Major Bugs in Google Play edition. - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

Keep in mind before purchasing.
After Google bootloader factory reset they remain :
1. Can't uninstall apps. Device reboots. App remains.
2. Can't enter Security Settings. Settings closes out.
These have been verified on a couple forums.
3.A few 3rd party launchers don't work. Black screen.
So...return to Google or wait on a Sony update. That's my question.
Don't think a replacement would make any difference.
Am Sooo seriously frustrated.

I'm also experiencing "Unfortunately, the process com.android.phone has stopped." on reboots and booting in general.
I'm thinking about just returning it within the 14 days if there's not movement on these issues, and maybe get a Nexus 5 or stick with my NEXUS 4 for a little while longer.

Sony is actually very good with timely updates and pretty sure they will within the 14 days... Guessing you'd be pretty disappointed with the N5 after this!

I hope it doesn't come to that!
Is also like to add that when I rebooted just now the phone error kept popping up so I had to constantly tap OK and make my way tap by tap to the mobile networks settings. It was terrible.

Am I mislead or is the point of a gpe edition that the manufacturer has nothing to do with updates, they're governed directly by Google teams?

That's probly right. Don't know much bout GPEditions.

Well, are Sony or Google aware of these bugs? Won't help discussing it here if they don't know about it. Even if they are aware of it, a little pushing never hurts, so contact them and tell it like it is.

I know that the myself and colleague that have one both called in and opened cases with google. Our plan is to wait it out for 10 days or so, then call in and RMA Return them if it's not resolved. The more people that call in and open a case the faster it will get attention.

The manufacturer is responsible for providing Google with the updates. Google sells and supports the devices, and pushes the updates out on the manufacturers behalf.

received mine yesterday, I called google today about the same issues. they started a replacement rma for me but stated they were going to ship me a "refurbished" model. to me that was unacceptable after paying full retail just 2 days ago. also they wanted to put a hold on my account for the full retail price until they receive the return, I can't afford to have an additional $700 held up on my account. So for me I am really hoping a fix is pushed out quickly as the RMA route is not acceptable to me

Hi Brian,
Thank you for contacting Google, my name is Garrett, and I had the pleasure of talking to you yesterday.
The reason I was not able to send you an RMA yesterday because I had to escalate this issue.
I have received news of an update for the Sony Ultra Z that should fix the problem you were experiencing.
I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you, and you should see the update soon.
If you have anymore questions you can reply directly to this email or by calling Google 24/7 at 855-836-3987

Market Issue

Is anyone else having problems with apps not downloading right after purchasing them? I've noticed this happening ever since the latest market update. This morning I bought an app at 9:30am and got the confirmation email right away. The app didn't actually download until 12pm, two and a half hours later. What sucks is that I don't care for the app and I didn't notice when it finally downloaded so now it's too late to get a refund. I wrote the dev that made the app in hopes that they will refund me.
I just got off the phone with a specialist with the app market and he's telling me that it's because the phone is rooted. He claims that it's probably a compatibility issue with the custom rom and the updated market. I don't believe it. I have never had an issue with a custom rom and the market.
Is this happening to anyone else? I'm using Xron and things were fine before the update to the market.
I don't believe its a root or custom rom problem. Last night I bought geeky avatar and it hung on the downloading screen for hours. When I woke up this morning it was installed. I bought it on my unrooted Samsung galaxy tab. I also just tried buying screen cast on my rooted 3d and same thing.
Edit.. I thought maybe my credit card was maxxed but that wasn't it. Also I did get a confirmation email (just checked)

I'm fairly confident the market issues are not related to the rooted ROM unless the ROM had a significant mistake/error. The ROM dev's thread should show complaints of the issue, if there is one.
I've had problems with the Market the last few days, as a developer, for in app donations not coming through. They've errored out as "Took too long to deliver". Which is nonsense since its all electronic. Also, very frustrating as people are offering to send me a donation for my app, Root Check, but due to Google's market issues they are being denied. This "took too long to deliver" issue was reported by quite a few developers and it was traced back to the most recent version of the Market. If people downgraded to the previous market version, the issue disappeared.
Perhaps if you downgrade to a previous market version, the issue might be resolved.
Also, was the market specialist over the phone able to grant your refund? It would seem their product errored in not allowing you access to your purchase for 3 hrs while their refund period was only 15 minutes?
I definitely relate to frustrations with the Market. Hope the suggestion helps and hopefully more people will post up with their experience!

Sorry, I had a typo and good catch. I should have provided more details.
If your device came with the previous version of the Market and then you found the Market updated itself, you can remove the update by Uninstalling it through the Settings -> Applications -> Manage applications.
If your device came with the latest version of the Market, you'll probably have to sideload/manually load the previous version of the Market.
Unfortunately, in my opinion, there are terrible solutions! Wish there was a better method .. I'm sure if anybody knows of one they'll help out and post up. Hope that helps!
Does anyone have the previous version file. I just checked and I can't uninstall the update. I just flashed Xron 4.2 last night and I'm guessing that he added the updated market. It doesn't give me the option to uninstall the update.

About the refund, I had already emailed the developer so the rep said if I didn't hear back after a day or two then to reply to the repos email he sent me and he would get it resolved.

The developer of the app I bought just refunded me for the app since I didn't like it. he also sent me this email -
Stephen,
Thank you for your e-mail. We have successfully issued you a refund for your purchase of Font SMS Bundle 2. Google Checkout has been down recently at various times the past couple of days, one down time exceeding 18 hours. This may provide reasoning for your downloads not going through as quick as they should. We thank you for your interest in Font SMS Bundle 2..
Maybe it's just an issue with google checkout and not the actual market. It makes more a little more sense to me. What does everyone think?

I agree, the developer's explanation does make more sense. His explanation also does coincide with the times I've seen issues the last few days. Perhaps the outages were confinded specific areas as I haven't experienced any.
I am frequently on both the google checkout site and the google android developer site managing my applications and neither one of these have been down for me in the last week between 6am - 10pm EST roughly.
Not sure what "outage" he is referring to as I haven't seen this occur from both over my sprint phone accessing the sites and over my home internet.
Either way, hope the issue is cleared up. It is unfortunate Google isn't more public about their issues and fixes instead we're left to speculate.
Appreciate the update and hope he's correct with the assumption we won't have any major outages in the future!

Yea, I don't know that it's fixed yet but I haven't actually tried buying an app since last night. I just hope he's right about the idea that it's Google Checkout that is to blame. In fact, each time I bought an app and had the problem, a popup came up that said something about I would receive an email when the issue is resolved.
I just noticed another problem. I went to search for a Go Launcher Theme and it says there is 3158 results. But, when I start to scroll down, it only shows me about 30 or so and that's it. WTF is going on? They have really screwed things up now.
Does anyone have the previous version of the market? PLEASE. This is ridiculous. Now I'm beggining to wonder if it's google checkout after all.
If no one has the file, do you know where I can find it?

Google/Samsung Repair Information

My Nexus 10 has light bleed, which seems to be common among the users here at XDA. It also has a "dim patch", and multi-touch doesn't work properly. So i've decided to have the device replaced/repaired.
I contacted Google 2 days ago and explained my situation, they said that the only options they would have would be a remorse return (i'm already out of my 15 day window), or replacement. As many of you know, in order to have a replacement done it is required for Google to place a ~$400 hold on your card associated with your Google Play account then a new device is sent. I don't have a credit card and I cannot have $400 tied up for 2+ weeks, so i'm not able to use that option either. At that time they directed me to Samsung for further assistance with a warranty repair. I don't have an issue sending the device in, so I call Samsung.
A Samsung rep stated that "we just make the thing, we don't provide any service" and directed me back to Google for assistance. I brought up the warranty information included in the box with the unit itself, and he quickly denied any ability to file a repair order for a Nexus tablet.
So I call Google...
The first rep indicated that ASUS is their "go-to" repair partner, and I should have contacted them. He agreed that Samsung made the tablet, as well as confirmed the prior information about the replacement policy. Amused, I called back and requested a Supervisor. The "Floor Supervisor" in that particular call center stated the following: "*sigh* We've been getting this all day long, sorry for any misinformation you were provided. The only option to have the Nexus 10 replaced or repaired under warranty is under our replacement. We will replace your tablet for the warranty period only, provided there is no physical damage to the device from the user. Samsung will not respond to any inquiries about the Nexus 10 tablet, and does not offer any services for warranty repair. Your only option is to replace it with Google. Do you have any further questions?"
I decided to call Samsung again, because I couldn't believe that was the case. Within 5 minutes I had an e-mail with shipping labels to have my device repaired. The agent was a nice guy, and apparently frequents XDA. We had a conversation about the tablet itself and the entire Nexus launch process, talked about specs and whatnot and disconnected the call.
At this point i'm annoyed and offended with the whole Google experience.
I've had a pretty good experience so far with getting my Nexus 10 replaced.
So my tablet stopped working completely a few days after getting the 4.2.1 OTA update (had the busted base firmware) so I called up the devices support on Google Play, explained the situation to the guy on the phone and he emailed me a form that told me what I needed to do. Used the provided link to organise a pickup time/location and used a special link to order a new tablet (with the money being held until it's verified as covered by warranty).
I have my new tablet with the old one being picked up last week. Hopefully it doesn't take long to verify the tablet broke from no fault of my own and they release my money. The only strange thing is the form for the device pickup was about the Nexus 7 so hopefully it gets to the right place (And if it doesn't then it's not my fault because the guy I talked to knew it was a Nexus 10 and and the special play store link was for a nexus 10).
On the other hand I've been trying to get a refund for my Samsung monitor for a few months and I haven't heard anything from them.

Yep. It's truly dreadful. Did Samsung indicate how long it would take for the repairs to be carried out? Are they covering the shipping costs too?

They said 1-2 weeks before the device is at my door. They emailed the shipping label to me also. I included a small note with a list of device issues, just in case.
Dropped it off this morning, I'll report back with return time frame and what condition I get it back in.
To Samsung's credit, once I found someone who was knowledgeable it's been pretty smooth, we'll see what happens. Has anyone else done a warranty service for this device yet?

Does this apply to the UK......
Please please let me know how this goes! I've yet to get a good one by Google but my original is the best of the lot. Everything other than the wonky notification light and screen are perfect and i don't want a worse one at the expense of the screen. If they just put a good panel in there it would totally be worth sending in for warranty work!

Sure, I have every intention of keeping this thread updated when I know something. As far as i'm aware and from what the employees at Samsung Support/Samsung Repair Center have said, this is one of the first (if not the first) warranty service requests processed for this device.
We'll see how it goes..
All of Samsung's standard service and support services apply. It's on their site as the GT-P8110.

Waiting with baited breath on the return of your device man. Tomorrow is Tuesday... hopefully they send you some kind of tracking tomorrow so you know it's back for sure. Would be sad if they put the new panel in, fired it up, actually looked at it, found that they have a real problem with the screen tech they put in this thing and had to go through a few to get a good one! I'm more afraid that they just check to see if you have one that powers up, take a 2 second look at it and send it back. I would honestly live with very minor light bleed at 80-100% brightness and NO DIMMING BAND. The band is what is distracting to look at. I honestly cannot see my light bleed anymore, even when I look for it. It is only one spot, and only visible (barely) when I first power up at max brightness. It's that awful half inch dimming that runs the entire camera side of the device... the LONNNNG edge.
I regret that I did not take a before picture, but I'll know if it's repaired. I hope it is flawless, but it's not something I'm expecting. No update today, hopefully some news tomorrow.
Sent from my HTC One S using Tapatalk 2
Well whatever their resolution... It will let me know the limitations of what they can repair. If my replacement sucks badly... Ill send that one back as well. If your repair nets you a near perfect repair then Ill just send the original in to them. As I've stated many times before, minimal light bleed under extreme conditions is OK for me... The dimming is not.

I completely agree. I don't really expect to have a flawless unit in terms of light bleed, but I'll admit that I am disappointed with the amount of bleed on some of the units we've seen.
Update on Samsung: According to the tracking system, the tech replaced the LCD panel and QC'd it, then two other individuals also signed off that it passes their QC. I plan to call today to see if anything else is being done, or if they plan to ship it soon. With the upcoming holiday, UPS may take require some extra time to get it here.

On one I returned the back cover had somehow become misaligned near the top where the snap on cover piece is, causing it to pop out occasionally.
Wonder if it might be something similar.

Google Edition Security Bug

Both myself and a colleague ordered the GPE version and they arrived today. Both of our devices, completely stock are unable to get into the Settings>Security menu's. When we launch it, it simply crashes and says "Unfortunately, Settings has stopped." Every other settings menu works fine. A quick google search turned up this article from earlier today.
http://blogs.computerworld.com/android/23270/sony-z-ultra-google-play-edition
I am sure this will be fixed soon, but I figured I would post here in case someone else came looking for answers (this is always my first stop).
Troubleshooting steps tried : Factory Resetting, Also tried launching the security settings before running all of the updates from Google Play store, still didnt work. We tried resetting a device and not signing into anything during the initial setup, no go.
This prevents us from being able to install exchange accounts, enroll in MDM, or even simply set a pin lock. Major, major issue, fingers crossed it's gets exposure asap.
We tried calling Google several times but "their system is down, try our call later" is the recording we got. Update - Finally got through to them. Opened a case and they escalated.
Also trying to uninstall any applications cause the device to reboot.
Yeah, looks like everyone with a Ultra GPE is affected by this. Not much to do with it until Google releases a fix though. You would've thought that Sony would notice a huge bug like this, but lets hope they are aware of it - which i guess they are since i assume a lot of their employees are using this model.
Try contacting Sony through their Chat Support and explain the bug to them, and give the person you're talking to the link you've posted.

when I attempted to contact Sony this morning for the very same bug with my unit they transferred me to Google. The rep I spoke with said he was unaware of the issue. Wants me to RMA the device to send me a "refurbished" one. I'm gonna wait out a fix I guess... Didn't pay full retail for a refurbished model.

[Q] Glitched screen

The issue is about screen getting glitched output. I don't think this is a software issue. There is some hardware issue because I tried flashing 5.0, 5.0.2, 5.1.1 still problem persists. Randomly at any time the glitched screen like seen in the pic is popped up in between from any app or just home screen. First i thought some app may be causing this but its not the issue. I deleted all the apps still this problem stays.

Hmm thanks
I've been spreading word in xda about the same issues. If you search the Q/A forum, you'd find too many people having this issue. This is due to a faulty GPU when the device heats up excessively. Recurrent issue in a Nvidia chip. If you bought it recently within 30 days on eBay, I'd suggest you return your device and claim your money back. Else I'm afraid you are screwed since neither HTC nor Google offer warranty if purchased through unofficial sources in India.

Recurrent issue in a Nvidia chip. If you bought it recently within 30 days on eBay, I'd suggest you return your device and claim your money back. Else I'm afraid you are screwed since neither HTC nor Google offer warranty if purchased through unofficial sources in India.

Now that what i feared. Let me see if they will take this back. Anyway thanks for the info that was really helpful
Unfortunately your Nexus 9 is toast. This happened to my first one and it got so bad it would happen during boot and I couldn't get any further. HTC was next to unless. Delt with them for 3 weeks trying to get an exchange. They are clueless. They wanted to try flashing stock image over and over. I'm like dude, I'm a Nexus owner. Don't you know your customer base? Anyways, best buy agreed to exchange it for a new one if I bought their premium protection plan, which I did gladly. But it is a hardware failure. There's no fixing it.
I just had my day one nexus replaced for the same issue last week. Had been getting worse for months. I called warranty service, told them about the screen corruption/noise/lockup issue needing a mainboard replacement. sent my tablet back and they overnited me a replacement that appears brand new (mine was mint condition as well). Still has lightbleed and so-so buttons but works great and I've put it through its paces. Only thing I had to tell them was the serial # but I was the original amazon purchaser.
Is it a newer build date than your original?
I had an experience similar to techiedj's. Got my old N9 replaced by Google a few weeks ago. Replacement looked brand new, but is actually an older built with slightly crappier buttons. Curious how long this one will last now...
These are the symptoms that I saw: At some point the screen started to flicker for a few seconds, then froze, and slowly turned black. After a few second I could turn on the display again. The area on the back next to the camera had become hot, but apps that read the sensor values did not really show high temperature (50 degrees or so). A good way to trigger it was to open Chrome and open multiple pages in a short time (opening different links in new tabs). Surprisingly, seemingly GPU intense games were less affected by this than Chrome. Factory reset did not help, even when I skipped the initial login/restore apps step.
Hopefully they aren't all doomed to this fait at some point. I have best buys replacement plan now, so this this can die early Jan 2017 and I'll get whatever the new Nexus is then.
Not really. HT4AJ I think it was, HT4AY on this one.

I went from an AE to an AF. Hard to believe best buy still had old stock, but I guess they didn't sell a lot of these. Buttons are nearly perfect on this one though. Way more tactile and the volume up isn't sunken in.

Samsung Note 7 faulty and replacement or had enough

This thread is for those who have received their note 7 and are returning it due to battery issue or other issues like build quality, screen scratching easily, lag etc
I'm still on pre-order and no sign of stock but i checked on CPW website uk and its stating date of 21st Oct.
Also those who like me still waiting for phone. I'm really considering cancelling my order and wait for Iphone 7 plus, Google pixel xl, Moto Z, LG V20 I hate it when a top end phone lags or isn't buttery smooth.
Would be interesting to know if you're waiting for replacement and how long is the wait? Also if change of mind and y and what will you purchase instead?
I'm in the uk BTW.

I'm returning mine because of the battery. I've found the phone to be excellent with absolutely no lag or stutter. In fact I'd go as far as go say it's smoother than my Nexus 6P which had thermal throttling performance problems. I'm waiting for a replacement from Samsung as this is the phone of the year for me. I believe the Exynos version the UK has is more fluent than the US Snapdragon version. Samsung told me it was a minimum of 3 weeks for a replacement.

Another interesting point, some who have tried to return product have been told to keep the phone until replacement. This includes amazon and cpw the reason I believe none of the retailers are willing to take the risk of a potential fire in their premises. Imagine having hundreds or even thousands of these phones just waiting to set on fire. Just in case if anyone was wondering.
Amazon is issuesing refunds and asking their customers to keep the phone until further notice, might be the case for some lucky buyers get refund and get to keep phone.

CPW have changed their position today, automated message advises to contact Samsung for a replacement, however, when I got through the advisor said they actually want the phone back immediately due to the fire risk.

That makes sense must have deliberated between lawyers as who would be liable etc.
Risk of fire is probably very low but not worth taking risk.
all other competitors will be loving it especially apple, this all plays nicely into the hands of Apple. What timing.

That's interesting no lag or stutter at all, smoother then nexus 6p. I must admit I do find that hard to believe however if what you say is accurate then I could give it more thought.
I wonder if anyone else has found it buttery smooth.

Yes, my 6P feels slow in comparison to the Note 7 (Exynos).

I'll have to see this to believe it, the unit i tested in CPW stuttered lag. Even the reviewers on youtube all suggest there is lag.
I hate lag also and my Note 7 is great, I see no lag or stutter, no overheating. It runs great. I was worried about Touchwiz but it's fine.

This will be a first if there's absolutely no stutter or lag in note 7. Still not convinced as every Samsung phone I've owned has shown lag.

Mine also is smooth as silk, its a great phone, i'll wait for a new one. I gave my details to samsung customer care yesterday. I also kept my old phone, while i wait, i change the option of fast charging to off. Also i charge phone when i am awake and keep a eye on it. Honesty it doesn't even heat up while charging. I also sometimes shut it off when charging sometimes. I am not worried that it will catch fire. I think the ones that have a problem would show symptoms, just like us when we have problems we have symptoms!

Agreed, there's just no lag or stutter. It's the first time I've seen it on a Touchwiz phone. It flys.

yes agree, i had a note 3, 4 (long time) and short time with a 5, but note 7 is in another category all together in the way it operates. I didn't use touch wiz because i have been always using Nova with no animation. I really like this phone it's beautiful to look at great in the hand and works without fault.....
I'm debating. Dropped mine today from about a foot onto tile and the screen shattered. Using a Spigen neo hybrid too... I'm so torn. Love the Note, but wtf!

Thats a real bummer!!! Good news i would think it is still covered for a replacement! But according to corning glass it could happen 20% of the time and 80% it should be ok. maybe the angle it hits the ground and surface. I for sure have no expertise in these matters...But i feel for you and all of us that invested in this phone....we shouldn't be experiments for these large companies to test their products!
I returned for a refund and now am back using my Note5. But I will rebuy the Note7 once I am sure the battery issue is fixed.

How did Samsung mess up? Its a developing story and they responded as soon as they could. Do some of you sit anxiously waiting to catch your next breath??????
They've identified the issue within a couple of days and are working on a resolution plan which is why they are saying they'll contact us in the next week once stock and plans are understood!
The problem has been the messages coming from retailers and we all know they are full of sh.. just to get you off the phone!
Give them time. I'd rather this was managed that rushed with mistakes.
If you fancy an iphone then what are you doing on Android waiting for the note7. If you jump to the LG...good luck there. I've never even seen v10 in the UK! And how do you know they won't have an unlucky problem...**** happens

Do phones catch fire when turned off?
I'm sure the real reason for leaving phones with customers until exchange is that they know the risk is low so why inconvenience customers by taking their phones off them and potentially leaving them without and at the back of the queue having refunded them. It doesn't work.

Wow man. Easy tiger I think people have the right to be annoyed frustrated considering the nature of the problem. Battery exploding I mean it's pretty bad, yes they are trying to resolve the issue but people expect better especially when you fork out around £700.
As for sharing info, experience, sentiments and considering other options is nothing new. No one should feel threatened by it. This is the way of the world, it maybe not right or wrong but it's the way it is.
So dude join the discussion and take it easy.
