Ubuntu Touch? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

So, I'm sure I'm not the only person here that wouldn't mind seeing a build of Ubuntu Touch available for our devise. BUT, it would most likely have to be done through safestrap.
Would any dev be willing to work on this??

This would be awsome :good:

Idk if Ubuntu Touch could be done on Loki, but definitely not safestrap. I started porting it to the Note 2, which is a lot easier to work on then our phone, and it basically is based on a modified CM/AOSP tree & kernel.

I'm still working on it on the note 2 ut, I'm just learning. That phone has a fully unlocked boot loader on an exynos processor, so the kernel stuff is just simpler than on our Qualcomm Snapdragon's.
I just know that to run a totally different OS, even if it is still Linux based, requires heavily modified low level kernel code and safestrap unfortunately can't touch that.

I agree! I want this on our E970. I would be SO happy

We have it running. We just need to modify the kernel and some binary files.

Porting to e970 will be easier then ls970. We can boot mako kernels n Roms. Just device specific changes need to be made like captive keys sd-card ect.
The obvious is the asserts and partions need to be changed in the update zip.

I already said we have it running using the mako build. We are the same device man.
I'm booting using the Mako kernel on my Sprint LG OG.

Either way the ls970 won't have CDMA working for now, so I haven't really pursued it. I'll look into fixing ofono though.

So if you have it running, is there a flashable zip that I can use already? I've wanted to try Ubuntu Touch for so long! Once it's ready, I'd love to try it. Is there any special steps as well? TWRP works?
So let me see if I understand this:
Download saucy-preinstalled-touch-armel+mako.zip and saucy-preinstalled-touch-armhf.zip from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-touch/daily-preinstalled/current/
Remove asserts in one (or both?) of the zips in the file located at meta-inf/google/android/updater-script
Flash armel+mako.zip first, then touch-armhf.zip second
Reboot and it should work?

Only need to get rid of asserts in mako. Other than that, you're right on.

No android apps do not work. No idea on the rest. I would think most of those would work but maybe not MMS. No way for me to test though.

If I wanted to port it to the E970, could I just use our device tree for android, and modify the needed flags for it to compile correctly? I think that would work...

I've tried to remove assets but I keep getting error in update-binary, so I replaced the binary with one from a CM rom for our phone, and same error. I tried to change the assets from mako to geeb but still no luck
I barely messed with Ubuntu Touch during my short time on the N4 conversion. My question is: Are the features of desktop Ubuntu available on Touch? If so, I absolutely love Ubuntu and would definitely enjoy this. Haven't done too much research on it so I apologize if it's a dumb question.

The first articles I read months ago said Ubuntu Touch was going to be based on Cyanogenmod. So have they gone all the way & made a full-fledged mobile linux incarnation?

It used to be cm with Ubuntu running (chrooted) on top, then they flipped it, so it's Ubuntu running with only the necessary services from cm such as surface flinger (for display rendering) and rild (for radio).

Verizon Galaxy s4 MI1 update

Hey guys, just some things I've been curious about lately. I just updated to MI1 and rooted it. Is there any way to download safestrap and install custom ROMS such as CM 10.1? Can maybe give me the link to a YouTube video showing me how to flash roms with safestrap? Someone please confirm (or deny) affirmatively whether or not I can flash specifically CM and if not, what about any other ROM? I would probably prefer the stock 4.3 ROM over anything

you can not use cm roms or any 4.3 has to be 4.2
But 10.1 is 4.2.2
Sent from my SCH-I545 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
You can only use stock kernel with safe strap and cm has there own kernel so it won't work
What about AOKP or the stock 4.3 ROM?
Sent from my SCH-I545 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
TW only. Stock kernel only.

Are there any AOSP based ROMS that allow use of the stock kernel? If not, are there plans to show custom kernels in SS?
Sent from my SCH-I545 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
It is impossible for an AOSP rom to be based on the stock kernel. There is a list of safestrap compatible roms in the general section, I would suggest Eclipse as it has AOSP styling.
Kexec support is being worked on which will enable custom kernels, but its going to take a long time.

Why is it that I could flash with MDK and not with newer versions? Something with kernels?

That's because the bootloader in the S4 is locked, and will not boot an unsigned recovery (i.e. an official one from Samsung.)
There's a bug in the MDK bootloader that allows bypassing that check, which allows a custom recovery to be installed and booted.
That custom recovery then allows you to install whatever ROM you like.
Releases after MDK have that bug fixed so there's no way to use a custom recovery. Safestrap allows you to start a custom recovery by using the standard kernel to get Safestrap loaded and started up. Since it's not running on the bare metal of the phone, Safestrap can't overwrite the bootloader or kernel, so you can only use ROMs that work with the standard kernel.
Eventually, if kexec gets working, Safestrap will be able to host nonstandard kernels, making many more ROMs possible.
That is sweet because I really want to try CM or AOKP. I will probably like AOKP better but who knows. Can I expect this update allowing for custom kernels soon?

Who knows? That's why I said "if kexec gets going". If the devs can't figure out how to boot a custom kernel, Touchwiz-based ROMs are it.
Oh okay. Thanks a lot though hopefully kexec does get going cause I'm not a big fan at all of touchwhkz

(Patience is key) I think some developers are working on it now, but it is a challenge to port a new version of stock android on to the jfltevzw because the device is different than your average nexus device. Then you also have to take in the fact that devs are working on other projects on the moment and wish not to abandoned them.
Thank you for the post. And I do understand that. Very anxious!

[Q] Safestrap and AOSP

Why do AOSP ROMs not work with Safestrap?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Because the bootloadet is looking for the stock legit firmware signature., without unlock we can't change the stock I'd OR tell it don't look for stock Id anymore. This is simpliest explanation.

Well, until kexec gets figured out, safestrap only allows us to use the stock kernel... which only lets us run touchwiz. If we could run other kernels, AOSP wouldn't be out of reach.
