This is an unmodified AT&T Atrix4G, which is supposed to be unlocked, but it was a warranty replacement and I believe it was carrier locked by the first owner, before ATR&T gave it to me. Last year, AT&T's unlock code didn't unlock it, and they and Moto both claimed to be stumped when we found this out last year. The phone did recognize AT&T NVMO SIMs, but would only say "network error" when I tried a T-Mob SIM.
So this week I went back to T-Mob, thinking maybe the phone IS unlocked but needs a T-Mob APN entered to work with a T-Mob SIM. Phone was working fine, and the T-Mob guy tried to boot the phone with a T-Mob SIM card in it. The phone asked for an unlock code, we put in the one AT&T had previously generated (and confirmed, no error there) and instead the phone rejected the SIM and said "emergency mode only".
Now, it won't recognize any SIM card, not the original AT&T card (AT&T also supplied a new card in case the old one was the problem) nor the T-Mobile. All it wants to do is boot to emergency mode, or ask for an unlock code again.
I've tried the factory reset cold-boot, that didn't help either.
The phone has just gone psychotic and doesn't like ANY SIM card. Is that nuts or what?
Does anyone have any idea what I can do to get the phone working again? With AT&T or T-Mob, I don't care, I'd just like it to work as a phone again, even if that wipes all the data from it.
AT&T's store, and their local "tech center", were both dumbfounded. They claim they've never seen a phone that just won't work, won't unlock, won't take any SIM card before.

I am urgently in need of someone who can solve this network problem I have been having. Right now I can not access any mobile network with this phone.
I am using an Atrix 4g unlocked and rooted.
Basically, my problem is that my phone has been asking me for a "SIM network unlock PIN" every since my time in Italy.
I recently went to Italy 2 weeks ago, and came back yesterday. On my first day in Italy I bought an Italian SIM card from the Mobile Network company Tre, a company similar to AT&T. When I replaced my AT&T network card with the Tre one, it asked for the SIM network unlock pin. Seeing that I did not have a code on me at the time, and after trying several numbers given to my by Tre, I replaced the tre card with my original AT&T SIM card. I later learned that my phone was not international and I unfortunately did not call AT&T ahead to unlock it, causing the phone to lock network access. I learned that this is a security feature in case your phone is stolen.
I'm asking for your help because I spent literally over an hour with tier one and tier two support of both AT&T and Motorola technical support all telling me the same BS.
Before calling any support numbers, I went to an AT&T branch, and I told them the situation. They replaced my AT&T SIM card with a new one, yet the phone still asked for the SIM network unlock PIN. They then told me to call support and ask them about a subsidy unlock code. AT&T phone support gave me multiple codes to unlock the phone, but none of them worked. All of the SIM and IMEP numbers on the phone were correct in their systems too. After telling me exactly the same thing as tier 1 support, AT&T tier 2 then transferred me to common Motorola support tier 1 support. Motorola only told me to hard reset the phone, which I do multiple times every time I update your firmware anyway. The last hard reset I did to my device was literally 30 minutes before I called technical support. They then told me that the only thing I could do is to replace the phone under warranty with either motorola or AT&T.
However, I am in a pickel becuase my phone is completly unlocked, rooted, has CFW/kernel, etc...and I think that wards the warranty.
I have been using this same firmware ever since I got this phone during the last summer, and it has been working perfectly. After I put in the Italian SIM card, the network locks. I have no where else to turn but to an expert here on xda.
Is there anything I can do? The only thing I can think of is to tell my story to a nonobservant AT&T guy over at a store and ask him to replace it. However, I don't know what would happen if they found out my phone is unlocked and they gave me a new phone under warranty before realizing this...
Thanks
To unlock an atrix 4g, you must have the unlock code: I have it from att,
Second you must have a non att simcard or sim card from a different carrier, I borrowed one, from some weird pre pay off brand phone,
I inserted the sim card, booted the phone, but it goes to the att drops logo animation, then reboots, and never gets farther than that,
It supposed to come to a screen that gives ya the option to enter an unlock code...
Its never been rooted or anything completely stock from att. anyone know why it keeps rebooting? Is there any other way to enter the unlock code?
att had me dial a number then enter the code after that, but it never worked and att said to just find a non carrier sim card..
I received my new-to-me used T-Mobile SpringBoard on Saturday. I inserted an AT&T SIM card and it asked for the unlock code. I foollishly told it to ignore this problem (I meant just for now) because I wanted to bring up the tablet fully and try it out.
I now have an alleged unlock code, but I see no way to enter it. Rebooting the SpringBoard no longer asks for the unlock code at all. How do I get the SpringBoard to ask for the unlock code again? Or how else can I enter the unlock code?
I am running the stock Android 4.0.3, which I installed via microSD card (because the OTA kept saying "update failed").
EDIT: I am now wondering whether the tablet unlocked itself when I updated to 4.0.3. If so, the question is how to persuade the tablet to start using my AT&T SIM card. When I check "Available Networks", it lists T-Mobile 3G as an unknown network, but then it lists
AT&T 3G
AT&T 2G
T-Mobile 2G
But when I try to register on AT&T 3G, I get the message "Selected network (AT&T 3G) unavailable".
Is there something else I need to do to get the tablet to use my AT&T SIM card (which has tablet service, ordinarily on a Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9)?
EDIT2: Here is another, much more frightening possibility. When I received the Springboard on Saturday, it was on Android 3.2 and actually connecting to the Internet via T-Mobile. That is, it included a T-Mobile SIM card, and that T-Mobile was still accepting that SIM for 3G and even "4G" service. However, when I inserted an AT&T SIM, I got the expected request for an unlock code. Later that day, I upgraded the tablet to Android 4.0.3. I think that I again successfully connected to the Internet via T-Mobile, although I am not certain of that.
The next morning, the tablet was no longer connecting via T-Mobile. I presumed that T-Mobile had now officially closed the previous owner's account. I used the tablet on WiFi, patiently waiting for my unlock code to arrive. This morning (Monday), I get the unlock code, but the tablet no longer asks for it. The tablet recognizes three networks (AT&T 3G, AT&T 2G, T-Mobile 2G), but is unable to actually connect to any of them. Again, my AT&T SIM has valid service, ordinarily on a Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9.
The frightening possibility is that the previous owner did not pay his bill, and that T-Mobile has blacklisted the tablet--not only within its own company, but even with AT&T. (T-Mobile could simply pretend that the tablet is "stolen.") Is this a real possibility?
EDIT3: Here's yet another possibility. Could the Springboard's software be out of sync with the firmware SIM lock? Perhaps the SIM is still locked, but the Springboard's software imagines that the SIM is unlocked? So the Springboard software calmly tries to connect to AT&T, but the firmware refuses?
I finally figured out some of my problem. The SIM card was inserted incorrectly! As you know, different devices accept the SIM card in different directions (notch-in-first or notch-in-last); the official T-Mobile SpringBoard User Guide does not mention or illustrate how the card is supposed to go. (The notch should go in first.) Nor does Android give any indication that the SIM card is essentially absent, except once after clearing all data.
With the AT&T SIM card properly inserted, I was still not getting a connection. I diddled with APN Names, etc.; and at one point I got a 2G connection. But when I tried to switch to 3G, I lost both 3G and 2G, and have not been able to recover either.
I got an HTC One from AT&T back in June and immediately unlocked it. It worked fine with T-Mobile prepaid for a month, but the coverage sucked. I went back to AT&T prepaid.
I got a new Nexus 5 and am selling the One.
When the guy came to buy it, he popped in his T-Mobile SIM and the phone asked for a PIN on boot. What gives? Did the phone re-lock itself? AT&T customer service seemed pretty clueless on this...

It appears that his T-Mobile SIM card has the pin lock enabled, has nothing to do with your phone. It requires the SIM pin code to be enabled any time it's inserted into a phone.
Once your phone is carrier unlocked it will never re-lock itself.

I don't think that's true. I had a SGS2 i777 (AT&T) that I got AT&T to give me the unlock code. My son was using it on T-Mo prepaid. Once he put the sim in an old phone and try to set a passwd, but ended up locking the sim card. Put the sim back in the SGS2 and had the same problem. Called T-Mobile to get the PUC code. Typed the PUC code in, and the SGS2 gave a message about sim locked. Called AT&T again, and had to get the sim unlock code again.
My wife's iphone 4 had been unlocked previously, and a few month later had to call at&t again to unlock it. Don't know what caused the re-lock (she never used non-AT&T sim after the 1st unlock), but it can happen.
in a first moment, the carrier signal was ok, but data wasn't working. so i called the carrier, get the correct APN, and the everything was fine for 5 minutes, for phone calls, data network. But suddenly signal was lost, and never got back. Factory reset, the signal bars still off, with an X. Tried to locate the carrier manually, but it doenst work. What can I do now? I will try another sim card to check if it works. How do i know the phone is carrier locked?
If its the AT&T version (presumably, since this is the AT&T variant section) it should carrier locked, unless you obtained the unlock code; or otherwise purchased it SIM unlocked from a 3rd party vendor.
On the other hand, if you were able to connect to the network at all, it is probably not carrier locked. Likewise, if it was locked, it would ask for the code when you inserted the SIM.
I think something else is going on. Even if it as SIM locked or bad SIM, I believe it should still read the network as being present. It would just not let you connect to the network.
Although, replacing the SIM is an easy and cheap thing to try. At least to eliminate it as the issue.
