[Q] Really really slow charging - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi every one,
My phone takes literally forever to charge. it has managed to get to 50% after a good 3 hours-ish and that from a wall socket
I feel as though I may have damaged the charger port on my phone, i feel this damage is caused by water.
What parts of the charger port could possibly be affected? the fact that it still charges means I am lucky but honestly I cant have a phone which charges at the rate it takes a snail to slime its way to a race. does anybody have any advice?
Thank you in advance

Read the 400+ other identical threads on charging, don't start a new one.
If water damage then you need a repair centre, probably a new phone.

The gs3 stock charger has problems with it. I changed it FOUR times. And the customer service people said tat the gs3 charger has problems. I was amazed Samsung didn't even bother to fix it.

I had the same problem, would take forever to charge. I bought an original Samsung 2 amp charger and it charged great for a few weeks and now its back to charging slow again. I check with "Galaxy charger current". Phone is supposed to charge at 1000 and it only charges between 200-600 most of the time, and the number always changes, never the same current. Any ideas why this is? Could it be rom related or is this purely hardware? I am on Temasek's 4.4.2 with Yanks kernel if that makes a difference.

The only issue is that I can use my phone as much as I want without having to worry about it dying while I'm out. On previous phones I had to change my behavior and usage to make it last. Granted I wish it lasted 5 days like my phones did in the 90s, but the trade offs are worth it.
I'm with everyone else what issue 22 hours of battery life for me.
huh.
have no idea what you're talking about.
How are you charging the phone? If you use the OEM charger supplied with the phone, it is taking overnight to get to 80%? Any other charger than OEM, or charging using your computer, is very likely to exhibit the problem you're talking about, but if the problem is with the OEM charger, that's really strange, especially for two devices. Mine takes about 2.5-3 hours for 0 to full using the OEM charger.
heres the thread

A quote from the OP of that thread "It only seemed to charge at a reasonable rate with the stock charger that shipped "
So the issue is that if you use the charger that Samsung provided there is no problem... but when you use some knockoff or charger made for another model phone, then it doesn't charge as quickly? And you want to report to Samsung that these third party chargers don't work as well as the OEM one? If so, I would love to be the person at Samsung responding to that complaint.
Check out the other thread on this topic. It seems they have explained the issue. It's related to a couple of shorted wires in the charger.

That's what I wanted to find out from this OP. I'm the OP of the linked post, and I'm not complaining at all that 3rd party chargers do not charge as fast as the OEM charger. I was just providing that information. But I'm curious if the OP of this post is using the OEM charger and having issues, or if he/she is using a 3rd party charger, and having issues? No word back from them, so I guess they don't care that much lol.

Battery Problems

Ok so phone doesn't charge as fast as usual and while charging and using it loses battery percentage and never has before. Also when I get a full charge then unplug it goes straight down to 12%. What do you guys think.... Battery or port problems?

The only way to know that answer is to rule out possibilities. Try different batteries and chargers.

I just bought another battery. I found it was the battery more than port problems or anything like that. My friend and I have the same phones, same roms. We tested this by first going through 3 power cycles. After we charged it, we had only the same apps working, except for some minor checking of FB and twitter (I don't use twitter, but he does).
After our 4th power cycle, it seemed like his phone was dying faster w/ my battery in it. His battery in my phone lasted about 5-10 hours more, I did my normal daily activities on it, even played some youtube videos in class.
So I bought a new one, and bam, stays alive more than 12 hours

[Q] Is battery capacity loss covered under warranty?

Had my S3 8 months and after some tests my battery's already down to around 1600mah so anyone know if it's possible to get myself a new battery under the warranty in UK at CPW?

Are you somehow implying that was a dumb question? Because I know there's no reason Samsung has to replace it, But Apple would...
And the battery's useless to me now and had to replace with an Anker 2200mah and just want a non insulting answer how far I can push my luck with Samsung's warranty.
Check the warranty information batteries are covered but it could only be a 6 month warranty on them, it is shorter than the phones warranty.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
batteries naturally lose capacity over time. most manufacturer suggest you get new ones once a year.. so at 8 months, you're pretty close to the recommend date already so I high doubt it especially considering it's a removable one

Dammit you right...
It is only 6 months warranty on batteries, I just assumed it was 12 months because you always hear that you should replace rechargeable batteries every 12 months, But still 8 months, less than 300 charges and rarely charging at below 20% shouldn't be enough to cause a 25% capacity loss and shows it has weak cells.
how do i test my battery capacity ?
please don't ask questions in General
How have you been charging it?
Almost exclusively used USB here, 600-900mA charge. Been 6 months, one charge per day, no noticeable drop in Battery Monitor Pro stats..
Dodgy wall charger? Noticed a few posts saying it might be. Recommend BMP simply for the voltage out of range alarm feature. Went off once using the wall charger in the car via a power converter (don't have a car charger).

Been hearing that long before the Internet was created and makes sense because lithium cells do usually hold full charge about that long used daily, And anyway I just checked the warranty on my Anker 2200mah & 4400mah batteries and they got an 18 month warranty so shows phone manufacturers are just being greedy so they make more money on accessories giving a short warranty.

Fast charge is disabled by default (on obvious reasons, google it), but hey... anyone is free to make it work if he can find a proper solution.

Yes I am , thank you, cause the slow charge issue was elaborated and mentioned so many time around XDA but seems no one cares to search and read.
This phone with and with original charger, and AFTER teh update from Gingerbread to ICS/JB is charging as per specs. On Gingerbread there was a flaw that permitted to charge it upto 900-1000 mA but the phone was rather hot, I recall charging mine in an hour and a half or 15-20 minutes more, from 2-3% to 100% back when phone had GingerBread.

You can use 2.1A output chargers too, it is simply not going to draw all that but you might get the better on the go recharging while you're using the phone with heavy apps. Just think of the dual car chargers - they have both 1A (phone) and 2.1A (tablet) output. SatNav on 1A is zeroing or still draining your phone battery, while 2A can slowly charge it on the go.
You just give it a needed juice and if the discharge is so greater then recharge, there's not much you can do about it.
Call it a flaw, but Samsung did it cause of longevity of their batteries and li-ion technology.
That is why I indicated iCrap and BB - their fast charge is provoking rather fast discharge too cause the battery will not hold it. I have colleagues with BB who're charging in an hour but get their phones depleted in 3 hours of usage... I wouldn't want that from my S2 for sure. :good:

It doesn't matter what the output current of the charger is... the phone will only draw 650mA.
The charger I got with my S2 delivers 1A but my phone only draws 650mA. Actually the hardware doesn't support it.
IMO, 3hrs is pretty fast for a full charge.
Edit: Just noticed that Fevves already mentioned all that...
adressing sfafrorn
Some kernels have the Option to change the charge rate but even at 650mA the phone will get very hot if you are doing something on it while charging

The output with wireless is max 500mA so it will take long time if you are expecting to charge your battery full

I woke up at 87% this morning as my phone was nearly full when I went to bed. More concerning is why I have so much battery drain.. But yes, once my phone reaches full charge it does *not* resume unless I remove it from the charger and put it back on. Really grinding my gears!
I know that, with some wireless chargers, there have been problems in the past with overheating. If you have to leave the phone on the Aukey Luna charger for a long time to get it charged, have you experienced any overheating issues?
