. This can change any time.

Towelroot, a new way of rooting Samsung phones?

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2783157 I don't know if this will work for our phones. I don't know if it's safe, but I thought I'd post it anyways. Read about it originally at androidandme.
Edit: People are reporting it works with the sprint note 3 and doesn't trip Knox.
So far so good
I gave the towel apk a try and I must say an excellent and easy root . I went from slim rom back to nc5 stock uprooted . Down loaded root checker pro then from the stock browser I downloaded the apk file . No problems with my reinstall of twrp. No problems flashing a new rom . Will say that busy box needs to be reinstalled but having no problems at all :good:

Did it reset your Knox counter when you rooted with towelroot? If so, did the counter stay at 0x0 after you reinstalled TWRP? I'm already rooted and using TWRP so the only advantage to me would be to clear that Knox counter.
Well I have never been concerned with knox so I didn't notice an actual 0x0 but I will say all Samsung apps updated. Also I had no warnings on boot . Until flashing a kernel . Unless I've been told wrong that has little to do with my equipment replacement warranty so my thing with knox is solved with a??

+1 about Knox
I could be wrong, but this is only a root method that does not trip knox. It is not meant to reset knox. It is being marketed as a root method.

Confirmed this method worked on NC5, when I get paid Friday I will be donating to this genius!!
Looks very interesting, I may actually try it if it does not trip Knox.
Well, nobody has reported is has so just do it.

Am I wrong in thinking that rooting isn't what trips KNOX, it's the installing of a custom recovery? I am very excited that this easy root is available and it wont trip KNOX but wont I need a custom recovery in order to flash a custom ROM or anything for that matter. I just want to figure this out before rooting my device.

So if anyone has a link to tell me otherwise i would love to know why Knox is such a concern . i got my note a few weeks after the release and tripped my knox asap .1. if your in contract you most likely have a warranty so bust the sucker into bits and learn a lesson . No updates from sprint or samsung the problem so what !!! i have yet to see an ota compare to the custom roms i run and eventually we will get the update/feature . The absolute only down side i see at this point is most likely the replacement note3 wont have the snapdragon or will it ? sprint usually sends you a refurb . I really ask this honestly I have been flashing for 4 years and barely could chicken peck the keys on my pc when i started . my day to day job is as a master plumber so i never touch computers , but 4 years later and going through an evo, epic 4g touch / briefly a s3 AND A NOTE 3 ON SPRINT NO LESS . I HAVE YET TO SCREW UP MY SAMSUNGS SO BAD THEY TRUELY HARD BRICKED. Im a risk taker I used towel 10 min after i first heard of it . My advice to a total noob is if you think you bricked but it comes on at all its not a brick give it 2 or three days and do your home work most likely a fix will be or is available . If its as sammy from sprint rwilco12 repository is a life saver . Please let me know what IS the trip in tripping knox if any one can and happy flashing. :good:  took me all them years to finally post in the forums lmao

Is it possible to root OF1?

the phone in question is a T mobile Galaxy S5, used to be mine running full root since 4.4.4 and had cn 11 on it, now wife is useing it and she wated it stock, so I odined the latest stock t mobile 5.0 firmware onto it, since then it has updated twice to 5.1.1 as I'm not too familiar with 5.1.1 I figured I better ask if it can be rooted.
if it can it will be much appreciated, right now it has done random reboots three times so far today and she is about to go back to Applel
5.1.1 can be rooted using hispasian's kernel. It can find in the android development thread. BTW, tell your wife that Apple is tight about "rolling back" and/or if at all, to previous ios versions if the new version stinks. I was lucky to perform rollbacks on older iphone generations but the newer ones are harder for obvious reasons. I stayed on 4.4.2 because of towelroot -- I'm not too fond of 5.1.1 because of the lag and unstable root methods right now.
Any questions? Please let me know. We would wan't want your spouse to join the "dark side" we call Apple. =) <couldn't resist the star wars pun there>
Thanks I'll loom there here in a minute I want her to be an android person I like androids better because you can remove the SD card, Apple has no SD card, plus as long as it's not a s6 you can swap batteries, I usually keep two spares in my Jeep when we go looking in NC for houses just in case

I meant FOL1 in the original thread
Please excuse my stupidity
well in another thread i was wondering if flashing TWRP+CM still works on FOL1 & the user said yes, so.... i'm sure root is always possible, unless your question is to keep knox (you're probably out of warranty anyway)
there are modified TW roms that are prerooted if self rooting fails
random reboots with what apps installed? disable any you dont use, disable gestures, samsung crap, etc etc...
I don't want knox, I don't want 5.1.1 either what I want is to put 4.4.4 on in or 4.4.2 and root it real fast before it updates

not sure what the rush is, there is no such thing as sudden updates that you cant stop, if you flash 4.4 then it's stuck on 4.4, but what if the newer baseband wont work well with the old android?
also, 4.4 is crap, you'll be insecure with fewer features & so on
i really find it unlikely that 5.1.1 is causing all problems, also you could even try 5.0.1

Turn off wifi and mobile data....
I tried but I was too late it went to 5.1.1, it is rooted though so until XDA cones out with a way to unlock the bootloader I have to wait. Because if I try installing TWRP like I did at first it hangs on the custom love indicator screen

No, but it's hilariously easy to get Samsung to honor a warranty on a device with a tripped Knox flag, if that's what you're worried about

Some clarification please over 5.0 root and knox

I just got my note 3 from a 3rd party. Oddly, it had a t-mobile card in it which assuming is a an ability it has, stock.
My phone reports to me that it is infact n900p. It is 0x0 knox and is NOT rooted.
My concerns: a valuable and intelligent, with personal experience with this same phone but differnt carrier, friend, told me that tripping knox not only voids your warrenty, but prohibits you from flashing modem roms ever again.
From my research: rooting my already ok2 base rom,is possible, but no matter what, will trip knox..or is that only on custom roms? Can i enjoy xsposed?
Apparently, this update dropped recently aswell, so am i boned? Will i have no choice but to trip knox?
Is my friend correct about loosing more then my (non existent ) warrenty?
Honestly, if the samsung warrenty is all i am losing, i am in..cuz sprint doesnt care about knox, i already know that from getting replacement, i have tep.
I hate sounding so noobish, been in the scene since my first htc hero, i am not new to this...

You know what I was thinking about the same thing since I just got my SM-N900P the other day from eBay and I rooted it then I put the TWRP recovery. I did a backup of my original stock rom after the rooting process and also I downloaded the stock rom from xda so worse comes to worse anything happens I'm downloading the stockrom and I'll start out fresh.

Well, I will tell you that my knox was tripped within a week of having my phone. I can also tell you that I have used Odin on at least three occasions to reflash stock so I could get the OTA updates, and have had no issues. Only thing to remember for when you flash back in Odin, you have to enter download from completely powered off. Two or three flashes might be necessary, but it can be done.
Just make sure you get the right ROM for the crrier you want to use (you probably already knew that). Hopefully you have your MSL.
So, the only thing to lose is your Samsung warranty...which is probably void anyways with you not being the original purchaser. Just have a copy of the stock ROM for that phone to Odin if you "send it south" by accident.
Your baseband version under device info is your modem version. I was able to successfully update it to ok2 after I flashed back to stock and got the OTA updates.
