My brother has given me his old Galaxy S3 phone, which is great, but.... the mini USB port is broken! I have to recharge the battery externally (will be buying a spare battery and external charger soon!)
I've managed to unlock it OK, but I like to root and add new ROMs and generally mess with my phones. I've had a dig around and the only rooting etc instructions I've found involve connecting to your PC. The USB is completely dead, I can't use it for charging or connecting to the PC.
Is there a way round this? Presumably once I am rooted and have CWM I can flash ROMs away to my hearts content IF I can get over this hurdle.
Any pointers much appreciated
Al
(PS - anyone know how easy it is to replace the mini USB port??!)

Maybe just borrow other USB? Or why did your brother give you his S3,maybe he bought a new phone,so use his USB.
Btw,as I know USB's aren't expensive. Just buy new one yourself.

I think he means that the usb port on his device is broken, not the cable or charger, so he can't connect it to the pc to flash stuff.
I think you may be out of luck unless the rom is that old one that has the exynos exploit.

thanks guys. Will see how to move this to correct forum! (previous recent phones have been Chinese imports, I'm not used to multiple sub forums for just one phone!)
The Rom is 4.1.2 if that helps?

Try this, the app ckecks if device is exploitable and i think it can root. If you can root you can use mobile odin to flash a custom recovery then you can flash anything or keep using mobile odin to flash stuff.

Thanks for the pointer Kadopt. Sadly when i click on "Root device" it says "FAILURE: Could not root device"
Any other ideas out there?!
Just root using framarooot if u using old firmware

Tried all the Famaroots, thanks for the thought. My baseband is i9300xxella which seems to be an up to date-ish one unfortunately
You could replace the motherboard but that isn't cheap. I haven't done it myself but I believe there are ways of rooting without a PC if you have an older firmware

You don't need MTP to copy files. Use ADB.
Can you link me some info or where can I get it? Sorry if it is a typical question but I have no idea.
Thanks.

Please refer to forum rule #1.
You can easily feed the terms "adb" "file" "copy" into google if you have issues with the search function of this site.
There are also multiple guides and FAQs linked in the sticky (first post) of the I9100 general section.
Sorry.
After I posted that, I started to use "search tool" and now I have my SGS2 with CheckRom It was really easy.
So, Thank You guys for the fast help. I was thinking my SGS2 was broken or something.

This is actually a pretty tough phone to break, flashing-wise. You have to be pretty dense (or REALLY not be paying attention) and try flashing a something that is intended for a different model of phone to break it. Though, that seems to be a fairly common scenario, unfortunately.

Hey guys.
My girlfriends Galaxy S 2 won't even recognize it's plugged into my laptop, yet it will charge.
Now it's no deal at all as she never plugs it into a PC anyway, I just transfer stuff bluetooth.
But I want to put a custom ROM on it to get rid of all the carrier bull****, but being un-able to connect to a PC, how can I root it and install one using just the handset itself?
Please help me?

Not possible imho without pc, uninstall and reinstall Kies or the usb drivers for connection. Disable usb debugging.
Oh ok, bugger. And I've tried doing that, doesn't seem to work.
The phone doesn't even come up that it's plugged in. Nothing.

Is the S2 already running ICS firmware? If so you can easily root using the method here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719
Just put the two linked files on your internal sd (either transfer then via bluetooth or directly download from your phone through the browser) and follow the instructions, literally a 2 minute job.
Yeah seen that, but it's not ICS

Nope no go, just did that. KIES just says please connect a device
My galaxy Nexus connects up fine, just not her Galaxy S 2 yet it will charge fine. Dunno why.
EDIT: I take that back, left it plugged in and now it's making weird noises and sayings installing device driver software.
Sorry somebody else had posted my way of doing it
Just to eliminate another option have you tried cleaning the USB port on the phone, I have seen quite a few posts here and there saying that it has helped

If you are on a stock ICS ROM then you could always get the files for CF-Root. You pop them on your SD card and then you root your device from the phone itself. After that you could send the custom roms over to the SD card and install them that way? No PC needed
I'm sure this way works but if not hopefully somebody will correct me

Not possible, you have no cwm to flash it with, sammy`s 3rd recovery doesn`t allow flashing custom software. You need to have cwm.
---------- Post added at 09:17 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:16 AM ----------
You could try another usb port
Now WTF.
I rooted it, used Rom Manager to flash CWM and it's still the stock one.
Why isn't my phone this ***** hard.

Why are u using rom manager, it causes problems with sammy based roms. Turn off the phone, press volume up + menu +power buttom at the same time, you should get in cwm. Don`t use rom manager!
Did you try to connect on another pc? Or at least on another usb port? Windows should at least recognise that a new hardware has been plugged in
Hi.
My phone is a GT-I9100, who is stuck in 2.3.3, but the USB doesn't work : when I plug him to my computer, it's charge but the PC doesn't see him (no error message or anything like that, and invisible in device manager). The phone open MTP application, and "connected" appear, but it does nothing. If I try to use the mobile as mass storage (with USB menu or USB debugg), the mobile just charge.
When I search an Update with OTA, the mobile doesn't find any update.
So I need help, I tried change cable, PC, reboot, *#7284#, desinstall-reinstall drivers/Kies, plug in a Live-CD of Debian, clean the micro-usb port with alcohol and brush... I hope nothing of this port for now.
But I don't want to be blocked in this obsolete version and I searched for tricks to root or flash the phone without using the USB port, and I found two things :
- A file which can be flashed in stock Recovery, but ICS only
- Gingerbreak. I tried and it did no work.
Please, anyone's got an idea ? Or a nice developer can create a flashable by stock recovery to unlock this situation ?
Thank you ! (Forgive me if I made some mistakes, it's not my mother tongue)
Please :/
Need some help, Please !

If it were that simple, the problem would have been solved: I tried three different pc, with 3 different cables, the problem is well at the USB connector of the mobile phone to be damaged. I have root and flashed my Galaxy Spica, Teos, Nexus, and an Xperia Arc and Ray owned by friends, so I have some basics and I already know how to flash with Odin, but thank you for help that you propose.

Well, I ordered and replaced the port, it has not changed anything, I've been seeing a repairman, he again changed the port, and still nothing. Now I'm going to buy a rope and a stool.

hello friends. I have a Note i717 At & t. with a problem that does not recognize the USB cable. mini port only works for me to change the battery. (nobody could sorting that problem) -
is there any way to access root without usb cable?
PS: I have the Stock 2.3.6

Not sure exactly what your asking.........3 possible questions out of this.
Computer does not recognize when phone is plugged in?.....need to re install drivers.
Trying to access root????? On phone? Is Superuser installed?
Remember also, when going into phone on computer, you need to right click to browse files.
Not sure if what your asking. Was my best guess from your english.

Before despairing, check:
* USB cable works for data (there exist "charging cables" - these will ONLY charge)
* Drivers installed on the computer being used and are known working.
I think the USB port on the note is kinda failure prone. My friend's note stopped charging after about 15 months (due to bad connector).
Worst case, you may have to replace the microusb port and associated board (It was a pretty easy replacement). Make sure you get the right one for your version of phone (i717 vs international/etc).

So if it charges it must detect a S3 in download mode? or is possible that it does not detect download mode even if it charges?

I had the same thing with my i9300 i.e. charging is fine however no sync and I detected it just 1 day after my warranty had expired. Anyway what I did was to clean the USB port to get it working back. Here's what I did, First remove the battery from the phone. Now put a fine awl pin in the USB port to remove all the lint from it. While putting it there make sure there is no/minimal contact of pin with the circuit (which act as USB jack) in the port.
Next i put some acetone on cotton and forced it inside usb port with the pin and make sort of wiping motion of cotton with pin to clean the circuit board. After that I take another piece of cotton and put WD40 on it and do the same thing as above. The Next thing, put the battery back and the USB port is working like a charm
Needless to say, if you do decide to follow my method for cleaning the port do it at your own risk. There is always the risk of damaging the phone further when you do such kind of things.
Thanks to all, the issue was: loosen port, port replaced now I got it rooted using the same PC with same USB cables I used for my S2.
Who invented this weak usb port???
