[Q] GT-I9300 International Version Won't Power On - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I bought the unlocked Samsung Galaxy SIII from Newegg.com. One day (of course just after the one year mark) while the phone was just sitting there, it decided to shutdown. Then I am not able to start it ever again. Here below are things I've tried and I still cannot power it on.
1. Plugged the phone to my computer using USB and then tried to start by pressing power. Nothing happens.
2. Plugged the phone to wall charger and then tried to start by pressing power. Nothing happens.
3. While leaving the phone plugged into my computer, removed the battery and then tried the power button. Nothing happens.
4. While leaving the phone plugged into wall charger, removed the battery and then tried the power button. Nothing happens.
5. Tried the reset routine of holding volume up, power, and home buttons at the same time for 90 seconds. Nothing happens.
6. Tried to start download mode by holding volume down, power and home button at the same time for 90 seconds. Nothing happens.
I've also sent the phone to a local mobile phone repair shop, and they couldn't get it started at all. The shop owner told me to contact Samsung directly, which I did, then Samsung told me this is an Australian version of the phone, so the only way to get it fixed is to contact Australian support. I am in the US, and sending the phone to Australia is not an option for me.
Any help to troubleshoot this phone is greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot!

Oh yeah, here are details of the phone:
Samsung Galaxy S3
Model Number: GT-I9300
SSN: -I9300GSMH
S/N: R31C50Z4XQF 12.05
I don't know what version of Android the phone is running.

Looks like an SDS. And btw... edit your post and remove the IMEI. Never ever post your IMEI on a public forum or anywhere else seen by the public.

Thanks for pointing out the IMEI issue. I have already removed it from my post.
So what do I do now if it is a SDS? The phone never powers on.....

Hate to say this but you now have a expensive paperweight there... unless you know someone who can JTAG repair your phone then you can't do anything else. You can also try handing it again to a Samsung repair center and have it replace it's motherboard for a fee. I just don't know if they will replace it for sure since you said that it's an australian model.

Did some more research. You are probably right that I got the SDS. And it's too bad that the phone is already dead, so I can't do any patches.
I did find this repair shop who can replace the eMMC for 150 bucks. I think I am going to give that a try. Have you heard of them?

Bricked the Galaxy SII

Think I bricked my phone somehow. To the story, I had phone in download mode to flash the leodroid rom which didn't flash at all, as I waited for 10mins to see if it would flash, but to no avail. Anyway, after that I disconnected the phone from pc, removed the battery, inserted the battery again then BOOM! Nothing, no download mode, no recovery, no boot screen, just a blank screen, a brick.
Dunno, if anyone else has had this problem, but if you managed to somehow get yours working again please tell me! And if you can't, guess I'll have to send it back. Anyone know how to deal with online shops, when returning phones?
Cheers in advance.

I`m assuming you`re unable to use volume down + Home + Power buttons together and keep holding them until a menu appears on the screen?

I'm no expert when it comes to things like this
but if you can't access download mode via the button combos
have you tried using one of these 'usb jigs'?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9YRPWU4waa4
it should force your phone into download mode
i think you can either purchase them from a member of this site, forgotten his name :\, or there are plenty of options on ebay

Leodroid, I am guessing this is not a SGS2 rom ?
Well hopefully a JIG works, I have ordered one from ebay earlier this week, hope it comes soon. And yeh the 3 button combos doesn't work. Although I thought the jig won't work if you're unable to power on your phone. Guess I'll give it a go regardless. It wouldn't hurt to try.
Cheers the the help guys

it is, although its under investigation right now.
i had this issue but i was able to go back using 3 button procedure.
i would suggest you take battery out and pop it in and immediately hold the 3 buttons and don't let go until you see something on the screen.
Also, i made my usb jig the other day .. it literally took 10 minutes cutting thru the usb. Just go to any electronics shop and get 300K ohms transistor. put the usb you made in your phone and connect the transistor with your hand on the correct pins .. no need to even solder anything .. just make them touch for few seconds.
My brother held the phone and i held the transistor ... poped the battery in and i was at download mode.
best of luck.
Hi,
I have exactly the same problem here with my phone, a brand new Samsung Galaxy S II.
After trying to flash a new firmware I rebooted my phone into "Downloading mode" and starting (i think) a veery earli version of Odin3 software. But when I didnt know what to do I just shut down my phone and closed the applikation.
And then: Totally stone dead, as a brick. I have ordered a USB-thing from ebay, but I'm pretty sure it aint going to work. No response on either powerbuttons, combos or anything else. Just a black screen. Is the only solution to send it in to Samsung service center or is it any else more possibilty? (Excuse me for bad grammar.)

Why would he need to do that? He can't even see the Download mode screen. How is anyone at Samsung Service center going to see a counter that won't even come on.
Samsung Service Center is going to just jtag flash it, then send it back. Which also wipes the counter, and even if there is a hidden counter, it's erases that as well.
Anyways, I don't think the USB Jig would work. USB Jig will only work if the bootloader is still intact. The USB JIG uses a 300k or 301k resistor, not transistor.
The reason the thread is closed is because it was based off someone else's work, and not giving any credit.

Anybody in the 757 have a mini-usb jig??

Bought one, but have to wait till it ships, so figured I would ask if anybody in the 757 has a mini-usb jig that I could use to get my Note into download mode. Send PM if you do.

Walk me through that one, no response to anything, power and up volume results in nothing. Plugging into usb results in nothing Windows, ODIN nor Kies registers it.

If you can see the samsung bootloader then yeah there's hope otherwise you're gonna need the $100 fix for it.
But at least people are responding, I got no love on my end, lol
keeping things in perspective, as I posted before, I have never seen anyone report that a jig does any good on this phone..
You would be better off either using JTAG, or calling Samsung, and playing stupid, and tell them it died after you did an update that the phone requested..they will send you a replacement, with no questions asked.
go through the general and q&a sections; you will see that a jig doesn't do anything for this phone..

Well smokestack76 told you differently yesterday. He said over 20 times with a jig. Plus for $1.60 I will give it a try.
yes, for the price, if it makes you feel better, try it..
and, if you believe him, when you can find 20 others that said it did absolutely nothing, then that's your choice.
the sooner you send it in to Samsung, the sooner you will have a working phone..
If Samsung is wiling to send you a loaner phone while you're under warranty i can't see why you wouldnt do that.
I know Nintendo is awesome like that but apparently Samsung reps are quite jaded when you do something silly like ask an honest question.
I wish Samsung would honor warranty services if the device hasn't been on the market longer than year.
I'm A. Maybe he Made a mistake and wants to own up for it insted of weasling into a fraudulent phone.
B. I would be a little jaded as well when I get people calling me all day that have messed up their own phone and are now trying to steal from me.
C. Samsung does honor warranties a year after the device has been on market. YOUR WARRANTY DOES NOT GO INTO EFFECT UNTIL THE ORIGINAL DATE OF PURCHASE. not when the first one of its kind rolls off the assembly line.
Also, wase a jig does work of you are not actually bricked, if you were to be soft bricked the jig would force download mode. I had a captivate I built a jig for, first thing I did was try it on my note. Bam, download mode.
And finally op it's a micro usb jig not mini. Mini is bigger than micro
yeah bro, I know a jig works for SOME phones; it helped me bring my S2 back to life..
However, I have read many many reports of it doing nothing for the Note, so that was why I said what I did..
Plus, people are using the term "Bricked" around here in so many ways, that its hard to know what they mean when they say it..to me, a bricked phone is DEAD, and nothing but an expensive paperweight.....
I can take a video of my note going from off to download mode with nothing but my jig. However the same jig that works on both my phones is out of resistance tolerance on my brothers sgs2.
And yes bricked is used much too often,it is a term to describe when your phone is inert, has no pliability and just sits there, like the baked red clay building material it was named for.
was curious to see if the OP had any luck with the jig....
Well the jig did nothing for me. I suggest send your phone to mobiletechvideos.com for repair, he goes through the JTAG recovery method, and he also unlocked mine... he did a great job. I bricked my Note flashing a ROM for another device by mistake, could not use the jig for anything, so had it repaired. Feeling really happy now... hope this helps.
the jig isn't and was never meant to fix a hard brick...
[history lesson]
Back on captivate, certain bootloaders would disable the button combos for download and recovery, making a simple (I hate the term... But) soft brick into a much stickier situation, so it was discovered that using 300k ohms of resistance across certain pins on the usb port from a powered off state would trigger download mode in seconds, making you then able to simply odin a stock rom and try again.
It was later discovered that the jig had the same effect on the sgs2 with the added benefit of restting the flash counter.
[/history lesson]
If you flash a firmware for the international note on an i717 you will need jtag because you are indeed bricked of the hard variety.

Nope gig still in the mail, however took Note to ATT Device Service Center and they told me mother board failure and replaced it. So might not have been related to flashing, inspection seem pretty in depth, removed back cover, using multi meter type of tool and said mother board didn't provide correct response to input. My mandatory 10 days to return no functioning unit is 17 Dec so don't think will have chance to try the jig before I send it back or be charged $549 for non-functioning unit.

Galaxy S2 does not boot at all...Bricked?

Hi, Hope i am in the correct forum,
i am using galaxy s2 i9100 and was running stock ICS rom+kernal, singapore ROM. No flashing was done, other than official OTA updates
I have encountered a rather strange problem. My phone was acting a bit strange before i did anything (Fast battery drains) , so i did a factory reset as recommended by samsung.
It seemed to solved the issue, then i decided to enable force GPU in developer options, and then my phone started acting up. It would not want to shut down (the lights of the keypad wont go off), and now it wont want to turn on
I have tried reinserting battery, letting it charge, but all i got was the camera part of the phone getting hot. Nothing else, no display, nothing
I cant even enter recovery/download mode (accessed by reinsert battery + Hold Vol buttons+Home + power button right?)
What can i do to resolve this? Strangely enough, I am running totally stock ROM and Kernal. I have no knowledge on how to use odin and all. I have no more warranty, so i can only ask for your help. Any help would be really appreciated

Where can i find a USB jig? Might be worth a shot
And personally i hate all apple products, and i never use their products before
I have been using android for nearly 2 years, except that i never dared to delve into root/flash as i did not want to void warranties.
There's a thread in General where people offer to lend their jigs to other people. Check; there might be someone near you who can help. Alternatively, search eBay (and probably elsewhere online) "Samsung Galaxy S2 jig". Costs a few dollars.

Actually, now that I look at it. I'm not sure it is his sig, per se. It seems to be a standard line he ads to his posts. Perhaps TheUnderling can clarify ?
Good luck. If the jig is no go, given your warranty isn't good, look for JTAG repairers. Do a Google search, or look here, or ask local mobile repair shops. If it ends up not being JTAG'able, as TheUnderling mentioned, you'll need a motherboard replacement. If you get to that point, you can either source one from a 'donor' phone (broken screen or whatever; search eBay), or you can pay Samsung/authorised repairer to replace it.

[Q] Sudden death!!

Something very strange, I checked the time on the phone while I was seating on my car, then I came home, and when I sat on my desk the phone was completely off. At first I though it might be an empty battery, so I plugged on the wall charger, but NOTHING happened. I tried the charger on another phone and worked, so the problem was the phone.
Took out the battery, put it back again and tried to enter recovery or download mode, none of them worked. (Even the 4 touch keys don´t light up, exactly like when you try to turn it on without a battery).
I left it charging all the night, and in the next morning, it was all the same.
About the phone
Because of the forum, its obvious that is a sgh-i777 AT&T SGSII. I changed many times of ROM, but I was running a custom one called "Alliance", wich is Touchwiz based and so stable, that I decided to keep it (flashed it maybe 3 months ago).
Regarding the installed apps, I had "RAM Manager", on the "more multitasking" preset, also had "STweaks" on the default profile, a task killer called "Speed Booster", "Next Launcher" and a bunch of games.
About the battery
I went to a store and asked to try a new one, but It didn't worked at all. The guy at the store told me that maybe it was a "Motherboard" (or something like that) issue, so I left the phone there to see if the can fix it, but they didn't have any luck. (I have to admit that it wasn't an official Samsung service center, but a friend's shop, so its probable that they dont know much about this kind of stuff). Besides, if you look closely at the phone, you cant see that the screws were untouched, so it seems that they didnt even try to repair it.
Another important thing is the battery "lifestyle" that I always used with the phone: Usage, from normal to exhaustive during the day and let it charging all night, everyday. I notice some alarming overheating when playin hard games (so hot that I quit playing and put the phone on the floor to make it cooler), this maybe has fried something inside.
I insist in the fact that I dont think that the battery is the problem because It didn't worked with a new one.
Well, the last "strage" thing that may have something to do, is that I plugged the USB cable to a "broken" car charger, causing the car fuse to burn, but I dont know if that could affect the phone somehow. (Notice that this episode ocurred 1 week earlier than the sudden death, so I dont think is a problem...)
So, this is it. Hope you can help me, because I miss my phone quite much (1 week no use...) and I would really love to have it back.
Kind regards,
Francis
P.S.: I took a lot of time writting this, try to be polite and helpful with the answers.

If your phone does not respond to battery, computer, or wall charger then it is what is known as a hard brick.
Your device may have been damaged by the car charger as well.

@FranAmestoy,
If you are getting absolutely no response from the phone, and nothing you can do has any effect, then try one last thing (if you haven't already). Pull the battery and leave it out. While holding down both volume buttons, plug in the usb cable. The computer will supply the power. This will put a phone into download mode, but if there is no response to this, then at least you know for sure it is not a battery problem.
There is a difference between "hardware failure" and "hard bricked".
Technically speaking, hard bricked means a firmware problem, usually with the primitive bootloader or the primary bootloader. Such a problem can be fixed using equipment and a technique called jtag, by which the damaged bootloaders are reinstalled. This supposes that the hardware is still functioning correctly.
On the other hand, if the phone has damage to the eMMC memory, or some other hardware failure, then the only remedy is to troubleshoot and repair the hardware. This is perhaps what the technician was suggesting when he said it could be a mother board problem.
Judging from your description of the occurence, it doesn't sound like you did anything that would result in a hard brick. But then I don't know if you actually mentioned everything relevant. In order to find out, you would need to get the phone to a competent technician. The guy who owns Mobile Tech videos is highly respected here. If you wish to pursue getting it repaired, I would suggest that you call him and go over the problem with him, find out his prices, see if he thinks it is worth it, etc.
I have used MTV before and I can say their service was wonderful.
Sent from my SGH-I777 using xda premium
Now this is what I call "help"
I have to say many thanks to creepyncrawly and Red_81 for giving me the kind of answer that I was looking for.
In a few minutes I will try that USB power method, and see what I get.
Regarding your suggestion, I do very appreciatte your kindness and recomendation of where to take the phone to, but my problem is that I bought the phone in the USA, and I live in Argentina, so its way out of my reach to get what you recommend. Anyway, a few minutes from home there is an official Samsung store, that apparently, offers technical assistance, so I will try luck by going there.
For now, I still say you many thanks and I will keep you informed about what I get.
Kind regards,
Francis

Hard brick repair with jtag would be around US$50.00 plus shipping. Hardware repair would be at least that much in the US unless you can do it yourself. It may be more economical to replace the phone.
When you go to the Samsung store, ask them if it is still under warranty. The phone can be sent to Samsung for repair if they can not do it at the store. I have no idea what that would cost if it is not under warranty. Here in the US we would ship it off to a Samsung repair shop somewhere after talking to them over the phone. But I've never had to do that so I have no idea.

Thanks for the ideas, but will be impossible, because I bought the phone through eBay and I dont have the invoice, also the phone is rooted and with a custom ROM (triangle alert appears), so the warranty is "super-voided", no chances at all to get it back to stock (remember he's dead...)
I will cross my fingers to see if the can tell me if the can fix it, and how much would it cost.
My major concern is that the failure became impossible to fix. In that case, what will I do? I just can't offer a dead phone on internet for $2... Obviously I need to make some money from him in order to get a new one... However I still have some faith in the official store
You would likely get more than a few dollars selling it on ebay for parts. The digitizer and other parts are definitely worth something. But of course it's not going to be $200.00. Anyway, good luck. I hope you find it is fixable.

Galaxy S2 I9100 Wont Turn On

Okay so I just got my new phone
And I noticed it was version 2.3.4
So I read about how to upgrade it to 2.3.6
so I did it with odin and when I started to process
it just froze and I unplugged my phone and turned it off
Then I tried to get it on again but that would not happen?
I also tried to get in download mode again that wont work either
Also when I plug my usb into the phone my computer wont regonize it
Is my phone dead now????
I just had it like for 1 day....
Please help me
remove the battery for a minute, but it back in and press vol down+home key+ power button... maybe it will work this way.
where did it freeze in odin?
did you had your drivers installed correctly?

My driver were installed correctly, before all the problems it would just show up on KIES
And im not really sure were it started to fail in Odin but it looked like odin stopped working and just froze so that's why I removed to usb and turned it off.
And I just tried to get in download mode again but no luck..
Keep trying to get into DL mode; remove battery - put it back in, hold home/vol down/power. Try a jig as well, if you can't get one easily there's a thread in General where people have offered to lend their jigs to other people, there might be someone near you with one.
If you can't get into DL mode & there's no other signs of life from the phone, it's a service centre job. If that happens, play dumb. Say as little as possible. You never know, you might blag it for warranty service/replacement (This is never guaranteed tho given you borked it & they're quite within their rights to charge you).

Its just totally dead...
but I can send it for repairs right?
its one day old
Oh yeah, of course it can be repaired In similar cases it's often a motherboard replacement. How much that costs will depend on how much labour/parts cost in your part of the world.

Just got motherboard replaced
Hi,
I just got my motherboard replaced. My phone was out of warranty though.
But your is,
My phone was rooted, but service centre wont be able or try to detect that ,new motherboard replace everything even ur IMEI. So just go to service centre and dont tell them the reason that you tried odin.
first thing, never ever try to remove usb if ODIN frozes.it will brick ur phone.wait for long like 20-30 min for expensive phone.have a coffee in between.
They took 9000 INR which is now 155 usd. Dont worry they will replace it if you dont tell the correct reason and you sud have invoice.
Try volume up_home+power button.

I was al new to odin etc
I never thought it would kill my phone
The reason I was trying to update was because my wifi signal was very weak
and with the 2.3.6 update that would have been fixed...
But ill go to the service center and tell them a other story
There are never any guarantees with this. You take the phone in, keep the story simple & you cross your fingers. There have been cases like this where people here have been told 100% guaranteed by people on here they'd get their phone repaired for nothing & they haven't.
If you expect Samsung to fix your phone/the thought of not having a warranty scares you, you don't mess with it in the first place.

Okay thanks,
When I charge me dead phone it does get really hot!
idk if that's still a sign of life...
Thankyou Captain Obvious.
I'm pretty sure I said in my first post (I did) that it would likely be a service centre job.
And what I also said was you're never 100% every single time guaranteed to get it repaired/replaced for nix if you've messed with it (as the OP has). For some reason, you failed to get that bit. Comprehension not a strong point, eh ?
OP - Phone heating up at back near the top/camera - dead. Sooner you send it in/get it fixed the sooner you'll be able to use your phone again.
